This is a long review but please take the time to read it, as stated in a few Yelp reviews the store's excellent reviews on Google don't seem to match up with people's personal experience. Maybe not many have the desire to say anything negative about a quaint little bookshop, I don't know but it has major issues. The shop itself is small but cozy, they have a limited selection but I often order books and they have them in in a week or two. I have enjoyed shopping there for quite a while but I can no longer tolerate how rude the staff can be. I will provide two examples and you can make up your own minds. Last month I received a phone call to tell me that the books I have had arrived, this is how the phone call transpired. H: "Hello this is Hager's" KC: "Hi, how are you doing?" H:*loud sigh* "fine, your books are in" KC: "Great Tha-" H:"Goodbye" Today, My partner and I were waiting in line to enter the store as there were already 4 people in the store and there is a sign that says the maximum number of customers allowed at one time is 4, one person left and my partner asked if it would be alright if we went in together to which the clerk responded, curtly " there is almost nobody in here" but why should she be annoyed we were only trying to respect their sign. While we were inside another couple was waved inside bringing the total customers to 7 but we had to wait in line at least until one person left. I want to say that this horrible customer service would be an issue at any point and I didn't want to make it a covid issue but I do want to bring up how much I hate their safety protocol. The clerk does not wear a mask, I am aware that you do not have to wear a mask if you are separated by a divider but their divider covers only part of the counter and in our very short time being there the clerk leaned around the barrier to speak to customers repeatedly. The woman was smiling and welcoming to the people before and after us, I don't really understand. We are unobtrusive and spend a lot of money.

Hager Books is one of the best independent bookstores left standing! All staff are so helpful, offering wonderful suggestions to find a great read for anyone. They will order a book if they don’t stock it & it’s only ever taken less than a week to receive. Pricing is in line with suggested retail pricing posted by a publisher. I prefer to support a local business, get great service & trust the staff’s recommendations for a delightful reading experience.

I like this bookstore. it is cosy and the staff is not intrusive. Also if you return a book when you realize you have already read it you get credit which is recorded in a book. ( You do not have to carry around a credit slip--I always lose them) If you need help the person at the desk has been helpful to me.

This is a small neighbourhood bookstore with a wide range of fiction, non fiction and kids books. Prices are spot on and it’s much faster for me to go here than to shop on Amazon. If they don’t have the book you’re looking for they will order it for you. They’re always ready with book recommendations too.

Selected a couple books through their website for in-store pickup. They had them ready within an hour of opening and behind the counter when I arrived. Prices we in line with expected and the service was friendly. Glad to support an independent bookshop instead of you-know-who...

One of the best service-oriented bookstores I have encountered. Changing up to date inventory, always fresh. With a really good section on WW2, espionage, general history. Great fiction section. Remarkably, they offer really good coffee table books.

Hager Books Ltd can find what you are looking for: if not in the surprisingly extensive stock, they can order your request. Also, browsing among the shelves is a treat in itself, suggesting titles and authors that you may not have thought of.

Cozy, cute small bookshop. Nice place to stop into. Lovely collection of offerings. Staff gave space to wander, but also was helpful when needed. Really enjoyed the 20 ish minutes I stopped in here.

This is a great book store with outstanding staff. They always get what you need. And I never had any issues with my young child who has now grown up and is always keen to stop at Hager's.

New favourite bookstore in Vancouver. The store is quiet and very well organized! The staff were phenomenal and incredibly welcoming, I felt safe in this store. Thank you Hager books!

Friendly staff, solid selection. Glad to see this place is doing well! Had exactly what I was looking for, and earlier had some neat history books I picked up on a lark and enjoyed.

One of my favourite bookstores. A very nice neighborhood independent bookstore with a great experienced staff. Unfortunately, shops like this are getting to be very rare gems.

  • Sheila Peacock

Lovely long standing neighbourhoid bookstore with a wide selection - the latest releases in fiction, cookbooks, biographies, kids, teen, art and more, something for everyone!

We love this bookstore. My baby and I always visit this bookstore and always have something to buy in their kids books selection. The kids books selection was great.

  • Jenn S

Decent selection, friendly and knowledgeable staff. They used to order in books for you, but I haven't done that in a while so don't know if they still do.

  • Jan Manson

So nice to have a neighborhood bookstore that sells just books and not sleepwear, purses, dishes, etc. (You know who you are). And so helpful.

Friendly and knowledgeable, they have been great at bringing in books not currently in stock. Recommended.
