Dargah of Hazrat Shahjalal(Rh): A Realm of Religious Past in Shaping the City of Sylhet, Bangladesh Religion as a belief has always played significant role in influencing peoples metaphysical ideologies. And its allegorical representation through various types of religious structures is even more powerful in shaping the built environment. Sylhet, the significant divisional city of Bangladesh has a strong historic past of religious commencement in this region. The mausoleum of Hazrat Shahjalal (Rh) mostly known as Dargah or Mazar, in the heart of the city is such an empowering structure which has immense dominance over the spatial growth of the city. The history of the place and its spiritual influence on people has made it the prime attraction; both for the local and the outsider of the city. This place from time immemorial has prolonged the development of the region in a diversified way mostly flavouring it as a sacred pilgrimage destination and till date beholding the spatial significance of remaining near the core of the city. The phenomena of continuous pilgrimage tradition have become one of quintessential basis for conceptualizing the development of the city. Through an in depth observation and field survey of the study area along with syntactic analysis of the whole city, this paper intends to find out how the spiritual structure of Dargah and its premise is influencing in shaping the city and allowing it to grow with its own spatial order emphasizing the intense religious attributes of the place.a This is one of the holy place for the muslims people. Many travellers visit this place everyday from different part of the world. One of the greatest person (saint) Hazrat Shahjalal R. Who camed in this city with his 360 partners. One of the holiest places in Sylhet. People travel from all over the country to Shahjalal and Shahporan Mazar. I personally do not support a Mazar culture. However, Shahjalal Mosque offers the biggest prayer gathering in Sylhet. Still worth a visit. Please be aware as there are pickpocketers about. And DO NOT buy any candles or 'Agar Batti' as they are resold over and over again. Only certain individuals benefit.
The Shah Jalal Dargah is the shrine and burial place of the 14th century Muslim saint Shah Jalal, located in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The site, known as a dargah, was originally constructed c. 1500, though many additions and alterations were made to its structures over the following centuries. It became a religious centre in the region, respected across multiple ruling administrations and greatly venerated among Bengalis, with local folklore and legends developing around it. The extensive surrounding compound serves several functions and includes four mosques, a religious school and a public cemetery among others. The Dargah is presently the largest and most visited religious site in Bangladesh
A blessed mosque inside and next to the Hazrat Shahjalal (R) Mazar. It’s a multi-storied building mosque! It gets full on the weekends, espeically on Friday. Thousands of people come here to pray & roam around the holy place in Sylhet. One of the most important tourist attractions here in Sylhet.
I like this place. The design of that mosque is good. Friday, at the time of Jummah there is a huge crowd. But Government should take some more steps to keep this place clean and safe from thief's. The main problem that I faced that is there are too many beggars and many of them are illiterate..

Most respect Hazrat Shahjala Rh.
