I had a particularly urgent need to change my Medicare coverage by the next month; it was a confusing situation for the litany of typical reasons, but also for some that are more obscure. The previous month, I had been ghosted by the principal of another agency (HE Cross). He had spent almost an hour with me on the phone, but wasn't familiar with the particulars of the statute at issue, and I suspect the financial benefit to him was negligible given the time it would take him to research it, so he chose not to call me the next day, and, to ignore my voicemail. In any event, the following month, I knew that I did not want to deal with someone who was unprofessional and apparently uninformed; I needed someone who was both knowledgeable and dependable. I came upon Health Plans in Oregon after talking with a representative at the Oregon Dept. of Financial Regulation; I mentioned the poor treatment I had received from the previous agent. She told me that her friend, who had previously worked for a non-profit that helps in untangling Medicare snares, had told her that Diane Faligowski and her associates had a reputation for being competent, professional, and exceptionally diligent, and were basically the go-to agents in Multnomah County for this sort of thing. With that in mind, I called the agency. I was thrilled to get a call back in under an hour from an agent named Adam Reid, who was polite, no nonsense, and had a "let's dive in and get it done" mentality. I liked him from the start. Where the other agent failed, Adam exceled. He was already familiar with the statutory issue specific to Oregon. He also had no qualms about assuming the surprisingly complex task of researching whether I would have to pay the premium of a smoker or a nonsmoker (I quit smoking years ago, but by taking up vaping). And he was willing to work in whatever way was best for me, whether that meant coming to my home or conducting business over phone/by email. Further, he ended up saving me over $800 this year in premiums. I had already done my research and was set on one type of plan, but Adam persuaded me to look at a different type, saying that the cost savings over a year could easily be a thousand dollars. And I did my own Excel number crunching, and he was entirely correct. But the one hitch, solely of my own making: I hadn’t contacted him until around the middle of the third week of the month; further, I didn't stress the need to change plans by the first of the following month until only about five business days before that date; I naively thought this would be enough time. I could tell that Adam was a little stressed—I later realized then that the end of the month is the busiest time for any agent--but he was masterful in keeping his cool and pushing through, despite the short notice! We had a little non sequitur pushback from the insurance company, but everything got done, correctly, with a minimum of fuss, and on time. Credit to Adam: he had listened to my rant about my current coverage, so he understood the true importance of getting this done promptly given the situation I described. And that he spent far more time on my transaction than was, zero sum, of probable net profit to himself--at a time when he surely had a lot of other, likely more remunerative, plates he was obliged to spin. It’s clear that Adam actually cares about his clients. He's possibly got THE perfect personality for his job: he's sincere, friendly, and humorous when the situation merits it, but he's also efficient and businesslike. I will be referring everyone to Adam Reid and going back to him if the need arises in the future. Great to this superlative level of professionalism and competence in this kind of business. HPIO helped my wife and I transition from COBRA to private health insurance and did a competent job. Dianne and her team know their stuff and were responsive, monitoring the transition carefully. My only suggestion is that they warn clientele in advance how confusing and frustrating the actual enrollment process will be, with the avalanche of contradictory emails from the federal government and undue delay.
