There are a bunch of things I find fascinating, but seeing as I live so close to Los Angeles and I live in the heart of Southern California, architecture is a huge thing to me! And I just happen to stumble across Hennessy + Ingalls when I got lost on my way to a metro station. Best mistake I could have made. The bookstore itself seems to be devoted almost entirely to art and architecture. The job in at the front desk was kind enough to show me where the tattoo section is. It's small, but it's substantial and has quality books that are a little bit more difficult to find. My absolute favorite section was devoted to architecture and the environment, or architecture and environmental sustainability. Their prices are pretty damn good too! You have your fair share of books that are easily $70, $50, but most of The ones I was interested in seem to be in the $20 to $25 range. And for those of us who are suckers for deals, such as myself because I am cheap and poor, they have a $2 section. Initially I was going to ask the gentleman if it was a typo, and then I made the effort to actually look at the sign in front of me which said "$2 books." I wish I was a little bit more observant. Ended up picking up five books for less than $10. If I had bigger paychecks, this place would be getting a massive chunk of it. If you're a sucker for architecture, history, art, coffee table books, book stores, that sort of thing, this is the place for you. For those of you interested in a super nerdy date, I highly encourage you to start at " The last bookstore" off 5th and Broadway, and then drive or meander over to Hennessy + Ingalls.

This is NOT a Barnes and Noble, instead a creative little book shop nestled in a breezy corner of the Arts District We only stopped in Hennessey + Ingalls for short period of time because it wasn’t until we got there that we realized it was a shop dedicated only to books about architecture, arts, photography, magazines, fashion and more, a lot more. While we didn’t find the book we were looking for, discovering this shop was an even better find. Hennessey + Ingalls is a GEM in the Arts District. They have a beautiful and modern location with easy parking on most days. They categorize everything very well and have wide selections to choose from. I was very happy to see that there were a lot of well-known books and also a lot that were more niche and unheard of for the most part. While wandering around the store, I also saw some selections of cards, notebooks, tote bags and other stationary items for sale. My favorite part was actually the small children’s section. The books there feel handpicked and filled with books about history, niche topics and just some general feel-good books. I think that there’s something for everyone here and well-worth visiting time and time again! Notes - Street Parking - Affordable prices - Easy to find - Niche selections of books

What a great place to browse and find some amazing books. It has one of the most comprehensive collections of books on art, design, photography, architecture and the like I have ever seen. It's a huge place and you could spend hours looking through all the different collections. If you have an art lover within your friends and family this is the place to buy them a beautiful one-of-a-kind book but they will truly cherish. Always support independent bookstores.

Beautiful bookstore lined with colorful tomes of varying sizes. This is an iconic landmark, and was celebrated as such. I thick that selling used/rare books might add some character to the place, but I understand their need to make an honest living and keep it running. I bought three books and the proprietor was very friendly and we had a good chat about Richard Brautigan's "Trout Fishing in America" (sorry, no underline).

I have always loved this bookstore, in each of its locations over the past 30+ years since a friend first introduced me in college. H+I has SO many one-off out-of-print treasures on SO many arcane topics, plus numerous rare and wonderful monographs. It is easy to spend and hour or two in this store and forget about the world. Truly one of LA’s best and underrated spaces.

Best art/design book store. I bought from their online store for the first time and it was a great experience. The way the books arrived packaged so safely and carefully was amazing. I have never received books packaged so well. I hope they improve the website to be more mobile friendly, and better search/display options. Actual photos of the used books would good too.

Great stop for random book exploration or for finding something specific. Books lean on the creative side so don't come in expecting a Barnes and Noble. In a really nice hip part of the arts district of LA. Often find myself gazing at big blue skies and feeling a breeze gust in ricocheting off both long buildings this store is in between.

It's a really cool bookstore if you are into art & architecture. They have books on other topics but the options are limited. Definitely recommend if that's your interest, however, I wholeheartedly disagree with the woman who said to visit this place to get "a feel for the city." If you're a tourist, spend your time elsewhere!

This bookstore is filled with beautifully bound books on architecture, art, design and history. They even have a great collection of greeting cards and a wonderfully insightful book on ghosts!! The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. If you love books this is definitely a place to check out.

  • Kristine Oakhurst

Highly recommend this book store if you're a creative type. While there is a GREAT selection of art related books (how-to, critique, theory, etc.) there are some books more on the fringes of art like gardening, flowers, random quirky and interesting books. Go get a book and stop Facebooking!!!!

Been going here since The Sixties and it still has a bit of the feel ... It has a SUPERB used book section and it usually has an excellent selection of radical reading and Chomsky's Galore...after all it is his home ground. One of the best searching experiences that you can get...YIPPIE!

What the world needs is more bookstores, especially aisles filled with heavy volumes of design and architecture. This is an excellent place and essential when trying to locate older titles. Helpful staff. Sensibly organization. Wide selection. Just what you need.

An entire bookstore devoted strictly to architecture, design, art, and fashion, amazing architecture selection, good design selection, wide range of older books in those categories not found elsewhere. One of my favorite bookstores, great find!

One of my favorite places to go in Santa Monica and one of the few vibrant architectural bookstores. It is easy to get lost in the various design sections, including regional speciality areas like California Architecture. The store is in a

Minblowing selection with really helpful staff. I wish I weren't traveling and having to carry everything in my backpack otherwise I would've purchased more! I did my best to make more shelf space in their Japanese graphics design section.

The best bookstore in LA (maybe the universe...)! Such a gem to find the coolest books on design and architecture. I always leave with something inspiring... The staff rocks too! Chat them up and ask for recommendations!

Great selection of design, art and architecture books including an out of print room. Smaller space than the previous Santa Monica location, but it's in a much better retail complex and it's no longer in Santa Monica.

The person working at the register was incredibly caring and helpful. They didn’t have the book I wanted in stock and so he called multiple local bookstores to try to find me a copy. Very kind.
