UPDATED BELOW: ORIGINAL REVIEW: Make a different choice. No, really, unless you want to wait for hours, despite having a reservation for over a month, choose a different option. We arrived just before this location opened. Our reservation was for 9AM, an hour later. They did not have a car for us at 8AM. No worries, waiting an hour was not a big deal. We accepted that the first hour was our responsibility. Except, it was not an hour. 2 1/2 hours after our reservation time, they finally found us an SUV to drive. We did not reserve an SUV. We wanted smaller, fuel efficient car, with a trunk, which is what we reserved. The overworked employee manning the desk was less than helpful, but since the location was underprepared, she said there were no cars available. I might have written this off as a one time mistake by Hertz. Except that it happens often. We wasted 3 hours (plus) of our 48 hours we had to explore the area, waiting, with our luggage, in a line of people. The first few appointments of the day did have cars, but only the first 5. This is absolutely a horrible way to treat customers. And no one cared. UPDATE: What a quick and wonderful response from Hertz. It seems 100% designed to make sure someone disregards my review and mistakenly thinks that Hertz actually cares that this happened. They do not. How do I know, you might ask? As this situation was happening, during the hours of wait time, I called them. More than once. No one cared that I had no car, no one alerted the management to get me a car, and no one at the location did anything to solve this problem. At best, I imagine that they will replace the desk staff, which does not actually solve the problem, the problem is most likely with the management that they are forwarding this review to. Obviously, as described in the ratings, not just by me, this is how the location is run. Choose something different.

Avoid the San Pedro office!!! My wife and I had a reservation for a car the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We made the reservation thru the Hertz website. The office was supposed to open at 9 am (as advertised on the website as well as their door). We arrived at 9 am and we waited for nearly an hour until we found out the office was not going to open that day. There were about 30 other people who just disembarked off of a cruise ship from the Los Angeles Port who were stranded without cars for which they also had reservations. My wife and I eventually took a Lyft to LAX so we could rent a car from there. I emailed customer service politely asking how they can make this situation right and detailed my added expenses coupled with the fact that this ruined our plans for the day. I received an email from Hertz stating the following: "The information you have provided is very important to us since it tells us how our various locations are doing and where improvements are needed. Please be assured that your comments will be shared with the appropriate Hertz management." but Hertz did NOTHING for me at all including reimbursing me for my added expenses. They couldn't even give me a complimentary day for my next rental or possibly a discount on my next rental; they just did nothing. I don't know how Hertz can treat their customers like this! They could have at least tried to make this right but did nothing. I believe Dollar Rent A Car, Firefly Car Rental and Thrifty are also part of Hertz. I will never rent another car from any of these companies again.

If you rent from this Hertz location in San Pedro, be prepared for some serious incompetence. I tried to get Southwest Airlines Frequent Flier credit here (like I do at any other Hertz rental location) and the agent didn't know what that was! He argued with me 3 times saying the Hertz Southwest discount code is the frequent flier number. When I explained to him the Southwest number is unique to me and the Hertz discount belongs to Hertz and whoever uses it, he didn't have a response that made sense. On top of that after confirming I could use cash at the rental return, I returned only to find I couldn't and the rental agent didn't know. I called Hertz customer service and waited on hold 14 minutes to speak with an agent. She listened to me, offered to email their managers and did nothing to get me the points credit from Southwest. From now on I'm using Hotwire or Priceline. There is no customer support there, but it is half the price. Dealing with Hertz directly is not worth the "1 star" service.

Dropped car off Sat 14th 09:00 hours as agreed when the car was collected from Vegas Airport (where we had to wait an hour due to a fault with the car) At drop off the Car was full of fuel and I told the staff member where it was parked when handing the keys over. Said no problem and he would close the account. Very busy so he then started talking to someone else and said I could go. I then left and boarded a cruise ship for a week. Got an invoice saying we had the car until Monday 16th and over $500 extra fees charged. Numerous emails later, proof of me being on a cruise ship with itinerary and photographs and not driving the car around LA, asked them to check their cameras in store. Hertz are refusing to accept their mistake and will not refund us the money. A month later and I haven't even heard back after 12 days to my latest email. Disgraceful and I would urge everyone to avoid using them.

DROP OFF INSTRUCTIONS: Report first to the office with keys. The office entrance is off 6th street, next to a coffee shop. The employee will take the car into the garage. You cannot take the car into the garage yourself because you need a FOB to be buzzed in. The gate does not open on its own. Possibly can use passenger drop off area to park the car and drop off the keys? Not sure. Forgot to confirm that point with the attendant, but I did confirm the keys/ garage process for future reference. Attendant was kind but also serving 2 people by himself when I dropped in. Giving 3 starts due to lack of process/ information in the company website. Website provides no instructions on drop off and due to a single person working I was unable to reach anyone via phone on several attempts, so I had to follow a previous review.

Tried calling this place at least 10 times to get an earlier pickup. Calls went to a cellphone that went to a vm ‘not yet set up’. Showed up an hour early. Doors locked. Nobody inside. Store opens at 8am. This was at 9am. Note on the door says they ‘stepped away’ and had a cellphone number to call. Called it several times. It went to voice mail. Guy finally shows up at 845am. Doesn’t say a word to me other than asking for a drivers license and credit card. Throws me the keys. Says take elevator to 6th floor. Gas is on full, make sure you return it on full. Return the car an hour early. Get there. Doors locked. Tried calling. Got the voice mail. Waited until he finally showed up. I would never rent from here again and don’t recommend anyone else does either.

I usually try to stay positive with my reviews, but in all conscience, I simply cannot recommend this branch nor Hertz as a company overall. I am a President's Circle Gold member and I have not had one good, hassle-free experience renting from this location (I've mistakenly done so at least half a dozen times). I've had issues with everything from credit card error to long wait times, but the straw that broke the camel's back for me was the over 1.5 hour long false promise of pick-up from my house which cause me to be late for my meeting. I called several people, including corporate office, but no one claimed responsibility. I've since switched to Enterprise across the street and am much happier. Again, run, do not walk, to another car rental company.

Unreliable. For my 0800 reservation, I finally received a car at 1045. The car was a five year old Corolla with 95,000 miles, no floor mats, and a non-working lighter plug. The other five families with reservations were still waiting when I left. I think Hertz has both lost their ability to manage the logistics of the rental car business and has given up the quality standard of the old #1 Hertz in favor of cheaper, high volume business. Reliability has suffered, among other things. On the plus side, the attendant at this location did his very best within the Hertz system to get cars for the people waiting. He got no support from his management or from Hertz itself.

They do not maintain the vehicles. Rented a toyota sienna to drive home from a cruise. Had to hold the sterring wheel 2" counter clockwise to hold the car straight. The vehicle was hydroplaning all the way home from I5 north. We had to drive 40mph. Even then, the thing would hydroplane. It felt like a death trap. Pulled to the side to see if we had a flat or something obvious but couldnt see anything, so we thought it was the wet roads that was the problem. Upon closer inspection when we got home, turns out the front passenger wheel was completly bald. Never had a problem with hertz or thier vehicles until now. Very hesitant to be a returning customer.

Reserved a car weeks in advance. Arrived to find 20 people waiting in line before me. After an hour had gone by and only two people had been helped, they announced that there were NO cars available for anyone. They said they would drive cars out from LAX one at a time. No need to wait in line, just write your name and number down, and they would call when your car was ready. After a couple of hours I started really wondering and tried calling but they wouldn't answer the phone. After FOUR HOURS of waiting for my reserved car, I took an Uber to another rental place in another city, and got a car right away for half the price.

It's a shame I have to give even one star since there's no other lower rating I can give them. For our vacation we booked two vans two months in advance. We were told to pickup any time after 9:00am for our vehicles. After arriving shortly after 9, we were informed that both of our vehicles were given away. Not only did they leave us stranded for the day, the employees were incredibly rude to my group and the other customers in similar situations. If you're looking to book a vehicle for your trip, keep searching as there are plenty of better options for you.

Staff was nice and courteous, although a bit late in opening. They couldn't really give an explanation as to why their invoice was $5 higher than my reservation. Anyways, I was charged the correct amount in the end. The bad thing about this rental, I was about 1/2 mile away and noticed the fuel was not full, clearly below the F line. I was able to get picture with fuel level with the mileage. I was going to fill it back to the same level, but decided to do the right thing. Oh well, my fault for forgetting to check before leaving.

Came off our cruise with a reservation to rent a car. Waited in line with so many people for over an hour or so. Hertz just never opened. Left us with no car and no guidance as to what to do next. Not sure if we should go somewhere else or if we would be charged to do that and no one was answering the phones when calling other Hertz car rentals. $120 in Uber fees and headed to lax 2 hours after the time we were supposed to get our rental. Poorly run office for sure. Save yourself the trouble and rent from another company!!

I will never try using this location again. I set up a reservation recently and had an entire vacation planned out. I first went through Expedia and I even received a confirmation directly from Hertz afterward. The afternoon prior to the start of my trip they called and said they ran out of cars and could not fulfill my rental. I was forced to go to another company and because it was last minute I had to spend almost $150 extra and drive an extra 1 hour just to pick up a vehicle and make sure I didn't cancel my trip.

I had a reservation and they told me no cars were available. Employee didn’t care about my president circle status. I asked why your location’s reservation system is open if no car were available. He couldn’t answer it. I ask if I can cancel my prepaid reservation, he said to call the 800 number. What’s the point of having an in person branch and an online reservation system if none of the processes work properly. I walked across the street to Enterprise who had tons of cars available.

On our visit, on a Saturday morning just after a cruise ship arrived a few blocks away, the location only had one person working. It took a long time for the individual to tend to customers in front of us and when we did finally get a vehicle we couldn't get out of the parking garage because we were not given an access code or anything to scan. Not the end of the world but it felt like 45 minutes more time was spent than necessary for the transaction to take place.

It's a shame because I have rented from Hertz for a long time, but this location really sours the name. I reserved my car at 8am right when they open. The employees didn't show up until 8:30am, no apology, or anything. I was late for my meeting because of this. It's not worth the couple of extra dollars you might save even with AAA. There are different car rental places right next door. I didn't know such a global brand could have a location this awful.

AVOID BOOKING HERE AT ALL COSTS! We showed up with a 9 AM reservation that has been booked for MONTHS only for no one to show up. With 50+ people waiting in line for their rental, we called the next closest Hertz only to be told that no one would be opening the store that day. They were extremely unprofessional with absolutely no notice, leaving everyone panicking and stranded. HORRIBLE SERVICE, HORRIBLE STORE. We will NEVER book with Hertz ever again.

The car was rented a month in advance. When we arrived at the location to pick up the rental, we were told they didn’t have any cars available as they were waiting for cars to be returned to LAX and then delivered to the San Pedro location. We rented an suv and were told we may be getting a van. It has been an hour and a half and we are still waiting.

This location is very easy to miss due to its location. While on the ground floor of the building and direct access to the outside; the location is inset compared to other storefronts. Also due to the placement of support pillars, the signage is almost impossible to see from the street. Even with maps help I missed it the first time

Small office with 1-2 workers. To return vehicle, drive past the office, turn right and enter parkade, drive to 6th floor. Park in a stall, take pic of fuel level and odometer. Take elevator down to main floor to office to return vehicle. No shuttle, but easy walk back to cruise port. Make sure drop off passengers and luggage first.

Ridiculous... Someone drank too much and forgot to come to work. As said below, hundred people stuck with returning the car, not able to getting a new rental because the guy didn't show up for work. People panicing before they have to get onto cruise. Will never use this Hertz again and sue them.

I was charged for an extra day despite returning the car on time before 5pm with no extra days directly to the Hertz representative who claimed he would take care of it. Also I waited 2 hours to pick up my second rental despite having reserved it months ago, terribly under staffed location.

Nothing wrong with the facility itself. However there was only one person working there, so he could not offer the pickup service that HLE advertised. When I was there dropping off the car, the staff was also away with door locked so I had to wait for him to return. Under staffed.

The only good thing about this Hertz is that it is right across the street from an Enterprise. Didn’t know a rental car agency could run out of cars either. Happy to support the local business at the coffee shop next door while we wait two hours for our car to arrive.

DO NOT BOOK HERE, I had a 9 AM reservation and showed up and the doors were still closed. Had to call a different store to find out this store wouldn’t be opening today and left over 50 people with no car. Had no notice that it wouldn’t be opening today. It was a joke

It’s was a 20 mins walk from the cruise pier. The check in was very slow. Also the reservation prince was lower than they were trying to charge us. They fixed the problem after I pointed it out. I even did the pre check in before we get there on line

We had a reservation for 9 am. after a cruise. They didn't open, so we called a different Hertz store, and they informed us that the store wasn't opening that Saturday, leaving dozens of people stranded. DO NOT USE THIS HERTZ!
