Upon arrival, the sullen person behind the counter informed us without eye contact that they were only doing carry-out, since they closed in 45 minutes. All the chairs were on top of the tables already making it even less welcoming than the service there. I’ve visited Philadelphia several times, and that tasted nothing like a Philly cheesesteak, more like a glorified Steak N Shake burger on Subway bread. I was expecting the same explosion of flavor and melt-in-your-mouth goodness as I had in Philly based on all the reviews and hype. I’m a true Philly cheesesteak connoisseur, since it’s my favorite sandwich in the world- hands down. And I know what they taste like; this Subway sandwich isn’t it. The beer was good. No soap in one of the two bathrooms, which (of course) made me feel great about the sandwich being prepared by potentially unwashed employee hands. I can’t get over the service; I’ve literally never had such horrible service in Indiana. No eye contact, no pleasantries, no basic politeness. I’ll give any local restaurant three tries before giving up, but wow…I wish I had my $32 back for the sandwiches and basket of onion rings (bought my beer separately). Not worth it.

As a homesick Philadelphian, I couldn't be more excited than when I found out about this jawn last night, and had to make an excuse to come out here this afternoon. I was immediately transported back home walking in (these guys sell Herrs!) and the kid behind the counter understood what a Wiz Wit was. The wife and I both got steaks and shared a basket of fries, everything was terrific. My only hangup was the wait time. I don't know if the kitchen was understaffed or undertrained, but the service time would not be tolerated in Center City. That said, this is a great slice of home, and being attached to a pretty decent brewery helps immensely. 100% chance I visit again. Go Birds!!!

2 stars because of the rolls they serve it on only. The prices are way high for the amount they put on your sandwich. The Philly roll is good and that’s good because they hardly put anything else in unless you pay for extra meat it seems. I’ve heard others say otherwise but I can only speak from my experience here. I might go back to just buy the bread and make mine at home, but this place was such a disappointment. They up charge for every tiny thing, they take way too long to get food out. Staff were not friendly or helpful. Would probably be better if they locally sourced everything but the bread and brought their prices down and portions reasonable. It’s enough to remind you of Philly, but just be disappointed you aren’t there. Edit: owner is nice and I think my service and quality would have been better had they been there possibly. I got their rolls and made my own at home and it was a lot better.

I like it and would recommend it to a local, for sure. Good place to grab a solid lunch or dinner (sandwiches and salads of various sizes, sides, beverages, + in house desserts and their microbrew beer). I'll be back to try the Philly cheese steak sandwich. This, being my first time, I split a medium size tuna salad sandwich and fries with my spouse. They have Coke-a-Cola products. Service was from one of the owners and it was friendly, supportive (I asked a lot of questions) and fast. They also support local initiatives: when I was there they were advertising a hoagie eating contest to benefit a local veterans chapter. They are just south of the Butler campus, so stop in before or after a game or show for a good meal.

We timed it perfectly to go there during Butler's spring break so there were not a whole lot of people there. The food was excellent and they executed wonderfully when I told them about my food allergy. All the workers were very friendly. And it wasn't far from the children's museum. My only caution is that the building kind of blends in with it's surroundings. It is on a corner and does have a sign, but you have to be looking for it to find it.

Most of their offerings do not have pork. Their hot dogs are all beef.
Kid-friendliness
There were some toys for kids to play with and it was very open to move around or have strollers in there....but there were some steps to go up to get to the door.

I’ve been wanting to try H&H for awhile. I gathered the troops mid weekday and went to see first hand the hype. The staff wasn’t very pleasant as I stepped up to the counter. As a first timer, the boy at the register had no personality and wasn’t very friendly. We had to find someone to pour some hops for us after finding a seat. Seasoning was lacking on my original Philly with onions and provolone. The roll was the best part of the sandwich as it lacked ingredients. One of the boys went big with double steak, onions and whiz. Three sandwiches and a basket of fries for $60 is steep. This was not including the hops which was over $30 for four beers. These prices do not include tips for counter boy with the pony tail or computer guy bartender. I would suggest after the cook makes your sandwich, have him hit it with S&P before wrapping it up. I might return someday but not real soon.

My husband and I both got Philly’s my husbands was the chicken Philly, it was juicy the cheese could have had more cheese to chicken ratio. I got the regular Philly and was also a little displeased with the cheese to steak ratio for a Philly. Subpar for the regular Philly. My daughter got a kids meal, and for $6 (hotdog, fries, tiny drink) you would assume you would get a WHOLE HOTDOG but no only half, and that completely felt like a rip off considering my child who is 5 can eat a whole hotdog Another side note: I watched an employee come out the restroom, not wash his hands. And all 3 hand sanitizer dispensers were all out, along with the paper towels also empty in the restroom.

I have never once made the effort to come and make a google review on a place, but H&H is the exception. I cannot emphasize enough how outstanding the cheesesteaks are (best I’ve had EVER) and the customer service and atmosphere is unmatched. Regular cheesesteak wit onions and wiz is my last meal for sure. The chili cheese fries are also stellar. You can chill in the bar attached to the place and feel like a regular even if it’s your first time. For sure my favorite place in Indy. My only complaint is that my stomach is too small to consume more food.

Took my mom out for a quick dinner after work and we both got steak sandwiches. They lacked seasoning so nothing to really say about them. I could barely taste the onions on mine but the banana peppers added a decent touch. I had cheez whiz and American on mine and she had American and Provolone. Onion rings came out luke warm but tasted okay. The bacon and cheese fries were flavorless and needed seasoning as well. This is my second time coming and I’m left unimpressed again. Workers were really nice. Decent atmosphere. If you so happen to be around here it might be worth it but definitely don’t go out the way for it.

We are in town for a soccer tournament this weekend and found this absolute gem in our Google search results. Honestly the first good cheesesteak I've had since moving from the eastern PA area into the cheesesteak desert known as Louisville. This was a true oasis after so many failed attempts to find authentic cheesesteak within driving distance. We'll be back for sure, especially for the ones with their house made spicy red sauce! The atmosphere was great and we especially liked the PA touch to all the decor. The only thing that could've really taken this over the top is if they also offered pierogies as a side and a Kutztown soda. Thanks for bringing us back home, Hoagies and Hops.

Service was great, the guys were super helpful. Had this place twice and now can confidently say I can understand why I didn't remember the first time. We got the Philly Special and a classic, on both sandwiches the meat wasn't the most flavorful and dry. The chili cheese fries were just ok..the worst of all was the recommended pepper shooters. The way they described it made it seem like it'll be the bacon wrapped jalapeños, it wasn't. Not sure how well sales are on those, but I can't imagine them being too popular. It was swimming in some kind of worcestershire/balsamic juice and was just very confusing to the palate.

As a Philadelphia-area transplant in the late-'90s, it's been wonderful to have Hoagies & Hops in the Indy area. I have eaten there on a couple of occasions. The food is fantastic and every bit "Philly" as it should be. I have had both a regular cheesesteak and a chicken cheesesteak and I, definitely, recommend either. The restaurant is decked out in Philadelphia sports decor and it's fun to see somewhere local with my team's logos on the wall. The staff is friendly and the customer service is wonderful (maybe, the only thing not Philly-like!). Check this place out for the ambiance and good food.

This place is a joke. Philly cheese steaks had no seasoning,or onion as requested. Chicken cheese steak was 2 pieces of grilled breast thrown on a bun with verry little cheese again no flavor. We paid $15.00 a 9 inch sandwich and they could have come from a griddle on a sidewalk. My husband said this place had rave reviews but the people who eat there must have no tastebuds. This has been one of the most disappointing place we have gotten food from in years. Please people think about this post I am not a novice at posting or tastings this is not where you want to eat. Go to Get and go deli and you will get a better meal. We will never go back there!!!!!!

Ended up coming in with a pregnant friend and she asked since she had previously been told when NOT pregnant the only time they heated meats for sandwiches was for pregnancy situations. Now that she's expecting she was craving a good sandwich and hoped to get a warmed ham sandwich. Instead, the gentleman at the cash register on 5/16 told her she couldn't get any of the sandwiches warmed up. When explaining the necessity a sneer on his face told us he wasn't going to ask someone that was working in the kitchen about a potential way to ensure the ham was cooked. Shame. We won't be back.

This place !!!! We enjoyed this location even more than Virginia Ave. The owner was there working and instantly acknowledged us as we talked w her at the other location (which is now permanently closed due to staffing and just general area issues.) This location has alot more options as far as the food and extras. The owner is as much a reason to go as the great sandwiches she serves up!! I got the original cheesesteak with white American and extra provolone. I got the small and could only finish half. My boyfriend got the cold cut and says it's the best in the city. He got the large and it was huge ! This ia a place we continue to frequent!

Customer service was great. If you know east coast style of food. This is definitely it. And if you dont then you are missing the best tasting food. My friend had the ultimate Philly steak it was made to perfection. I had the veggie sub ( build your own way) it was so fresh and seasoned to perfection. There onion rings are fresh hot and tasty. My veggies was sauteed just the way I like. It definitely gives you that east coast vibe. Highly recommend. And will definitely return. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!. And thank you for bringing a little piece of " home" to INDIANA.

I’m a Redskins fan who has lived in Philly and I love coming to this bar!! It feels like I jumped right back into Philly with the delicious hoagies/steaks, Philly vibes, and sports comradery! The Eagles’ fans delivered an appropriate dose of loving hatred toward me. I love this restaurant and the owners’ dedication to their home city. They raffle off Tastee-Kakes, Philly sports memorabilia, as well as give away free Philly cupcakes to each customer after every game! They are next level hosts! Thank you for not kicking a skins fan out and for all of the laughs!

I feel like I deserve a refund. After 30 minutes of waiting I went up to the counter and saw my sandwhich sitting there in the back. Its cold and has hardly any meat on it. When I ask for the sandwhich the guy in the back started whipping up some fries. The beer cheese fries arent good either. The cheese is dark orange and tastes burnt. I used to love this place now I'm not sure I want to come back. When my food was done they should have come and found me when I didnt come up there. I ate it anyway cause I was starving.

I can see where they wanna go with it. But, that's what can happen when you're trying to repeat something that's an original in one place. The sandwiches are a welcome alternative to Subway or other sandwich shops, but you don't get the big flavor for your buck. A mediocre sandwich for a price that doesn't match the quality. BUT, for a college campus nearby, I think those customers might appreciate it better. If you can, just go to Philly and get the real deal.

I was fortunate enough to stop in here on a recent road trip. Being from the Philly area and having consumed a lot of sandwiches in my life, I would put these up with the best of them. Cheesesteak and Italian hoagie were both excellent. They source the ingredients (especially the rolls) from the same place a lot of the Philly places do and it makes the difference! Definitely make a point to check this place out whether you're local and unfamiliar or a transplant who needs a taste of home. You won't be disappointed!

  • Just Rita-B (Rita)

I really wanted to like this place and had been waiting to try it because the pics online look great. I was able to try the traditional cheesesteak. It seemed to be missing the extra cheese I requested and also was missing the onions. The sandwich had way more bread then meat and seemed to have little to no seasoning, so was very bland. Maybe the hoagies are better. On the good side, there was little to no wait in line and the sandwich was ready in a short amount of time. Great location as well.

  • Shea Bennett

The Cheesesteak was very good. They bring the bread from Philadelphia. They know the bread from Philly can hold the delicious grease! I'm from Philly. The place is genuine. Great job transplanting the tastes from Philly to Indy. The owner is also extremely friendly. Their customer service is excellent! Great find. They were super accommodating to my 3 girls. Whenever I'm in town visiting Mom, were running over and getting a taste of back home. Food was great.

The meat on the philly cheesesteak tasted like it was spoiled so we returned it for a ham and cheese. The hoagie bun was so hard you could barely chew it. It was a hot day and it didn't feel like the air conditioning was working. We sat there sweating. The best part about the whole experience was the beer. They had a great selection and let you sample as many as you like. We won't be returning and wouldn't recommend this establishment for the food.

I want to give a big up to Hoagies and Hops! I have been looking for years for great South Philly Cheese in Indy. This is the place, my wife is very hard to please, but when she had her first bite! She said that this is awesome bread... and that this will not be a our last visit. They truly care about quality and friendliness. Trust an me if my wife loves it you need to try them. Forgot to also say they have great beers too. Amazing.

  • Devi

Ordered a regular cheesesteak - ribeye, grilled onion and provolone (didn’t want cheese wiz today). The atmosphere is relaxed, but the actual cheesesteak had no flavor. The steak didn’t taste like anything, quite unseasoned. The grilled onions were muted in terms of flavor, and in general my sub was dry.

First trip to Hoagies and Hops and it is very good. They are walking distance for us. Still quaint on inside but twice as big as it looks from driving by. I was wanting to order one of their salads but figured I should get a dog of some sort being my first visit. I had chili dog and it was very good. Fries are excellent. They have a separate section on the menu for vegan and vegetarian so they do a great job of having nice variety.

Love this place - its right next to a tap room. I would consider it "fast casual" since you order and pay at the counter and they give you a buzzer to indicate when your order is ready. I have had their special - which was wings. The sauce was killer. I also had their hummus wrap - it was good but a little salty for my taste. The service at the counter was really great too.

Fantastic experience at Hoagies & Hops. Kristina the owner recommended a couple of menu items, and if she says it's good...IT IS GOOD! Everything about this Philly screams east coast. Delicious, perfectly cooked and tender meat, on an authentic hoagie roll. Not just the Philly, everything was fresh and phenomenal. 11/10 would definitely recommend.

Love this place. As a Pennsylvania native, this is our go-to place for comfort food. They have a lot of the signature flavors of Philly and PA Dutch country that are hard to find in Indiana, *those* Tastykakes, and a first class cheese steak. Even the occasional shoo fly pie!

Fun neighborhood spot & you couldn't ask for nicer service! Everything is top notch. There's so much room to spread out that we often bring our bag of board and card games to play. Combined with the great food, drinks, and atmosphere, it makes for a great date night or evening with friends. Stop in - you won't be disappointed!

ordered large classic phillysteak aged American cheese and long hot peppers. food tasted fine , meat was a tad dry . was mildly disappointed in serving size. 15 bucks and I'm still hungry.

Paid $7.49 for these pathetic ball park chilli cheese fries. Got a cheesesteak and didn’t even bother eating it nor taking a picture. It was dry, unseasoned, the meat was fatty and overall gross! There’s no way you’ve had REAL cheesesteaks and enjoy this place. Over priced and just not worth it. We will not be back

Best place I've found in Indy for authentic Philly steaks. Be prepared to wait a few minutes for your food, but it's absolutely worth it. A lot less time and a lot cheaper than a plane flight back east!

The Philly was made "all the way," which basically meant it was meat on bread with a little cheese and a few onions. It wasn't my favorite. However, it was better than subway.

We were working up the street at Butler University. Decided to try it out. Wow it definitely exceeded my expectations. Ordered a Cheese steak with peppers . It was delicious..... the fresh hoagie bread was like none other. Would highly recommend driving out of your to enjoy what this place has to offer !!!

  • Ryan Wilhite

Good hoagies and a great menu. Nice to have the bar next door. It's a small indoor dining room, soif you're here for a Butler game, try to get there early. Quick service and reasonable prices. No problem finding street parking.

I wouldn't get into the cheese steak wars bc I grew up in IN not Philly. What I will say is this is some of the best, quality, quantity and tasteful food on the Northside! There is something on the menu for you no matter where you're from! Just go!!!

Best Philly cheesesteaks in the Indianapolis area! Wish they would open another restaurant in Fishers. Hoping their (promised) food truck visits Fishers soon and often.

I've read so much online about this place and was so hopeful for a delicious cheesesteak sandwich. My husband and I both ordered the chicken cheesesteak and the sandwich was dry and had zero flavor. The best part about the food was the bread.

Food has gone down in quality and up in price over the years. Philly cheesesteak was dry and had little flavor. Only flavor came from the bread. Was very disappointed. Staff was friendly thought and the place was nice. Just miss the old food.

Very good sandwich. They serve grinders and submarines, not true HOT baked Hoagies as you get in western Pennsylvania. Excellent meat and bread. A hot pizza oven baked sandwich would be a good addition in the new location at 4155 Boulevard Place near Butler University coming spring 2019.

This place is okay. It's not as authentic as they make it seem. I would probably give it four stars of it were a bit cheaper. You definitely aren't getting your money's worth. If you want a better tasting, although admittedly still not

Boy did the Internet do a good job of tricking me. Photos all look amazing, I mean absolutely delicious. I made up my mind, we're going to try Hoagies and Hops TODAY! Made the 40 drive, with my family, plenty of people sitting outside

Maybe I set my expectations too high because it's "authentic" but the Cheesesteak was just OK. The Chili Cheese Dawg on the other hand was lights out! Would go back for that in a heartbeat! The fries were pretty good as well! More
