Indian Alley comprises a block of Werdin Place, running south from Winston Street to East 5th Street. Referred to as “one of the most famous public spaces in the country” among Native Americans, the tiny street lay adjacent to United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII), an outreach center for American Indians that became an important focus for social, spiritual, political and rehabilitative activities for the community. Established in 1974, at 118 Winston Street, UAII provided health and support services to Los Angeles’ Native American population. Los Angeles is estimated to have the largest Native American population—anywhere from 40,000 to 100,000—of any city in the United States, with over 100 federally recognized tribes represented within LA county. *(Click on Street View and double click on the Indian Alley gate, to the left, and you can stroll down the alley and see all the great original art murals done by Native American artists)
Way back in the day and way before the street address 118 Winston Street became the art gallery and a yoga studio it’s known for today, it was the meeting place of the secret society known as Catholic Knights of America (St. Joseph Branch # 397) according to Newmans’s Directory and Guide of Los Angeles and Vicinity: A Handbook for Strangers and Residents published in 1903. The guide indicates that meetings were held on the first Sunday of the month but alas, the guide does not reveal the secret password to get in! Today the alley way at Winston and Werdin Place has become a street-art gallery featuring an amazing constellation of artists. Who's work can you identify?
The Winston St. entrance into the alley is often open. If locked, go ask Sean, the owner of InnerSpace Gallery at the corner of Winston and Werdin Pl. (entrance to alley) to let you in. Sean is so cool and kind. Great contemporary art works too. These days (01/14/2020) there has been a decline in the public wall (murals) art's overall condition. Deteriorating images due to time, weather and vandalism. I was sorry to see this, but glad to have visited the alleyway. Inspiring and contemplative images and texts.
We expressly went to Indian Alley to see it and take it all in. Both of us being Natives vacationing out of Montana. There was a parking lot nearby so we had all afternoon parking. We found a large gate completely blocking the entrance to Indian Alley so we just went on our way. Indian Alley was a bum trip for us.

Amazing art work! Visited with some friends only to find out this little hidden patch of rich history sitting right around the corner!
The gate on Winston is closed and the alley is tight. Better to park and walk over. Luckily my friend had a small car.
It was cool. I really liked it. My girlfriend ask me when we are going back over there.I tell her soon
Enter ok the south side it's gates are usually locked on north side
Lugar con mucho para ver, arte comida etc. Me resultó interesante.
Just Thought I'd check out the old Stomping Ground, Tober.
For all native/indigenous people to call home in the city.
gate is locked. Epic waste of time.
Always best quality in the town!
