Founded in 1972, the Ian Potter Museum of Art is the University of Melbourne’s art museum. Housed in an award-winning building opened in 1998, the Potter is the largest university-based art museum in Australia and a national leader in the field. The Potter manages the University Art Collection, a rich resource of art and artifacts spanning neolithic to contemporary. We are a cultural and educational facility, serving both the campus community and the general public.Embracing research, discovery and debate, the Potter exhibits art from antiquity to the present. We display art from the University Art Collection, as well as from public and private collections from around Australia and the world. Working with living artists, we participate directly in the development of contemporary art. Public programs, publications, and social media encourage engagement, learning and the exchange of ideas. The Potter is committed to extensive participation in the University’s interdisciplinary degree structure. Our goal is to make art central to teaching and learning, by enhancing art collection access and contributing to curriculum development across all faculties. The Potter unites art with the activities and environment of the University of Melbourne campus. We display the University Art Collection around the campus and form academic partnerships linking art with the curriculum. Through our engagement with the arts community we contribute directly to the cultural life of Victoria.
The museum appears to be closed for renovations for the next few months. Their website doesn't come out and say this but shows closed every day. There is a poster in the window with some specious bafflegab about not being closed except in terms of exhibitions. If an art museum has the doors locked and the lights off and no opening hours, it is closed. Even at a university. I walked a mile out of my way to see it. Ouch.
An amazing few hours at the gallery sharing Australian Art, from Indigenous to impressionists, wonderful experience. Our tour guide Flora, who has been a volunteer for 20 years was a real hoot, and shared her vast knowledge with us mere mortals. Loved it and learned a lot. 5/5

Very diverse collection full of interesting things to explore. Usually quiet and peaceful, entry is free so great place to wander even just for an hour. Egyptian collection is excellent; not particularly big but very well researched and labelled. A good gallery overall and an interesting insight it to the history of Melbourne University.
Went here to check out the Eavesdropping exhibition the other day. The space was amazing, as was the art. It's a free museum, but the quality is definitely not lacking. Absolutely would recommend seeing Eavesdropping while it's still being showed there. Will definitely come back to look at other exhibitions here.
The receptionists were are so welcoming! Now.. i found the building very ugly. It has this massive waste of space in the middle, so the rooms for exposition are tiny, and the beautiful feature wall was covered by a concrete wall. Nah.. zero points to the architect.
Probably my favourite gallery in Australia. I love the selections of Colonial through to modern Australian art..... although I sit in front of THE McCubbin and get lost in the sentiment and allegory as well as the sheer skill of the artist.
Attended special event on Saturday 17 November for a viewing of the spectacular Leckie Window (pictured below) at the Ian Potter Museum of Art at Melbourne University Parkville with commentary by Geoffrey Wallace and Bronwyn Hughes.
Current exhibition focuses on furniture design - not my taste, but the museum is well-laid out with lots of explanatory material provided. Entry is free (awesome), located very close to a tram stop and staff are lovely to deal with.
Lovely small, free gallery with an interesting permanent collection as well as changing special exhibits. On the Melbourne University campus opposite the main University tram stop and two blocks from Lygon Street
An interesting place, was a little underwhelmed with one of the exhibitions when I attended but that's the way things are with galleries. If recommend this as a worthwhile visit for an art fix if in the area.
free enter, the works express social problems, I like exterior, this locates in Melbourne University, 3 floors, if you have bags, please pass them on the reception on Ground floor
Small, free museum and gallery space. If you are visiting the University of Melbourne then it makes for a relaxing stop. Good place to escape the summer heat or winter rain.
The site at Melbourne university is currently closed for renovations, i wish they’d update their google listing. The Ian Potter centre at Federation Sq is awesome
Nice spot to spend a chilled rainy afternoon in Melbourne :)

Modern and ancient art museum. Special exhibition of innovative video works (not always my favourite format, but intersting to see). Australian paintings.
Free and very fascinating. Very easy to get lost here. It's a bit of a maze. Plenty of different art exhibits. Just behind Federation square.
Nice place to gather information about what's artistically happening in Melbourne. Nicely curated and perfect place on The Federation Square
Brilliant exhibition on Australian impressionist. Highly recommend. 200+ great works on display and due to covid restrictions not crowded.
Great little gallery on Swanston Street, Carlton at Melbourne University, very accessible usually showcasing interesting exhibitions.
A good little pop-in museum/gallery/exhibition space. It's not going to blow you away, but worth a look. Free admission.
If it’s closed until 2021 you could at least put it on google!!!! We just waste $30 of taxi to come here!! Thank you!!!
Went and saw the Clement Meadmore exhibition here at it was fabulous. Great setting with a good little cafe nearby.
Free art show at Ian porter is amazing. Loved what they did to the space on level G,2 & 3

Olive Cotton and Max Dupain exhibition was a fabulous review of Australian identity inthe 30's and 40's
I loved the current exhibit (Clement Meadmore furniture). Worth the trip to visit, and free admission.
Expectes much better things, especially in the Syrian part of the museum. Very cozy and neat though.
The museum is small. They are going expand and renovate soon and going to reopen in April 2020
A small but excellent little museum of modern art. Often has very interesting exhibitions
The Potter is currently closed for renovations and will be re-opening October 2020.
I love this building, exhibitions and openness to new art and exhibitions.
