Kumasi Walking Day Tours - Ghana I DO NOT RECOMMEND! My experience was HORRIBLE!!! 1) For the duration of the tour, the guide Ben Kwesi Annan was aloof and not at all engaging. At the start of the tour, the guide requested a photo prior to departure from my hotel - this was very unsettling as there was no information shared about the purpose for the photo and no information given as to how the picture could/would be used/marketed. It was later discovered that the tour guide took several photographs of me throughout the tour. This was done without my knowledge or consent. The guide posted my images on various social media platforms and included my full name and country of origin. This is creepy, unprofessional, and a gross violation of privacy. 2) Apparently, there was some mix-up regarding the private transport vehicle and the travel experience from Accra to Kumasi was very uncomfortable. This was NOT a private tour as there was a public 5+ hour bus ride from Accra to Kumasi in uncomfortable seats with a man shouting on the television the entire time. There was no English speaking throughout the bus ride despite English being the country's official language. There were often moments of confusion as I was unable to understand the instructions being given by the bus operators and the tour tour guide provided no translation. This would have proven to be a very dangerous situation if an actual emergency happened during the bus ride. 3) Upon arrival into Kumasi, there were no opportunities for toilet break for more than 2 hours. (This is after having to endure an excruciatingly uncomfortable 5+ hour bus ride.) Once in Kumasi, the guide and I were connected with a local driver. However, the transportation experience in Kumasi was also very sour as the local driver was very reluctant to utilize air conditioning despite high humidity and temperatures in excess of 30°C (85 °F). The driver repeatedly opted to drive with the windows down despite multiple requests for air conditioning. As a result, there was significant exposure to dust, diesel exhaust fumes, pollutants, etc. due to the lowered windows. 4) The Kente weaving workshop was disappointing as there was minimal explanation of Kente history. There was more emphasis on peddling wares than providing actual cultural teaching/insight. I was made to feel like a "target". The visit experience was more like a tourist trap than an opportunity for cultural enlightenment. The Kente stamping visit was another tourist trap. 5) It was extremely difficult to understand the guide and staff at the shops. 6) The tour started at 6AM, but lunch did not occur until after 2PM. Not a well-planned itinerary. 7) The tour advertised a visit to Kejetia Market, but the market tour was not provided. This was a very disappointing, frustrating, and uncomfortable experience. ☹️☹️
This May I experienced my second tour with Ben Kwesi Annan, and of course I really enjoyed it! It was fun! But this time I was travelling alone and booked his tour guide Service for a roundtrip for several Days. The stops were Accra, Kumasi, Obo (for the zip line) Accra and the waterfall around Mt. Gemi. As I Visited the main attractions of Kumasi already in 2017 I just relaxed There and enjoyed the contact with locals. Ben showed me Dakojom, his Place, and I was chatting with his People there. They welcomed me very friendly and I felt very Good and Safe There. Next Stop was the Zip line which is run by Jay's Lodge in Obo Kwahu. The Hotel was really nice: A quiet Place and very Good accomodation. Experiencing the Zip line was pure Adventure! I needed to overcome my fear factor, but it was really Funny! From Jay's Lodge we travelled to Accra where we stayed at the beach house in Teshie Town, 10 km from the City Center. The Hostel was almost directly at the beach and offers a Good value: Andrew was very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed a delicious Breakfast. I highly recommend Kumasi Walking Day Tours to everybody who wants to visit Kumasi, Accra, Cape Coast or other sites in Ghana. Ben Kwesi Annan is an excellent tour guide and an amazing person with a good sense of humour. With him you will have fun, experience a great tour and make unforgettable memories in Ghana. He's absolutely trustworthy, can even Help to Plan the tour and offers his great service for almost every Spot in Kumasi.
