***Update*** Shortly after I posted this review, I received a call from Karu's manager apologizing for my experience at the salon. She seemed genuine and offered me a complimentary service. Again I became excited and after discussing what I was initially looking to do, she told me she would call me back after she reviewed the schedule to see when I could come in.That call was on Oct 30th and to date, I have not received a call back. I'm really surprised that even management in this facility can't keep their word. What a waste. I was planning on updating this after my new service but that's obviously not going to happen. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. Beyond disappointing!!! I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! ***** Prior to coming to Karu I did some research to make sure l was going to a good establishment. I was genuinely excited to find this salon since they had recieved outstanding reviews by different magazines so, I figured I would be in good hands. I immediately called in and requested a consultation with someone experienced with balayage. -Background info: i have naturally dark hair and hadn’t colored it in almost a year due to my pregnancy so I was REALLY excited to get back in the salon. Also, I recently moved away from my hometown so i had no other option but to find a new place to get my hair done. - On the day of my consultation I was surprised to find out I had been booked with someone the salon recently added to their staff. How did I find out? They have a sign inside welcoming their new additions. At first i was upset because I wasnt informed I was meeting with a new-hire but I figured that since the salon is so well sought after, they would only hire the best. Truth is, my stylist was very kind. She listened to me (or so i thought) and assured me she could achieve the look I desired via highlights and what they call a “smudge”. I was unsure but decided to trust the process. I had also showed her a picture of the look I was hoping to achieve. Ultimately i asked to break up my natural dark haircolor with different tones to add texture for a natural look +the fade since I‘m not about high maintenance. Everything was fine until the day of my appointment- i was disappointed and upset. The results were nothing like the photo i brought in or what we discussed. I have one-tone highlights from root to end-which i havent had since highschool! When i mentioned the fade we had discussed during our consultation, my stylist apologized she had forgotten and proceeded to complete the “smudge” since we both had time to spare. I had hoped this would fix things but it didnt. I can still see the highlights up to my roots. Do I look bad? No-but its not what I asked for. I did what I was supposed to do- i made a consultation, expressed my desires, and was assured we could achieve those expectations. Im not an unreasonable person- if something cant be done i understand but to waste someones time and money with false expectations is so wrong. I wasnt happy but I tried to look at the bright side and kept telling myself it isn’t so bad but honestly i cant stand the way I look. I hate that in a few weeks my roots will be obvious and what I hate most is the fact that I have to find someone to fix this and spend more time and money I dont have. Karu salon- your employees are nice and the place is beautiful (two stars) but your service leaves much to be desired.

Worst salon ever. I scheduled an appointment for a balayage. First time I’ve gotten my hair done in 2 years. When I left and got hole I noticed the less than perfect results I thought I received. The girl gave me a really bad highlight, completely missing a while 1.5 inch section of hair in the back and gave me a VERY choppy haircut. I will attach pictures. I contacted to fix it the following day because it was so horrible. I contacted the manager, Stephanie, who was less than pleasant to talk to. She informed me that I “have no availability and what to expect if I can’t come in before 5:30” that I’m “not working with her”..... I work a 9-5:30 job. I can’t call off work.. I’m a manager. I was scheduled to come in the following day to fix it. Shout out to the sweet girl who attempted to fix the first girls mess! But again still not what I wanted.. the hair turned out yellow which was not noticeable at 9:30 at night in the salon lighting. The color was supposed to be ash. Not only that but I used the shampoo that I purchased from the salon and the auburn completely washed out!! The manager was not willing to refund for the services that were not performed at the 2nd services so I’m out of $605. On top of it, she told me that if I had to come in a 3rd time to fix it that I would be charged for another full service!! So now I’m out the $605 but I also have to go to ANOTHER SALON and pay $900 for a color correction. According to them it’s the worst salon job they’ve seen in a long time. If you want good hair do NOT come here.

Aili is great! I went in to get some rose gold streaks in my hair, and she was very helpful and willing to get a good understanding of what I wanted. She made sure we were on the same page many times, and was also very honest with me about what might be realistic with the color I had chosen. I love the way it turned out! She's a real professional, and everyone else at KaRu was friendly and helpful. The only reason I'm not giving a five-star review is because the price was absolutely horrendous. I have very short hair, and got a very small number of pink streaks in my hair, yet the whole thing cost me around $175...which as much as I love the color, I don't think was totally worth it for what I got. I understand that they deserve to charge more because they're such professionals, so I don't begrudge them a higher price than I would pay at a lower-grade salon, but for my particular experience it just seemed way out of the ballpark. However, if you want a really great color and an awesome experience, this is the place to go! Just make sure you are clear in asking about what you can expect to pay, and be willing to shell out a lot of extra $$ for the services. Despite that criticism, I have nothing but gratitude to Aili for the work she did on my hair, I love it!

Kari is such a gift. She so easily connects with you, and understands exactly what is going to make you look, but even more so, feel beautiful. Her ability to do anything with hair is truly beyond words, and even more so, her natural gift with color, and how it can shape your day to day life, is truly just incredible. She isn't someone who needs to be explained what your looking for, she is someone who has this natural ability to be able to connect with who you are, and give you the most beautiful essence, inside and out. The reason I love her so much, is because of her energy. She has this way about her, of filling you inside with everything you need, and that reflects in your hair, when you walk away. Getting my hair done by her, always feels like such a gift, because I walk away each time with amazing hair, but it's the feeling she leaves you with. She was born with the ability to turn anything inside you that believes you aren't enough, all the way around, and transform the way you feel inside. The beautifulness of the hair she will leave you with, is just a reflection of that. She's a one in a million kind of person, and the energy she adds to your life is truly irreplaceable.

As someone with curly hair I have had many a terrible trip to the salon that ended with tears, but not with Kari! I spent years going to curly hair specialists who did a decent haircut but I often ended up with streaky, overbleached highlights. I finally decided to seek out a color specialist and am so glad I did! Kari gave me one of the best haircuts I’ve had in a while (and for the curly girls out there I used to go to the Devacurl flagship salon in NYC!), kept my length which is always scary with curls (!) but gave me some nice layers. I had a couple of previous highlight “situations” that I was asking Kari to help remedy. She did an in person consultation prior to my appointment, and then was so gracious with me to talk it through again before starting on my color as I was super nervous!! She did a treatment that brought back the health and softness to my hair as it was dry and brittle from being over processed. The highlight placement is just what I wanted! I’m excited to keep going to Kari to see where we get as we continue to un-do the damage done before. She’s an artist!! Thank you, Kari! ☀️

As an underground beauty nerd, I am obsessed with this salon! I'm typically low maintenance when it comes to my look so I have joined the ombre bandwagon over the past few months. I had an appointment right before my birthday and brought in a picture I found on pinterest to show my stylist, Aili. She understood what look I was going for and gave me exactly what I wanted. I didn't want her to mess around with my roots since I do admire my natural hair color, I just wanted the ends to fade to a light blonde. She suggested the olaplex treatment and I went with it since my hair is naturally fine and susceptible to breakage... I think the treatment does help. In addition, I also had my hair trimmed by her so the ends would look "fresh" after my appointment. The haircut price is kinda steep, but I only go about twice a year(bad, I Know!) so I guess it's worth it. Overall I am extremely happy with their salon and practices and will be back for another appointment :)

Angela is an absolute dream for anyone who wants to go blonde!! KaRu set me up with her when I let them know I wanted to change my hair from dark brown/black to golden blonde. I did a consultation with Angela and she broke it down for me in basic terms, letting me know I will go through an orange phase and such a drastic process will cause me to lose some inches from my hair. I took her advice and purchased Olaplex shampoo/conditioner to strengthen my hair. The process took about a month, and each time I went back she stripped more color out. Meanwhile, I was already getting compliments on my hair! In the last session, she nailed it with an absolutely beautiful golden honey color. Even my mom likes it. I'm incredibly grateful for KaRu for having a stylist like Angela. She's not just amazing at what she does, she's also HILARIOUS and loves a challenge. I'm hooked!

KaRu is by far the best hair salon in Austin and all of the credit is due to the incredibly talented and gifted owner, Kari Leon-Guerrero. To call Kari just a colorist would be doing her an injustice. She is an artist. But even if you don't go to Kari, any stylist at KaRu is going to be top notch. She believes in hiring stylists with experience, a willingness to grow and a incredible portfolio of work. They understand that every head of hair that walks out their door represents their brand and nothing but the best will do. Bottom line is this -- I only have one head of hair and if someone screws it up - cut or color - I have to live with it 24/7. I can't imagine not going to KaRu for this very reason. I'd recommend anyone that takes pride in looking their best to try them out even if you already have a salon in Austin. You won't be disappointed.

Salon owner, Kari Leon-Guerrero, offers a down-to-earth, honest and professional approach to her clients. Kari listened to my concerns and desires for my hair and offered realistic advice for me and my hair-type so my expectations were not only met, but exceeded. The vibe in her space is chill and comfortable and her personal energy is lovely. She provided me with a hairstyle that gave my hair more volume and offered suggestions for me to use on a daily basis to keep the volume alive! I really appreciated the way Kari listened to me, offered advice based on my concerns and specific hair-type and I left feeling beautiful! Kari has such a nice finesse about her, incorporating experience, professionalism, talent and good vibes all the way around.

Best salon I ever been to in my entire life. I personally don't go to any salon that often and I decided to go to KaRu because I wanted to treat myself after the labor and my birthday. They had really amazing atompshere that you could be yourself. I had Aili got my hair done, she's very talented. She also knew what excatly you wanted and make sure that the colors doesn't be all wasted by telling me to go for little darker colors to turned them out to the colors I wanted because I wanted baby colors for my hair (violet, pink, green and blue). I'm sure that they will last for a while. And I had a really good trim, too. Alyssa who checks you in and out from the salon, she was very kind, too! It'll worth every pennies of your money!

I had the pleasure of using Karu Salon on my virgin hair a few years ago and it was an amazing experience. Flash forward, I moved out of town and had to go elsewhere with less than great experiences. I kept up with their social media and decided to come back recently for a color correction and help with my blonde brassy tones. Plus, I wanted something less boring!! Haley Roberts did an AMAZING job bringing in some low lights and cool tones. EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED. Praise the hair Gods, girls and guys! She really understood what I was asking for. Not to mention she and Rachel were super cool and that makes a difference when you spend a few hours at a salon. Thanks for going above and beyond. Can’t wait to come back.

An amazing experience! Haley was simply the best stylist. She was nothing but fun and the results of my hair are incredible. She was extremely professional, and courteous and always asked if I needed or wanted anything. Pricing was very reasonable and accurate for the services described. Our color consultation was extremely helpful and I knew what I was going into the following week. Haley has a gift and natural talent for styling and coloring hair! Haley is an incredible artist! The staff are nothing but the sweetest people, and we all had a good time together. The salon manager Niki was especially sweet and professional. Very easy to talk to! Will come again!

Kari is the best colorist in Austin! I've been to so many other colorists- even big names in NYC and other cities and have yet to find anyone better than Kari. I am extremely guarded about just anyone applying color to my hair, but completely trust Kari. She is consistent, thorough and meticulous. I have long blonde hair and she gets it right every time! Also, my color doesn't fade quickly (unlike a well known plant-based color name that I won't mention), but not only that, Kari listens to what you want and takes time to discuss what she's going to do.I highly recommend her if you are looking for a good colorist in Austin. Love this salon!

This is Chris's wife, Amanda, and I've been going to Karu salon since they opened 5 years ago and I love it! The atmosphere is inviting, the people are friendly and the location is convenient no matter which direction I have to come from that day. Having curly hair can be a challenge for anyone except my awesome stylist Tim who knows just how to handle these crazy locks. Kari is my colorist and without her, I would be lost! She has a solid 15 years of experience under her belt and it shows every time. I always look forward to getting my hair done at Karu because I know I'll leave there 1,000 times happier than when I walked in!

Natalie colored my daughter's hair. She has almost black hair and she wanted to get blue streaks. As 'non-natural' color is against her school dress code we wanted something that could be hidden. Natalie talked through how she could do it so that the streaks showed when she wanted to or hide them when she didn't. It looked fabulous. I returned to Karu to get a hair cut for myself from Destiny. She discussed with me my options and did a fabulous cut. She totally listened to my desires (mainly that I needed something largely maintenance free). I love my new cut and have received a lot of compliments,

I had the best experience at KaRu Salon! Needed a makeover for my long hair that reached the middle of my back. I was very nervous because I have always had long hair but had a desire for a more updated look. Kari really listened to what I wanted and how long I wanted to spend styling my hair every morning. My color and cut is even better then I imagined. Kari took the time to educate me on how to use styling products to fit my hair care needs and showed me how to style my hair for a casual look and then a dressy look. LOVE my hair and the experience I had. I will be coming back to this salon!!

I am new to Texas and was stressed and anxious about finding a stylist who could give me a great cut that suited my face and help me start to make progress with my very damaged hair. I love this place! Tina is amazing! She is so kind, open-hearted, and wonderful to be in the chair with. Gotta love those ginger dreads! She gives me amazing color with great cuts--just what I ask for. I have total trust and let her do her thing. Getting my hair done used to be a chore, but now I look forward to it! My best friend and I both see Tina for color, and she rocks it! Every. Time. Dionne is amazing at cutting my friend's curly hair. It always looks fierce. She also did a wonderful job styling our hair for my friend's wedding. Couldn't recommend this place more!

I really enjoyed going to this salon! Kari was the one who worked on my hair, and she did an amazing job. I had half my hair split dyed violet and then covered with black dye. She was able to lift the black and the violet pigment out of my hair in one session, allowing me to get my hair re-dyed back to my natural color (dark brown), without any weird pink undertones. She also cut my hair and did a great job at giving it shape and movement, especially since I have a ton of hair. The salon was also very cute and had a calming aura about it. I highly recommend this salon!

I just started going here this past Fall and absolutely love it. Just simply walking in is my favorite because the interior is decorated very old and classy. You'll see upside down hand mirrors hanging. The customer service is more than pleasant and comfortable. Just everyone makes you feel good. My hair dresser is the best yet. I'm sure they all are wonderful but Anna is AMAZING. She is super sweet and chill and knows so well with how to give you the style you want with it still looking flattering on you specifically. Of course I'll always recommend her!

Kari is amazing! I had some highlights done previously that I was unhappy with. They made my naturally brunette hair way too blonde. Kari was able to bring me back to a more natural looking brunette with honey toned highlights. I love the layers she cut into my hair, they give me so much more body. She spent time talking me through the process, and explained how to style my hair and keep it looking great for days. Her salon is clean, bright, and calming. She’s easy to schedule and communicate with. I haven’t loved my hair this much in years.

My stylist Angela did an amazing job with cutting and styling my hair. I love layers and while they looked great when I was younger with a full mane of thick hair, my hair has been thinning over the past decade. Angela still did an amazing job at giving me the layers I wanted, while still making it work with the volume (or lack thereof) of my hair. She also has a great personality! Great conversations, great service, great skills, and great outlook on life. I'll definitely be back to see Angela at KaRu for my future hair needs!

Absolutley love this salon! Chill atmosphere, awesome employees and a great owner and manager! Niki, the manager, made sure my service with Haley was the best experience it could be from beginning to end! She was thorough and addressed about any issues I had with ease and was very professional. Haley is an amazing stylist and you should definitely go see her for any cut or color needs! She is spectacular at pixie cuts and her color is literally out of this world. KaRu rocks! If I could give it more stars I would.

Every time I am in Texas, I can’t wait to have Kari do my hair. She always exceeds my exceptions. This is the first time I said, "I want a makeover." I wanted some length cut off. Other than that…I said, “I trust you. Do what you do.” I received the best cut and color I have ever received! Terrible customer service, I made an appointment 2 months in advance for my sister’s wedding. The time that I had originally scheduled my appointment, no longer worked for me. I called to reschedule, and the young lady who helped me was apparently too busy to figure out a better time that would work. Or to provide a little customer service.This is an industry that is built around servicing your clientele. If you are wanting a friendly atmosphere with great stylist beware ladies this is not the place!!

I’ve been going to Kari for many years now, and have yet to find a colorist as skilled as she is. She matches coloring to bring out your natural skin/eye color, always accommodates any special requests beautifully, and even took care of me when I was pregnant and hot in the chair (found a smock with way more air flow for me). She now cuts my hair too, and again, does an amazing job always. I cannot recommend her enough and always leave feeling happy and renewed. Go visit Kari asap!

Toni is THE BEST colorist for blondes!!! I tried three different salons after moving from Denver, where I felt I had the best hair stylist, to Austin and was super bummed....until I found Toni. She is very knowledgable and can figure out how to get you the exact color you want. I trusted her to do my hair one week before my wedding and I'm glad I did. She's also super fun to hang out with and talk to during appointments...I won't be salon hopping anymore!!!!

Loooove this salon! I had my hair cut and colored by Anna and she's amazing! I usually don't like how my straight hair looks after I get it cut but I told Anna what I do and don't like and she cut it exactly how I wanted. During another visit she colored my hair a vibrant purple and the result was gorgeous! I also love the look and vibe of the salon, and the customer service is great. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I will be back for sure.

KaRu remains my favorite salon ever. I’ve been going here for my color with Kari (the owner) and cut with her other stylists for 4 years. They are always attentive and listen to what you want and do a stellar job on my color/cut. During the quarantine time the owner was helpful with curbside retail pickup for items I was running low on and with the reopening I’m confident in their standards and processes. Definitely one of the best salons in Austin.

Anna is incredible! I have been going to her for over a year now and she never disappoints. She is very good at understanding just what style I'm looking for. I tend to stick to subtle highlights that add a bit of dimension to my hair, and she's awesome at making them look very natural. Also, the salon atmosphere is wonderful. The salon is decorated beautifully, and the nice receptionist offered me a variety of different beverages upon my arrival.

I was visiting town and needed some highlights badly. I had a few hours on my business trip and I decided to give someone new a shot. Side note: I have been going to the same stylist for 13 yrs and she is currently on maternity leave in my home state. What a great decision, Kristin was a such pro with color and did a beautiful job, such a shame that I don't live in the state, or I would definitely be a regular here.

I have had color work done over the years, but this level of service and knowledge top notch. If you are wanting something fun or something that looks very natural, they have the products, knowledge and staff to get you looking like the best possible you. Best Color in Central Texas!

Kari gave my hair a new lease on life. I booked a consultation with her which was well worth it considering I was a new customer. She explained my options and helped me to come up with a strategy for maintaining my style without breaking the bank. She helped me decide on a plan and then she went to work. I love what she did with my color, and the cut was the best I've had in a very long time.

Worst experience of my life. I HAD near platinum hair, wanted some silver with minimal low lights. 6 1/2 hours later, back is pretty, front is grey with a huge chunk of muddy brown after i specifically said small amounts of low lights. Then she cut my hair. Did nothing I asked and chopped it off. Did get a refund that I appreciate but want to charge an arm and leg to fix. NO THANK YOU!!!

Tina Spears is my colorist at KaRu Salon and I love her! She has been my colorist for many years. Tina has great expertise and always does a great job mixing my hair color for beautiful results. She is very personable and I very much enjoy my visits with her. The owner and management staff are all friendly, helpful, and very professional. I always look forward to my visits to KaRu.

After living in Austin for almost 4 years, I have finally found a hair salon!!! If you need a dye job, book with Katie Austin. Katie has dyed my hair a couple of times (ombré and baylage), and did a fantastic job. Belle Star is also a must see; she gave me the most beautiful layered hair cut. I will be coming to this salon exclusively from now on. :)

I unfortunately did not like my color service. The staff is friendly and tried to make it work but could not find the right formula of color for the result I was expecting. I am pretty disappointed. I spent $200 and did not get the results I asked for. It seems they were more interested in doing what they wanted to my hair versus what I asked for.

My first time going today. The salon is vintage and adorable - I loved the atmosphere. Haley was a great hairdresser and really listened to what I wanted. She is so friendly and bubbly! She didn’t even have to cut much of my hair for it to look fresher and cleaner. Price was very reasonable as well. I will definitely be going back, thanks ladies!

I've been to KaRu on 3 occasions. Each time I've had a different stylist, but each time I've had a great cut and good experience. The salon is beautiful, the stylists skilled and knowledgeable. They are professional and don't spend all their time trying to up sell product or services. The prices are competitive and very fair. Highly recommended!

I have been a loyal customer of Kari, the owner, for almost a decade. Her skill level is that of such... I KNEW it was a matter of time before she would open her own salon. I came in to see Kari for a color correction. Kari's technique is excellent, and she did a great job on my hair. I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted and was nervous, but Kari took that and listened to me thoroughly and recommended what would be best for my look. I especially love my hair now, once it faded, it's even better! Thanks Kari!!!

i have been going to this salon for at least 10 years or more. i would never go elsewhere (Tina). The staff is friendly, warm and accommodating. After so many experiences at salons, I had so many trust issues! But I took a leap of faith and went to KaRu and I am in LOVE. Amber is amazing and I totally recommend! Angela is an amazing stylist. You are in good hands if you book with her. Tons of experience, and a creative genius. Plus, she has a great sense of humor and fun to talk to. I use her for highlights and cuts, but I’ve seen her work on bridal up-do styles and she does beautiful work.

As a new client, I felt very comfortable and was pleased. Payton made my hair goals come true, she was very honest and upfront with if my hair color goal was even possible and then she out did herself!! I am so in love with my hair and will definitely be coming back to see Payton!

Great success! I moved from SF and was disappointed in the two different salons that tried to retouch my red hair. Karu now has a new loyal customer. Kari did a great job with cut and color and talked me though the pros and cons of what I wanted. I'm happy with the results!

New to Austin and needed my wife's hair to be worked on. Visited this salon randomly and fell in love with the clean and beautiful atmosphere. Booked an appointment with Kristina W. and couldn't be happier! Made my wife so happy and she looks amazing! What an artist!

Brittany is the most talented hair stylist I know in Austin. She always hears what I want my hair to look like and asks thoughtful questions to make that happen. I love coming in for hair cuts and color. It’s also super rare to find a place with ample parking.

I can't say enough about this salon. They carry Oribe (my fave) and they are truly the masters of color I had been looking for. My hair was a wreck before and they changed it to hair I love and feel proud of. Professional, talented, and stylish...love them!

Employees are skilled and knowledgeable, and they use high-quality products, but their prices are higher than comparable places. To give you an idea, there was about a $100 price difference on a long hair balayage between KaRu and the place I go now.
