The place to go if you want them to give you a meat pie when you order a vegetarian pie and to be treated poorly by management for their mistake. The staff member was very apologetic but when I contacted the owner or manager to see if anything could be done to avoid this in the future, they first ignored me then made up lies about the interaction. Not once did management indicate they cared or would try and avoid meat Pies being sold instead of non meat Pies in the future. This to me clearly indicates that they don't care about providing the right item to customers or the risk of feeding a meat pie to a vegetarian. Hopefully management or ownershop change their attitude. Mistakes happen, you should learn from them. If you want sourdough, go to the nearby Harvest Cafe.
These fine folks are slinging some of the best sourdough going from a diminutive shopfront. No surprise for anyone familiar with their sister store, who've been perfecting the art of sourdough for longer than anyone in Melbourne. The fig, fennel, and walnut loaf is possibly the perfect cheeseboard bread, with stern competition from the olive baguette. White sourdough and pumpkin are awesome for sangas or with spreads. Don't overlook the sweet options either; after years of holding out on the cronut wave, it was a perfect puck of honeycomb and sunbeams from Kneadful that won me over. Masterfully balanced between flaky outside, buttery dough and creamy filling. Resist if you must, but I can't lie to you about your chances.
atmosphere is nice. Food is alright but by far the worst customer service place ive been to. I came in to buy a croissant today and asked if he did it toasted. The guy pulled a face many times like i was an idiot to ask and said “uh we don’t toast croissants”. When in fact, I had it done before. He continued to pull a face at me. He could've simply said sorry no we don’t do this rather than pulling a face. I then proceeded to leave to a bakery next door who kindly served me AND toasted my croissant. Safe to say, i’ll never come back to Kneadful Things.

When in knead of tasty, crusty, aromatic carbohydrates I look no further than Kneadful! The multigrain casalinga is my favourite and they put a something in it that reminds me of my childhood, buying bread with my granny. The pastries are also to die for and one needs to be careful not to overdo it. Such a welcomed addition to the Fairfield village. And quite frankly I’m GLAD they just accept card. As if I want to handle dirty gross coins and cash with the same hand that I’m about to devour an almond croissant?
Always support local small business but when customer service is poor it sends you elsewhere. Opening hours are 7:30am - on Friday (17/6) got there @ 7:30 to the doors closed with blinds down, staff member putting baked goods out. She looked at me waiting then kept putting things away, went out the back and disappeared - @ 7:40 I had to go to the opposition as school lunches had to be made. This is not the way to treat locals if you want to survive in tough conditions.
I like the name as it's a great homage to Stephen King, the bread however is excellent and payment is delightfully very straight forward by card. There's no breaking your neighbours windows for a loaf of sour dough or setting fire to a house for a rye bread. I appreciate the simplicity of each transaction especially when I don't have the energy for such destruction first thing in the morning before I've had a cup of cofee & Vegemite toast.
My husband is a baker and simply, we couldn’t resist trying most of the menu. The pies and sausage rolls are to die for, old school baking. The desserts are on another level, the time put into the product are obvious. The breads are next level, the staff are friendly and helpful. Such an enjoyable experience, we live in country Victoria and will make the drive back to visit again! Well done guys!
Best bread in Melbourne. We travel especially to buy it. Recently excited to see paper bags in use rather than plastic but I was told it was only because the ties used for the plastic bags were not available. Whilst I understand that cost is the issue, I hope that you can opt for paper bags and then no need for the ties either. They're both bad for the environment. Cheers Ken Ivanhoe
Kneadful Things has become our go-to bakery. The bread here is outstanding and very reasonably priced for the quality. The other day we went to try another bakery but just ended up leaving and going straight back to Kneadful Things instead! I definitely recommend the Rye Casa loaf and also the Olive loaf. The Hemp loaf is also delicious if you're keen on something a little different.
Excellent pies when available been there several times don’t go after 2 tho they sell out don’t stock enough and change varieties daily also no cash but will except cash if you have right money when they feel like it it doesn’t seem to bother them when you leave when you have forgotten your card bring back cash And a bit more customer service I’m sure you’d get a lot more business
Kneadful is my go to for gluten-free bread - I can't eat the cardboard from the supermarket anymore after tasting their delicious GF seeded, fruit loaf and olive bread. Also well priced compared to other places (please don't change!) Soooo good! I'd love to see some other GF options like pastries, pies.... The others look so good but I can't indulge... just sayin
Omg, why am I only now discovering this joint? Seriously best pies you'll ever stuff ya face with. Excellent service even though I looked like a total hobo. No cash policy but I won't hold it against them. So glad I can finally get a decent pie locally. Everything looks so fresh and tasty. I had the beef and mushroom pie.
I haven't been here but my boyfriend recently brought home sourdough from this bakery. We have been looking for a decent sourdough for months and nothing really lives up to what we have had in Europe until finding this gem. It's amazing we will definitely be purchasing the sour dough regularly. …
Best donuts, fresh but not too fluffy, just right, with a choice of jam, custard, Nutella and more. And wonderful bread too, we love the Ciabatta the best. Lots more too. And try the custard and raspberry brioche bun cake thing, top secret and big enough to share. All very yummy.
I bought a pack of hot cross buns. They were delicious, light with lots of spice. The lady who served me was very bright and welcoming. There was a very good selections of lovely looking breads at reasonable prices for artisan products. I look forward to trying some of them.
I had to go back to the shop and say to the girls that seriously that was the best sausage roll I have ever had!! -it was just random- once every couple months I go thru Fairfield on a job as i live in Beaconsfield- SO looking forward to having another
My Favourite Fairfield Bakery! Melbournes oldest traditional sourdough - amazing! House made old school pies to die for. Pastries that I can never seem to walk past, they call my name and normally come home with me. Cannot get enough of this bakery!
This pastry took me straight back to Paris! Quite frankly the best danish I’ve ever had in Melbourne. Cannot recommend the pear and pistachio danish highly enough. Will definitely be back. Just wishing they did an excellent coffee to pair it with!
They don't accept cash, not even $6.50 for a pie. The reason given was 'business decision' and 'security reasons' even though Fairfield is one of the safest crime-free areas in Victoria. Seems classest to me, they only want affluent customers
Shared a egg & bacon quiche, bbq pork pie, blueberry danish and a raspberry muffin with my partner this morning and we are totally obsessed. Everything from the customer service to the homemade jams are perfect. New local favourite for sure!
Best bakery around. Our family can't stop talking about how good the bread is, and what type to try next. We are loving the Danish bread. The bread is great. The Cronuts are amazing. Don't buy any, leave them all for me. Love your bakery.
We tried the almond croissant, Paine au chocolate, and took home a fig fennel and walnut loaf. From the product to the display and customer service everything was simply beautiful and at a good price!
Their olive loaf is absolutely amazing!!!! They don't skimp out on olives either. I ate mine on its own with a little olive oil. I've tried olive breads in other places, but this one tops it.
I just had a Pepper Steak pie from Kneadful Things. It is the best pie I have had in Australia after living here for over 20 years. Chunky steak and gravy with loads of flavour. Thank you.
Highly recommend this new bakery! Picked up an amazing chicken and vegetable pie this morning and also received really warm and friendly service. Can't wait to try their sweet options :)
Only had a croissant, and came back straight after eating it, to buy a bread ! That’s how good and fluffy the little gem of a croissant was . Will be back ! …
Was bit of a chicken to go in, but decided to have an almond croissant. It was delightfully light and crisp, not at all heavy and stodgy....thanks and well done!
Ordered the cheese and bacon focaccia. Very tasty and you can tell its been made with care rather than slapping on a couple ingredients. Highly recommend.
I must say… I had the best pie of my life today… whoever made the steak jalapeño and cheese pie on Friday the 14th of April deserves a round of applause.
This is my favourite bakery. The ciabata is so soft and crusty and the pastry on the sausage roll is like nothing else. Can't recommend highly enough.
The olive loaf is phenomenal, really good for sourdough bread. The desserts and pies are a bit on the pricey side though
Outstanding bakery. The focaccias and cinnamon scrolls are favourites. Always a novel variety of sweet baked goods too.
Was very disappointed to learn that Kneadful things have stopped accepting cash. Won't be back unfortunately.
Always high quality and a great selection of baked goods. Lucky to have such a nice bakery in Fairfield!
Great bread. Best pies going around. Truly the best pie I’ve had in years. Love to know the secret!
Got a wonderful loaf of olive bread, the man who served me was so warm and friendly. Great bakery!
Went to purchase lunch to find out no cash! Went to the better bakery down the road instead. :)
Fantastic and delicious pastries that don’t break the bank - a Fairfield gem!

OMG, we got an olive bread this morning not just saying it "The best bread we've ever have"
Imagine refusing cash as a payment....this place does..... I'll shop elsewhere thanks.
Best sausage rolls I’ve EVER had. I just get sad when I miss out on them, make more!!
Definately a business to boycott taking only credit cards must be a pro CBDC owner.
Ordered a vegan chickpea and lentil pie, when I bit into it was full of meat
Lost a long term customer. Doesn’t accept cash. What a joke
Fig and walnut loaf is the stuff people write poetry about
Bomb as can be, legit best bakery I've ever been to.
Incredible sour cherry danish and cinnamon buns.
Spicy fruit loaf ? No spice no fruit !
Amazing sourdough baguettes …
That was a dang good cronut
The best pies …
