I'm always looking for interesting places to go with my toddler, and we have been frequenting the Leonis Adobe for years now. The staff is super friendly! Shout out to our favorite guide, Tomu (I hope I spelled that right)! My son loves water fountains, and there is one right before you even enter, which he loves. I should mention there is free parking. When you go in the first little house there is a gift shop and some museum items about the property. This is where you pay. It is by donation, but you can get a season pass for only $40! They are only open Friday's during the week (and weekends I think in addition to special events). I do wish they were open more. You can buy goat or chicken food for only a dollar. Outside there are many things to look at. The animals are of course a favorite! They have sheep, goats, various types of chickens, turkey's, roosters, two ver large horses and some very impressive texas long horns! There are also many things to look at on the property, including the actual Leonis Adobe Museum which you can walk through. This is where my toddler got tons of practice going up and down the strais! haha. My son loves the giant triangle that he can hit, the water pump that he can no do by himself and he loves walking up the giant stairs to what was some of the worker's quarters. While on one hand I could see folks coming here and think it's not a ton of stuff compared to other large museums... for a small museum there is actually a ton to explore! There are a bunch of little displays and rooms all around for the kids to explore. There's also just a nice big space when my toddler was more into running around and I was crazy bored of parks and playgrounds. There are also cats that walk around that he loves to look at. So if you're in LA with kids and haven't explored this yet... do yourself a favor and get over here next Friday! ps... They also have a large garden around the corner that we actually haven't even done yet! Get a coffee in the coffee shop in the back of The Peddler's Fork across the street!

As Los Angeles City Cultural Landmark #1, the Leonis Adobe Museum is dedicated to restoring, preserving, and sharing the last of the old west. Here, you can experience California ranch life of the late 1800s…visit a Victorian-style early Los Angeles home… see what a jail was like in the Wild West…enjoy a picnic in picturesque Calabasas Park with its antique ironwork and lovely gardens. The Leonis Adobe was the home of Miguel Leonis, known as the King of Calabasas. The museum features his authentically furnished two-story Monterey-style adobe with original buildings, period livestock, gardens and a vineyard--all part of Leonis' recreated ranch where he once ruled the territory. The Leonis Adobe Museum offers Public Tours, Educational Field Trips, Group Tours, Scout Tours and Ground Rentals. Memberships are also available with many benefits. Special Events are held throughout the year. The Leonis Adobe is a California legend you won't want to miss!

The museum actually combines two in one: the actual Leonis Adobe plus the house of Leonis' friends that was brought to here from LA and thus saved from destruction. The old ladies working at the place are just adorable! The history of the ranch is very interesting and dramatic, but I would recommend you to make your own research about it. The story of Miguel Leonis, the Frenchment who came to California to pursuit his dreams, as did Millions of others, would make a wonderful Hollywood movie. At adobe area, there are a cute little garden, a tiny fountain, a horses, a very friendly sheep and goats, a lot of the authentic "old stuff" enough to imagine how people lived a hundred years ago.

I honestly don’t know how people rate this place with 5 stars. Today we had a field trip to this museum and we had the Chumash village tour. The place is nice but the instructors were very unfriendly, unpleasant, impatient and even rude with the kids. Only one male instructor was nice , but most of the female instructor, especially one of them were very impatient. If your child have a field trip to this place, I highly recommend not to send them there. The kids were very excited about this field trip, and it was a Disappointment for them, they are only 10 years old and should be treated better. This ladies should not work with kids.

Located right in the middle of Calabasas town center this little museum is pretty impressive. Not only the house itself is interesting but the grounds have a barn with animals like sheep who actually bare babies, barn cats, cattle, goats, chickens, turkeys and Guinea fowl. Also on display is a variety of farm machinery from the times long gone. I would recommend visiting here and another historical site in the area on the same day. King Gillette Ranch is only 20 minutes drive from here. Adamson House is about 35 minutes away. This way you get the wide scope of and feel for what people lived like over one hundred years ago.

My paternal Great-grandmother, actually lived here as a little girl! I've gotten to visit twice, once when I was 8 & again when I was 12. Both times my Nana (grandma) went with us & told us the history she knew about the house & about how it was, for my Great Nana growing up there! I absolutely LOVE everything about this place & all the history; it's wonderful! I definitely plan on bringing my sons there someday! (Btw, my grandma's maiden name was Orsua)

It had alot of cool stuff the animals were a plus they had chickens turkeys, cats, horses long horned cows, sheep goats, etc.... the staff was very helpful and told us the history of the adobe museum which was pretty interesting. It was extremely hot this day but it was very nice. I would definitely return. You can take your kids or you can go alone with friends or family, you'll love it. They also have a very pretty garden.

This was an adventure and educational museum. So I came here to do a little historical & paranormal research. But first I need to get some info... I really didn't know much of anything about this museum. Buy got a lot of great information about the past life here. And how it was developed.

Fun local museum for my two girls. Right off the freeway in Calabasas, and within walking distance to shopping and great food. The animals at the Adobe were a plus. Staff very friendly and extremely knowledgeable on the Adobe and local history. A must visit for any local or tourist traveling through Calabasas. Very well maintained ground and artifacts.

I really enjoyed the visit there, which takes you 150 years back, to the days of the western movies, when all the area was pretty wild. I also wrote a post, describing this lovely museum, and you are invited there as well, but it can't be linked here.

A facinating piece of history. You'll come away with a clear view of what California was like prior to industrialization. The docents are friendly and extremely knowledgeable. A great place to bring visitors from out of state or your kids.

  • Eric Rosenberg

Had a very nice visit with the family on a Saturday afternoon. Perfect for an hour or so to learn about local history.
