review date: april 17, 2021 photos added: september 18, 2021, november 26, 2021 the caribbean-canadian restaurant (CCR) is run by a lady named sandra with her helpers. i've been purchasing their food on an ongoing basis for 6 years. CCR on the mountain, and famous recipe downtown, are the heavyweight champions of the city when it comes to caribbean food. -fantastic restaurant located at concession and East 21st near upper wentworth. paid parking available on concession street and paid/free spots on the side streets. -my personal favorite items are the chicken/beef curri rotis, chow meins and fried rices. patties are excellent, they'll give you that island feeling. and on fridays/saturdays only they feature doubles, while supplies last. CCR's menu imo is the most versatile in the city for caribbean food. you can pick roti, stew, rice or chow mein items, patties and doubles and NOT go wrong. -cost is very fair for what they give you. the portions are huge and go very far. -food is prepared fresh everyday from scratch, on days that CCR is open. this sounds like common sense, but understand some other caribbean places use frozen food. -my advice is phone in before going in, so that you can verify that they have what you want, and to save time from waiting on location. the other reason to call 1st is that roti and curry especially, are labor-intensive items to make...so your best chance to get it is ordering a few hours b4 closing. -one star gets knocked off bcuz they may not answer the phone when they are very busy. in that case you're going to have to make your way to the restaurant. -congratulations sandra on all your hard work with the store, and wishing you all the best going forward. bottom line: i will continue to support CCR and would recommend such to anyone else interested in enjoying good quality caribbean food.

I opted to try the Roti as recommended by a friend and let me tell you, the roti itself is absolutely divine - it's soft, with just the right amount of chewiness to it. The curry filling is bursting with flavor and spices, and it's clear that they take great care in preparing their recipe. The blend of potatoes, chickpeas, and tender chicken makes for a mouthwatering combination that will leave you wanting more. And if you can handle it, please get the hot sauce. The acidity paired with a floral burst of Scotch-Bonnets really completes to dish by cutting through this rich and decadent roti. What really sets this family-owned business apart is the sense of community and tradition that they bring to their food. You can tell that their recipes have been passed down with care, and that they take great pride in keeping those traditions alive. It's a truly special experience to be able to enjoy such delicious food while also feeling like you're part of the family. Overall, I can't recommend Lyn's Caribbean Canadian Restaurant enough. Whether you're a longtime fan of Caribbean cuisine or just looking to try something new, you won't be disappointed. It's the perfect blend of flavors and hospitality, and I guarantee that you'll leave with a smile on your face and a happy belly.

10/10 Give this place a second chance good and flavours are just like Sandra’s. I am a long time regular supporter of Sandra’s. Since the change in ownership we haven’t been back, until recently when I said I would give it a second chance regardless of the reviews. I was surprised that the jerk chicken dinner was pretty much the same, other than the chicken being a little dry, the rice having a little less seasoning than before, and the coleslaw being less creamy. All the flavours were there and the portion sizes are still the same. Today I ordered our go to Jerk Chicken and Oxtail dinner which is my absolute favourite dish. Everything was hot, fresh, flavourful, the chicken was moist, the oxtail tender with all of Sandra’s distinct flavours. I would say to anyone who is having second thoughts or tried it early on during the changeover in ownership, give this place and Lyn a second shot. As a former weekly customer, I will definitely be back once again! Sorry I didn’t get a picture of the jerk chicken as my wife ate some before I could capture a picture.

For all the people complaining it’s new owners yes it is but it’s also the SAME old kitchen staff doing the SAME old recipes. I would really suggest trying it again before giving up, sometimes places have off days but this gem of a place shouldn’t be given up on for the possibility of that reason. The new owner is wonderful, Moh makes the best food with the sweetest service to go with it and the whole staff is just great! Also, the butter chicken is new to the menu and it is a MUST TRY!!!!!

I gotta admit to being a little sad by my latest trip up here. The new people thst took over from Sandra are lovely and I like the new hours and really appreciate that they started accepting non-cash payments but the food... we ordered a chicken roti and a stewed beef and while the portion size was good the meals themselves were definitely less flavourful than before. Even after adding the entire containers of hot sauce, which before would have set mouths on fire, everything just tasted okay. No wow worthy, OMG I should make the hour long trip to get this again moments. Hopefully it was just an off day cuz I've coming to CC for 10+ years, well before the move.

Haven’t been in a very long time and have been craving for awhile since I have moved out of Hamilton. This was the spot for the squad back in day and college. Food used to be amazing and would get on a weekly basis. After today, I must that I am very very very…. Disappointed of what has happened to the good old great jerk chicken. It was dry and flavour ain’t the same with the coleslaw dry and bland.. it don’t got the same creaminess to it. Chicken has also gotten a bit smaller and don’t fall off the bone like it used to.. (which was my favourite part).. :( not sure if I’d go back but maybe if there are improvements in the future then I would maybe consider.. Goodluck to all and May all get a 3 piece jerk chicken..

Greatly improved from the first weeks of the new owner's takeover. We honestly thought we wouldn't be ordering again as previous roti were not up to the standard of the previous owner. Decided to try again tonight after reading recent reviews. We ordered goat roti. The quality of the roti and the filling were very much improved. The seasoning of the goat is different from Sandra's but is very nice. The goat was incredibly tender. The hot sauce had great flavour and was a good heat level. We live very close to the restaurant in the neighbourhood ( 2 minute drive) and my only complaint was that it wasn't really hot by the time it got home and had to be reheated a bit but that wasn't a big deal for me given how delicious it was.

Couldn't resist the delicious smell of Caribbean food when we attended Sidewalk Sounds on Concession. There is a small eating area and most patrons were waiting on take out. Order at the counter as you walk in. Be warned! The portions are massive. And so delicious. We ordered a chicken curry roti and an order of curry chickpeas on rice. We got 6 meals out of 2 dishes!!! The chicken curry had chunks of chicken and potatoes in curry sauce that had a mild heat, all wrapped in a roti. Would definitely order this again. The curry chickpeas in rice was a great vegetarian dish, loved the flavour of the potatoes, I think they made the dish. Great place to stop in and bring dinner home. We waited about 20-25 minutes for our order. Will definitely return to try other dishes.

I am a professional chef and I love to visited different restaurants to test there cooking and first to begin with the double was not to the standard that I expected. it was like fry bake and the chick peas was really hard on bite and had throw it away I ordered goat roti without potatoe because my brother can't eat potatoes that also I had to throw out also had to wait almost 2 hour's for the order so guys you all need to step up the place was really clean for one thing I can sure but the food is not all that you all need a Trinidadian to work alongside you all because the doubles is not DOUBLES you all are make it is bake and Curry chick peas.........

New owners are ruining this place. My family has been coming here for years with the old owners. Specifically for the ox tail, but the rest of the food was fantastic as well. The new owners clearly did not get any of the recipes from the previous owners because the food has had a severe decline. Specifically, the ox tail has gone from a beautiful balance of sweet and savory flavors with fall-off-the-bone tender meat, and flavorful rice; to a salty, yet flavorless mess of tough meat, and plain rice. I think this will unfortunately be the last time we come here, as the food just simply was depressing. From a restaurant that i would get excited to get food from, to one that i think i will be avoiding from now on.

If you grew up eating roti then this is not the place for you. Second time trying it since the new owners and I won't be back. Ordered chicken roti, beef roti, pholaurie and doubles. The curry itself wasn't bad but the roti skin was hard and tasted stale. Some of the pholaurie was either burnt, full of oil or hard as a rock. Threw it out. Now for the doubles, they were so awful I had to laugh. The bread part of it resembled a burger bun, just as thick. The chick peas inside were hard. Threw that out. Wasn't even edible. I spent over $50 in food and 75%went in the garbage. But hey you live and learn, let's just say I definitely won't be going back. I'm still laughing , the doubles were hideous rofl.

No idea what happened. This place used to be #1 in the GTA but I haven't been here for awhile. It's changed! The jerk chicken is not the same, it's good, it's about 8.5/10 but it used to be 10/10 (back when Sandra was on Gage the jerk was 12/10 but too hot for the public). Can't imagine why they would change anything. The old chicken roti was identical to the Award winner in Toronto (the one on Bathurst) only it was BIGGER, making it the best in the GTA imo. Best advice... Get Sandra back once a year to taste test everything. Don't settle for 8/10. The jerk chicken needed salt imo.

It isn’t easy to find a great Caribbean restaurant, it also isn’t easy to find great vegan/plant based options, so to be able to access both of those things here is fantastic! I can’t decide whether I like the chickpea curry roti or chickpea curry rice option the best, but this is a wonderful dilemma to have each time I visit.

I never leave reviews but tbh I am not too sure why someone would take a restaurant that is packed with satisfied customers and thriving..: and change the recipes to sub-par food! A complete waste of my money! I used to eat here, along with my family, a couple times a week… spending easily a couple hundred but now I tried it once with new owners and haven’t been back! Even as I waited for food a dissatisfied customer was complaining about the quality and they assured her nothing had changed! A complete lie! Please let me know when you go back to the original owners recipes as that was some of the best Caribbean food that not only myself but everyone I know has ever eaten!

What an amazing experience! Ours was a birthday party for 30 people and it was our first time. We were NOT disappointed. The oxtail was awesome, juicy and tender with plenty of gravy. The Herb Chicken was baked perfectly, delicious and well seasoned, just the way west Indians aka Guyanese like their meat seasoned. Our party guests were happy, with generous portions. Your food was firah 10/10. Service was 4/5 because no delivery. Thank you every much. You will definitely see us again! We will come for the food and your smiles is a bonus. You are a star .

My husband and I were initially disappointed when we had the jerk chicken after the new owners took over a few months ago. But I have to say, after giving it another shot, we were happy with the food. The only thing I really miss is the creaminess of the coleslaw. If they could go back to that recipe, it would be back to 5/5 for me. (I know they say they haven’t changed anything since Sandra sold, but I beg to differ — and the reviews don’t lie, there are definitely differences). Overall, the jerk chicken was greatly improved from my last visit.

We have always gone to this restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the veggie roti. I am guessing it has now changed owners, because it was nothing like the quality and taste of food that we experienced previously.. very disappointed.. the chickpeas were hard, and the entire roti was flavorless. I that’s very hard. Unfortunately I will not be going to this restaurant again. I normally don’t ever post reviews but I can’t expressed my disappointment as I was always so excited to have dinner from this restaurant

I had heard about this place and happened to be in the neighbourhood. I had the boneless goat curry on rice. Meat was absolutely tender, potatoes were delicious and the rice & beans were plump. Perfect amount of sauce and you add your own heat. Also had the chickpea curry as a roti. Also very delicious. Roti was still intact the next morning, not soggy. Both orders must have weighed 2 pounds each! Only warning is that it can be a wait. I was there on a Saturday night at 7 pm and the estimated wait time was 30 minutes. I came back around 8:10 and waited about 15 minutes. If I'm ever in Hamilton, I always try to come here.

  • Junior S

Maybe it’s cause I came at close but the food was ok. It was the best Caribbean food I’ve had in Hamilton but that ain’t saying much. I’ll try them again at an appropriate time and hopefully my experience will be different and if so I’ll update my score plus review but for now they are the best in Hamilton I’ve had but average in terms of Caribbean food I’ve had in my life at restaurants in canada specifically between Toronto and Hamilton. One more thing the portions and price was very good and in all honesty I would love to give this place a 7 out of ten instead of 6 but googles score system won’t allow me to.

  • Chelsea Davies

My husband and I ordered from here for the first time in a few months and we both noticed right away that it wasn’t the same. I used to love the coleslaw, but there was just something off about it this time. It lacked flavour and creaminess. The pieces of chicken were smaller, dry, bland, and the price point was higher than it used to be. Came here to read the reviews to see if anyone else had noticed a change. After reading other reviews, I see that there are new owners. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be ordering from here again. Over $30 for subpar food... I hope the quality can improve to where it used to be.

  • Elle Daps

Love this place!!! The salad and chicken is homemade but this is half of my curry goat roti!!!! HALF! The portion sizes are huge and very much worth the money! The seasonings are so fresh and vibrant- the goat is exploding with flavor! The roti is not like those thick and dry ones; it's just the right thickness to hold the filling! Today we ordered 5 for my family and everyone was licking their fingers! Best roti in Hamilton hands down! The wait was a little long- but during Covid, that is to be expected. But on the bright side, now I have lunch for tomorrow too (the other half)

  • Radhika

Went with some friends recently and ordered the jerk chicken and chicken curry combo. The rice was flavourful, the chicken was tender and juicy. Not enough words to describe how amazing the food was. Even the coleslaw with the rice... Chefs kiss. We also got a fresh beef patty, and even as I type this my mouth is watering. It was spicy with a hint of sweetness. The first beef patty I've tried that I LOVE. I can't wait to come back. I'm so happy this spot exists in Hamilton. True authentic caribbean food.

I am a cancer patient at Juraviski Hospital & was asking the nurses if there was a place to get a good roti. I love roti’s even though my stomach can’t take much these days. I ordered from the hospital & would pick it up on the way back to the hotel. I was not disappointed in any way as the roti was magnificent! Some would say the price of $14 was high, not me! The roti was big enough in my opinion to feed 2/4 people, and there was lots of chicken & potato. I’m going to our real home in Mississauga today, but for sure I’ll be ordering another roti when I go back to Hamilton!

As a hamilton born and raised white boy, this gotta be the best damn roti I ever tried. She makes the bread (wrap? Whatever it’s called) fresh to order. If you were searching for the real deal Caribbean in Hamilton this place is it! I wouldn't say the service is great but the roti, oxtail and jerk chicken makes up for the sometimes apathetic attitudes of the owners. Actually in my experience the ladies here are very nice but have a dry sense of humour that seems to rub some people the wrong way. The food speaks for itself, best restaurant of it's kind in the city.

  • Mohit S

Expensive for a Roti!!!. $14 bucks with taxes for a Roti I had. The taste was good and portion was good but the price was double too. I had Roti elsewhere too which cost me $8 bucks but I can't justify spending 6 dollars more here. The taste was pretty much same I have tried elsewhere. Though I love the service and it was clean inside. One less star just for the high price else everything else was great.

Food was hot fresh and delicious. Tasted like home. Good portions so it justifies the price. Service was friendly enough. The goat roti was great. The chicken roti was great. The special fried rice was ok. Nothing to write home about. It was homey but I was hoping for the traditional back home fried rice. Was a Bit heavy on the sesame oil n light on the frying. Would recommend and will return!

I ordered two large chicken dinners. Got home and saw that the chicken was thoroughly dried out and inedible. If you picture leaving cooked chicken under a heat lamp for 48 hours, that's exactly what I received. Really disappointing because it's so close to my home and it's available late night. I won't be back.

Unbelievably delicious haven't had Order of doubles in a long time and that was amazing. Not only did they have some of my favorite Caribbean dishes the lady at the front that helped me was A sweetheart. I will definitely be returning.

The portions are fantastic and thats about it, must be new owners because the flavor has become kind of blah. Ordered 2 chicken curry roti and it was saugy and flavorless, too much liquid, hopefully this past visit was a one off. Will probably try again 1 more time and if they haven't improved we will have to find a new place for our curried roti.

Portion size and rice were great, but the oxtail wasn’t the best and the plantain was rotten. The Jamaican patties are not made by them. Jerk chicken was a large portion and was very spicy and flavourful. It's a good idea to get a large macaroni salad on the side to balance out the spice. Tried to call to order for pick-up but there was no answer, so went to the restaurant to order instead. Waited 15 minutes and glad I did. Highly recommend if you like your jerk chicken extra spicy.

Guyanese myself I ordered Goat Curry with a side of roti and WOW!!! Super tender boneless goat with potatoes. It was delicious. Reminds me of my aunties cooking. For sure our new comfort spot. Portions size were huge! I can share the roti with my husband and have some.goat curry left for the next day to eat with some rice. More

Best Caribbean food hands down. We had the jerk chicken rice and the chicken stew. It was so delicious.I’m usually very picky with trying new restaurants and this place was just amazing. Customer service was absolutely great. Overall, 5 stars isn’t even enough for this place.

I ordered oxtail and coleslaw. I went to this restaurant for 3 years when it with the former owner and change to the new owner. I was really enjoy this meal and I have to say that the new owner did a very good job to upgrade everything. Definitely highly recommend!

Heard about Caribbean Canadian from TasteHamOnt on Instagram. Went in and someone who had been a long time customer recommended the chicken or goat curry. I got the chicken roti. Loved it. The number of people who walked in at 5 on a Saturday all familiar with the place was very encouraging. Did not disappoint.

  • Kiera K (Kiera)

I ordered the ox tail dish and it was delicious. It comes with ox tails, a plantain and rice. The have other dishes, so i'll definitely come back to try those. They offer dine in or takeout, but the place is more like a takeout business. If you are doing takeout then I highly recommend calling ahead of time.

This has to be the best ever 2 stewed chicken, and goat dinner my wife & I & our friend have ever had any where, also so much better than the previous owners made, keep it up. Please everyone try it & you will be pleasently rewarded.

Although under new ownership, the food was still great. If I am being honest, it’s not 100% as amazing as it was, but it’s still the best goat roti around. Super friendly and will definitely keep eating there.

We did not buy for a while and we did today but the standard of food has fallen off considerably. They were one of the better Caribbean spots in Hamilton but not anymore very disappointed for sure not sure if I will be back.

The jerk chicken here is absolutely delicious. This is the closest to a home cooked meal you can get and their quality never dissapoints me. I highly reccomend this Carribean place for some hearty food. The portion sizes are also massive, so you will never leave hungry!

  • Jerome Lazatin

Tried their Jerk Chicken today and it was amazing! They are very generous in their serving size and the chicken was a flavorful delight. The food was perfectly cooked and was very delicious. A concession gem 10/10!

Best Caribbean food I've ever had - hands down! The doubles were out of this world! The goat curry was delicious as well. Also, restaurant provides excellent service. Note: They only accept cash and/or debit, so make sure to bring either of those before going here :)

Been coming here for a long while, didn’t know there was new owners, until I tasted the food, something was amiss, now I see. Nowhere near as good, they’ve went from great to mediocre at best. Very unfortunate.

I really want to give this place a 5/5 because the food is amazing, but they are unbelievably slow and when you call them, it almost always goes straight into voicemail. I have never gotten my food in time even despite placing my order at

Amazing oxtail stew. The rice and beans are so good. Portion size was huge, had it over 2 meals. Accidentally dropped my friends goat curry and the staff helped make a new one, no charge. Also super helpful when asking for recommendations.

Got the chickpea roti and it was so good. Huge and tones of chickpeas and potatoes for 10$ including tax. Roti was Trinidadian style and well made. Haven't got the chance to try the doubles, but will come back on a weekend to try some.

  • Droxzy

first time there got the oxtail, and it was amazing. If i lived in Hamilton, i would eat here 5 times a week. Great service, too

I have been going here for many years. 1st time with new owners and it's lacking the wonderful curry flavor the past owner had. My daughter and I agreed, it's rather tasteless. It looks the same, but no flavor. Disappointing.

I had a chickpea roti and my girl had the stew chicken and we both really enjoyed our meals! Might be the best roti I’ve had in YEARS. Also, my serving was soo big that I kept the other half for dinner …

  • Andre Miron

Food isn't the best anymore. The doubles is an absolute joke they use the premade phlourie mix they sell at food basics and it becomes hard. The stew chicken is also missing it's flavour.

  • Beatriz Jimenez

Awesome shrimp roti and service. I order her almost every Friday ever since I found them. The roti is very large and affordable. Wonderful choice for a short budget meal. More
