A very unique museum/gallery, and a good drawcard for the southernmost Aussie state TAS (although the state is definitely not in shortage of sights and wonders to see and explore). I went on a Friday and found a good crowd traveling via ferry. I rode the Mona Roma 2 as a plebe -- couldn't really find it in my heart to pay $60 to be a poshie on top of the $35 museum fee and I guess my ego is a bit deflated too :D Sat my bum down on a sheep and chugged a schooner of their own beer brew on board and got treated to good outdoor views and air of the River Derwent. Descending the building via the staircase/lift kind of feels like going into Dante's 9 levels of inferno but this one only goes down to Basement 3 :D Some of the artworks are laughable and can be at times a little trying-too-hard to transcend visuals. But the building's architecture is definitely a sight to behold. I kind of think the owner built the building and then used his crazy art collection to decorate the interiors to highlight the space and not the other way around. I advise you take a good look at the various furniture in this museum -- some are insanely gorgeous and totally classy and in itself worthy exhibits to see :D the building is otherworldly and the grounds well landscaped. I couldn't say much about the food as my visit was 12PM and I was already pretty stuffed before I even boarded the ferry to the museum. Can't say much about the art, some are okay. I'm not too much shocked though with the vulgar ones, I've seen worse artworks in other museums. To each their own. But 4/5 because THE BUILDING itself is enough to get the good stars rating. Spent 3 hours at the gallery! So so much to look at. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful - best customer service we have seen in a long time. One of the staff was kind enough to offer us some water when they heard we mentioned being thirsty. All staff were welcoming and happy. Had the most amazing cake at the bar on the base level, lovely tea/coffee. A range of different art areas that can suit everyone’s tastes. I was very impressed with the modernness of the gallery, you download their app with the map and ability to read about every single artwork. As someone who appreciates knowing the meanings behind artwork - it was wonderful to have access to that. The way the gallery is laid out is effective in immersion into each section. Much if the art really makes you think and ponder. There are adult only areas, beware of entering those spaces as some of the artwork is graphic and not for everybody. My advice is to be selective with what you view, if you don’t like it - walk away. Each person has different preferences. Stunning architecture. Pieces of note were displays of the human form and also the spider webs. We enjoyed viewing those. But there is so much it is hard to define everything!! Absolutely enjoyable experience. Thank you so much! Only shame is the opening hours being on certain days. However, with the size of the location and sheer amount of staff needed - it makes sense they may not be cater to all days or the week.

They say Art doesn't need to make sense. But we, a Group of 7, including 3 young 20 somethings, walked out of here, feeling as though we paid for some sort of Smut show. We are far from Prudes. Actually pretty open minded. But would not recommended this 'Art Show'. Some of the peices were absolutely incredible. The huge art wall with a hidden snake. The mirrored man, the Ancient artefacts. The working Brain. But there absolutely needs to be better signage, for the explicit content. It's just mixed in with most of the subtle peices. It started off quiet harmless, but I'm sorry, some of the, apparent, Art is nothing more than, se*ually explicit morbid atrocities. Some very questionable pictures of a very young looking girl. And since when was Bea*tiality, Art? It should not be considered Art or Normalised. You can say it's Art. But I'm sorry, it's Not. It's perverse. If it was marketed as 'Adults Only' then fine. But we saw a young girl wondering around, with her parents, who looked very uncomfortable. We were shocked, I can only imagine the thoughts going through some of the kids minds. The building itself it nothing short of Incredible. Staff behind the Void Bar, were very below par with their Customer service skills. Though the young man who brought out our coffee was lovely. With all the hype behind MONA, I would NOT recommend it. Save your money and maybe support a small local Cafe or Market Stall instead.

This is the greatest modern art museum in the world, bar none. Beautifully set underground with natural rock formations all around you. Unlike most museums, art work is not separated by era, you will see ancient tablets next to digital art. This continuity really inspires and connects like no other collection I’ve seen. The design of the space is also impeccable and human centered. Comfortable chairs and couches all around that seem like they could be part of an exhibit, but purposefully set aside for you relaxation and enjoyment. Tactfully placed mirrors behind the works and use of dim lighting makes it clear that the visitors are themselves part of the art. That being said, the museum is not pretentious in the slightest; quite the contrary, their sarcastic and self deprecating style makes the space more inclusive and is quite endearing and entertaining. This reflects in the up/down rating system and digital comments people leave on each art piece. Honestly hard for me to find fault in this place; the outside is not neglected, and the cocktail bar within the museum would be worth a visit as a stand-alone bar. Can’t wait to return. I highly recommend taking the museum’s ferry from Hobart too, this is absolutely part of the experience. Definitely plan at least a half day.

Yet another example of 'modern art', where untalented 'artists' do the bare minimum and rely shock to evoke anything other than indifference. This museum tried to hard. Initially I walked in with an open mind, having no idea what to expect and within 5 minutes I was bored and indifferent to everything I saw. They tried too hard to appear 'weird' or 'bizarre' that everything just ended up feeling vapid and devoid of creativity. There were also a lot of people and staff acting like this was the most incredible thing they've experienced. At one stage I saw a line of people and expecting to see something unique and interesting I line up too, waiting 20 minutes in line, while a gear/chainsaw made extremely loud and repetitive noises that ended up giving me a headache. Eventually, when I neared the end of the line, I asked the lady who as attending to this exhibit what I should expect, prompting her to just smile cryptically and say, 'It's an experience.' Somewhat perplexed, I went through and it just turned out to be still water, that smelled like sulphur, being held back by a glass barrier at around waist level. That sure was an 'experience' and a reflection of the 'art' you can expect to behold in the Mona Museum.

Two of us visited MONA on a Saturday morning whilst travelling around Hobart. We had heard a lot about the museum so we were keen to check it out. The museum offers a range of abstract art, mostly open to the viewer’s interpretation. A modern twist on this museum is the absence of labels with descriptions. Instead, we were advised to download an app to electronically learn about each display. Many of the rooms and exhibits were very dark and had very little light, so be aware of this if visiting with children, elderly or disabled people, as I think it could pose a risk and increase their chance of injury. Nevertheless, MONA offers a unique range of exhibits that utilise water, colours, lasers, spider webs, mirrors, sculptures, statues, music, screens, sounds and so forth. I can only conclude that everyone who has contributed to this museum possesses extremely creative minds. Beyond the artwork and exhibits, MONA also offers bars that sell alcohol, a DJ with live music, a library, and a recording studio. Although MONA may not be for everyone, it was definitely an exciting and unique place to visit. Thank you for the enjoyable experience!

Honestly very disappointed. The best part was the view of the river from outside. You have to down load the app & have internet to access-the bottom level is 3 floors under ground-no service & no im not with optus-to get any info about any of the displace pieces. Lots of experiences that you had to register for on the app. A lot of sections were in the dark-dosnt help if you have vision problems-i don't by the way. The displays were too chaotic-offensive naked people opposite an Egyptian mummy?? I couldn't handle the chaos. Some pieces were fabulous-but they were too few & far between for me. We were done in 2 hours. I wouldn't take children of a certain age bracket-they would be either traumatised or be exposed to things they shouldn't be-even outside the adult content section which to be honest there wasn't much distinction between. They are gonna love this review though

The best part about MONA is the outdoor area where the band was playing and you can sit in the bean bags and chill on lawn, or huddle around the fire pit. There is also a great playground for the kids. It's a shame the art gallery itself was the let down. While initially it was fun to wander around and discover the place eventually this became frustrating as the signage leaves a lot to be desired and the internal layout of the museum itself seemed very unintuitive. Any one claustrophobic should think twice, and while I'm sure they are prone to change the exhibits didn't feel kid friendly. A final point, while the O app had some good information I feel like an art gallery is a place to get away from screens and I had to keep getting my phone out to read about the exhibits, even a short by line nearby for each exhibit would have been good.

I loved MONA so much. Weirdest pieces of art, but honestly so riveting and highly relevant to our day and age. The location itself is beautiful, it's situated right next to the water. The architecture of the museum alone is worth paying a visit to see. I particularly liked the MONA app - it has some quality information about the art pieces and it specifically shows you what exhibits you are standing near so that you can read up on them. Great way to give prominence to the artists and their interpretation. The MONA cafe had the most expensive but delicious cheese toasty I've had in my life - can't stop thinking about it. All in all, very thought-provoking and whether or not you are able to appreciate the art, you will definitely admire the architecture and scenery. Take your sense of humour and an open mind, and this will make for a great experience.

This place was described to me as amazing and fantastic as well as terrible. Since I’m not likely to get back to Tasmania any time soon, I opted to check it out. The Story behind the creation of the museum holds as much interest as the place itself. The art. Installations were not appealing to me, with the exception of the light prisms room (outside the area that requires a ticket) and the Richard Wilson’s piece that is constructed of used sump oil and steel. I struggled to appreciate the large wall of dead flies and resin as art. Watching the expressions of visitors was more interesting. I understand from locals that the installations change regularly. The locals do not pay an entry fee so it is easy to get value for a visit. For me, the hype far overshadowed the value. The art was not to my liking.

Yawn. Really …. Not shocked but saddened that no effort into signage, assistance, advice or care to encourage your visit. After 20 mins of trying to figure out the app, walking through dark enclosed areas and not understanding the thread of what was going on…. I realized I’m of an age where being a yuppie has surpassed me. Very ‘cool’ for the wannabes drinking wine at 10.30am. There were about 4 cleverly designed pieces - insides of a brain, water words dropping, fat Porsche, and a fun montage to Madonna. My teenagers wanted to leave also. We were there 50 minutes. Wish you had encouraged me to stay but sadly there was no s&$ts given after you took my money. I’ve been to many more fascinating and inspiring modern museums. The building was better than the art.

Me and my partner were recommended here so much, and so we decided we should see how great it really was. The day we went, it was pouring down, and sadly, we didn't have an umbrella. We stood in the rain for a bit before we were able to get in. The ferry ride was quick and easy, and they were lenient on changing the time of your return ferry. The art was pretty cool, some cooler than others, while some were quite simple and not that amazing. I did enjoy a lot of the art and it was definitely different to a lot of other art museums that I've been to. My favourite was definitely the volcano experience, very relaxing and soothing. Definitely should go at least once as it was a really cool experience.

I loved this gallery so much! Alot to interact, inside and out, and even more to immerse yourself in and gain new experience and you can get sooo close to the art works! I will absolutely be going back and dining there, the restaurants looks amazing! There are sections that are heavy adult content, so be sure to avoid these areas with kids if you don't want them seeing the human body in its raw form, but the art work is stunningly beautiful. If you have never been before and unsure where to go, walk up the main entry and when you see the tennis court, head that way. The main entry is through the mirrored doors. Beautiful grounds and its wonderful fun for big and little kids alike.

Definitely something different! This museum is architecturally amazing, one of the finest in the world. If you're trying to do it on the cheap, you can honestly just walk around outside and get some of the best bits! Inside, many of the artworks are stunning and outside of the box. However, our family found it frustrating that you need to use the app to discover any information about the art. As you can imagine, with kids, walking to to art, funding it on a device and huddling around to all read it isn't the most enjoyable. The outside area is delightful. Playground and cafe with fantastic views. ️ Entry is free for Tasmanians, $35 for everyone else. Free lockers. ⛴️ The Mona ferry adds to the experience! Sit on a sheep!

Genuinely so deeply disappointed I paid to walk around a cashed up sadomasochists happy place. There were some significant historic pieces and genuinely good/interesting art, but the lack of didactics made everything contextual-less within a space that demanded you consider the “deeper meaning”. Also please be careful taking children here. I’m not a prude but there were “adult” animal-human interactions in some of the art. I wouldn’t bother going, nor would I recommend it. Just go to any other art gallery that’s free. It’s also terribly signed which is probably part of the whole “experience” but it’s frustrating rather than evocative or profound in any sense.

The Mona Art Museum in Hobart is a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts. The museum offers an impressive display of installation and performance arts that will leave you in awe. WiFi enables you to get an in depth description on every piece of art on display. There is also a food and beverage outlet outside on top of the museum. Beverages can be purchased inside but can only be consumed in the bar area. No food or drink allowed inside the museum. Constant patrols keep an eye on everyone to ensure they dont touch or walk too close to any display. They are there to help guide and explain. Go with an open mind a nd enjoy.Loved it

Visiting MONA is an amazing experience! The whole setup would be good enough but the there is this creative architecture and so much good, wonderful art, engaging all senses, inspiring and delight. And there is also the landscaping, cortin steel elements are like artwork in their own right. And setting, ah the beautiful Tasmanian landscape. All employees are so nice and accomodating and lovely. On top of all that we stayed in one of the tree houses. I’m actually living through my dream. Wonderful.

What an absolute MUST do experience. The museum itself was phenomenal. So much to see. From ancient artefacts to modern adult only content to the spectacular architecture it’s a truly a place we will go back to many times. We did the wine tasting and the staff were so informative and the wine was fabulous. Don’t miss the library. They had recording equipment used to record almost all of the Beatles albums, Pink Floyd’s dark side of the moon and many more. The staff there were also incredibly friendly and helpful. Loved this experience. Highlight of the year for me.

Yes, the art installations are fabulous and thought-provoking as they should, but the star of the experience for me was the building. Amazing architecture that creates a dynamic space to provide such drama and atmosphere. In an ordinary building, the experience would not have been so rich. We spent time on the lawn eating, drinking, and listening to jazz in the winter sun. Fabulous. Next time, we will catch the ferry from Hobart and dine at their fabulous restaurants.

From the minute we arrived in the Delux catamaran & walked up the 99 steps we were transported into a surreal experience of world class art. Our family group were aware that some of works were not suitable for young children & the excellent O app gave us plenty of info on what to avoid. This is definitely a bucket list destination & we would love to visit again. Some of our group also enjoyed the wine tasting & we all loved the outdoor food & the garden with live music.

I took the ferry from Hobart, about a 30 minute trip there. Alcohol and food served on board. There is a VIP option offered with service to the seat and front view of the trip. What an awesome experience at the gallery, the outside garden is nice to sit and chill in also. Very cool experience. We left it later in the day but I think lunch time would be better to get it all in.

The museum is wildly overpriced if you're not a local and yet it's almost always over crowded. The art is fun, and definitely an unique experience for sure but it IS NOT KID FRIENDLY. Yes you can bring kids here, but that doesn't mean you should. Most of our day here my friends and I were dodging crying toddlers and inconsiderate parents with prams. It definitely ruined our experience. However, if you ignore the $35 entrance fee, the overcrowding and the large amounts of young children, it's a fun day out.

I was completely surprised by how eccentric and beautiful this place was. Modern art shares the stage with more classical art, in a place that can only be described as a piece of architectural genius, where the building is fused with the stone and flora of the estate. Highly recommend. Please do check out the more 'controversial' pieces as they are not as scandalous as some people like to advertise.

Wow. Everything about this place is fantastic. The architecture on its own is worth seeing. We had the best day. Make sure you allow plenty of time as on the weekends it can get a little busy and some wait times for smaller installations. The staff in all locations were helpful and friendly. We paid extra to do the ‘Event Horizon’ and it did not disappoint. The only section I found boring was the religious displays but that was only it is not to my taste.

The Mona Museum is an exhilarating and unconventional experience. While I initially expected a "normal" restaurant outing, it turned out to be far from it. The food was exceptional, the band's performance with various instruments, including kids toys, was thrilling, and the presence of the eccentric roaming lady added a delightful touch .

My first visit was incredible - an amazing experience with so many different spaces and exhibits. This was my second visit - disappointing, and I didn't like being stuck underground. One particular experience I didn't like at all, 10 rooms that were so dark, I couldn't see anything and was glad to finally get outside. One star for the ferry ride & architecture, another star for the staff, who are fun & passionate about their job, except one that is guarding the surrounding booster room on Monday 23/10 was pretty rude. Chai latte while waiting for ferry is good. Glad we are able to reschdule our ferry to head back Hobart earlier than scheduled. Overall, not my cup of tea and did not enjoy it.

The MONA (a deliberate nod to the 'Lisa'?), is a wonderful vertical labyrinth of discovery. It has everything from the venerable to the truly odd, from ancient traditional art to vast multimedia installations. All enclosed within a cavern which is an artwork in itself, MONA was a highlight of our visit to and compliments the beautiful city of Hobart.

Irreverent stunning art museum. Eclectic but idiosyncratic collection. Only warning - a significant amount of very "adult" art. But can be avoided (we did not, and loved it) and still worth a visit. Great restaurant - The Source - and nearby winery.

Due to time restrictions we couldn't enjoy the full experience and were restricted to visiting the grounds for a stroll and a coffee. It is a wonderful place to walk through and enjoy the art installations. Very hands on and a hive of activity for adults and children.

Well I did not stay in the hotel for it being private museum. It was pretty impressive when you take it all in. I highly recommend you take your time. It was a very interesting experience but in a very positive way. The service was amazing. The employees were very helpful. I will come back.

WOW, what an interesting place to visit. Some really amazing exhibits. We only visited for the day to check out the museum, and it was well worth it. I can certainly see why some view it as very controversial and confronting. It's great to see something different like this.

Have to a start a civil suit to see Picasso? I wonder if that's what Mary Wollstonecraft had in mind? Modern art that relies on fear and shock is so depressing, it was like walking through a 90's horror. Abysmal attempt at displaying the best of now. Cool titbits throughout though, love the history.

It is certainly a different type of art gallery. You had to use their app, which i found confusing. Grounds are loverly. I found it a little pretentious. Couldn't get take away. They got our order wrong food order wrong and really didn't care. Also, I only received half a cup of coffee

Waste of time, waste of space, hard to navigate, staff with bad attitude, $74 for 2 burgers and 1 chips with 2 drink lunch. Void bar didn’t serve food, despite saying they did. DJ music - was just pretending as speakers weren’t plugged in. He was just turning knobs and music on loop. VIP ferry was not no option for snacks available. Wouldn’t recommend it.

The building was impressive. Some of the art was ok. Most of it was average and not worth looking at. There were a few exhibits that would be difficult for people with sensory issues, like the tunnel with a loud recording playing that sounded like an MRI machine. Some if it was perverse, so, not art at all. Maybe don’t take your kids, or just go to the cafe and playground

More dark, gloomy, moody, and shock value art than an historic and cultural examples to really showcase the amazing art of Australian artists and it's culture. Just money thrown at as many crazy and shock value things. Pity had high hopes for this place. It also lacks Aboriginal sections.

Wow! What a beautiful place to visit. Really glad we had the opportunity to experience this incredible museum. The rooms are vibrant and interesting, such a vast array of pieces. Our teenage children enjoyed this as well so suitable for the whole family!

One of the most tastefully curated museums in Australia. Architecturally outstanding, the museum built into the hill is a must see for when you are in Hobart. Fast ferries operate from Hobart CBD so getting there is no issue. Overall it is a more mature museum but here and there are things for kids to do.

The whole cruise across and arts centre was an experience not to be missed . Some of the exhibits were challenging and makes you think about the meaning of the word Art. There is a fine line between Arts and tourism and this place teeters on the edge all the way.

We visited the Mona immediately after flying into Hobart. Such beautiful grounds, architecture, and ever expanding exhibits that are diverse and without the constraints of political correctness. A must visit everytime we visit Hobart and an icon for the state.

Had a blast at MONA in Hobart! The art is mind-blowing, and they somehow make it fun for kids too. The place itself is a masterpiece, and the riverside view is a bonus. Staff were cool and helpful. Go check it out if you're in Tassie!

Only go if you are BOTH drunk and childless. It isn't pram friendly, nor is it a fun place for kids. some of the art is cool but lots of it is just bold statements about how artists should find other jobs. My husband, the gentlest man ever, said "there is something fundamentally punchable about all of this"

Terrific art museum that definitely warrants a full day. Also suggest planning on doing all the additional 'art rides' and checking out the restaurants. It's all a lot of fun and worth the trip. Catching the ferry there (particularly with posh pit tickets) adds to the experience.

A very spacious art museum with a wide range of interesting art work in which some are interactive. They have a very big grass area where you can enjoy food and live music and a playground for the the kids to enjoy.

My wife and I must have missed something. Either that or we're just too old at 53. Building and surrounds are worth a look, but the contents is just plain weird. If seen outside of here you'd call it pornography, but in here it's modern art. Go figure. Disappointing.

A unique and unusual experience. Be sure to download their app. The ferry ride is smooth even in the rain. Don't be shy about taking the tunnel instead of the 99 stairs. There are a lot of ramps and stairs in the museum.

My partner and I can say we visited the MONA. That is the only positive thing I can say. There are some interesting pieces to be found but overall very uninspiring. I understand that art is subjective and each to their own but I have visited a lot of galleries in my life and this was the worst by far.

A must visit. Controversial and wacky but that's what it's supposed to be. Leave all your inhibitions and conservative views behind. Be immersed in the creative, silly, and absolutely weird art.

We stayed in a caravan park in Richmond. Very nice clean park. Amenities were very clean. The town is very beautiful, steeped in history with so many beautiful old buildings. Absolutely recommend a visit if you are into history.

Don't really understand art.... no offence, but i should have skipped this as we didn't have much time to explore hobart. you need to download their app to know what the art is. However, it does not provide much info in their app either (apart from who painted and what did they use). Lack signs.

Really enjoyed our visit here. A strange, unusual and wonderful place. It was fascinating. Loved the cloud room and the harp playing. Granted some of the art was just plain weird but at the end of the day, it was just something so different.

I’m glad I didn’t take my 6 year old son. A lot of the art is quite dark and creepy. It would genuinely give him nightmares! I had no idea it was going to be so eerie. I thought a few things were cool but I didn’t love the overall concept and definitely wouldn’t recommend taking kids inside.

WOW! what a place; it's definitely eye-opening. Must say I'm not a prude, but heads up if your children are at the age of asking for explanations of what they are seeing, you may be left trying to explain things you're not wanting to

The building architecture is amazing and is worth the entrance fee, thank god for that, as the so-called art leaves a lot to be desired. The building itself is art, the displays are far less than average. I recommend you have a look for the building, just ignore the so-called art.

Absolutely loved the place. Was a little disappointed by 1 exhibit, it was an oil display - was told to touch anything, but my arm accidentally brushed up as i turned and ended up covered in oil. Perhaps a little more warning of exactly what the substance is would be recommended!

This was the most unpleasant museum experience I’ve ever had. I’ve been to museums all over the world and never seen anything like that. I honestly prefer classical art, but don’t mind cool contemporary stuff. But this was just twisted and weird. Maybe someone enjoys it, not me.

So much weird stuff, but like lots of great art, it certainly pushed you out of your comfort zone. The structure is amazing along with many of the exhibits. Something that needs to be seen to be appreciated

Visited MONA with the kids 11, 7 & 7, was very interesting, kids enjoyed it, food rather expensive, around $170 for food and drinks for lunch for x2 adults and x3 children was probably the most we paid anywhere but luckily it was good, balances out i guess as entry was free....

This is something so extensive, beautiful, colorful, sometimes shocking that it's hard to even give a proper definition or description. Just come yourself and see why it's a must to visit while in Tasmania.

Amazing building that set into the sandstone bedrock which itself an experience alone. Absolute cant miss out on the sunset James Turell's Amarna art installation. Do recommend taking the ferry to MONA.

We caught the Mona Ferry so had a very picturesque trip to Mona which was beyond expectations. Loved the art work and various displays including the tasteful vagina wall. Need to leave plenty of time to enjoy the different displays and levels. Good cafe as well.

Super interesting museum. If you're looking for a traditional experience, you won't find it here. The art here is more than visual, engaging all the senses, keeping it an interesting and fun experience.
