Maracanã (Portuguese: Estádio do Maracanã, standard Brazilian Portuguese: [esˈtadʒi.u du maɾakɐˈnɐ̃], local pronunciation: [iʃˈtadʒu du mɐˌɾakɐˈnɐ̃]), officially named Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho (IPA: [iʃˈtadʒ(i)u ʒoʁnaˈliʃtɐ ˈmaɾi.u ˈfiʎu]), is a stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The stadium is part of a complex that includes an arena known by the name of Maracanãzinho, which means "The Little Maracanã" in Portuguese. Owned by the Rio de Janeiro state government, it is, as is the Maracanã neighborhood where it is located, named after the Rio Maracanã, a now canalized river in Rio de Janeiro. The stadium was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup, in which Brazil was beaten, 2–1, by Uruguay in the deciding game, in front of 199,854 spectators on 16 July 1950. The venue has seen attendances of 150,000 or more at 26 occasions, the last being on 29 May 1983, as 155,253 spectators watched Flamengo beat Santos, 3–0. The stadium has seen crowds of more than 100,000 284 times. But as terraced sections have been replaced with seats over time, and after the renovation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, its original capacity has been reduced to the current 78,838, but it remains the largest stadium in Brazil. The stadium is mainly used for football matches between the major football clubs in Rio de Janeiro, including Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, and Vasco da Gama. It has also hosted a number of concerts and other sporting events. The total attendance at the last (and indeed decisive game, but not a final) game of the 1950 World Cup was 199,854, making it the world's largest stadium by capacity when it was inaugurated. After its 2010–2013 renovation, the rebuilt stadium currently seats 78,838 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Brazil and the second in South America after Estadio Monumental in Peru.
Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is an iconic sports venue that captivates with its rich history and electrifying atmosphere. Stepping into this colossal stadium, you can't help but feel the weight of its legendary past. The sheer magnitude of the stadium is awe-inspiring, accommodating over 78,000 passionate fans. The vibrant energy pulsates through the stands, creating an unforgettable experience for spectators. The architectural grandeur and modern facilities ensure comfort and convenience for visitors. The stadium's pitch is immaculate, providing a perfect stage for thrilling football matches. The view from any seat is exceptional, allowing fans to fully immerse themselves in the action. Outside the stadium, the surrounding area is vibrant, offering a variety of food and beverage options. Whether you're a football enthusiast or simply seeking an extraordinary cultural experience, Maracanã Stadium is a must-visit destination. It encapsulates the essence of Brazilian football, leaving visitors with memories that will last a lifetime
Legendary stadium, how can I give less than 5 stars... On one day, we did the tour of the stadium on one day and also purchased tickets in person. To purchase online, one needs CPF, a Brazilian tax id of some sort. So we could only buy the tickets to the very next game only, passports and IDs in hand. Even for the kids. As far as the tour, I was not impressed because it was not a guided tour, quite a lot of people, and I am not a huge ⚽️ fan. The game. Wow. Atmosphere, security, organization --that I liked. The fans are physically separated in different sections, which was amazing for me. During the game, you are constantly approached by people selling ice cream, beer, cookies and popcorn. I can't say I liked that part, but I didn't mind because if kids want a treat, you do not have to leave the stands. Exiting the stadium after the game was fast, safe, taxis waiting. Overall, great experience
My wife and I took our toddler here and he loved it! The location is accessible for wheelchairs and the staff are extremely accommodating! There is very little information available online and what we learned was gate A was best for entry. I would not waste money on websites promising a tour or reselling tickets, just go to the location and walk through. Gate A! It was great seeing the history of futbol in Brasil! The field is beautiful and we hope in a future visit we get the chance to attend a game. Kid friendly, wheelchair accessible. Accessible tips: there are no accessible restrooms in the stadium tour access. They will redirect you to another entrance and unfortunately the doors are still locked. I would recommend insistent that a staff member walk with you to the external bathrooms.
Watching a Flamengo game at Maracanã is an experience that everyone who likes football should have. There is also the Maracanã Tour, which is closed due to the pandemic, as well as the public presence at the games is still suspended for the same reason. Maracanã is very well located, has a subway and train station, which leaves the visitor on the side, giving access via the UERJ ramp, whose descent leaves in front of the north and west wing, to get to the south and east it is necessary to walk in around him. You can get there by bus, car and Uber, but I don’t advise it on Flamengo game days, because the surroundings are closed and traffic is very bad, another difficulty is finding a parking space, everything is very crowded.
ENGLISH REVIEW: If you're a football/soccer fan, this is the place to be. The overall experience consists of four phases, the initial demonstration, the locker room, the field, stands and substitute bench and finally the press conference room. We were lucky to watch a FIFA World Cup match in one of the press rooms as well. Met a really nice guy there named Viktor who was one of the demonstrators.. Had a long discussion on football in Europe and Latam.. Will never forget this.. The enormous Maracana and the shirts of legends in the locker room.. Exquisite!!
An amazing football stadium, especially when you have the chance to watch Brazil play! We were fortunate enough to attend the Rio 2016 Olympic final between Brazil and Germany. Brazil won the match in a penalty shootout to win the gold medal. See my video of the winning goal! The Maracanã Stadium is very impressive and worth a visit for football fans. There were plenty of facilities including food & drink vendors and toilets. The atmosphere at the Maracanã is incredible and the Brazilian fans were very passionate and friendly.
The best sports experience. I've been in Maracanã once when I was 14 years old for a museum tour, and the experience of all gracious and energized history place it's so incredible. This time I went to see a live game in the stadium for the first time in my life and besides all excitement of the crowd rushing to get into the stadium the Flamengo fans are unbelievable intense cheering as no others from the beginning until the last ending second when they get back home. ️
I went there and back home by subway, door to door. Although this is one of the world’s biggest derbies, everything was smooth and safe. Boarding and exiting the subway was easy, well organised to the 70,000 people event. Policemen and policewomen all the way from subway to Maracanã entrance ensured safety. You need to be careful, not to carry nor exhibit expensive cel phones and big money, etc., but football fans from everywhere can go to Maracanã and enjoy a good match!
Beautiful and huge stadium. Near Maracana metrostation, so very easy to visit. Check in advance the dates to make sure it works, and not miss the visit! Employees very polite and nice, speak english, spanish and portuges. Recomend to pay 80 R$ for Maracana medal and 3 penalty shootouts! Amazing experience to shoot yhe penals on Maracana stadium. Otherwise, the medal itself cost 60R$. Definitely visit Maracana, no matter you love football or not, that's epic!
I did the Stadium tour and it was a nice experience, due to Covid the tour is a bit restricted to the main hall, pitch side view a bit of the stands and the away dressing room. I was a bit disappointed with the press room - found it quite small. The Stadium is amazing, massive and you can feel that football spirit alive on it. It's a good visit not a great, but if you are in Rio and enjoy football and have some spare time, I would recommend.
It’s an amazing stadium with lot of histories displayed. There are lot of Football histories explained with display of the winning post, boots, T-shirts and even foot prints displayed which clearly explains the history of football for Brazil . Also it was the 50th anniversary of the 1000th goal shot by the legendary player PELE. Great place to visit for a tourist..... it’s a football museum.
Amazing stadium! The enthusiasm in this place is contagious. Great family event. For tourist, this is super safe because there is security and police all over the place and everyone is searched prior entry into the stadium. If you are a soccer lover, coming to this place will do you justice. What blew my mind is that for the whole 90 minutes, no one sat down. Just an amazing experience overall
The best experience on visiting a stadium. Especially when you are in the most iconic stadium in the world. The tour is great, especially because you can visit the play field , take photos on the bench and feel the real sensation of the pitch. You can find tshirts of the greatest players of Brasil and the foot impressions on concrete. Definitely a must visit site while in Rio de Janeiro!
Great way to experience Brazilian football and take in the history of Maracana. The museum and tour of the locker room and fields were a lot of fun. Booking tickets was a little bit of a challenge since you needed to pay in cash and have passports for each ticket. The cashiers only spoke Portuguese but there were plenty of friendly fans to help get tickets for that nights game.
Heaven for football fans! Buy tickets online and skip the line if you can, otherwise line up isn't too bad. Tour is very basic in English, Spanish and Portuguese but enough. First you see the museum, then changing area, then the field. Inexpensive and worth the visit. 66 Real (~16CAD) for entry. Cool to see everyone in their football shirts from around the world.
Incredible experience. Watched flamengo vs Sao Paolo, 3 - 1 to the home side. Great atmosphere, seating area, nobody sat by the way, only at half time. Friendly staff. Well secured. Friendly spirits. Didn't buy beer, looked v expensive and it'll be thrown in your hair anyway. The popcorn was great though. Any seating area would do tbh, the field feels close.
Fantastic Stadium! Felt lucky to have had the opportunity to visit such an iconic stadium and would definitely recommend it to the football fans. One of the must see attractions in Rio de Janeiro. The display and tribute to “Pele” was outstanding. Wasn’t lucky enough to attend a football match but it will be my first thing to do when I come back to Rio.

This is something you should stop and see in Brazil. The soccer stadium. Soccer is huge in Brazil. The stadium was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup. Attendance of 173,850 spectators was at that game. The venue has seen attendances of 150,000 or more on 26 occasions and has seen crowds of more than 100,000 284 times. That’s nuts.
Was cool getting to check out the actual stadium. They have a fun activity where you can shoot a goal in the stadium too. Has some volleyball stuff from 2016 Rio Olympics as well. Definitely recommend you take some time to visit if you’re around. Buy tickets online ahead of time. You can save yourself 1 part of the line.
When Flamengo is playing a top-notch opponent, the vibe and energy here is on super-drive! Highly recommend taking in a game, whether you're a soccer fan or not. A sunny day here with 60,000 rabid fans is something to behold. The stadium used to hold 100,000, so it's actually quite spacious for moving around.
Epic stadium, the noise from the fans is spectacular. Legendary place. Bear in mind that, at least in the north, east and south stands, once the people stand up at the beginning of the game, they never sit back down. So if the stadium is pretty full that means standing the whole game or go sit high up.
The stadium is neat and specious. Wide setup for big crowds, and the seats have enough leg space even for tall people. We went to a Fluminense game which was nicely organized. During the game, the stadium was surrounded by a lot of police and other shady characters, make sure to watch your belongings.
If you are a soccer fan you definitely have to go and check out this stadium. Walk around, sit at the bench where all the greatest football players have been sat and see in front of your eyes the history of the Brazil football soccer. And don't miss the delicious fast food at the end of the tour;)
Once the biggest stadium in Latin American now boasts having a true fan experience allied with convenient services and enough comfort. As a Flamengo fan, the best spot is the northern seat entrance E, F.

A great place to view the Brazilian Football history and get into a real stadium with access to players dressing room and dugouts. Apparently it is one of the world’s largest football stadium. If you are taking an Uber to this place, then please ensure that you put the museum address.
We were able to experience watching a soccer game, the right way. football is a game of passion. Although, we didn't understand portagese, but it was a wonderful experience hearing all those soccer chanting from the hard-core fans. Definitely recommended watching a game while in Rio.
An amazing stadium. We had the chance of watching the Corinthians play another team. The stadium is big comfortable, and we watched the game at sunset so the lighting was spectacular. I highly recommend going, the audience has a bunch of chants that they sing and it’s quite amazing.
If you get the chance go!!! Super family friendly or not if you're like me and like a beer people are selling ice cold beers in the stands no need to walk anywhere. I would say to get in early as you don't get a seat number you can go where you like which is great. …
After all the time, money and effort spent to update the Maracanã it still smells like piss... Some improvements were made, especially on the seating area. Safety was OK however the lack of concessions and hawkers made the whole experience dissapointing.
What a rush! If you are a tourist definitely go to a game with a local. The fan section was bonkers and incredibly fun. We saw Fluminense absolutely crush another team and we didnt sit the entire game. Great atmosphere, great party, and a great stadium.
History was made in this stadium. Soccer fan or not, Maracanã is one of the most famous landmarks in Rio de Janeiro. For only a few BRL you can take the self-guided tour through the locker rooms, press room, and of course the sitting area too!
If we are already in Rio, then part of the experience is to see a Brazilian football game... don't give up, you can buy cheap tickets at the box office, beware of peddlers outside the field who want to sell you a ticket at an expensive price.
The stadium has been totally renovated since the last time I was here. It looks really amazing and with a seating capacity of almost 80,000 is one of the largest there is... Worth going 5o see a match here as the atmosphere is electric!
Awesome experience you get to visit the dressing rooms, the field and some other cool locations if you go in uber remember you should go to the main stadium exit for the uber to stop if you arent there they wont stop in that location
This is a great location to jog/walk/skate or just even visit as a tourist. The stadium is downright beautiful. Take you time visiting the lockers and display sections. Jerseys of legends are kept on display in the locker areas for
Due to its history, this stadium is ripe to visit. It's an experience to be there. Not enough has been done for visitors to see like in other world stadiums, bad and little. But the very feeling of being at the Maracana... priceless
What a great experience visiting Rio de Janeiro and Brazil plays against Argentina. Unfortunately Brazil lost 1-0 with some clashes between Argentinian fans and the police but the staff were welcoming, well organized for 68K fans.
It was like a religious procession; walking in the crowd, into the stadium to see the Fluminense vs Cuiaba match Unforgettable experience attending the game. Safe; with lot of police around. Could be neater, around the stadium.
Incredible stadium with awesome atmosphere. You aren’t allowed in with professional camera equipment so be careful what you bring. Quite intense experience and chanting the whole match long. It was a hugely fun experience!
Impressive stadium. I can imagine the sensation of great personages had when playing there. On the other hand I can imagine the sadness of the players when Brazil lost the world cup to Uruguay in the same stadium in 1930.
Choose a day of a Flamengo match and go have one of the most amazing experience you will ever have. No other fans support a soccer team as the Flamengo's fans. This Mistic place is a must go if you are in Rio de Janeiro.
If you are in Rio de Janeiro you should visit this. Please take museum tour. You can see shoes, jerseys and other belongings of all famous football players. When you will take tour ticket then only you can enter stadium.
Flippin' wonderful! Easy to get to by metro. Signing outside isn't the best, but there are plenty of stewards that can help. You can drink in the concourse and whilst watching the game, which is novel for a British fan.
A experience unlike any other. From USA, I love attending sporting events. Seeing a game in Maracanã is an absolute must if you enjoy live sports! The atmosphere was electrifying from when we walked in to the finish
Any Brazil futebol/soccer fan should check it out. I would have rather gone to a game, but there was no games until after we left. And this way you get to see the locker room and press room. And sit on the bench.
Iconic stadium worth a visit 100%. I’ve been to a Flamengo match (v. Vasco) and the atmosphere was fantastic. And I’ve been to many stadiums so far - Westfalenstadion in Dortmund just to mention one of the best.
Incredible! I've never been with a crowd like this: singing and chanting the whole time, from 60 minutes before kickoff until the game ended. Fun and inviting fans that welcomed us right into their experience.
Nice place to see. Unfortunately guide is not following the group and a lot of interesting facts can be missed. From outside place looks not so good. Entrance is at the gate no. 1. Price for adult 60 Reals.
Impressive stadium, one of Rio de Janeiro main attractions, the feeling of being at field level is amazing

I hate football but decided to see the stadium. It was Vasco game and the experience was great. Even pre-game, on the streets. Highly recommended to visit the stadium during an actual game.
Amazing stadium with an unique atmosphere. I loved how football unites people and how everyone loves the game in such an intense form in this country. Couldn't ask for a better experience!
Wonderful historic stadium to watch football (soccer) and get some idea of how important it is to Brazilians! The crowd can be rowdy but mostly confine themselves to singing songs. The
Amazing place to visit and would love to have been there while there was a match on. But was equally as happy to walk around the place during the day and have full access to the stadium
Maracana is full of history..all Brazilian soccer fans should visit..Good display of accesories used in the old days. It is full of great energy !!! Excellent …
30 min visit ,recomended for who loves the football and the life of famous football player, You enter first for an exposition ,see the t shirts of the old football players,
Amazing experience to see a Libertadores Cup game at this stadium. If you decide to go by subway, watch for rush hour traffic and plan to be there very early.
Definitely I would recommend to anyone who is visiting Rio. We have parked at the gate number 2. It was quite hard to find but you will make it! We loved it!
Nice experience, I was there on Sunday and it was very easy to get in. The complete visit takes approximately 1.5 hours and there are some restaurants also
Even though I did not enter to the stadium I could see it from the outside and as well I took some pictures with my camera from Corcovado place
Great stadium to watch club or international football. Very passionate fans and home to Fluminese FC. Recommend buying tickets in advance.
Is always a great experience to stand where some of the greatest athletes have stood. A very positive vibe can be felt.
Iconic, can drink beer in the stands and cheap! Atmosphere was electric for Flamengo and rowdy for Brazil Vs Argentina.
A must for any self respecting football fan, amazing experience.

We didn’t plan to go to a game in advance. There just happened to be a game the weekend we were in Rio. …
A really interesting tour. The seats on the field are super comfortable. There are foot prints of players!!!
Awesome architecture. Would love to see a match here but great to see the national stadium form the outside.
I went to Maracana for my first Football match. It is a life time experience to watch a match there.
A pricey tour for the features they offer but it was a nice experience to meet this famous stadium!
The stadium is huge, football is a big thing here. its a great experience if you are visiting Rio.
We enjoyed the tour...there's a lot of sports history here and it was cool to see the stadium
Watched Brazil vs Argentina at this stadium. Absolutely incredible experience!
