WORST EVER I'll start with the only positive, The draught Kingfisher was fine, however my wife's first glass of wine was nasty (her second was better). With hindsight alarm bells should have rung with The Masala Grill being the only Indian restaurant in Havering that takes the Tastecard on a Saturday night.(I wonder if the use of said card contributed to the appalling quality of our meal?) Nevertheless we had all been working all day and just wanted to grab something to eat, surely can't be that bad, how wrong I was! The papadum were clearly cooked sometime earlier..not that crisp and not warm. The mango chutney was none of the sort, just a syrup (blended to within an inch of its life to make it go further). Two of us ordered Chicken tikka biriani, the chicken pieces, when we found them, were no bigger than a five pence piece, were hard and tasteless, definitely not freshly cooked.(Recycled?). Vegetable curry... tasteless (although it was as requested madras hot). My wife chose Karahi Chicken, served lukewarm on a skillet,( the waiter didn't have to warn us about the skillet being hot...it wasn't). She commented it was just Chicken casserole! But worst was my son's(he's 19 and insisted I didn't "make a fuss") Lamb tikka masala. The meat was absolutely appalling he couldn't even cut through it much less chew it, it made him physically gag! He was certain that it wasn't tikka. Oh and the Bindi was without doubt from frozen ... mushy. Despite my son's protestations I would have said something during the meal but no one asked how it was until the end. Which was when I let rip! If the excuse for an owner does attempt to reply I've no doubt he will say that we ate most all of it, well yes, we were there,we were hungry and with the exception of my son's was not inedible, just bland, very poor quality and badly cooked. I have eaten Indian food literally all over the world, with many 'interpretations'. I can honestly say this was absolutely THE WORST I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. I own a local business and be sure that 'word' will be put around as well as posted on all social media.
Considering the generally poor selection of restaurants (and Indian food in particular) around Upminster, the food at the Masala Grill is OK. From what I could see on our table (consisting of both carnivores and herbivores), the food appeared to be reasonably well made and pleasingly free of e-numbers that are all too often used in so called Indian restaurants, to produce garish sauces that could easily double as glow-in the dark paint! However, the lack of effort with regard to vegetarian offerings on the menu was disappointing (especially for an Indian restaurant) and many items are over-priced. For example, charging just under £10 for a lack lustre, less than generous portion of karahi paneer, where you had to go fishing for the paltry slivers of paneer was really rather a cheek. To add insult to injury, the equivalent meat / chicken karahi's were actually cheaper! Service wise, there is also room for improvement. Firstly, the manager / supervisor seemed genuinely peeved that we did not want to order any alcoholic drinks and that we had simply requested a jug of water - something that (contrary to popular belief in the UK) is actually quite a normal thing to have with an Indian meal! The breakdown in communication between this gentleman and the waiting staff also meant that (despite repeated reminders) I was left sitting there waiting for an extra naan that I had ordered, whilst the others on my table had finished and were having their plates cleared away! By the time my request actually reached the kitchen I was more than a little peeved and had lost my appetite and ended up having to get the longed for naan and now cold paneer curry packed. There was no attempt at an apology or even an acknowledgement that a mistake had been made. Maybe it would have been different if we had been sitting there guzzling pints of beer or over-priced bottles of wine. So, anyway, to conclude, the food was edible, with some dishes even being pleasant, but the overall experience (and bill) could have been better.
Out of the four or five restaurants on this road, this is the only one with five star hygiene rating. The waiter wasn’t particularly friendly when we entered the restaurant, we hadn’t booked so maybe he wasn’t expecting four adults plus two kids to turn up on a Sunday evening. The second waiter whom was a young lad, seated us and within five minutes asked us what we wanted to drink. No menus were handed to us until this point. I mentioned that I’d be using my gourmet society card and the other waiter shouted across that it would only be for four people. The kingfisher was on tap and it was decent. When we ordered food the waiter stated that anything with an star would be part of the deal. I asked him if the mixed grill would be served with a naan bread and he said it wasn’t part of the deal to which I replied I wasn’t asking about a deal, I just want to know if the mixed grill comes with a naan bread as other restaurants offer this. We ordered chicken madras, methi lamb, mixed grill. Three naans and a keema naan. The kids had nugget and chips. The mixed grill was really tasty and also fresh the chicken was succulent and seasoned just right. There were two pieces of lamb chops a kebab and chicken tikka which all tasted really good. The chicken madras was nice and spicy which we all enjoyed. The methi lamb may have had a little too much haldi but it was still tasty. The naans were nice and the keema naan was very good. I have been to other Indian restaurants in the area and this place could be my new favourite as we will be returning.
I’ve been to the Masala Grill a few times and it’s one of those hit or miss places. The service will vary on the mood the waiter is in on the day. The food is fairly good and the menu is what you’d expect from an Indian. In turn to the service the ambience will vary depending on the mood the staff are in. Recently we received a frosty reception the restaurant was empty. It didn’t improve during the meal. Upminster is saturated with places to eat and there are a number of Indian restaurants in the town. So if one is busy, there is a reason for it! Anyway the bill came and it seemed very expensive for our small party of three. At least the curry was ok. Next time I’d have a take away and enjoy my own ambience

Menu price on their website needs updating, completely different price and when asking they say ohh its an old price!!! Well update it then. It’s been like this for around 2 years and i have mentioned this to them before. I hate when a company shows a price but charges you different and then say ohh its an old menu. Management update your website price! Food is pretty good though most of the times and service is fast. Havnt had any problems their to be honest.

Went to this restaurant as they take taste card. Starters and food OK but drink was expensive. Waiter who took our order not very friendly. Popadoms were shop bought and not good. Ordered sweets was told none available only lassey. Had not visited restaurant for a while but will not return lots of other curry houses in area to visit.

Had a meal delivered for our family £60, we had 5 different dishes and each one had tough chicken in really big chunks, not much of the chicken filled up with potatoes instead. The chicken was dry and chewy. When we called the restaurant they said the chef was off and a second chef in place and had the phone put down on me. Food was so substandard. Not good enough. Tried to call but number is not recognised???
Masala grill serves pretty standard "British" Indian food but does it very well. You will find the usual selection of vindaloo, korma and some less usual currys such as Cylon. The currys can be quite hot but are all tasty. Wine and beer selection is adequate.

Collected our first meal from here today. Top quality ingredients and the tastes were exceptional. We had two chicken tikka main course and a chicken madras. The main course we cooked perfectly and had a lovely smokey taste. The madras was exactly how I like it, nice and spicy but not to hot.

I visited with my partner and son. It was my partner's birthday and they pulled out all of the stops in a Covid safe way. The food was very nice, staff were lovely & efficient, and the premises was well presented and clean. Although we didn't opt for it this time, we noticed a good 3 course deal in the week, which may help to keep the price down.
Took my wife here for her birthday the place was shocking 2 Meter distance was a joke I had people all around me coughing and sneezing we felt really uncomfortable and when the food turned up it was cold the cutlery was dirty we complained paid the bill and left would not recommend this place to my worst enemy avoided at all costs
Best Indian in Essex! the food is always spot on. I love how a well established place are not shy on offering good deals like there involved in the eat out government scheme, but when that finishes, their taste card 50% off whole menu is blinding! Makes it really good value. Also the staff is brilliant not to mention the manager.
It's not the best Indian food in London but it's obviously one of the best tastes in the neighborhood. The stuff is quite kind and helpful. The dishes are not extremely spicy. I suppose they have basically adjusted the spice level to a resistible level for British people. In short, it's a place that you can go without any doubt.
Lovely food, good service and reasonable prices. Great value with the 50% off food offer. We ordered a variety of mains, side dishes, rices and breads - all tasty and nice tender, lean meat.

Special Biriani. .....wet?? With a squashed gutted fried egg on top? Eew Korma too sweet and sand-like texture Popodoms...ok. the chutneys. ...indescribable purees. The spinach and lentils curry....tasteless and weird. Mango lassie? I'm not sure what it is made of. The naan bread....good! Beer? Thank god it was cold.
Early New Years Eve meal. Great ambience, accommodated us at late notice. I had a king prawn Ceylon curry which was delicious. My boyfriend said his chicken Razella was the best curry he’d had in ages. The manager told us the food is so good because of the fabulous female chef. Would definitely recommend.
First time coming to this Indian tonight, and I have to say the food is outstanding, the portions and flavour are incredible, defiantly one the best Indian restaurants I've been too, the staff are very polite and friendly, if I could give 10 stars I would, thank you so much again I had a lovely evening :)
Every day i walk past and see that it is busy and thought tonight is the night that i try it with my family instead of other curry houses in Upminster. It was very average and a little disappointing if I am honest. Won't go back and will stick with kush, village and spice of India in Cranham!
Tried a lot of Indian restaurants in Upminster, this one was on the list. I had a Garlic Chicken dish - i would avoid, taste was bland, my wife opted for a Khari again seemed to taste the same sauce, mine just had lots of Garlic in it. Would not go back, but i am fussy about Indian food.
Have always had great food, impeccable service and as they take Tastecard, its a very good price. Never been disappointed.

Went in on fathers day. We had limited time. Food came quickly and was fantastic. Whilst eating I said to my granddaughter that this food is lovely. She replied 'you must tell them grandad'. That's why I'm posting this review. Never post reviews
The first time I visited Masala grill for dinner was as a group of four people. The food and the service were both good. The waiter was friendly and efficient. The restaurant tables were not on top of each other like some other restaurants
I tried this restaurant yesterday and the food was excellent. There was a good variety of food, with good portions and reasonably priced. I'd recommend the lamb bunna, and the chops were a knock out. I'll definitely be back for round two!!!
Personally my favourite Indian restaurant in Havering! The service is brilliant and the food is even better! Sunday and Wednesday have great offers on too! I'd recommend the Lamb Chops or the Mixed Grill as these are out of this world!
Really good food, everything was cooked perfectly and reasonably priced for the quality of the dishes.

Hot and on time and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, of the three dishes we received, all were tasteless. The mince in the keema nan was very undercooked. This is the first time we have ordered from here, and unfortunately the last.
Delicious food, all around! We ordered eight dishes and all eight were phenomenal. The waitstaff was kind, funny, and attentive. Lovely hot towels at the end and a chocolate made the dinner special. Thank you for a great meal!!
This review is based on vegetarian dishes.Items need to be increased in varieties. Also there is a scope for improvement for taste of the dishes.

Very disappointed with our visit yesterday. Social distancing was totally ignored, the place was packed full. The food was nowhere near as good as it used to be, just mediocre. We won't be returning.
Great restaurant . Good food and service . The place is clean and tidy and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Been coming here for many years now. I agree the owner is very friendly and accommodating.
First visit since covid19 lockdown, really good, clean, spaced out well. But most importantly the food and service was just as good as it was before. Keep up the good work masala grill …
Ordered a lovely take away from this local restaurant..The food was delicious, especially the lamb chops. The food arrived promptly and was piping hot. Will definitely order again soon.
First visit in ages due to lockdown and new baby but so glad we got a baby sitter and treated ourselves. The food is first class and everything tastes fresh, thoroughly recommended.
Amazing food! Best Indian I've had in a long time....service great didn't have to wait too long for food...there was 6 of us that thoroughly enjoyed it...would definitely go again.
Good meal but busy being a Saturday night, not helped by the next tablet having about 8 children on it. But will be back.

Time and time again Masala Grill delivers. Fresh delicious food, good portions and service with a smile. Family run business and a superb one at that.
Magnificent array of great classics. Iqbal the boss is by far the friendliest and amiable restauranteur in the area. Excellent take out service also.
Everything was below par. Could do better in all areas especially service. Wouldn’t recommend this place. My family and I had terrible experience.
Bombay potatoes bland and not much taste in the chicken masala but everyone else's lamb dish they said was lovely
