Went in on a Monday around 11am to grab some burritos and was met by a barista with a MAJOR ATTITUDE PROBLEM. I've had her serve me before and I always feel like she's about ready to start a fight with me, like I'm in trouble for something. The short gal with dark hair and all kinds of jewelry. The last person who recently gave a one-star review mentioned the 'unfriendly stare' if you try to talk to some of the baristas and I've experienced that, too. It's not even so much an attitude problem as it is aggression, be it passive or direct, but it feels more direct. Geez, if you don't like your job, do something else. I've been in this neighborhood for over 20 years and it really puts me off that a new crew of people within the last few years can take over what used to be a friendly neighborhood spot w/out any regard for the community and locals that have kept this place afloat for so long. The 2 bags of chips I got—one was completely full and the other was hardly filled up—blatant carelessness. I'll keep coming here but maybe not as much, this place needs to hire some new faces. No need to reply with an insincere comment saying how you apologize for this & that because if you really cared, you'd do something about it. So much for feeling like this a welcoming place because I don't feel welcome whenever I come in here at all. I'd like to give more stars because the food here is good.
This morning I visited May Day right when it opened. I ordered something by describing what it was made of instead of by name (espresso in a black coffee with sugar free simple syrup). For some reason instead of responding, "Ok, we call that a red-eye," which would actually have been informative for me, the barista said, "So...a red-eye?" I don't buy a lot of coffee, or remember the names of things very well (I'm neurologically atypical and this is not my strong suit), but at other restaurants and cafes they don't usually make me feel stupid for it. I also inquired whether the muffins were vegan, and the same barista said, "I don't know," and ten seconds passed in silence before I asked if she may be able to check, so she sighed and replied, "...I guess," and asked someone. It turns out they're not, and according to her at this hour there were no other vegan options on the menu (apparently there's pizza later). It seems strange to advertise being vegan, but who knows, by this point I felt so unwelcome, like such an impediment to whatever a "normal" customer would be in this cafe that i just wanted to get my stuff and leave. The coffee was not great, but I didn't have it there as planned (because of above) so it's more difficult to judge having carried it for 20 minutes in the cold.
My spouse and I have been here twice, but every time we come there is always a weird vibe with the staff. They often come off as unfriendly and stand-offish towards us, even when we go out of our way to try and be friendly to them. I gave a friendly “hi” to the cashier as I was approaching the counter, and was met with no response, just a stare. As a visibly queer and BIPOC couple we take interactions like this as a red flag.... it feels very performative for staff to be wearing a shirt that says "ACAB", and have signs around the store saying "all are welcome here" and "Black Lives Matter", when the staff on multiple occasions has been unfriendly to my spouse and I as a BIPOC queer couple. Each time we have come in, we watch the staff be extra friendly and outgoing to white people immediately after uncomfortably trying to interact with us. It feels like your standard case of “Minnesota Nice” aka “Minnesota Passive Aggressively Racist”. My spouse and I always try to write our reviews about establishments honestly in order to allow people of color to know what they're walking into when they come into spaces like this. Be wary of this performative space!
A staple of our neighborhood. Best cup of coffee or made to order latte around. The baked goods are delicious, seriously delicious. They do not have the same offerings every day, and they do make a limited quantity, so get there early! When you do get what you were looking for, as they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder. Heavenly pastries include but are not limited to the Almond Croissant (oh so flaky and rich!), Danish (any selection of fruit available) and Scones (from the vegan selection to gluten free to the strawberry cream). Then there is the food selection! Quiche, breakfast sandwiches, burritos, and much more. Come support our local Café. They deserve your patronage, and you will be happy you did =) Edit: Same wonderful Café with the same atmosphere years later. The owners are doing it right.

As I entered the May Day Cafe, I was warmly greeted with a wide smile which emanated from the most hospitable being I have laid eyes on. With great fervor, she described the green tea which would come to change my life forever. Like a dad gazing over a freshly mowed lawn, I shed one small tear as I witnessed her scooping the tea into a bag and placing it gingerly into the warm pool. I received the tea with great ceremony. In a moment of distracted passion and yearning, I slipped in my hurried pace and my drink shattered across the floor. The transparent green pool turned into a scattered puddle. My heart empty, the passion gone, and my hope for a hug in a cup disappeared. I wept. As I emerged from my sorrowful episode, I see her, with great ceremony, extend another warm, green, transparent pool of the gods.
May Day is the perfect neighborhood bakery, and they even have a couple of gluten free options. Their breakfast sandwiches on the weekend are delicious and the ham, egg, and cheese can be made gf. For gluten eaters, my partner loves the veggie sausage breakfast sandwich, croissants, and especially the cinnamon rolls. He literally said the other day, that whenever he tries a cinnamon roll somewhere else, he always ends up really wanting a May Day cinnamon roll because they are the best. My kids LOVE the chocolate croissants! They also post their daily menus on Instagram @may.day.cafe.mpls and Facebook.

Everything about this place is delicious!!! We all enjoyed our food, the atmosphere is so welcoming, there's local art, and the music--bringing back old school, Too Short, 8Ball & MJG, DMX, Biggie, Tevin Campbell...I will be back next time I'm around for lunch. I tried the pizza, compliments to the chef... rosemary, potato with caramelized onions and bacon. It was perfect. My friends enjoyed the gigantic sandwich, the cold pasta salad elote style, a scone and the quiche! If you are in the area, or not...go check it out, the service was amazing as well.

Plenty of spaces withing a block, I scored a spot just across the street.
I went here with a friend for brunch. They mention on their website that they have vegan options. The only option when we went was a bean salad and a plain scone. Both were good although nothing exciting but I don't know if I would go back with so few options. The service was also not very friendly. We were in line behind others and reading the menu since it was a first time there and one of the staff kept asking "what do you want?" and we kept saying "we are looking at the menu." No one was behind us or we would have let them go ahead of us. If you expect people to know what they want even before they get in line, menus should probably be made available. Regardless, seems like a popular local spot with nice cafe food if you aren't vegan.
As much as I would love to support this place, I have been in 4 times and have been greeted by unwelcoming baristas. Not rude or anything like that , just stoic. Would it kill you to say "thank you"? NOT ONCE! Oh, wait, how about "hello". I would fire each and ever one of you if you were my employee. I feel like you are nice people who should be in the other end of the house. I literally live around the corner and I won't return. Please stop just looking at someone and saying how much they owe you and handing cash back and walking away. I'm so disappointed. I am not difficult to please, and for me to be this angry is huge. Good luck and I wish you improvement.
Unless into this kind of thing, find somewhere else. Went there this summer, it was overcrowded so we had to sit outside. It was really dirty out there, areas seemed like they hadn't been cleaned in awhile. I personally felt it was a bit pricey, but not uncommon for places like this. It did take me about 30 minutes to get my quiche. I think they forgot about my order but wouldn't simply tell me that, which of course to me was the worse part. The customer service was horrible, attitudes. My sister worked there years ago, but she had a hard time defending our visit. Some of it might have been wrong timing, but some of my issues had nothing to do with that.
First off, no one greets you they just stand and stare at you like zombies. And I hope you don't mind waiting 20 minutes for a ham sandwich. Told them I needed it to go cause I didn't think it would take 12 years to make and they older blonde lady gother attitude after staring at me for 5 seconds like she didn't know what I was talking about. There's no system for anything the place is poorly ran I have no idea how they're still in business. It smells like dirty hippies too so that's not an ideal atmosphere. I'd recommend everyone to go somewhere else. The place is awful. This was 4/11/17
Coffee, mint lemonade, and oatmeal chocolate chip cookie was fabulous! I kept checking during my visit to the area to see if they have more of those cookies. The cinnamon roll was good, although a cake like bun instead of the traditional doughy glob (I like the glob, but I liked this too!). I did have a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese, and vegetarian "sausage" which was not my favorite. The sausage was fine but there was something that I can't describe that I didn't enjoy about the other elements of the sandwich. I would definitely come back!
Despite the fact that many people I love enjoy this space, I have never had a good experience. I have been in so many times and watched my friends get good service only to have the same people treat me like I am ruining their day by asking a question or placing an order. I have gone to May Day cafe on and off for a decade and I have never felt welcome. The space and people they attract are performative. It’s heartbreaking to not even get mediocre service but to repeatedly be treated poorly in a space where others are clearly treated well.
Mayday is a quintessential neighborhood coffee shop. You are almost guaranteed to see someone you know, the art is funky. If someone borrows the funny pages from your table, they will point out their favorite comic strip when they return it. The coffee is solid and they have a surprising assortment of homemade pastries and light meals, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. The vegan chocolate chip cookie is my favorite, but be sure to bring a friend (or two!) to split it with.
A great cup of drip coffee for such a neighborhood friendly price! What made this cafe so cool for me was that it was the customers that were creating the vibe of the place, sort of reflecting the neighborhood culture, blending all good things about this neighborhood into this one small cafe. They have many bakery options and their coffee cake was delicious.

queer friendly. solid, reliable, cheap, great food, coffee, and people. personally I don't think the burritos are worth it, but the pizza is great and only 3.75 for like a 5x5 inch square. although that and the quiche and some other stuff changes every few days, I always love it. date bars are great and 1.75. you'll always get a big portion for the price. ALSO I thought I was overcharged recently, and I was wrong, but the manager was VERY committed to resolving the issue.
Service was friendly and quick, and the food was amazing....it is this very granola-looking place, but their french-style pastries are some of the best I have ever had, (including from people who trained for them in France!). They also make these focaccia mini-pizzas.... crunchy crust and toasted cheese, luscious bursts of roma or cherry tomatoes, house-roasted red bell peppers...or whatever the chef decided to grab.... worth walking through miles of snow for !!!
May Day Cafe is super cute and the staff are great! Despite the meat, cheese and eggs to go Lauren the menu, they are more than willing to accommodate vegan request. In fact, they had vegan pecan sandies. However, my little minion and I opted for the vegan black bean breakfast burrito, which came with the salad, from $5.50 plus tax. It was really good! Although, it would be nice if they could throw in a few veggies instead of it being just black beans and rice.
Just an all around lovely place! Great coffee, very homey, cozy interior that is kid friendly, a wonderfully refreshing progressive attitude. Oh and the quiche. Don't let me forget the quiche. A HUGE slice of quiche comes with a small side salad, which proves to be the best deal ever. Try the quiche. Am I saying "quiche" too much? I feel like I'm saying "quiche" too much... Anyway, come to Mayday and spend all you're money to support a great place.
Beats Starbucks by a huge mile. It's not just the coffee that is good and reasonably priced, but the food is also quite excellent. The croissants are freshly baked, some of the best I've had in the US. Also tried the pesto pizza with goat cheese, and it did not disappoint.

On one hand the products offered here are really great. I love the great croissants, and zucchini bread. But at least 3x a week I stand in line for at least 15 minuets! And that's when there is one 6 people in line ahead of me. They need one more register to move the line quicker!!! Beyond the infuriating line this is a great local coffee/bakery. Get there early for fresh baked croissants that giveI A Bakers Wife a run for their money.
My son & I each tried a cup of their coffee. Let's just say we will NOT be going back any time soon. The after taste was the only thing good about it. It smelled like it had been on the burner all day, and the taste was just as bad. I ended up dumping mine down the drain. Sorry for the non-positive review. I just couldn't drink it. I ordered a "drip coffee". We also split a chocolate chip cookie. It was OK. It was over-baked.
I've been going to May Day cafe since the day it opened, and have known the different people running it throughout the years. It's our neighborhood's cafe, and is emblematic of the people who live here. Giant cookies, awesome burritos, and truly some of the best croissants in the world. I'm not kidding about that last one, I have never had a more satisfying croissant in my life and I've traveled throughout the US and Europe.
My wife and I moved to this neighborhood 2 months ago and have heard great things about this place! We decided to try it out this last Friday and we will now be regulars! The staff were super friendly and helpful in giving us recommendations, especially a fellow Sailor Moon fan who raved about the soy milk cappuccino! It was DIVINE! Looking forward to coming back soon!

There's something very special about May Day. I very much miss living a few blocks away, but we have made it back a few times since we moved a year ago and it's like coming home. If you’re looking for something more substantial than a baked good go for the breakfast sandwich. The veggie sausage is fantastic. Their soups are always delicious.

I like this cozy, lil place. The venue is chill and its nice to do some homework or chat with some friends. They have big, delicious cookies and other pastries, alongside a couple of main dishes that I haven't tried out yet. They also have a jar of milk bones that I think are free to give out. I'll go ask next time I'm there on a walk with my puppy. The workers here are friendly and helpful.
Chill local spot. The food was all quality - quiche was really good - but if you get a lunch sandwich they're premade and don't provide any condiments so kinda disappointing considering how much effort they put into everything else

I've been coming here very often lately and I'm never disappointed with what I get. I got the spinach quiche this time and it was perfectly seasoned, light and fluffy, and left me blissfully satisfied after all was said and done. I also got the jalapeño cheddar scone and it's a good thing I don't live next door to may day cause I'd burn through my savings buying those scones.
Awesome shop, they have legit breakfast food along with a full bakery case of goodies. Got a latte, my husband got a miel and both were really good. The atmosphere is really cool as well. Will definitely be back!

Good eats and good greets. I'm not sure what that review about rude baristas was talking about. Yeah, it's usually crowd right around the morning hours with a line practically out the door. But came by around 4pm today with an appetite and was very happy with my caper, rosemary, garlic pizza. Can't beat 3.75 for a hunk of za!!! PS the lemon strawberry muffins are great too.
Fantastic local cafe in the heart of South Minneapolis. The almond croissant i had was tasty and the cold press coffee roast had great depth of flavor. You can get all kinds of food here not just coffee and pastries. The patio is dog friendly. Don't be put off by the number of people in line because it moves quickly. It is just a sign of how good this place is.
Little piece of leftists’ paradise. Scone was excellent, so was the latte. Love the thrifty atmosphere. May Day is the definition of neighborly coffee shop. Will be back to try the different breakfast offerings.

Very disorganized place. They were out of breakfast burritos so I ordered the broccoli quiche. It normally comes with a small fresh side salad, but they ran out of lettuce. The woman said she would bring it out to me. 20 min later I went to see if it was ready and she gives me the spinach quiche - NOT what I ordered. I wish I didn't come here...
I thoroughly enjoyed their jalapeno cheddar scone. Not hot, no worries, just a bit of heat and airy, not dry dense; still plenty to chew on, but you don't have to dunk it in coffee to be able to eat it. It gets better - try their crunch bar. It is wonderfully rich and nutty (almonds, sesame, flax and more) - at a great price, so tip well!
The perfect accent to this warm/welcoming community. The baked goods are FIRE -- particularly the danishes and scones. You can't go wrong with a caramel latte. I like to walk across Powderhorn Park and enjoy the sights and sounds before/after. These are the best savory scones ever. Seriously, give them an award.
My 1st time here, to have a coffee. Wonderful & priced very economical vs the high priced Caribou & Starbucks. The coffee was better than both of these places! I had an amazing piece of pizza. Sitting outside in the sunshine was the best. This is a very charming coffee shop, with a large variety of great food!!
My sister and I both got the veggie sausage breakfast sandwich and they were delicious! Buttery and flavorful, everything you want a breakfast sandwich to be. We also had to get a croissant and pain au chocolat because they were freshly made. She said it was in the top three best croissants she’s ever had!
I would give 10000000000000 stars out of 5 if I could. My favorite cafe in Minneapolis by far, and probably anywhere of all time.

The best coffee and baked goods in the area! And here are the reasons. - WORTH THE WAIT IF THERES A LINE - Smothest high quality COFFEE - Gluten free at its best - Some super taste breakfast/lunch items - Kind people that work here - Open atmosphere - Great community/local support -back to business
Decent Americano, although without the characteristic crema of well made espresso. Quiche crust was very rubbery. Scones looked overworked. Very homey feel on the inside with mismatched furniture and limited, sometimes communal seating. It was hard to find a seat on a Tuesday morning at 10:30 am.
The Mayday anchors the Powderhorn arts and avtivist community. As such it is usually very busy, but also seems to have a table open most of the time. The food pastries and coffee are high quality, and the vibe funky. Not the best if you are in a hurry, because of its size and volume of business.
Best latte around! Their carmel lattes are seriously divine. On the whole, I also spend less money here than I would at a Caribou or Starbucks. Support your local cafe, AND make your wallet and tummy happy. Looking forward to coming back soon and trying one of their HUGE quiche slices …
Food is pretty great hear. They do a great job with their breakfast burrito and baked items. But the service is rather awful. On several instances, they would forget to get me a drink that I just ordered. The cafe area is also rather small, although they do have reliable internet.
A friend and I meet here every few months. A few years ago we tried to visit places that made homemade croissants to find the best. After trying many places around Minneapolis we decided that May Day had some of the best. I also really like there ham and swiss breakfast panini.
May Day is a real honest-to-goodness neighborhood cafe. Affordable, totally homemade, and they use actual dishes vs disposable. This is what a neighborhood needs, nourishing food they can afford and owners who care. Wish there were spots like this everywhere! Thanks May Day!
What a cool place to go to! The coffee and pastries are not only delicious, but also cheap. Coffee is a dollar and pastries average around 2.50. The bread slices are enough for at two people. I cannot wait to go back and visit Minneapolis again just for the May Day Cafe.
3rd time here and as always everything is awesome. The food, pastries, teas, coffee, even the art (they support local artists and the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association PPNA) are awesome. Some organic choices are available. Great staff and family friendly.
OMGEEE that vegan pizza is absolutely to die for. The other gem that is highly addictive is the vegan oatmeal coconut chocolate chip cookie. Too bad both things are super hard to find. I think the pizza is regular on Mondays, the cookie, when the stars align.
Low key coffee shop with a variety of decent food items. Everything is reasonably priced and fair quality. The outdoor seating is simple but great in the spring and summer. This is a place where people come to meet up and feel comfortable staying for hours.
Great food. We came here for a late breakfast / early lunch and found the sandwiches to be filling and satisfying. They have an assortment of good deserts as well. No complaints yet except the line was a little long due to popularity. Will be back.

First time at May Day and it was a great experience. Great place for brunch! We had the vegan curry cashew rice, red pepper lentil soup, cappuccino w/ almond milk, hot apple cider, vegan cherry almond scone, and vegan oatmeal cookie!
i have been a huge fan of this local coffee shop since i first stepped foot in it nearly a decade ago! the biggest problem is it's popularity--it is often very busy, which can result in long waits and limited seating options.
I love this quaint little restaurant. Staff and customers are all pretty laid-back and friendly. The food is healthy and yummy. Parking's a little bit of a challenge but other than that I have zero complaints.

I love this homey cafe and need to stop in more often now that I live within walking distance. The food and baked goods are always excellent and it's so helpful the restroom has a changing table as well!
How all those amazing baked goods come out of such a small kitchen is a mystery to me. So happy to have this place within walking distance. Also very happy they expanded their hours and days open.
Awesome baristas, homemade pastries and lunch food& fair trade coffee. If I could move next door I would! Plus the vibe in general is relaxing and I could definitely imagine myself studying there.
By far one of the best coffee shops in the Twin Cities. Delicious and affordable. It doesn't get any better than this. I highly recommend this place if you love good coffee and homemade pastries.

My favorite "Adult Hippy" cafe. Warm staff, good food and excellent baked goods. Come at 9am and get a few of their almond croissants fresh out of the oven. They are well worth the coin!
Okay coffee. Good pastries. Line is always way slower than it should be. And the food may or may not be there depending on the day of the week and depending on how much they've made.

First time here and I would definitely recommend this place! Great coffee, home made breads, muffins, cookies and more. Its nice to get great eats without breaking the bank!
The food is pretty good- breakfast & pastries. The coffee is alright. The staff are all edgy & hip. The layout of the café is really inconvenient and makes for crowding.
Lovely little café in a beautiful neighborhood, right near Powderhorn Park. Some outside seating available. Really good vegetarian options on their limited food menu.
I love the small foccacia with the rotating topping combinations. Wonderful bakery. Expect to wait in line for a few minutes; you will be rewarded for your patience.
Small. Well kept. Delicious. Friendly. Cozy. Neighborhood. Cafe. Good vegan / veg options for a coffee shop. I recommend the breakfast sandwich. Cool local artwork.
Awesome food and coffee. Beware the quiche is huge, so don't plan on eating much else. Perhaps bring another person to help. Best quiche I have had in a long time.
Out favorite little neighborhood hang. Good coffee, love their cinnamon rolls and basil-cheese scones! A cozy, down-to-earth place to go solo, or to enjoy company.
Great little spot with old hippie vibe. They have excellent bakery goods and food. Downside is - it’s usually pretty crowded and difficult to get outside seating.
Great food and pastries. Jalapeño cheddar scone highly recommend. Friendly staff and customers. This coffee shop captures the neighborhood essence of Powderhorn.
Some of the best croissants in town, along with other great scratch baked goods and light meals. (During COVID closure doing takeaway every other Saturday)
Small coffee shop, it can get really busy with a line outside of the door. Staff is nice but make sure they remember your order. The quiche is great.
Friendly service, great coffee, an array of amazing baked goods, and an inclusive atmosphere. The Mat Day Cafe is a lovely little neighborhood spot!
Fire. The most fire cinnamon rolls of all time featuring other great cakes breads danishes and the like. Thank you MayDay changed my life many times
Our neighborhood place. Friendly for all, and a solid menu with some GF and veg options. Prices are great for the quality. Service is pretty mellow.
One hour before close on "Easter Sunday"! Good banana bread - no zucchini bread- [my go to], good conversation sitting outside! Beautiful day!
Consistently good pastries and strong coffee. The caramel rolls and danishes are excellent. Espresso is hit and miss. Be prepared for a line.
Relaxed, comfortable environment that is welcoming and diverse. It can get pretty busy. They do have some very tasty gluten free scones!
Best cream danish in town. Other pastries and food is good too. This is a very reasonably priced place. They could charge way more.
Great coffee, nice people, great atmosphere. Listening to weird Al right now

Crowded but pleasant spot for coffee and a pastry. The croissants (made in-house) are excellent! Only complaint is the slow WiFi.
One of my favorite cafes in the Twin Cities. It has inexpensive delicious food and decent coffee. It is inclusive and friendly.
Hungry or thirsty for Breakfast, lunch, or something sweet. This is the spot. Fresh squeezed orange juice is also my go to!
Delicious mixed berry muffin and custard and berry pastry. Cappuccino was a little bitter tasting for me. Friendly service!
Who doesn't like May Day Cafe? Great baked goods and coffee. Small and comfy, South Minneapolis neighborhood, coffee shop.
Best croissants around! Plus lots of other amazing baked goods at great prices. And of course good coffee. Love May Day.
