"An amazing museum rivaling any other world class modern art museum"
"It's a cool place to hangout, except it didn't feel very safe bc there is no security and there appears to be a large number of people living in and around the area"
"I was really looking forward to visiting this museum"
"I AM BLOWN AWAY"
"Very beautiful place, a must see! It was my first time in Rio and I visited a couple of the museums however, by far this is my favorite if you're into art painting sculptures whatever it is definitely check the spot out"
An amazing museum rivaling any other world class modern art museum. With an extremely low entrance fee and discounts for students, this is the best way to view some of the most impressive works that Rio and Brazil have to offer. Extremely forward thinking pieces that are creative and outside of the box. They offer the mindset of contemporary and modern focuses while sometimes looking back at a historical context. From the old film equipment gallery to the historical photography exhibit. The stunning pieces bring out the inquisitive side in any mind young or old and makes you ponder about the future and art itself. I would not miss this museum for anything and it's truly a highlight of my visit to Rio.
It's a cool place to hangout, except it didn't feel very safe bc there is no security and there appears to be a large number of people living in and around the area. I don't fault people for not having a place to go, they are simply existing. There is obviously a need for more jobs, and having security simply walking around keeping the peace is a good way to provide both safety and jobs. I do not accept that there is not enough money to provide for public safety. I saw at least 50 people sitting around, what if some of them were hired to wear a uniform and keep the peace in the area? Sometimes, simply giving someone a job and an identity can save them.
I was really looking forward to visiting this museum. However, prior to paying our ticket a lady explains that HALF of the exhibition is closed due to renovations. I assumed her next sentence would be "and because of that we are offering half price tickets." OH NO!!!! She wanted us to pay FULL price for a HALF of an exhibition!!! How does this make ANY sense? I even asked her for a discount just in case she somehow forgot to tell us about some type of discount. She confirmed that we would pay FULL price for a HALF of an exhibition. Needless to say, we did not go see the half show for the full price. Ridiculous!
I AM BLOWN AWAY. way exceeding my expectations. I went to MAM and other contemporary art museums in the Sao Paulo area last week, too. And they are a NOMATCH for this. photos allowed without flash. If you are into contemporary arts in any way, find a way not to miss it. very well laid out, very roomy, they can fit in huge pieces comfortably. compositions are also lovely. large variety. building is just the right spot for this. i ended up taking pics of layouts and building as well. and its right by the sea. it's a no-brainer. i enjoyed it very very much.
Very beautiful place, a must see! It was my first time in Rio and I visited a couple of the museums however, by far this is my favorite if you're into art painting sculptures whatever it is definitely check the spot out. They had dancing outside of the museum. It was very beautiful and definitely check out the wall butts lol.

The architecture of the museum itself is great. With that said, the middle staircase has a skimpy rail with a 3.5 foot gap which most kids can fall trough with very little effort but It's not anything to loose a star over (perhaps a foot or a life, but not a star). They did loose 1 star for the bland exhibit they had at the time I visited, but that's just my taste. I think it's worth a visit.
A very traditional Contemporary/Modern Art museum worth a visit through the whole year long. Located at the popular Flamengo Park. The building itself has one of the most beautiful architectural projects you'll see in the country. Great for photography. It has a very charming water garden, lecture halls, a theater room, an art shop and a coffeeshop. The staff is mostly great and very helpful.
HOLD YOUR KIDS ! They can fall from 10m to the floor because they can pass under the parapet which is 1,2m night. This is the central stairs, and nothing indicates the danger on the dark floor ! Beyond that only the modern architecture and the coffee are interesting in this place. The "exhibition" is smaller than any of the 200 private galleries in Paris, when entrance is free.
The worst museum of modern arts I've been to in my whole life, and I've been to many. Basically it was an exhibition of few random mediocre photos. I regret having paid the suggested admission of R$20. Someone working there told me that there'd be more on exhibition just after 19th of July. Spare the time and money and go elsewhere in this awesome city as this place is a joke.
I've passed this museum many times and always wanted to go. I was pleasantly surprised to find out what I had been missing. Truly uniquely inspiring displays of artwork from the African diaspora in Rio and Brazil. Tickets were cheap and easy to get, the line went quicky. Its a great way to spend 1-2 hours, I recommend visiting every exhibit!
I found the place a very beautiful landmark, however poorly maintained and curated. The art shop is extremely beautiful and its art selection on sale very impressive. The bistro could earn more attention from their managers, the menus are rather meager, but the espresso is reasonable. The attendants are VERY KIND and helpful.
The worst ,,museum" i have seen in my live it's the smallest you will ever see in your live. Nothing to see there in my school we had better exhibition and few times bigger. It's a shame people have to pay for it and don't understand why they hired people to protect Exponats when they are literally worthless.
Rio's modern art museum. It's pretty big and usually is home of bazaars and artist meetups as well of exhibitions. Definitely worth a while checking out if you want to know local artists' work. Do search what is on display beforehand, since it might be a little tricky to get there/leave on foot.
Small but interesting. We visited on a Sunday and the area is obviously a big draw for the local art students. There's a WW2 war memorial nearby which was interesting. Who knew Brazilian troops fought in Italy!

While the space is amazing, it seems the collection stopped developing 40 years ago. Also, temporary exhibitions could use some foreigner artists as well to promote the amazing, but otherwise unlinked, local contemporary Brazilian artists. Will be visiting again in hopes to change this rating.
How you will enjoy this place will depend on the exhibition that you attend to. But, regardless of it, the building is beautiful, as well as the gardens in front of it. The gardens are a great place for a picnic, since you can see the Guanabara Bay and the Sugar Loaf form there
This is a place with all the potencial. Beautiful architecture & gardens with terrible maintenance. Making everything look quite bad. The exhibitions inside are very mediocre & again very bad care of the space. Shame because I would have loved to see this in it’s glory
It's a pretty good museum, but doesn't worth the price and has very little exhibitions despite of the fact that outside it looks big. The stuff is friendly though.

I felt way more engaged here than at the art museums back home and I can’t speak Portuguese at all… the art is thought provoking and adds great non-verbal commentary

Feels like a high school art class exhibition. Entrance is only 20$ but not worth the visit at all. Area feels unsafe, not recommended on Sundays

Not really much to see when we went. Maybe they were between exhibitions. It is a little unfair to compare it to galleries in London, NYC and elsewhere…but it wasn’t really all that much to write home about!
Nice skating grounds, challenging and stuff. The expos never been there. Nice place to take pictures, take a walk during the day. When not very well patrolled it's always full of hobos hanging out.
This modern art museum has outstanding and also terrible exibitions. So, check it out what is in exibition before going there. From the outside area you have an increadible view of Guanabara Bay.
Beautiful park location and contemporary building design. Nice representation of brazilian art from 1950-75.

Worst museum I have been to in a long time. I don't know if they were going for an average high school feel, but, they certainly achieved it. The building that the gallery is in is amazing.
We took uber there, it is not in a walking distance from every tourist place you might be. We checked before that Sunday's and Holidays was old anyway. It wasn't today. …
A lovely modern set museum near the Santos Dumond airport. The exhibit space is cool and this is a good morning morning or afternoon hang inside and out by Marina de Glória.
From entry to exit, the work here is massive (sometimes literally and always emotionally). Not for the faint of heart. There is a skybridge to access the museum from Centro.
There are powerful pieces - make sure to scan the qr code to get the artist vision as some of them are too complex to grasp without explanation. Enjoyed the works immensely
My favourite museum in Rio, practically a second home, an architectural wonder in this beautiful city and housing the best Brazilian artists public collection in the world!
Stunning brutalist building with nice surroundings for a relaxing weekend afternoon. Some exhibits are quite expensive, but generally it's worth checking them out.
Not much going on here. I don't know why, but it seemed like people just got some stuff out of the dumpster and put it together. It seemed sparse in there.
Don't bother unless it's raining. A few interesting exhibits, but unless you're a big fan of modern art then probably not going to be to your taste.
Only 2 exhibits open, another one in process of being created.

Very kind and helpful staff in the reception. The art displayed was a bit "just pictures on the wall". The biulding is partly being renovated.
Impeccable curation and feeling within the exhibition on all sensorial dimensions. Really appreciated the topics and the selection of works.
I can do this kind of "art" everyday in my toilets... Doesn't even worth to get there. It a shame that some sick persons call this "art".
Awe-inspiring architecture in scenic setting paves the way to the spectacular modernist art inside. A must-see for locals and tourists.
I has been disappointed in my visit here. The museum was almost empty. Only few collection were exposed. Might be a problem of timing?
Wonderful site, peacefull & calm! (Day time, mostly ; ) On the look out to find good company & friendship K3 Rio ! @clube_contato
Quite disappointed by the Brazilian modern at museums in terms of the exposed works. The building itself and the service are ok.
Not bad with photos, paintings and sculptures, but not as great as I expected. Free entrance and you can donate if u want.
Great location but terrible staff.

It's a nice and beautiful place for cultural interaction. A lot of cultural events related to urban art and new trends.
Silent and calm place. Here is close to airport, so if you have time until boarding, you can visit and enjoy here.
14 reais for the main exposition, nothing truly interesting for an ordinary person except some old photos of Rio.
Iconic building must visit of Rio by architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy surrounded by the Burle Max Flamengo Park.
Doesn't quite compare to the new MAR downtown in terms of quality of collection. A bit difficult to access.
Awesome place with ever changing events, shows and expositions. It is a must visit spot in Rio de Janeiro.
Although small, the MAM have a really interesting collection and events. The building is also beautiful.
Really nice place, needs some care and better car access, you need to escape a maze to reach this place
Not a great gallery - building would have been interesting except now neglected and looking shabby
Mega show mn

Although it requires more cleaning, the atmosphere is very democratic. It's worth a visit.
not that much to see, and ushers follow you around like you are about to break everything
Wonderful museum. It is astoundingly worth visiting. So many stories. So much reasoning!
A must. For its architecture and the garden design around it and for its collection.
Also check their Facebook page for screenings at the Cinemateca inside the Museum
Not too big exhibition and some really interesting modern art. Great experience.
Compact and interesting. I learned a lot about colonial Brazilian history here.
Loved it! If you enjoy modern art like me reserve at least 2h for the tour
The exhibitions are a waist of time, but the building is cool though.
Cool building, the interior is cool (stars). Exhibits are also great!
Was interested Not that special.... Stuff we're OK not that friendly
Opening hours was not updated. It was closed because Carnival party.
It was an interesting place. Very well organized, very nice to view.
Boring selection of exhibition. Not the level of museum in São Paulo
Good architecture. But beware, they lie, they do not have a pollock
Small selection of modern art

A very poor exhibition. The building with little maintenance
A representative view of Brazilian artists and their works.
The museum is in very bad shape as everything else in Rio.
Nice place but could be better content in the exhibitions
Moving main display. Magnificient building and concept.
Small exhibit. Very experimental and without substance.
Nice architecture, new based art ideal for visitors
Amazing building ! Great and inspiring collection !
