Although this is a big tourist destination, I've always heard that the Museum of the City of New York is an absolute must for New Yorkers. The museum is located on Fifth Avenue at about 103rd street, right across the street from Central Park's beautiful conservatory gardens. Lots to see and do in the area, so make a day of it. Suggested admission is $20 for adults, but free for anyone under 20 years old. Its about $15 for seniors (65+) and students over 20. There are also discounts available regularly via Groupon or your NYC Library Card. Be sure to check those out before visiting. I visited on a nice Sunday at around 12:30pm and it was NOT too crowded. There was enough space for everyone to take their time to read and see all of the exhibits without overcrowding. The Museum is amazing. Essentially three floors of well-designed exhibits offerings lots of information about the beginnings of NYC up through 2020. You'll learn about how New York came to be the iconic city that it is...and journey through its various decades. Though I've always visited museums to learn about other cultures and historic times...it is very different when you have lived through some of the exhibits...9/11...and most recently COVID-19 to name a few. The first floor is more of the information, taking you through each decade...must like what you would expect from a typical museum. There is also a FOod of New York exhibit currently in place there. The second floor has a lovely photography exhibit displaying photos of the "homes" of New Yorkers and another exhibit covering the various movements throughout the history of New York up through Black Live Matter. The third floor is dedicated to entertainment; music, movie and fashion that were influenced by New York. There is a large room surrounded by large monitors displaying popular New York-based movies...visitors can sit in the middle area and look all around..pretty cool. There is also a basement floor which has an informative movie showing every (30 minutes?!) about New York. There is a cafe there on the second floor which sells baked items from Amy's Bread. Street parking isn't bad on the weekends...particularly easy on Sundays when most of the parking restrictions are NOT in effect. I absolutely loved my visit to the Museum. Although I expected to be in and out in an hour or so...I ended up spending three hours there. While I think this is a great museum for everyone, I absolutely agree that it is a MUST for all New Yorkers.

A wonderful "little" museum that included a lot of variety. There were 4 exhibitions in total with each representing a different part of the city's history or culture. I paid 20$ but the entry fee was optional. If you 've already been to the National museum, New York Library and the MOMA this might curb a bit of that tourism itch. The first floor showed the main history of New york from New Amsterdam to the covid years. There was also a smaller room dedicated to New Yorks food culture. On the second floor there were two exhibitions with one taking a look into what people find home to be in the big city and the other side showed New Yorks resistance movements and struggles to change society in a variety of ways. It is definitely worth about 2-3 hours if you want something extra to satiate your curiosity about the "city that never sleeps". Additionally for those that enjoy history take the time to listen to some of the audio files and read the plaques instead of trying to find a famous "selfie picture" since you will be hard pressed to find any there. For art lovers the photos showing peoples ideas of home is a real treat. I had a great time and even if the café was slightly expensive the carrot cake was more made up for it. The museum is also conveniantly close to Central Park so take a stroll through on your way there or on your way home.

Born, raised, and educated in the borough of The Bronx, New York, after WWII by exceptional teachers in elementary schools who imbued my understanding of our country's early society, economic and cultural environment; I believed I knew at least the early history of New York. Apparently, many extremely important facts were replaced with fables to give we children the impression that the persecuted Europeans were very good and benevolent humans. The exhibits today, carefully curated by scholars and historians who created the content I experienced in just a few hours at The Museum of the City of New York, were revelatory. I spent only 3 hours happily engaged with the interactive content, then went to the 3rd floor and was throughly entertained by the audio-visual program, happily ensconced on comfortable hassocks, even laughing out loud at some of the New York City movie scenes I'd watched in another era. I thought that on a stormy Monday, the museum would be packed with kids with masks and or runny noses on school field trips, but there were none, with the exception of chaperoned children with their adult in tow. A true pleasure. I highly encourage anyone who needs or wants to know about New York City to make a trip to this museum.

As far as museums go, it's pretty manageable with only 3 main floors and 1 underground level. That's the only reason for 3 stars. To be honest, I was a bit let down. There was only one gallery/exhibit where they truly talked about the history of NYC, and they jumped or summarized a lot of periods. Another exhibit on the second floor did have a recap of technology, mainly communications and work applicable, as it developed over the 1900s. That was it though on the history. Other exhibits showed contemporary photographs, odd food details, and a gingerbread contest. Finally there was a video presentation about the history of NYC, but it really was just a recap of everything seen in that first exhibit gallery. They basically talk mostly about the founding of the city and early growth. Then jump to the early 1900s and development of mansions and early skyscrapers. Very little history in between given exposition. No revolutionary War history, urbanization, changing trends, etc. Good if in that area near Central Park that day. Otherwise you can probably learn most of the history shown here online. One tidbit of information that I did appreciate and was new to me was learning about the stock market women first working there.

As a proud resident this is a wonderful museum to show our cities history. The exhibits and spaces were thoughtfully curated and provided great insight. Overall, it is a true gem and highly recommend visiting this museum. The reason why for 4 and not 5 stars was about the only downside that I personally had. Which was the tour guide individual. Our tour guide was very insightful in general but preached about telling both/all sides of the story but with the Irish it seemed more one sided. In regard to the Irish and it was stated " the Germans where more family oriented and the Irish were not" when discussing why the Irish migrated to the states but failed to mention the great famine etc. It also seemed subtle digs were made to the Irish by pointing out the "horrible" things they did here and didn't say anything positive about them even though they have a rich but also controversial history here. All history has controversy but at least make an attempt to not be one sided. Regardless Thank you and we do plan making another trip to this museum.

If you live in NYC, you must come here! You will learn about the wild NYC history and I promise the past stories of this city will resonate with you in some way. The visuals combined with projectors and technology make this a stunning way to take in the history of this city from the 1600s new Amsterdam to today. There are 4 floors full of interesting exhibits, plan on spending the entire day. There is a cafe on the second floor if you need a pick me up. There was a floor with photos of people and food through out nyc history and an eye opening exhibit on activism. There was one on communication, printing press, telephone newspaper and stock market back then when and how they were created. Plus there was a really cool gingerbread house exhibit you have to see!

I've visited twice and it's been amazing both times. The first floor fixed exhibits are super interesting if you're an NYC history geek like me. You can easily spend 4 hours here (including the 40 min intro film, which if definitely worth watching). Most events from the Dutch settling the city to present day are covered. There is lots to read, look at, and interact with, athough I wouldn't say that this museum is super kid-friendly -- it's very information dense. The revolving exhibits are fascinating, and this time there was an 80s NYC music exhibit (Hip Hop, Soul, Electronic) and a super interesting "Analog NYC" section.

When I arrived, I was not sure what to expect. It was great to see the documentary history and items of New York City. How diversity helped shape what New York is now. They had an interactive display that shares the different song that were written by different artist about NY and by borough. They had a film documentary on the third floor that showcased the diversity of New York City in chronicle years order . I enjoyed myself. My husband and I just was walking by and decided to enter. It was spontaneous, with no regrets.

Highly recommend checking out this museum if you have even a fractional in the history of the city of New York. The museum itself is a beautiful building from the 1920s with a glorious marble staircase at its center. The exhibits were all marvelously well put together as well very digestible. There is a great 30 min documentary about the evolution of the city (narrated by Stanley Tucci) that plays in the basement. I highly recommend viewing this as it was very informative! A lot of folks seem to miss this when they visit as despite the museum being busy there were only 4 people in the theater including myself!

We had a great time visiting this museum! Entrance is pay what you can with a recommendation of 20$ per adult and there was a really interesting short film on the history of New York City starting from 1609 to now narrated by Stanley Tucci. There was also an entire floor dedicated to depictions of NYC in movies, music and art. It might not be the best choice for young children but the exhibits provided so much insight into New York and we really enjoyed our time there.

I personally loved visiting the Museum of the City of New York. It’s a small museum, but as a resident, I loved learning about the history of the city on the first floor. Currently my favorite museum in the city. The exhibitions are incredibly thoughtful and interactive shows that invite you into different experience of the city through its infrastructure, objects, and people. It’s both delightful and impactful. I would highly recommend the current exhibit on the systems that support NYC prior to digital technologies. Really lovely artifact-based narrative. This museum should be a must to do in New York. It is really interesting, starting with the film you can already have an overview of the history of the city. Then you can see different types of exhibitions, highlighting not only the history but also the pop culture, social topics including immigration, etc. The movies and the music exhibitions were my favorites. What a hidden gem of a museum! It’s much bigger than it first appears and every inch is interesting. My companion is not a huge fan of museums in general, but chose this one and it was an excellent choice. We learned so much. There was no wait to get in the afternoon we visited and it was a $20 suggested donation. It’s a short walk from the Guggenheim and we combined both into one afternoon. I definitely recommend this one for your next outing.

Highly recommend this museum! It is very engaging and interactive, with lots of interesting exhibits and information about NYC. I recommend starting with the ground floor film (30 minutes), as it provides a great overview of the history and development of the city. On the day we visited the museum (in early August), the air conditioning seemed to be set too low, with very cold temperatures experienced in most parts of the building. Wish we had worn warmer clothes!

Very nicely organized museum to learn about the city. Lots history to read and love that they high lights lots of individuals as well. It was very cool to see the music section as well as the movie section on the 3rd floor. It might look small compared to other museums in the city but three hours wasn't enough for us to get through everything!!! Will definitely come back soon for more! It was a nice 10 minutes walk through Central Park to the museum when you take 2 train from the west side! Highly recommended for both New Yorkers and tourists.

Beautiful exhibits to visit. The inside is absolutely beautiful. I recommend coming here. Really interesting. I liked the Activist Exhibit and the 100th Anniversary exhibit. But the 30-minute movie, Timescapes, included with admission was really my favorite. It's a history of New York using images and maps of the same places at different times. Like the Lower East Side in the 1860s and 1960s. Narrated by Stanley Tucci, I learned a lot!

Born and raised in NY, I've never heard of this museum. I ran across a groupon for it and took my son here while visiting for the holidays. It was amazing! All the history. We happened to be there on a day where a famous hip hop legend was giving a tour there and interacting with the patrons. We had a great time here. I love that my son had fun interacting with the audio/video and the hands on learning tools. What a great experience.

Super interesting place. I came alone and came to learn, which I did. The history of the city is fascinating, and the museum actually does a superb job is presenting that. The building is nice, clean and accessible, and not at all crowded. (I went on a Thursday evening). Also, the gift shop is wild (& made me wish I had more $$$) Would definitely recommend for nerds!

I think I've enjoyed the museum the most because of two things: 1. I love New York 2. Without the city of New York, there was no reason to have a museum, right?! just think about it, what will be the exhibitions about l? what would be the underline that connects all the art work. Of the museum experience I’ve had in NYC I will say this was pretty lackluster. There were good exhibits but it seems like we only got 70% of the museum. It just was not exciting. I learned a little, not more than you can find online. The music history exhibit was pretty cool but overall I will skip it next time.

Hidden gem of vast resources of NY city history, culture and economy. You can review the development of the city, transition, old days tools and equipments and videos. Nice white-colored lounge area on the second floor for eating drinking and study is a plus. Currently ginger bread cookies showcase is ongoing!

Fantastic place! Well prepared exhibitions, which could interest many people - the age doesn’t matter. Everything is clearly presented so you won’t get confused. They have huge collection of beautiful photographs. While visiting be sure you have made it to the movie about the history of the city - it’s great!

If you like new music, fashion culture, MTV in 1980's, you'll get more background knowledge here. History of New York city is presented by projection tech. You might react with projector screen. There is one thing I thought NYC could be better at other topic of exhibitions, such as doll house exhibition. More

If you're looking for an interesting museum in the City, this is it. They have some really cool exhibits. I originally went to see the Puppet exhibit (which unfortunately is now over) but found other gems here. The interior is gorgeous as well! Its a great place to go if you wanna learn about NYC.

I’ve been to NYC multiple times, and this is the only museum in the city that provides you a critical, diverse, and realistic image of the city, with focus on marginalized communities featured in recent exhibitions. Don’t go for tour guides, learn about the city through this museum instead.

I got a free entrance because I visited El Museo del Barrio and I'm so happy I did! I truly enjoyed this museum, it's quite big and the art selection is powerful. The staff is very friendly too :)

A really nice place to visit. Located in Spanish Harlem, the atmosphere is great. Check out some interesting works of art, get some great coffee and food while your at it! Just Across the street from Central Park!

Go on Saturday just before 3pm to meet the best tour guide I’ve ever had. Incredible lady; didn’t get her name. 2 hour tour of museum; experience wouldn’t’ve been the same without her. More

This is a less known, less appreciated museum. It details the history of NYC over the years. I loved watching the movie they show which features how NYC evolved. It was very interesting.

Beautiful museum where you can learn a lot about the city. Really modern and exiting to visit!

A great museum to learn about the history of New York City. It's not as popular as some of the other museums in NYC, but it should be. The exhibits are interesting and engaging.

I really enjoyed the museum. All of the exhibits were very good especially the New York, New Music, Stettheimer Dollhouse, Activist NY and NY at its Core exhibits. More

Very nice museum. We enjoyed the visit. It is not designed for kids, but still there are some visual elements that can help if you go with them.

This is such a great museum, and they offer free military admission too! 100% recommend visiting here! You’ll learn a ton!
