Don’t ever show up to court without legal representation. The court system isn’t set up to help the little man or woman. Even if you are innocent, the judges only care about settling the case and getting your issue off their plate regardless of the cost or how this case might look on your record or if it damages your reputation. They make you go to a conference room in a back beforehand with the other party supervised by an unfriendly police officer. They make assumptions about who you are without looking at facts of the case. I lost by default because I didn’t know about my case until it was too late. I tried to vacate the judgement and tried to find a lawyer to help me do so but it was hard to find one and when I finally did find a lawyer. He said he couldn’t appear on the date I had court for the second time. This court does not care about whatever suffering the other party might have caused you and when you are given no choice but to settle - it is like reliving again the pain caused by the other party. I was told by the judge, “I made a good choice” but how can she know? She didn’t live what I experienced - one simple google search on the plaintiff would have proved I was innocent and that he was the oppressor. He was the man who hides behind his many lawyers and I only a Hispanic woman without a lawyer. It was an expensive lesson to learn and I lost all faith in the legal system and judges. It isn’t about what is who is right or wrong / innocent or guilty - it is about who knows the legal process best to get you off the case. There is no such thing as justice anymore and that was an expensive lesson learn. I’m so glad I move out of New York State. I do have to say the people that work in the offices behind the glass windows. They were very helpful and kind. Especially, if you catch them first thing in the morning. If basic court room education was taught in high schools, people would be more prepared. It is an unfair system for those that don’t have legal representation. What the court room fails to see is that these are real people’s lives and livelihoods.
First, this has been the worst experience in my life. I had to go to Civil Court in Queens. My nightmare started May 7,2018.The first time, I had to file papers for a name change .The woman ask me have I ever claim bankruptcy before . I told her forty years ago. She said I had to go to Bankruptcy Court, in Brooklyn.I went to Bankruptcy Court, they told me they don't keep records past twenty years. I felt they should have known this about the courts records how long they are stored. I came back to the court house and presented her with the paper stating that they have no record of me. Now looking at my papers, the papers needed to be amended by the judge because the name was printed wrong. This was at the beginning of July. They said I had to wait for another couple of weeks due to the holiday. At this point I was outrage with them. But I still had to come back to retrieve the court papers for my name change. Second, the staff was nasty. One woman stated because I told her that she always inconvenience people.Having them run around for nothing. She told me she was not going to wait on me and she didn't. I could have never did that at my job, or with any customers. Now she works for the city. How do people allow this to go on in the work place? Now after all of the inconvenience she put me through she still wouldn't stop harassing me. Now, she has her co-worker waiting on me. She wants me to send in a form to Bankruptcy Court. Just to cost me more money. Because she has the paper from Bankruptcy Court, in her hand stating I have no case.I believe that if more people would write a review on how they were treated by the court system maybe things could change a little.
Had to come here for Jury Duty and I have to say it was actually very organized and everyone was super friendly and professional. Showed up at 9am and went through security with no problem. We were all then ushered into a main holding area where they had us fill out a form and watch a couple of videos. Then they turned on the PRICE IS RIGHT and we all just basically hung out and waited until they called your name. Eventually my name got called and the case I was assigned to was dismissed so my jury duty was over at that point. But again the staff was very professional, very courteous, and I was actually blown away at how well organized everything was. ✅ PRO TIPS: --Your gonna be filling out some stuff when you first arrive so bring a pen and something hard to write on. --Lunch is from 12pm to 1pm but feel free to bring some snacks and/or something to drink --It can get very boring so bring a good book or work to do, chances are you're going to be there for a long time waiting for your name to be called. --Bring an external battery charger for your phone. I didn't see too many outlets in the holding area (I'm sure they're there) but if you're gonna be on your phone a lot, you'll be better off bringing an external battery charger for your phone.
Unfair judge during the daytime court & judicial system! *Judgement went to defendant due to their name being on claim instead of the corporation's name which is stupid because the person was the owner of the company. **The defendant continuous use of cell phone with warnings instead of confiscating it & allowing the defendant to make numerous outburst without taking steps to remove from Court was unacceptable & outrageous. Let a person of color do it and they would not have a phone nor continue with civil case. ***The defendant yelled out an insult while leaving and court officer was informed. There was nothing done because the court officer said they didn't witness it. White privilege is amazing! Total waste of time & money... I did not get the amount I sued for after 3 different trips to this court via L.I.R.R & Uber. I cannot replace nor fix my damage property with the judgement rendered.
Whom ever the civil court clerk is that's working on Thursday December 6th 2018 at 16:46 picked up the phone said hello didn't wait a millisecond and hung up on me. When I called back the same woman picked up and I told her she hung up me and had an attitude with me because I told her she hung up on me then acted like she couldn't hear me again and told me she couldn't hear that I should call back and hung up on me again. It's all cool she is employed by the government but that's no way to act and or behave when all I called for was a simple cut off time for appeals. Even "Angels" fell from heaven if she's on a high horse.
I recently visited Queens County Civil Court and had an exceptional experience. The judges were highly competent, displaying deep knowledge of the law and fair judgment. The staff was accommodating and courteous, providing guidance and assistance throughout my visit. Additionally, the guards were effective in maintaining a secure and orderly environment. Overall, Queens County Civil Court impressively upholds professionalism, ensuring justice is served in a welcoming and efficient manner. I highly recommend this court for anyone seeking a civil legal resolution in Queens County.
I personally had a very positive experience. It was my very first time serving. Everything was very organized , we watched good movies and had long break. We were allowed to get coffee as well from cross the street. Waiting room has computers, tables , books.. you can use your phone as well. I was not picked and left at 3:10pm. Police officers were very friendly, helpful and funny, someways. They prepared us for a long day and in the end it was not that long. Thank you!
This is where you report for jury duty in Queens county, so the early morning line is out the door snake like from the metal detectors, once inside there's housing court, various help desks and the minutiae that courts perform. The supermarket across the street has a salad bar and wraps for lunch and there's a Starbucks on the corner. Lots of other eats and a riteaid for headache stuff. Everything in a 2 block radius...
Administrative staff was very helpful on the phone before and after filing, and they were very helpful when I filed at the Courthouse. The Judge listened to my position, observed my photos, video and document stating value of damage/loss, then subsequently made a fair ruling based on the facts. The Small Claims website is very informative. Democracy in action: of the people, for the people and by the people!
Have been to this court various times for Jury duty. It's location is great, near F train and has so many good restaurants within waking distances. The security process is also very easy and friendly. The guards have been super nice to me everytime i go. One time i didnt know the room i needed to go, the officer walked me 2 flights to the room i needed to go for jury duty. Its also very well maintained.
First floor, record department is AMAZING. So helpful, so kind. The third floor name change department, however, has gone out of their way to select the most mediocre and downright unhelpful people possible. And don’t show up during their (completely arbitrary) lunch hour. Nobody will be at the window and you’ll just have to wait until they’re done with their collective burritos.
Very corrupt and unfair Court. The judge didn't let us speak in 2002 (we were the Plaintiff) and the 10 HPD house violations found were finally om verified 13 years later in 2015 for appropriate repairs. My mom died from cancer and exposure to mold, electrical malfunction, lead, asbestos and she had to paint the bathroom. 2 rs before her death. Terrible experience
Pleasantly surprised! Was called for jury duty. Everything was extremely organized and all the staff I met were helpful and efficient. I don’t write glowing reviews often. I was dreading jury duty but was not called and we were let go early and received credit. Seemed like a very organized court.
Very hard to change name. Obscure requirements not listed on website. Unfriendly. Very bureaucratic. An example, my wife forgot to circle yes but they refused to let me circle for her. I had to bring form home and come back again. Not clear why rules are not clearly shown on city website
The Help Center Room 235 is a disgrace. The two male window employees are very nasty and miserable all the time. The lazy eye guy doesn’t even make a little effort to help but just want to get rid of you right away. If you don’t like your job and you hate people, please just resign.
In room 357 there's a couple of ladies that have bad attitudes. You ask a question and they answer like your annoying them. A question is never stupid if your not sure.Too bad this is your job and be grateful you have one. You don't need a degree to do what you do!
Staff is friendly and helpful, website is very informative, and place is kept to standard. I went to the small claims section, room 116 and room 357 for civil claim section, both sections had helpful staff and guided me properly when it came to filing my claim.
Very hard to change name! I have a newborn baby and have to come more than 10 times and still waiting! The process go on almost 5 months!!!!The staff is rude, impolite and slow! The clerk purposefully tightens the process! Absolutely inhuman and arrogant!
today is my 3rd time visiting hear for court order for name change it is more than 2 and 1/2 months. when i asked her to check my status she was very rude with me very very sadly experienced from hear
Very helpful and varieties language interpreter available also helping desk very nice to assist you without any reason. Also gov help agency ready to help you all the time, but subject to qualified.
Been waiting for 15 minutes to file a name change with nobody at the window, while the employees are ignoring me standing here. And I am the only one here online and yes they are open when I asked.
BEVERLY FROM JUDGE UNGER is truly amazing shes very helpful answer every time i call, polite never mad when i am asking questions, she went above and beyond to help me on a case i were working on.
I was here once for Jury Duty and it was very well organized. I would love to come back here again for my next Jury Duty. The area looks so beautiful, neat & clean with this building.
The judge and all the staff at this court are so caring . They have empathy for the public who are trying to pay their rent and getting help for repairs etc from The landlords.
A recently-built building that lacks a cafeteria or coffee shop. But the people who work in the courthouse is pretty courteous. The courtrooms are easily to find as well.
Room 147 document office extremely helpful and efficient, within 1 min I had what I needed, only wait is 10 min going through metal detectors.
The judge was fair and understanding in his judgement. The overall administration staff and court officials were Courteous and helpful.
Workers aren't nice and helpful...Don't have any idea what they are doing or need it...For my son name change making too much problem
Super friendly & helpful staff & Court Officers. Arrived early for Jury Duty & was seated well before 9AM.
