The national Museum has SO much potential. As a history teacher I was underwhelmed, happy and low key embarassed by the place all at once. On a positive note impressed by their early man exhibition. Its a bit awkward have the U.S embassy bombing memorial in the complex as important as it is. It felt out of place at our national museum. An appropriate place for it would be the actual location of the former embassy. The staff at the museum are pretty rude and unprofessional which is not surprising for Dar. So dont expect qualified staff to help with you with anything. They seem like they’d rather be unemployed. The vehicle exhibition needs to be indoors as the salty ocean air is deteriorating the cars massively. I was horrified to say the least as those cars have incredible national value let alone a heafty price tag. The old museum building is one of my favorite buildings in the country was sad to see it in a state of neglect despite the Turks sponsoring its maintanance. This museum is suppose to be a relfection of how far we have come as a nation. And hope the government will prioritize and hire qualified designers and curators to bring this glorious place to its greatness. There are many qualofied Tanzanians that would help make this place a place of institutional memory and a reflection of the past to inspire future. My five stars are for the potential this great place has.

We wanted to use our time im Dar es Salaam and learn more about history of Tanzania, but this museum is huge disappointment!!! Lady at the entrance said that entrance is 12000 Tzs, when we said 2 tickets. Price was suddenly 25000 Tzs. On question why she said it is goverment tax. When we demanded to pay on the card, first she said that price of tickets is than back without the goverment tax. But than, she said machine is not working and clearly it was working since locals in front of us paid it with the card and machine was ready. If we would pay with the mobile phone than the price would again back to normal. It is not problem in 1000 Tzs but this is clear stealing money and corruption. Lady from the souvenir shop heard everything. First she was on the side of the staff but when we explained what happend and said that we are tourists who are really willing to see something new and spent some money im the shop, she understood what is going on. so she started to fight about this situation with the entrance staff as well and stood on our side. This museum staff is HUGE SHAME!!! Yes, we are tourists but we are not idiots. *Collection itself we can not judge since after this situation we didin't even want to enter and see anything. Watch out for this scam!!

This is the worst museum I've ever been to. More than 2/3rds of it is empty. I don't know if they are renovating it but they should either close it or charge nothing. It costs $6 and they say they will only accept card payments. The few rooms that you can browse have small digital prints of President Nyerere meeting with African politicians in the 1960s with no real explanations about the significance and letters he wrote to President John F. Kennedy that are full of grammatical and wording issues. This is supposed to be the museum of culture and there is only one small room of bad, contemporary paintings. Local art shops have better works. There is a small hall about early human evolution and fossils but there are almost no bones or fossils shown. Don't bother going here. Tanzania is so rich in history and culture. They could have had an exhibit of the tribal clothing traditions throughout the country or the dark history of colonialism and independence but there is really no history or culture worth seeing here. I saw everything in less than an hour and wanted my money back at the end.

I was not sure what to expect but surprisingly, I had a wonderful time. It is a lot of cut outs but if you take one of the guides they offer (for a small extra fee of course), you will have a good time. I did not use the guide as I always feel rushed when I use them but I still had a good time getting glimpses of the history! There was an interior home sapien exhibit going on that I thought was interesting and could be fun for kids. The people were very welcoming and the only time I got a little frustrated was when the guard kept asking me for a ticket but I had paid cash and did not have one. I was just frustrated because I wanted to enjoy the exhibit without interruptions. He did invite me to join him for lunch which I respectfully declined as I was not quite hungry yet. All in all a very good local activity to enjoy and relax. Hopefully they get more art to showcase as some areas are still in renovation and some rooms were pretty empty. Buying tickets was easy. If paying in USD it costs about $6 and in Tanzanian shillings about TSHS 13000

Interesting museum, with artifacts from pre-historic times as well as different periods from about 1000ad up to 1999. The museum looks at Kilwa, colonial history, independence, and then the Nyerere years. Most of the artifacts from the past 100 years are photos. Again, most of them focus on Nyerere. Lots of random photos from the pan-Africanist/liberation era. A few mentions of the Kagera war. It would be interesting to talk about Mkapa and Mwinyi. It would be interesting to frame different eras of the nation's history and what was going on around the country. Almost no mention of the over 120 ethnic groups and their cultures. Very little explanation of Ujamaa or evaluation of it. No discussions of the different development accomplishments, or of agriculture. It's a narrow focus. It is what is important to many, but overlooks so many aspects of history and culture in Tanzania.

I must admit it was a bit embarrassing to visit the museum with a friend who was visiting ( local charges are 2500 foreigners 12,500, they take mobile money when we visited their network was down so they charged us an extra 1000!) The only note worthy exhibit was the cradle of man however most places lakes proper explanations the staff were quite unfriendly and plain rude it felt as though they were there against their wishes. There were lots of cobwebs and dust around most display cabinets. In some places it was really hot even the fans were switched off. In other exhibits there was a repetition of pictures. The museum is filled with newspaper clippings and pictures which can easily be viewed for free on Google. There is alot of maintainance work going on and hopefully that will bring some positive changes. It's a shame that we are a country filled with history and culture and yet our museum is in the state that it is

A fascinating museum to spend an hour or two if looking to escape the heat or the rain. I found the staff to be extremely friendly and personable, which was pleasant. The exhibits are interesting and the information cards are very descriptive and well written in English. During our visit, I noted another guest who was visiting with a guide, however, I found that the written information provided was more than sufficient, allowing you to go as fast or as slow as you want. The main exhibit was nice, and I enjoyed the contemporary art exhibit as well, though the rest appeared to be crudely displayed with old discoloured photos and more of an afterthought to fill the space.

This museum is okay. The exhibition of Tanzania’s history is informative and interesting enough but fails to explain anything about the nation's many tribes and clearly hasn’t been updated in 15+ years. The contemporary art collection is more disappointing as it’s neither diverse nor contemporary. The pre-history exhibit on archaeology is quite nice as it was provided by Spain, not the Tanzanian government. The site is also the location of the US embassy bombing memorial, just created in 2018. The memorial is very good and can be seen without paying the $6 museum fee (cards or mobile only, no cash accepted). Overall, worth an hour and a half of your time.

If you want to get out of the rain or the heat, spend an hour or two in this fascinating museum. It was nice to deal with staff that was so amiable and helpful. The information cards are written in an excellent and informative English, and the displays are fascinating. Although I saw one other visitor who was accompanied by a tour while we were there, I thought the printed material was more than adequate and let us explore at our own pace. The modern art exhibit and the main exhibit were both good. Purchasing tickets was simple. It costs roughly $6 in USD and roughly TSHS 13000 in Tanzanian Shillings.

Payment is done via mobile banking. I had to leave to deposit money to Tigo pesa (just opposite at IFM University) then come back. I am happy that it only costs 2500 for East Africans to get admission. I would have learned even more about the history of Tangayika (Tanzania) with a guide. I am even happier that during my visit I stumbled upon an exhibit of contemporary art by Kuwait. I definitely recommend a visit (ask for a guide)

I have visited the national museum, it's a cool place where you get to see historical things. Me and my friend really liked there and hopefully other friends gonna come visit. I liked the colonial cars which were being used, Royce Louise and the remaining skull of the elephant, the chief materials, the rock area and the place where you roll something for a bingo maybe and slavery history. Everything was lit, they have cool receptionist. You can see it on the photos. Thank you

  • Hansjoerg Rempen

Insgesamt informativ.

I was not happy with the lady at the reception, condescending and not really assisting. The card machine was not working and we suggested cash but she said she'd need more since she'd pay with her phone. The expo was nice and straight forward, photos told a story. A bit too small of a tour, can easily be done in an hour, if not less.

This is a really well made museum of Tanzanian history. In particular, the section about how modern human life came into existence is very interesting to read. The rest of the national history is displayed more briefly, however, still well done. I do recommend looking at it.

The museum is kind of small, and only covers the history of the country. The most important exhibition is the one focusing on paleontology and early archeology in the Olduvai Gorge. The colonial exhibition as well as the selection of contemporary Tanzanian art are educative, but largely superfluous. Still, good value for money since the entrance fee is 12.000 TSh.

  • BW SAMPSON

The museum was thoroughly enjoyed by myself, and all of the exhibits were exquisite. The only thing that saddened me , was the fact that I didn't get the chance to spend a larger portion of time there, since I was traveling with a group

I am not so satisfied after visit in National Museum. I was interested in the exhibition of the art and history of slavery. I lacked information about the Swahili culture and the history of building the country. Lots of information about Julius Neyere's activities and history. Old fashioned museum Price: Ticket 12 000 TZS for foreigner

Should visit at least one time if you are visiting Dar. Good experience! Lot of fossils and skull where displayed. Ivory, trades, savory and pictorial representation or pre and post independence era... But some items are open anybody can touch even make damage.. Looks like lack of ground staff. More than that it is a peaceful place..

  • Lee

An ok place to spend an hour or two but there wasn't as much on display as I'd hoped. A lot of the rooms had empty display boxes. Maybe it's being refurbished but I couldn't see any information about it.

The National Museum of Tanzania located within Dar Es Salam where you can learn about TZ history and culture. If you love old cars, there is a selection of former presidents cars there. No need to hire a guide. You can bi card for the visit fees, they a have an very interesting souvenir shop.

Museum describing the history of what today is Tanzania. From prehistoric times up to modern days, a lot of information is provided and many historical items are on displace. There is also a memorial dedicated to those wounded and killed in the 1998 Kenya/Tanzania embassy bombings.

Unfortunately there was a lot under construction. And there is no real round-trip shown... just the people were very kind and helpful, this is why I still rate 3 stars
