A great place to visit as a history lesson for both youth and elders! For elders, they can reminisce an Era of sports that was unmatched. For youth, it's homage to the sport of baseball that they know today. There's a lot to unpack when visiting this museum. From the 15-minute video documentary, to the life-sized statues of the players, and all of the artifacts that are exhibited. You're able to learn so much about the Negro Leagues. If you plan on taking pictures in the museum, please make sure that you have a full battery. I took a ton of pictures and caught video of the museum & my phone died halfway through the place. It is THAT much information inside. This venue shares space with the Jazz Museum. If you have time, you can visit both museums. Also, the entrance for adults is relatively cheap: $10

VISITED July 18, 2023 If you are a baseball fan and enjoy learning history such as Negro ball players that contributed to the game of baseball, this museum is a must. You will need a good couple of hours to go through this small museum. There is so much to see and read from the beginning as early as the 1920's. If you are an empathetic person such as me, you will have some emotional moments reading what these pioneers of negro baseball endured. But they paved the path for the negro ball players that play today. The exhibits were quite informative and visually pleasing throughtout. From start to finish, you won't get bored. At the end you get to be apart of the negro ball field with replica statues of these legendary ball players. Overall: You must visit while in Kansas City!

I went there for a special event that includes being able to walk through the full museum. It is such a gem of a place! I felt like I learned so much about Kansas City that I hadn't known before, not to mention all the crazy baseball facts. My favorite part was all of the historic jerseys on display. Looking at the stitching and the fabrics and the pictures of the men who would have worn them... Man it made it so real and personal. The staff was warm and professional. You can tell they love what they do! It isn't a huge museum, but there is a lot in there! If you take your time and read everything/check every display it could easily take a full afternoon. If you just want a quick skim (more of what I did) you could do it in about an hour and still come away with a deeper understanding of the history. Definitely worth a visit!!

Wonderful place to appreciate the contributions and conditions that great players had to face. Sad that museum was smaller than I expected with less artifacts. Video displays were very dated and wish more people would contribute to modernize, which is sorely needed. The Era and the people should never be lost to time...we should all support the museum and make it the deserving showcase it should be for the other half of America's Pastime. (Would be great to also find a way to expand it a little to include Latinos, Women, and other cultures who were involved as well)

Professionally done. When you go inside it's as if you are still outside before you enter ( brick exterior) You are then taken into a time machine and chronologically walk through the Negro league story by old posters, artifacts, short movies, props, a mini baseball field, actual seats, life sized mannequins, and how nationally impactful the Negro Leagues and the Monarchs were to the modern sport of baseball. It's as if you lived back then. Your self guided tour exits through the gift shop. A must see venue that isco- located with the mini theater that tells the 18th and Vine Story and also the Jazz museum. This place has captured this particular Era in Kansas City; the Harlem Renaissance of the Midwest.

This small museum has a lot to offer. There is a ton of information on the history of the league and many of the players. There is also a running timeline of real history to give everything a sense of place. There is a strong Kansas City connection, with a large number of players coming up through the roster of the Kansas City Monarchs. There are a couple of vignettes and a nice collection of equipment, jerseys, and caps. The exhibits circle a life size replica of a playing field with bronze statues of players. At the beginning of the tour there is a really wonderful short overview film narrated by James Earl Jones. If you follow baseball at all, this is a must see. Really well done facility.

This is a terrific experience, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a big baseball fan. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The museum shares a building with the Jazz Museum, and you can buy a ticket to see both for I believe $20 per person (typical price is $15 for one, I think). I spent about 1.5-2 hours walking around the museum, though I'm sure you could do it faster. There is a great collection of memorabilia, and the museum does a great job of contextualizing the history of the Negro Leagues. There's also a good movie near the front of the museum - it runs 15 minutes and 45 minutes past the hour, and runs about 16 minutes. Recommend seeing it. Great, reasonably priced gift shop as well.

Bit dated but awesome! One of the best museums I have ever visited and I have visited all Smithsonian and 100s of state and local ones. Interpretation and storyline on point. Negro league baseball history is explained with a timeline related to race relations and law in the US frames the narrative. Understanding the league within the larger framework of US history is important for understanding. The end product Brings 2 narratives to light with out preaching - negro league baseball was something to be celebrated from a social, economic and sporting perspective and the brutal reality of racism on the US. If you love baseball, it's a must.. If you love America and democracy, this place shows how great and how bad we can be at the same time. Loved it.

Honestly I was a little disappointed. The way the museum is set up is a little strange. There is a little theatre at the beginning where you can see a 15 minute movie. A rush of people leave the theatre into the first exhibits and there is absolutely nowhere to move. I felt like I was stuck in the same spot for 10 minutes. Perhaps it was because the Cardinals were in town so there were more people than normal, but still. The overall museum was pretty interesting. There was jersey display area of different players, which was neat except for the fact that the jerseys were just replicas, and not the actual game worn jerseys.

My family and I enjoyed ourselves at the negro league baseball museum. It was good to learn about the history of the negro league. The beginning of the museum tour has you watch an introductory video probably 20min or so . Then you walk through the museum with artifacts, pieces and lots of things to read about the history. It ends on the indoor baseball field where kids can run the bases and take pictures next to statues of some of the greats who played in the negro league. It was a great experience. I would recommend everyone to visit when in Kansas City.

In K.C. Monarch country you’ll learn the origins of the Negro Leagues of baseball. I recommend scheduling a guided tour. In this museum I learned how some of the Negro leagues we’re started and who was involved with the process. Here I also learned the various things that affected the league. There’s too much to type for a review but it’s definitely worth the 10 bucks of admission. I went on a Tuesday morning and it wasn’t crowded. The gift shop had some nice Negro League apparel (jerseys, jackets, t-shirts, hats).

The staff was rude and unhelpful, but the self guided tour was informative. The two ladies working cut off the lights while patrons were still viewing the exhibit. I literally had to find my way out of there only to discover the two employees at the door saying they were closed. This was after tickets have been purchased, and we were in the middle of the tour. When we asked the ladies why an announcement wasn’t made or something of the sort to let us know they were closing we got attitude. And several patrons were left finding their way through the dark to get out. But other than that, the part that I actually got to see, I enjoyed.

Longtime Baseball fan but this was a new experience for me. So grateful for the people who made this museum a reality. We started by watching the intro video (sit in bleachers which was a neat touch). Then spent rest of time reading all the tidbits and history. So many mementos, photos, uniforms, clippings and quotes. Bleachers from original stadiums also are on site. The final stop is a miniature infield with bronze statues, very cool to stand with Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson! Highly recommend you stop in and visit this gem. Included in the building is the American Jazz museum and also history area of 18th & Vine.

Very nice museum that everyone should visit. There was a wonderful combination of information (video/pictures/stories/etc), historical memorabilia (gold gloves, baseballs, seats, etc) and then life-sized statues. It was relatively inexpensive and if you wanted to you could power through here in 30-45 minutes or you could spend hours reading, looking and soaking in everything that they have to offer. For us, we enjoyed it and will gladly go back again to spend more time taking all that is available.

Great little museum with lots of history. You can quickly browse through the museum or if you’re like me, you can spend a whole day here as there is a lot of artifacts and facts to read through. There’s also a theatre that plays a quick 10 minute film and there’s other sections of the museum with video clips. If you’re in KC I definitely recommend you add this to your list of places to visit and tickets are very affordable. The lovely gentleman who greeted me as I walked in was so nice and explained everything to me. I’m glad I stopped by and if I’m ever in KC I’ll stop by again.

We were visiting Kansas City and St. Louis for some baseball games and stopped in to check out the museum—it was fantastic. It was small, but really the perfect size. It took us about an hour to go through at most. It was filled with a lot of memorabilia and facts, and even a small baseball field with historical players, which I loved. I’m glad we stopped in to see it. It’s also next door to the Jazz museum and you could purchase tickets to see both, or one or the other.

We have visited a variety of civil rights history museums and historic sites. This museum offers another perspective on the Black experience in America. My partner is an avid baseball fan. The museum is well laid out and offers up its story with pictures and a variety of multi-media displays. You end up on a baseball diamond populated with life size statues of Negro Leagues all-stars. And they also pay homage to female pioneers in baseball.

Our guide Bob kept things very interesting with his stories and added so much depth. Went here with my wife while visiting Kansas City. I enjoyed it a lot. Inexpensive and well-worth any baseball enthusiast's time. Admittedly, the layout of the museum was not great for following a tour. The guide was a phenomenal story teller and fantastic primary resource, but the layout made it difficult to place his narrative in the context of the artifacts. The artifacts, statues, and paintings/art work were great. Probably not the best place to bring small children.

A great museum that really brings to life a period of history long forgotten or ignored by many fans of the past. Like Cooperstown or Wrigley, this is a must visit for all baseball fans in their life. Those that are more casual fans will learn a lot, while more knowledgable veterans will still appreciate the artifacts and deep cut info. I’m excited to see the museum grow.

What a great way to spend a few hours. This place was great...love the history, even though the subject matter is far from awesome....seriously...any baseball fan needs to put this on their bucket list. There were some typos in some of the sinage, which was a little annoying, but it doesn't take away from the information. It was pretty hot in the museum, so take that into consideration, but the staff was nice and helpful, it was clean, and only $10!

It’s free during the month of February for Black History Month, so it was very crowded, but there were no Karen’s or impatient people. There’s a lot of history and a lot to read and see. We spent a couple hours in there. It is definitely worth it if you’re a baseball fan, even if you’re not it’s so much history that is unknown to many and unspoken, so to take the time and moment to learn about it is worth the time. Enjoy!

Great place with great history artifacts to back it up. The staff was very friendly and met the director! This place truly is a one of a kind place. Upkeep of Facility was spot on and the merchandise in there shop is hard to find at a better price. Me and my family really learned alot and had a great time was originally in town for a football game originally from Florida felt like since I was in town I had to come see the place. I'm glad I did!!

What a wonderful tribute to the men and women who played in the Negro Leagues—and made the league possible. My son and I enjoyed learning more about our favorite players—and meeting new ones such as Mamie "Peanut" Johnson. We had a great time, and I look forward to a return visit the next time we're in Kansas City.

I’m an avid baseball fan. Loved the concept of this museum. It’s in the same building as the Jazz museum and the combo tickets is a steal ($30 for 2 tickets to both museums). Great exhibits and loved the content however the layout leaves you feeling rushed and cramped. Just when I got into a section I had 2-3 people looking at the same thing. Maybe changing the flow to allow a better experience would help.

A MUST See if you’re in Kansas City. So much history-this Museum reflects how much MLB ignored the accomplishments of these players; many of their records still stand. Satchel Page, Cool Papa Bell, Jackie Robinson- know these names. Buy a membership and support this American treasure!

It is a great place to go and learn about this part of our history. A lot of pictures, descriptions, artifacts, and educational films throughout. I stopped and red the majority of items and watched the films, and it took about 2 hours to go through. Tickets purchased in the baseball gift shop. If you plan on going to the jazz museum as well take your recipt to the jazz gift shop for $2 off that ticket.

Outstanding museum! Great displays and so much good history we enjoyed it and we will recommend it to others. This was our first time here and we took out of town guests who had never been as well. So glad we did this. Got our tickets on Groupon and saved O much money.

Equality demands this museum and the reality that our country's failure to desegregation kept us from the best baseball we could love. Obviously our country, in all its capacity, would have been better with desegregation beyond baseball. This museum highlights amazing players who's names we know today. They were instrumental and historical players who changes America and baseball.

Good place to learn about not only Black history but "American" history. The museum doesnt only provide details that are sports related, they also provide details of certain economic issues the country was facing back in the day. I highly recommend you bring a good camera and take time to read the details provided. Just don't walk thru the museum, learn as you walk.

If you read the website, it suggests 60-90 minutes to see everything. Due to scheduling, I only had an hour and it definitely wasn't enough. There's a LOT to see, read, and experience and it is well worth the $10 admission! Wish I'd also known it was in the same building with the American Jazz Museum, as I'd have wanted to plan more time to see both!

Every time I go back home to Kansas and visit me and my husband, come here, it's one of our favorite places to go. Very nice, a lot of black history. Staff is always nice and very helpful. I would definitely recommend it.

My visit was such a great experience. Satchel Paige was a legend even when i was a kid, so to see so much information about him in his town was a stroke of fortune. All the greats are here, and the staff was so nice. I’d recommend having a couple hours set aside to attend. Admission was very affordable.

Great place to learn about the history and integration of the game. It will take you about an hour to peruse if you're interested. Be sure to watch the film when you first walk in.

This place is hollowed grounds for the many voices that never had a chance to be recognized. It’s always an amazing day to walk through the doors even more amazing having the opportunity to cater an event for my friends at Lula. Make sure to check out this is truly and American treasure.

So much history and everything is packed really tight together. The first time you go through this, it leaves you speechless. I think I will need to go many times in order to absorb the content this museum holds.

A lot of great history here to understand. Also enjoy any film, clip, e.t.c that is narrated by the great Earl Jones. Also snagged some awesome gear in the gift shop! Fun area with some great pic opportunities.

Beautiful museum for our heritage! So many interesting historical heros. I love the baseball field with famous player bronze statues. So much pride for those that came before me trailblazing for my children.

Historic Pride! Everyone at the museum helps talk and walk you through different exhibits. Encourage everyone to visit and see a piece of America rarely discussed or appreciated.

A beautiful place to visit while in KC. A lot of history here and it will bring you back. I love this place, would love to bring my family here one day. They really have it going on here and nice video.

Very interesting museum. Cool exhibits. I like that they didn't hold back when telling the stories. People NEED to see that stuff and remember where we came from so history doesn't repeat itself. More

Amazing museum, especially if you love baseball and social issues. Curators have done a fantastic job of organizing information and displaying memorobaikia. The video at the beginning is excellent.

Such a great history. We really missed out on some exciting talent because of segregation. A very thorough collection. You need to go through it at least 2 or 3 times.

We happened to catch the tour with the Houston Astros. The guide was very knowledgeable. The exhibit was educational. A lot of thought went into the collection and displays. More

Outstanding history with incredible displays and memorabilia. Can't miss this if you're a baseball fan. Street parking was available close by when we visited. More

Nice to visit one of the greatest and saddest times in our American history. Highly recommend visiting for one of the most confusing times in America.

Thank you Buck O Neil for this wonderful museum. I'm a Clevelander, so I especially liked the Cleveland Buckeyes and Satchel Paige stuff!

It was great. I hope to purchase a pass, so when out of towers visit, we an immerse ourselves in the beginnings of America's pastime!

Kansas City gem! And you just might get a chance to meet Kansas City's best storyteller, Bob Kendrick.
