"It's actually a great little gym"
"As for weight /strength training, the gym offers good range of equipment and accessories including dipping, weight belt and biceps harness (l seldom see them)"
"Newtown is my favourite gym to train at, for 2 main reasons: the friendly and accomodating staff and the clean facility! I have visited many gyms and Newtown is by far the cleanest"
"Super impressed with this place"
"I have been a member of The Newtown Gym for many years and continue to renew my membership for the following reasons, the gym is centrally located with up to date equipment and many professional and varied classes but probably mostly because the staff and management are friendly and helpful and always seem to always have the members best interests at heart i"
It's actually a great little gym. They don't market all the equipment they have in the weights room too well. I was surprised when i came to visit. For anyone interested: There are squat racks, benches (inc/dec/fl), approximately 5 olympic bars with plenty of weight plates. 3 smith machines. Dumbells upto 60kg (i think), cable machines with a huge variety of attachments, mobile benches of all shapes and sizes. All of the usual machines including some real niche machines like pullovers, weighted crunches and a glute kickback machine. The gym could do with a dedicated deadlift space or olympic lifting platforms. There's heaps of stuff ive missed so please do take a visit. The down side is that some of the equipment is a little dated. Most of the machines are pin loaded and quite easy to max out. And some of them have that funky 90s feel. The gym lacks a few mod-cons that other Sydney gyms offer. But the prices are super competitive so i dont really mind. I would not recommend this gym if you are a competitive powerlifter or weight lifter. (I do not think this is really their demographic anyway) I would recommend this gym if you are serious about getting fitter and stronger and are sick of overpriced, wanky, lock-in contracts at the other local gyms. Where you fight some roided up Gremlin for five minutes to get a bench. People at Newtown gym, including staff are all pretty chilled.
As for weight /strength training, the gym offers good range of equipment and accessories including dipping, weight belt and biceps harness (l seldom see them). Although machine area and free weights is not big with rather tight machine arrangements, they seem overall very well maintained despite of its age. 4 bench press seats, 2 squat racks, 2 Smith machines. Plates and dumbbells are always in its default place. Never scattered like FF. One big disappointment about this place is shower/locker/toilet. They are almost in neglected /overlooked status like youth hostel's shared facilities, way over due for renovation. I've seen the gym in Town Hall polar opposite with posh common room decor and amenities (please refer to my gym review for it). How interesting it defines and gives completely different image of its gym. After all it's a good old retro gym in Newtown. Staff are all friendly and easy to chat.
Newtown is my favourite gym to train at, for 2 main reasons: the friendly and accomodating staff and the clean facility! I have visited many gyms and Newtown is by far the cleanest. In addition, I find the layout of the gym, especially the strength equipment, set up particularly well - it just makes sense - and I really like the “old school” equipment (which is very well maintained - I don’t think I’ve ever seen an out of order sign). They have an additional functional training area upstairs which I love using for my own HIIT sessions and also a Mind/Body studio (dimmed lights included) for when I practice Pilates or Yoga. For a female who predominantly likes to lift weights, the environment I train in is very important to me. I feel safe training at Newtown gym any time of the day or night. Thank you to the team at Newtown Gym for fostering such a supportive and friendly community.
Super impressed with this place. It just seems to have a really friendly vibe - think locals of all shapes, ages and sizes versus some gyms with loads of super fit weight-training model-gym junkies (not anything wrong with that) I just love the down to earth feel this place has. The staff seemed nice and although I have minimum experience with the gym: Felicity (I think that's her name) was so lovely, consultative, friendly and overall indicative of what makes this place so nice. She was super knowledgable and happily showed me around all the varied components of the gym. Would definitely recommend and when I'm in Sydney long enough - will be back! :)
I have been a member of The Newtown Gym for many years and continue to renew my membership for the following reasons, the gym is centrally located with up to date equipment and many professional and varied classes but probably mostly because the staff and management are friendly and helpful and always seem to always have the members best interests at heart i.e. you ask for something or make a suggestion and they actually listen to you and many of the requests are implemented. If your looking for a gym with a friendly professional, fitness focussed atmosphere then I highly recommend The Newtown Gym.
After having about 3 years off from the gym and being daunted by the thought of going back, I decided to join Newtown gym. I've always been one of those people that join and never go.. but Newtown gym has such a great vibe I actually enjoy being there and look forward to going. The staff make this place so friendly and less daunting for a new starter. I started the HIIT classes and I think they are great as even if there's just a few doing it the classes still go ahead. I can't fault this place or the staff, they all work so hard and i can honestly say it's the best gym I've been to! :)
I'm the discerning gym-goer, and I love Newtown Gym. It's where the true Newtown locals go. The staff are down to earth, unfortunately Jeremy is no longer there, he was a superstar. I think there was a change of ownership recently, and they have done well to modernise it and give it a nice spruce up. Price-wise, I like that the memberships are simple and affordable. Newtown gym are much better than fitness first Newtown who play cheesy pop music and have pushy sales staff.
A gem of an inner-city gym - suitable for anyone of any age, size, gender identity, and/or fitness level, it’s the most comfortable I’ve felt at any gym, and at any fitness/training level. All spaces/zones allow ample space for members - regardless of the time of day I visit, I’ve never had an issue with waiting for a machine. The staff are helpful and compassionate, and the location is easily accessible via public transport.
Great Gym, Culture and Community - A huge amount of space and variety of equipment that is well maintained and often refreshed - a great facility and a fair and reasonable membership. In addition, I couldn't recommend Mark more highly as a PT - exceptionally knowledgeable with injury and injury management and a real game-changer for my training, mobility, strength and overall wellbeing. Thanks Mark, Chris and Team!
It's an old gym and needs some refurbishing. The staff is mostly friendly and the owner is really the best one of the staff no doubts. There's a fun mix of old slags and young spunks and full of lesbians and gay guys. Not that I mind but on the occasion there's some activity in the showers which I not particularly like. Also it's above a restaurant and the smells filter inside making your really hungry afterwards.
I have been going to Newtown Gym for 15yrs & I can't imagine ever moving to another gym. It is the people that make this place so unique and special. I've formed some incredible relationships through this gym which I don't believe is possible through many gyms...I've also managed to get super fit!! If you're seeking a variety of exercise opportunities in a warm environment then look no further
I have been with Newtown Gym for 4 years and it is like no other gym I have ever been to. Staff and members alike are genuine, kind people - it is a true community with people from all walks of life. Whether you're squatting 160kg, getting your cardio in or doing one of the classes, you will feel comfortable here! Chris, Felicity and the team have created something really special.
A great community space where I was always welcomed with a smiling friendly familiar face and didn’t feel intimidated by gym sharks or muscle heads! Classes were challenging but accessible to all levels of fitness & always fun. Newtown Gym is really a gym for the locals with a real sense of inclusivity & community which I miss now that I’ve moved up the coast!
I love this gym, and I’m not a gym person. Super friendly, diverse & inclusive and welcoming, and they have excelled on meeting COVID safety standards. Melissa & Jordan are excellent instructors. This is a well equipped community gym, not a Fitness First that caters for pretty young things only. And… it was where AC/DC used to rehearse in their early days.
Unfortunately not the gym for me, need to update some of the equipment & the plates are looking worn. Highly suggest new squat racks too. If you like using machines & classes then this may be the place for you. The staff were friendly & it is a relatively clean gym however it just needs a revamp. It feels & looks old compared to the gyms I have been to.
This gym is a time capsule! The equipment is old school (which means it's the good stuff; never breaks always pumping). The staff are 100% genuine and non-sales-pushy. The music is never too loud and it's very affordable. Highly recommend it! I'm also an ex FF member; and if your thinking of converting don't waste time you won't regret it!
Newtown Gym is awesome, easily the friendliest gym in the area. The recent revamp has really opened the place up and it feels like members are doing more different sorts of training. The range of classes has also been expanded, with some tougher sessions alongside the existing offerings. Definitely try this place out, it's for everyone.
I've loved this gym for several years. Moving away now, sadly, but in particular have loved the classes: inclusive, funny and kind. Top quality instructors who really care and are accepting of the quirky and unusual, and all kinds of bods - you absolutely do not have to be a lycra barbie/gym bro to come here!! I'll miss you guys.
If you are looking for a welcoming, LGBTQIA+ friendly gym this is the place for you. There is genuine, intersectional representation at this facility and the staff are so kind. It is a little vintage on the inside but that adds to the charm as the space is always super clean.
Newtown Gym is the best gym. The staff is friendly and they offer everything you need to train and stretch. What I enjoyed the most was the calm room they use for pilates and yoga, I used to spend a long time stretching there. Thank you Newtown Gym! I miss you already!
No fuss gym. Get your workout done with minimum involvement with others. But it also is very social. I went to do a step class and all members were celebrating the coming of Mardi gras with a small sitting down, chat and nibbles, before the class. Nice!
Old skool retro type gym. Most of equipment been there for years and years.. All basic equipment here. There are a few choices nearby but for reasons I keep coming back here.. Other places have more equipment and busier and play muzak way
I've been a member for a few months now. It was a bit $$ to sign up but I'm only on a 3 month membership which is flexible, so it's worth it. It included an after hours access token/card thing which I have used a lot. The facilities like
The services are getting better. I believe there has been a change of management. The gym clean and the staff are friendly and easy to talk to. Lots of new equipments. The gym is going through a makeover. Definitely very positive changes.
I will miss this gym so much! Sadly having to cancel my membership as I'm moving interstate, I cannot praise the wonderful staff, experience and positive and inclusive culture of Newtown Gym enough. Thank you so much for all that you do!
Mark Mamo is one of the personal trainers here - he is fantastic. I've hired him for PT sessions to help me get started on my own fitness journey. He's always welcoming and understanding, and works toward making sure your techniques and
I went to this gym for a period of 3 years and in that time I feel the gym grew to an unsustainable level. One of the problems I had was the gym is too small but more and more people joined which results in an overcrowded gym with not
While not as flash as the Fitness First down the road, I'd rather go to Newtown Gym any day. It's owned and run by a local (and has been for more than a decade), costs about half of a FF membership, has well-maintained and functional
Newtown Gym is a great place to keep fit. It has friendly staff and a non-threatening atmosphere. There’s no silly posing here - just the diverse Newtown community exercising (and having a chat occasionally, if that’s what you want).
Excellent old school gym. Love going to train here as part of my fitness passport membership, place is always clean, staff are extremely knowledgeable and available to assist if needed.highly recommend.
Never had a better experience with a gym. Great selection of equipment, great availability and above all the most excellent staff. Felicity and Bob in particular were INCREDIBLE. 10/10 would gym again
I love this gym. Ive been a member for a few years now. The classes are great, the staff are friendly but mostly I love that it's unpretentious. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
I have been coming to this gym since 2003. This gym is well run and almost always a friendly place to train. Try this gym you won't be dissapointed. No Photo- I don't photo well.
Cant recommend this gym enough - very lovely vibe, staff and patrons are so welcoming and kind. Amenities are plentiful and very clean and priced so well.
Great gym for tourists - $20 for a day pass. Plenty of cardio and weightlifting equipment and very clean. Very nice and welcoming staff at the front desk
No fuss, no nonsense old school gym. Very clean and tidy - the weights are always put away! Love the old school equipment and iron plates.
Great local gym! Not intimidating for new gym goers, everyone is very friendly and helpful. Great classes too. Highly recommend!
My partner and I have been members for over 12 months now. We highly recommend this gym to others because;
Excellent gym. Good equipment, plenty of space and an excellent community vibe.
