I’ve been there bunch of times now and have always found them to be helpful and have some great pricing on selected fish/plants/etc.. They have a lot of gold fish and supplies. They use central water / filtering system that assures the greatest chance for success of buying happy, healthy new fish. The tanks and store are clean and the fish are well fed. They have a lot of specialized/ acrylic tanks and other equipment you just can't find elsewhere. For some of the other commenters: Some fish do not do well if purchased separately. For example, schooling fish need to have a group of friends to stay active and happy. If you can’t fit any more than one or two in your tank the aquarist will understand the chances of that particular perches will not produce good results anyways. Then the customer will not return for that reason. However, better that, then a dead fish as well. Customers will expect the store owner to be accountable for losses on the back end... ~However, these are animals, not shirt buttons. Any good aquarists will want to assure reasonable placement for the product they sell and the animals whose care they are in charge of. Many pet stores (like the SPCA) require an adoption agreement be signed before they allow a person to be considered for the placement of animals. Far too many people are unknowledgeable and selfish and ignorant. And think fish are less deserving of their very intense and specialized requirements. Any aquarist should know that store owners do not raze the fish they have for sale. Most fish are in store tanks for less than a week. If one was to travel alongside a fish’s journey to your tank, I'm sure you would be surprised they made it at all! Some of these fish were swimming in a lake 2 weeks ago and are now having to live in conditions not very conducive to their wellbeing and what they have been use to all their lives. Don't be surprised if you find a few fish just don’t make it, or in the case of locally bread fish, where nature is not allowed to weed out the weaker ones, you end up buying a few straight up duds in the first place. I have never been to a fish store yet where I purchased fish/plants/ invertebrates and had 100% winning happy fish every time that never died. It happens... We don’t go buying a box of apples and never expect to get a few bad ones, either.. So relax.. Consider it part of the price before you buy!! Explaining it to the store owner in most cases will net you some value down the road... You should also consider you may have to cull a few here and there and some my show nice at the store but soon get sick from all the stress, develop expensive illnesses that you now have to deal with and or destroy... Please keep in mind, this is not the store owner’s fault, or the wholesalers or the importers or the breeders or the fisheries or fishes... It’s your fault!! Yes, that's right!! YOUR FAULT!! Because YOU decided to take fish out of there natural environment and keep them as pets for your personal and somewhat selfish needs.. So show some respect and responsibility for your lot in all this and you will get along with the people and this hobby just fine..
It is a store for freshwater aquarium hobbyists. It is not really a pet store like Petsmart which sells dog food & cat food kind of stuff. Stuff you should definitely buy from this store: 1 - freshwater live plants - All their plants are beautiful and they have a show tank for all their live plants. The plants are healthy and in high quality. All the plants are under $10 so it is probably the best place to get your live plant. Not a lot of selection though 2 - The hardscape stuff like dragon stone, lava rock, and Mopani woods - The dragon stone is priced at $1.99 per lbs and Lava rock is $2.99 per lbs. A medium size Mopani woods are under $20. If you are in the aquascaping hobby, you probably find those prices are unbelievable. The fish: Well, all the tanks were clean. They did not decorate the tank at all so it didn't look too appealing. Fishes were mostly healthy. You can get fishes at the price about 30-40% lower than the other store. The fishes I bought there are so far so good, no disease whatsoever. I talked to the owner and she said they did quarantine the new fishes for a few days. They added Furan to the quarantine tank to remove all the stress related disease caused by shipping (she said "Yellowish powder" so I kind of figured it out it was Furan). The service: Well, it is sort of a mom and pop fish store. Most of the time I only saw one people running the whole store, so don't expect too much from one person. The owner was nice enough to get me the fish I want exactly from the tank full of the same type of fish, and let me check the fish under the light even though she got other customers waiting. Aquarium and other gears: They don't carry any popular branded aquarium like Fluval, Marineland etc. Their aquariums are mostly from Asia or China. Well, I would say you should get your tank elsewhere unless you want to try some new stuff. Store policy: I saw the sign "no refund no exchange" at the counter. I never attempted to return/exchange stuff from that store before so I don't know how it works. I had some bad luck before buying sick fishes from other stores and they died overnight. Most of the time I didn't bother bringing the dead fish to the store and asked for refund. It just not worth the time and effort considering the dead fish was only few bucks. However, I did return the fish 2 times at Petsmart and had my refund (no point in exchanging because they would get the replacement from the same infected tank). They just gave me the refund without asking me anything at Petsmart. If you want to have the warranty for your fishes, you should get your fish from Petsmart only (not even Mr. Pet) I would recommend this store to the freshwater aquarium hobbyist. You should definitely check it out.
This is my closest LFS. I'm kind of surprised by some of the reviews on here. The owner is OCD about the cleanliness of the store and the tanks. It shows in the quality of the livestock and plants. It is a smaller store so selection is limited, but still quite good for it's size. There's a lot of Asian specialty fish like goldfish, Koi and Parrot fish. She might have the best pricing on schooling fish like neons in the city in groups of 10. Last time I was there she had some beautiful Arrowanas, and variety from glofish to pea puffers. She carries most brand names, but some of the really interesting items are actually the offshore tanks and supplies. Really inexpensive rimless packages for well under $100. Generic foams and maintenance supplies compare to online pricing. I was surprised to see people complaining about the pricing here. I've never seen anything outrageously priced. In fact, I've been really happy with the value of my purchases. She is a literally a one woman show, and with distancing and people waiting, it gets hectic, but I think she does a good job of serving the customers. She catches the fish, packs the plants, packages the dry goods and she's also the cashier. If you're in a big rush, you may want to go on a weekday when it's less busy. She turns over a lot of livestock so the displays change quite frequently. It's definitely worth a visit.
PLEASE NOTE: BEWARE.... NO FISH WARRANTY WHATSOEVER. Purchased many community fish $$$$$$ Over 3 decades of owning aquariums I'm diligent on maintaining peak water conditions. Less than 24 hours, one of the fish was lethargic and died. All of the other fish I purchased are thriving and healthy. No efforts in making this situation right. Instead, I was blamed for killing the fish. I offered a sample of my aquarium water quality to verify that my water conditions are not the cause of death. I was told the death was possibly due to my water conditions. A cost of a single $13 fish has lost a paying and recurring customer. I support locally owned businesses, but this is one that does not deserve my money. Be warned........ Majority of all aquarium store fronts provide 24-48 hours of warranty to display confidence in the health of their fish they sell. Instead of rectifying the situation, I was blamed. Pitiful customer service for this day and age.
I absolutely despise businesses that close early without notice, against their own posted hours of operation. They may have cheap, overproduced fish, and sometimes hard to find fish, but this business does not care about customers, business or anything beyond their own personal leisure time. Will not support this lackluster business again, waste another dollar or moment after 3 consecutive circumstances where they have failed to do their bare minimum of a business as to stay open as THEY have designated, or even communicate online OR in the form of a post it note on the door. With so much competition in this city, it is without question that I can get better service, price, and customer appreciation elsewhere like; Aquariums West, April's, King Ed's, Noah's pet ark, or even petsmart if I don't want to go to fish addicts in the outskirts.
Very clean store! Well kept fish and good variety. When I came in the staff was helping another customer and talking them out of buying a fish they really wanted because the fish was too aggressive for their tank, which I live to hear when staff are not just trying to sell you something. Staff was friendly with me and helped pick out a few fish that would not get too big for the tank I have. Very nice selection of healthy live plants at a good price. Not over stocked with random junk like some places have... Kept tidy and inventory is all very well stocked with a few options. Will be going back more for my fish needs!
Clean enough store...though some of the fish I was interested in buying looked to be having breathing problems, so gave them a miss. I did end up buying 3 bloodfin tetras. Two died later that afternoon, the third one the following morning. I called to them to advise and see what their policy was. She advised me they don't guarantee their fish...and if I had my receipt, she would sell me replacement fish at half price. What a joke. I will certainly never shop here again. Buyer beware. Especially with other pet stores that stand behind their product....Fantasy Aquatics just up the street and Noah Arc in Kitsalano.
Wanted to buy a fish there and the lady informed me that she would only sell me that fish if I also bought a female fish, I have a show tank and it has no females as well as I don't have the room for a fry tank. There were no signs informing me that I would need to purchase not one but two fish and that I would need to get a male and female. Her excuse is that no one will buy the females. Maybe next time she shouldn't order females then? Just a thought as they have now lost out on future sales from myself and my friends. The employees attitudes were poor and rude and it was not a welcoming environment.
Their Siamese fighting (betta) fish are kept poorly, in grimy little cups of water all next to each other while all other species are kept in filtered tanks. Just because this species can survive in a puddle doesn't mean they should live in less than optimal conditions. Bettas were either agitated with others nearby, or at the bottom of the cup barely moving. Very disappointing because it could be a nice store, but I can't overlook singling out a species only to mistreat them. If they read this, please do better.
The owner is Lisa and she is a total sweetheart! She is always happy to answer my questions, never rushes or condescends to me. She is honest and never ever tries to sell me something i dont need and has even advised me against buying something that wasnt necessary . She takes great care of the shop, always clean and the tanks always look clear and great. She has very nice real plants at very good prices and good array of food etc... i highly recommend North America Pet Store.
BEWARE ICH! Bought 6 tetras from here. After they were bagged I walked out and noticed a few weren't looking so hot. I returned seconds later and told the lady that sold them to me. She goes "they are fine just shocked from being put in the bag"... I say ok sure and leave. Get home and sure enough 1 has already died.. Edit: one day later, and I've pulled 3 of 6 fish out of my tank. One died the other two have serious ICH. I would stay away from this store
Unfriendly staff; lots of staring at you for browsing. I came in looking for goldfish but they are all low quality and some clearly sick; some bigger goldfish in the back are sick and dying. Heartbreaking. Would never buy here. All supplies are super expensive: JL aquatics in Burnaby is cheaper and Aquariums West has higher quality, healthier fish. I don’t understand the five start reviews; they all must be new to fish keeping.
This is a very good freshwater aquarium shop. Fish selection is limited, but it has a great range of water quality products and decor items. The staff was friendly and helpful to me, and the whole store is well-laid out and spotlessly clean. The only thing I would change is to give the fish some hiding places; they seemed a bit stressed out. At least their tanks were very clean, though. I will definitely return.
The lady stayed late to help me yesterday. I've come here for years and many places like PetSmart won't help you within a few hours of closing. I prefer to come here a little out of my way, then to waste my money in box offices with undependable staff, hours and access. Thank you for your constant work in helping the fish community thrive with ease in access and price.
They had zero customers in the store but still ordered me to wear a Cough-ID 1984 virtue-signalling mask during a heat wave? No thanks. People need to stop believing the hysterical Covid PROPAGANDA and actually get a grip. The average age of people who die with Covid is 82.4 years. EIGHTY TWO POINT FOUR YEARS. No one that old is buying fish in your store.
We purchased four rummy nose tetras and a cory here and shortly they all started to show signs of camillus worms. They ended up infecting our whole tank after having the hardest time getting rid of them. Finally, a treatment of Levamisole HCl got rid of it but not after nuking most of our tank. Would not risk purchasing from here again.
Excellent quality fish, some very interesting species that you don't commonly see in other fish stores, the plants are of excellent quality as well. Very clean water, well looked after fish until they go to they're forever homes. The lady who works there is very knowledgeable about what she's selling. Highly recommended!
To the owner: you gotta treat your fighting fishes better. They were in individual dirty cups, full of fish poop, dirty water and the cups covered by a big piece of glass. How are they supposed to get oxygen with fully covered cups and in such dirty water? The rest of the fishes look ok, in clean oxygenated water.
No warranty on livestock. The store is more on the smaller end compared to other aquatic stores. Limited types of livestock. The lady comes across as unfriendly and rushes service. There are many other stores that has more selection, better service and price. I don't see myself going back unless necessary.
Owners were helpful and knowledgeable. Good selection of different fish, the lady there helped us pick out the right combination of fish that wouldn't kill eachother for the size of our tank. They have beautiful tanks there I haven't seen anywhere else and I would love to buy.
Great little neighborhood aquarium store. Although I find selection a little lacking, but a great place to pickup small supplies and the usual basic fish. The store is clean, and the owner is friendly. I picked up some shrimp + plants months ago, and they're doing great.
Shopped here for years and never had any issues. Always found the owners to be friendly but quite. A fair selection that always seems to change. One of the few places that has Cherry Shrimps and Lobsters/Cray Fish. oh and beware of snails on the plants!
Best aquarium store in Vancouver. The store lady patiently waited while my kids made their first purchase. Lots of fish selections and aquarium accessories. My kids can’t wait to visit the store for their next buy. A must visit place for fish lovers.
Lisa is very charming and knowledgeable. I have been visiting her shop for a few years now and really like the wide array of decorative and aquatic equipment she provides. Her tanks are always clean and the fish and plants never carry snails!
The store was very clean, clearly laid out. The lady at the front was pretty quiet, not overly interactive. She did help us find a fish once asked, but didnt ask about how we were going to take care of it, tank suitability, nothing. My wife
This is a good place to buy fish, their tanks are kept relatively clean (some are a bit dirty). The tanks all have live fish, and there are no dead ones, and they have a wide assortment of different types. I came that day to check out the
This store has a good selection of supplies and equipment, and often stocks interesting species. However, I would NOT recommend purchasing fish here, as both times I bought fish (tetras) here they ended up having Ich (White spot disease).
Wonderful clean fish store with all the tanks spotless. I've never had any fish from here get sick or die like from other pet stores. The owner takes exceptional care of the fish and also has wonderful quality fish and products for them.
The owner is friendly. The shop is spotless. She gives good advice and stocks many kinds of fish. Her aquariums are well made and I haven’t seen them in the big box pet stores. A must see place for freshwater fish and supplies.
This is my local aquarium store, where I get all my goldfish! Lisa can be shy when you first meet her but she’s very knowledgeable and really cares about her livestock. Come here to support your local mom and pop shops!
Nice looking shop. Very clean tanks. Large selection of specialty gold fish. Good variety of tropical also. All fish look healthy. Typical cheap fish food available. The good expensive ones are on a different shelf.
Great all around selection of aquariums, product and fish! Very clean and organized store. The owner is also a very nice lady. I still have the fish in my aquarium that I purchased from her 2 years ago!
The owner/storekeeper is always polite and says hello. They have a good selection of fish and the tanks are spotless. Good prices too. I go there every couple of months and stock up on supplies.
Clean, beautiful little store with a small but good selection of fish and aquarium supplies. Lisa goes out of her way to help customers. Note: the store closes at 6, not 7, from Nov to Feb.
One of my favorite fish stores with a very good selection of fish, koi and aquarium products with the only downside being that you can't return fish and other products. Great pet store!
This is always our go to place, they have a wide variety of fish and products, the store is laid out nice and very clean. The lady that works there is super nice and informative.
Very nice, Well organized, Very clean and good price on fishes and ornaments. Will come again for my hubby fix. They just need to work on there website and everything is good.
So good, as clean as a lab. Great selection and service. Had a really nice time there and am completely confident in the quality. Nice space, where the aquarium are.
Surprised as this store has good selection of Aquarium equipment and Fish, compared to it curb appeal. definitely worth a visit for Fish/Aquarium stuff.
Very well laid out. Fish are hearty and I did not notice any dead. Their plant selection is very healthy looking and lush. Sorry for not taking photos!
The owner is very helpful and nice we sent some time in there not very big but still. Great selection of equipment I would say drop by and take a look.
This is a great store. The lady that runs it is very nice and very smart and knows what she's doing. Good prices good product. Very healthy fish tanks
Great selection and quality goldfish, often quite big. The store is well cared for and they order in interesting fish for their customer base.
I've been going to this pet store since I was 5. I have two cute fish, a black moor and an oranda. Definitely recommend if you want a fish.
Lisa was amazing with the fish selection. Got my first glo fish here . Good selection of stocks and fish food and decorations as well.
Nice clean store. Friendly staff. Unfortunately not too much fish stock right now which is the problem at every pet store.
Fine selection of FW fish. Got a pretty rare platy from them. Very reasonable prices on livestock. Worth a visit for sure!
Not really okay we bought there because we are so close but can't even exchange one we just bought disappointed. …
This store is always a pleasure to go into. Great owner; place is always bright and clean; good prices and selection.
This shop is really underrated, they have a good selection of accessories and fishes for the home aquarium hobbyist.
Not enough variety of fishes to choose from, plus, charging 40 cents for a small paper bag is outrageous!
Clean store and the water in their tanks are clean and clear. Good variety of fishes and supplies.
By far the best friendliest store in the area. l will shop there for fish and supplies any time.
Completely discriminatory. Do not recommend unless you want to feel completely out of place.
Very good vairity of defferent fresh water fish.. A little on the expensive side for price
Place is simple and tidy. Tanks are very well maintained, quality fish. Would shop again
Sells a variety of fish, and fish products. Friendly and polite, also speaks Cantonese.
Beautiful healthy fish, clean shop, good prices and helpful staff. Cant ask for more
The owner is very kind and the shop has a nice variety of fish and aquatic plants.
Variety of fishes but cost is little bit high compared to PETsmart in metrotown
Nice breed esp. goldfishes. Recommend this place if you need to fill the tank.
A good place for quality fish. Equipment and supplies are a reasonable price
Nice collection of fish and aquariums, bought few giant size Amano Shrimps
Always clean tanks and can get predatory fish there also nice selection
Very nice, healthy fish at a reasonable price. Quality store for sure.
Not much service, prices are not CHEAP and selection is very limited.
Clean fish store with a nice selection of aquarium plants as well.
They have lots of fish ,plants and aquarium equipment for sale.
very bad, sold me a 45 gallon while saying it was an 80 gallon
Tanks are always clean animals/plants are in good condition.
expensive and most plants did not thrive after being bought
Very good. I've got beautiful fish with reasonable price.
If you've got fish it's great. Any other pets forget it.
