This place is awesome!! It is very easy to get to using public transportation. I was visiting Los Angeles on a solo trip and rode the bus here from downtown. The bus dropped me off right at the entrance of the park. From there I went in the visitors center where there are restrooms, water fountains and maps that explain the different trails and their lengths. After filling up my water bottle and grabbing a picture of their map, I set off on the most popular loop trail. The trail itself is well maintained and the scenery is just gorgeous. I went at about 8-9am on a weekday and it felt like I had the whole place to myself. When I reached the beach/light house I was able to sit and watch Orcas jumping in the water!! How cool is that. I spent over an hour just relaxing and taking in the beauty of the water before heading back on the trail back to the visitors center.
This is a very nostalgic place to visit. Looking at the empty cages, kind of makes me feel sad when I think of the animals that used to be kept here. But the park on itself is a nice place to walk. Just be aware that people have made of this place (the area where the animals were kept) a trash disposal. It’s extremely filthy, and smells like urine all of the time. Some of the area has been fenced in order to keep people off. But you know how it goes, some people just don’t care and they still manage to get in. The areas where you can walk are nice though. There’s no bathrooms near by, that I know of, or drinking water. The place itself is easily accessible. And a nice place for families with kids to visit.
Had a great time, went with my husband. We took our dog and she really liked it too. There's a lots of areas to sit on benches and on the grass. We went during the week so I assume it gets more crowded during the weekend. Lots of trees and shade. They have restrooms but I say go with caution. The worst ones are near the playground very dirty. The cleanest ones are near the merry go round. If you want to see the old la zoo area and aren't used to going uphill. You are in for a bit of exercise. Other than that it was fun.
The old LA zoo is a fun place to take your kids or a date for a picnic. Parking is FREE, entry is FREE, you can picnic on the grass or use the park picnic benches. If you have kids there’s a huge park down the hill from the zoo area with public restrooms and brand new playground equipment too. There’s no bathrooms up near the zoo area, but the playgrounds bathrooms are only a 5 minute walk away.
Really cool area of Griffith Park. The old zoo from the 60's loves here. You can see old animal enclosures, cages, stone walls and much more. Also a really nice hike if you take it all the way back to the Griffith Park carousel parking lot Takes about an hour, but worth it. Just watch out for the resident mountain lions!
It was really fun to shoot here . It was a little hard to find, not going to lie. But once we did find it... Totally worth it! It was fun to climb around, explore, take pictures and "hike" down. There's a lot going on at this park, from picnic areas to the abandoned zoo to the merry go round. …
It is a awesome place to checkout. You can stay in the immediate park area and do the very short walk. Or you can walk up to the trails. 2 very different options. And if you feel like having a park picnic, this is a great place to do so. I loved this little oasis in the middle of LA.
I love the grassy area nearby, it’s way more relaxed than the nearby areas of the park on the weekend. Later in the summer I saw some people doing Shakespeare in the park, so it’s a really magical place. This side of Griffith always has parking, too, which I appreciate :)
I really love this location I just wish they would sweep it down and get rid of glass that gets broken there and fix the fence so that people can't go through I mean I know there's a lot but we know maybe it could be done as a community service project
Really nice place to go and have a easy hike. The recent rains have made the hill sides green and lush. The trees and flowers are in bloom and everything looks amazing. This is also an old piece of LA City history that you can go see and explore.
Cool little place to visit. It makes you feel bad how small and crammed the animals must have been, but fun to explore. If you go upwards on behind the cages you can find a steep small road. Its a good little hike that will make you sweat.
My friend Jack is so silly. He likes to dress up as a lady and tickle people with a feather while exclaiming that he's simply not that type of girl! He cracks me up. Last June he was going through a rough patch of depression due to his
Hiking, photography, nice shady areas with picnic tables. Went here with my kids and they loved the old zoo remains. Have porta pottys which is great. Bring your water and hat it gets warm here in the summer.
It was great. There was a film crew filming for NCIS. We were glad the area wasn't closed to the public. We ate lunch and was able to still do the hike to the top. Very challenging hike but so awesome.
Come and find it. Sit on the picnic table. Put on your headphones, and listen to Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd in it's entirety. Preferably wearing sunglasses while your eyes are closed. Thank you!
If the park was cleaner, I'd give 5 stars. My kids and I love this park. It has a lot to do. It's very pretty and has a great playground with unique features such as a mini zipline and chair swing.
Great place to hike to from the city, interesting place. Nice events like Shakespeare festivals are held in the evening sometimes.
Restrooms
A little dirty… wouldn’t use this sitting
A nice hidden gem in LA. Shakespeare in the park in summer has become such a treat. A great place to picnic, bring friends and take in the natural beauty of LA outside the concrete jungle.
plenty of tables and space for social distancing. the rocks of old zoo are fun to climb on, just a tiny bit dangerous so be careful! Nice trees for shade. We saw a deer, it was adorable
This is a huge recreation park. You can have a picnic with your family and friends, wander around the old zoo along the path. You can also hike along the trails and enjoy the views.
Sunday afternoon of course there was many families... people walking their dogs others walking along with friends etc... nice trail just to enjoy some good California weather.
At the entrance starting at the Merry-go-round parking Lot 1 we saw these keys... on the post next to the sign. Hopefully the owner sees them in case they lost the recently.
Take a deep breath. What is that smell? History! No admission fee, no employees, take your time and enjoy yourself. Take pictures for some strangers posing in cages.
Cool area to check out well kept. Some people can be punks by vandalize the park. But Park service does a good job keeping the area clean or covering up graffiti.
It's a very quiet and calming area. You can have a photoshoot or even shoot a small video here without the trouble that someone can ruin the atmosphere
One of the better parts of Griffith park for picnics. It's a little more secluded here so you don't have to deal with the congestion of the play area.
Be aware of coyotes at night and be prepared even if you're going for a late night toke, walk with your dog, or even with your significant other.
Super cool spot! The abandoned zoo can be a little creepy at night but it's well worth it! Cool little picnic spot as well to relax and eat!
Cool hiking, nice open space. The old zoo exhibit spaces are fun and almost eerie, but look out for urine, broken glass, graffiti.
Great Park Area for well mannered Puppies and Dogs. My two year old loved it. Great walks and trails all over. Beautiful scenery.
Saw a couple of kids paying with mud and it was funnier than any Netflix shows. The kids ran around and yelled: “quick sand!!”
Saw A Midsummer Nights Dream here tonight. Lots of space to put the picnic blanket on the grass and enjoy the show.
Great place for a picnic and to bring the kids or grandkids. Parking was easy and free. Lots of hiking trails too.
Lots of free space but to many nats when we went on June 19th so we had to leave. They were attacking like crazy.
Such an amazing place! I never even knew this existed. They have plenty of parking. Great trails too.
The picnic area isn't that great but the abandoned old LA zoo makes for interesting pictures .
This place is fun and interesting lots of history from this park and you can hike everywhere.
A must visit. So much to do. Or just to relax and picnic. Free events and ample free parking.
5 nights a week during the summer, free Shakespeare is fantastic! Bring a picnic and enjoy!
I love the fact that you can visit an abandoned zoo! Hopefully it stays open to the public.
Pretty cool old small dungand like catacombs / cages , and kinda sad for the old residents.
A fun spot to relax and enjoy the quiet surroundings. Great spot-always love coming here!
Nice place for a small picnic get together during the pandemic to celebrate a life event.
