Historical burial site of many of those African Americans who settled the quiet enclave known as Cosmo, Florida. Many of these people were descendants of those who found a safe refuge from the harsh conditions of slavery. They were of the Gullah-Geechee culture. They lived off the land and developed homesteads and a close-knit strong community. Two main churches in the community (Alexander and the Church of the Living God the Pillar and Ground of the Truth) kept families and a strong respect for high values and hard work as central in the life of the residents. Names like Bartley, Braddy, Key, Cody, Brown, Demps, Cooper, Brooks and many others continue to have descendants who live in the area and in Jacksonville. Many still bury their loved ones in the homeland of the Palm Springs cemetery.
Location was tricky. It felt like I was driving in someone's yard but technically, it's between 2 neighborhoods on a dirt path. There are many many many ants. Even with bug spray on, I'm covered in bug bites. I don't think anyone is managing the property, but if they are.. I can't tell unfortunately.
We do a lot of work for find a grave. Went here to record headstones and was really saddened by the lack of up keep here. Would love to start a project to do a cleanup and keep up monthly. The history of this cemetery is unique and it really deserves better. Checking into what we can do.
