Update: returned all unused things we ever bought from them today. The guy seemed much nicer..relieved even that I was returning the stuff. Didn't even ask any questions about why, just returned my money. I bet if I were white, Irish, or a guy, he would've asked if the products weren't up to my standards or why etc . Just goes to show.. I'd always heard about this store from my partner, but never visited until today. And I regret every single moment that I spent there. Upon approaching, I noticed the staff member's facial expression change from a smile to a look of discomfort as soon as he took notice of me. However, I ignored it, and asked him if he had adapters. He said yes then quickly went to get them while asking me which ones I wanted. I said EU-->UK. He then corrects me: "You mean UK-->IRELAND?" (in my head, 'um, those are the same??'), however, I responded, sure. I buy them, but as I was walking away, something just didn't feel right about our interaction and it was eating at me. So I stood there and pretended to be on the phone so I could watch his interaction with the other customers. A middle aged white woman walked up. He was so friendly to her! Smiling, laughing, joking around etc. Then a white guy around my age walked up. The same: friendliness, more witty banter with the guy, the works. And he didn't know either of them. Still I thought, maybe I am overthinking things here again, so I decided to go back a second time. As I approached, again, the smile on his face fell to the same look as before of discomfort. This time I even took my mask off and smiled, greeted him, and asked him if he could help me with an issue regarding my balcony door. To his credit, he did give the advice, suggested the product to use, and everything, and did give me the product. But the whole thing felt as if he did so grudgingly. Adding to this, he also interrupted me 5x during our conversation and, on the last time, I actually had to do the Kamala Harris quote, "I'm still speaking," to which he stopped himself and smiled from embarrassment. I came away from that encounter feeling even more confused and put off than before, but still wanted even more proof of this insidious prejudicial behaviour, so after a conversation with my BF about the encounter, I went back to ask a question about the adapters I bought, and for further clarification regarding something he said earlier about my balcony door. This time I went, kept my mask off at first, and tried making a joke, "Hi again, you must miss me at this point lol." That received an awkward silence and a VERY tight lipped smile, the one someone gives you when they HATE you but because of social obligations they have to be polite to you. He then says an overly curt, "How may I help you?" As an expat, u don't expect much from your chosen country's natives. However, as a POC expat, u CANNOT expect much from them, as u have been conditioned not to expect anything positive, not even basic decency. And in the case of PEARSE ST HARDWARE, I can conclude that I wasn't treated with basic decency and that I have been treated with severe prejudice. The fact that I kept second guessing my own feelings, and went back there 3x makes this devastating. And this is not indicative of trademark Irish hospitality. Racial tensions are now extremely high, and as much as I am a firm supporter of the small business, I would rather not waste anymore of my precious resources on people who actively hate me and my kind. Upon moving to Ireland I have met with such unwelcome behaviour, prejudice, having hateful things yelled at me on the street, you name it, and this just further adds to my feelings of being unwelcome and less than. My WHITE boyfriend (whom the staff member was much friendlier to earlier in the day), and I will be taking our business and money elsewhere, even though we live so close to the store and would rather just walk a few mins rather than have to take a bus downtown. And BUYER BEWARE if you really don't want to support Irish fanatical nationalism, prejudistic demeanours, and racism.
I live very close to this shop and at first I thought what a useful shop to have in the neighbourhood! . After few times I ve been there, I decided I never will ask them for help ever again. The shop is quite good, the SHOP, if you know what you are looking for and just grab it and pay, then it s ok. The problem comes where you need help from the owners. OMG! They always have the word NO on their mouth, doesn t matter what you ask. If they have to go beyond their duties to try to help you, then it s the end. I ve never seen them smiling or being really happy to help you. Their slogan must be The easier, the better for us . It s such a pity, I ve always found such lovely, caring and helpful stuff in this neighouhood, but I have to say, these guys irritate me so much. I ended up thinking they are rich and don t need the money at all.
I'm a traveler who's staying in Dublin for 14 days. I visited this store to find the appropriate hardware fixing my broken carrier handle. Even though It's very extra ordinary hardware, I can find one in a second from the owner of this shop(maybe James) He's very friendly and I can figure out he's an expert at once. Owing to this store, I can finally get fixed handle. Thank you so much. Yunmi Park Best Regards
Walked in and immediately found some of the things I was looking for, so it's well organised, and, being a Yank and I asked for "zip ties" and he was able to show me to the cable ties, so kudos to the shopkeeper for being able to translate Yank, and have some friendly convo. Really good experience, and the shop looks to be very well stocked. Definitely recommend it!
This is a great little hardware shop, it could be part of Harry Potters world, every inch of space is used and staff are very helpful. Considering how much the docklands have changed it the last 20 years this place is an oasis of real Dublin in a digital world. I bet they have what you need even if you don't know what you need
James and Clive are some of the most helpful people I have ever dealt with, if there's ever anything they don't have they can suggest a substitution they do have or send you to the places that do have whatever it is you're looking for. You won't find a better independent hardware shop anywhere.
Great old school hardware store. It is not a nice place, but it is full of stuff. They are very helpful and will always recommend whatever they think it's best. We're really happy to have this store near our place, it's always been super useful. Prices are not super high, so that's great.
The guys are always great to deal with and can always lay their hand on any part that we need! Online shop open now also so we can have the part waiting for us when we get there (need to remember to place the order first though!), cheers for all the help over the years! Paddy
A fantastic one stop shop where the experience and practical advice of an old world hardware store meets modern retail practice, and it doesn't hurt that it is managed by two of the most customer friendly guys you'll meet in any retail setting. 5 stars from me.
Excellent local hardware store small but very helpful staff regarding getting the right thing for the given job you are doing . Wish there were more local store s like this in Dublin that is what our little city is missing big time …
Been dealing with them since they opened. Very friendly and helpful to deal with. Very competitive prices considering economies of scale etc. Surprisingly good range of products given the size of the shop. Highly recommended.
The guys here are so helpful and friendly.if they don't sell it they will point you in the right direction.i went in for something rather specicialized. Not knowing dublin very well they told me exactly where to get it
Friendly helpful staff until one day they just turn on you. I still don't have an explanation for this change in behavior for the last two times I went there and they wouldn't tell me after asking. Weird experience
