Today me and my wife went in looking for some of the beautiful plastic tiles we had seen hanging in the alleys of Old Town. We saw some in the shop and i pointed to them and asked the store attendant if "those tiles were for sale" searching for clarification she pointed to the colorful plastic rectangles and said "you want those? Bc those are not tiles, tiles are made out of cermaic" Yes I said, are those for sale (getting annoyed at the lecture I am being given on tiles and ceramics. She proceeds to help my wife pick out the item. During this my wife who is Native American and appreciates cultures, asks, "so what are they called?" She says something in Spanish and my wife tried to immitate, the attendent was frustrated and made my wife feel dumb for not being able to pronounce the word in spanish very well. My wife then asks what is the meaning in English? The attendant never responded. We paid and left the store not satisfied with our experience. We went next door to look at the mirrors and other decor. Well immediately the store attendant from plaza gifts apparently left her own store and went to this store. She didnt know we were in the store next door and proceeded to trash talk us to the next store owner, in the middle of the store Destiny Martinez (thats the name she gave us anyways) proceeded to call us ignorant and make fun of us to the other store owner. This store owner sympathized and said of all things on Easter. When the store owner asked Destiny if we bought the item, we stepped out into the open of the store and said yes we did. Destiny quickly went back to her store where we confronted her about her comments. She was unapologetic, would not return the item, and said we were rude first and deserved the treatment and comments from her (After spending $30 at the store!). We are not tourists, we are locals, and I am very disappointed the owner was not around to speak with. Destiny's actions were deplorable for an employee, at least trash customers in the back room not out on a store floor. After I speak to the owner I may update this review, until then I will never purchase another item from their store or the one next door, I will also advise against purchases from visitors and locals alike. If Destiny is working run away she will leave you regretting your purchase. • • •
At first, this place was my favorite to stop at in Old Town. I’d bring any visiting family and friends there and would give them plenty of business. One day while there in April, the cashier followed me around and was incredibly rude. It’s as if she felt threatened that myself or my family would take something. I proceeded to give them $150+ in merchandise sales, and chalked it up to her having a bad day and being in an unsafe area. I went again this past week, again with the intent to make a large purchase. I noticed the same employee (older woman, long grayish hair) was following me again. I went to put what I had in my hands back because at this point, she’s making a good paying customer feel like a criminal. She literally ran after me and when I placed the two tubs of chilles back in the El Pinto section and she realized I’m obviously not stealing, she quickly turned the other way so I wouldn’t catch her. Fortunately my husband and father watched the entire situation unfold. NEVER EVER will I or my family go back. We’re good customers who have given this store HUNDREDS of dollars. It’s not fair to feel harassed by an employee when I have given them NO reason to feel suspicious of me. If the business is that worried about people stealing, perhaps additional cameras would be more welcoming than following customers around in an incredibly uncomfortable and rude manor.
A little confused about the negative comments below: it's a gift shop right on the Plaza, folks - of course it's overpriced. If you want reasonable prices - skip the trip to Abq Old Town and get it online; if you want the experience of bringing home a souvenir you got in a historic building hung with gorgeous ristras and right where the action is - you'll pay a premium. The "No Returns Accepted" sign looms large right over the register. I, for one, always bring out-of-town guests by, and they love it. The staff are extremely pleasant and friendly, and there's something here for everyone.
Some of the stuff is local but a many of the items for sale like the t-shirts and souvenirs are made in China or Mexico or available at many other gift stores that are not unique to Albuquerque or even New Mexico. Still other items are available for cheaper at the nearby gift shops. The only thing I would buy from here is the chile ristras if you’re short on time but if you have the extra time you can also buy them from local farmers to have a more authentic experience while supporting the farmer directly and not pay the mark up.
Thank goodness for Plaza Gifts. When we visited Old Town Albuquerque it was mid September I was told it was the beginning of the chili season, and Plaza Gifts was the only place I could find a fresh chili Ristra for sale at that time. Been anticipating this our whole road trip. Now hangs in our kitchen. Looked through other shops but wound our way back to Plaza Gifts for more souvenirs to bring back home. The girl behind the counter was especially helpful.
I am visiting family here in new mexico and I wanted to take souvenir tshirts back home. I googled and found this place. They have a lot of different items such as magnets, keychains, tshirts, mugs, and blankets. The tshirts are priced really good. They are 2 for $20. They have many designs to choose from in all sizes. I just wish they would have more medium size shirts in stock. However I am happy with my purchase!
Very overpriced!! Chances are, you can find it at a different store for less. Staff was nice and helpful but I felt like I was being watched like I was a thief. I decided to leave behind what I was going to buy because the so called owner refused to work with me on several things I was willing to buy. She totally turned me off so I took my business elsewhere.
Saw the reviews for this shop so I knew I had to check it out! Found some really unique items here! But the prices are high especially when I got some shot glasses and went next door and the shop next to it was cheaper, that was disappointing. This specific shop did seem to have some better quality items
These scam artists over priced there socks, I then located identical socks down the street and they would not return them nor price match them. Avoid them at all cost Update: Service was inattentive This experience caused me to roll my eyes multiple times, save yourself the eye rolls
Lots and lots of tee shirts and other nice items. I was looking for things to get for my family and I also got extra stuff for myself. Prices range from inexpensive nic naks, to jewelry pieces. There is also a western store on site.
The employee was very friendly and helpful. The store sold some unique products to New Mexico, but you could also get them at other nearby stores. Some items were cheaper and some were more expensive to other stores in the area.
Nice cozy, family- friendly shop full of tourists. Large inventory. Hard to move around the aisles. No restroom just fyi. Bring lots of money because there are so many great items to choose from. Easy parking on weekdays.
Cool shop with plenty of sweet gifts! Store was absolutely packed on the weekend, making it hard to spend quality time. Overall awesome shop, loved their magnet selection! Staff was super friendly and helpful as well.
Absolutely amazing little store! Such friendy staff with great NM stuff . You always find what you’re looking for .. I recommend this store to out of towners all the time. For my local NM people this is your store.
Friendly staff and great selection. We were able to find souvenirs our friends would actually want instead of something weird they hide at the back of a shelf!
Best T-Shirts ever! Been successfully buying gifts for friends (and treating myself) there for several years. Great quality and attractive unique designs.
It has a very nice experience buying , gifts for my family, affordable prices, unique gifts, and very nice customer service for the owner.
Went to other gift shops around Old Town then came to Plaza Gifts. Fun stuff to bring back home from my visit to NM. Exceptional staff
Probably the cutest and best shop in Old Town. We always manage to find something and they regularly have new little treasures.
I shop here on a regular basis. They have a great selection of sauces, spices, tees, wall decor, and an excellent staff.
Nice store with not- the- usual souvenirs. Clerk understandably nervous but fine store. Reasonable prices
It's a tourist shop conveniently located across from Old Town Plaza.
Nice place to shop for gifts for people back home.
