I drove all the way from northen Washington to Gunthers Portland shop to just look at the PX cycle E-XC + because it seemed too good to be true and when I got there after 300 miles it did not disappoint , the bike checked almost all the boxes , hydraulic brakes , fenders , front and rear racks , 9 speed , I love the shifter , 27 inch tires ( he even gave me a extra set of tires for free ) , POWERFUL mid drive motor , a nice suspension front fork. I added a thudbuster seat post and new seat but thats it. I have had the bike for almost a year now and love it , the only thing the bike was missing was a hand throttle and now I see they come equipped with them , I dont miss the throttle enough to get a new one though , I just love my bike! When headed out in the woods for the first time I was worried about some of the steep climbs that I would have to climb coming out and the bike performed better than I expected , it was mostly down hill going in and I was also concerned about having enough battery to get back to the truck . Well by the time I got back I still had 3 bars left after 15 miles of hard riding ( 7 1/2 in down hill and 7 1/2 out up hill) now I dont worry any more . I still want a extra battery so I can spend multiple days out in the woods . With the front and rear racks I can bring a cordless chainsaw with me to clear the trails as I go, added some panniers for supplys ,sleeping bag bungeed to the front rack and a small back pack for other essentials and me and my dog are set. Cant wait for summer

Poor customer service, called to inquire about a part and the person who answered the phone clearly didn't think it was worth his time or effort to help me. He told me the part I was looking for was dealer specific and to call a dealer for the specific bike brand. I had just called every dealer within a 100 mile radius before calling PEC and they all told me the part was not a dealer specific part and was a fairly universal Shimano part albeit out of stock. When I told him I wasn't looking for a dealer specific part and that there might be the possibility that he had what I needed he decided to be condescending and sarcastic and refused to check. Edit: I called looking for a charger for a Norco bike, a Norco bike with a Shimano drive unit and battery. A Shimano battery used on a variety of E-Bikes that uses a generic Shimano charger that ANY Shimano distributor could get, if you get Shimano chains or cassettes you can get Shimano chargers. I attempted to explain this distinction but you didn't want to hear it and proceeded to reiterate that the part was dealer specific and told me to "look elsewhere since you are so knowledgeable on the subject" and hung up the phone. I had called about 20 other bike shops in the area including all of the Norco dealers in the state of Oregon looking for that part and while no one had it in stock you were the only one to talk down to me and the only one who refused to even hear what part I was looking for.

Gunther did a great job of installing a Gospade conversion kit to our bike. However, after that things didn’t go as well. We also had him install some lights and I would agree with the other reviewer that there were some marked shortcuts and amateurish work done there. The USB cable from the lights to the battery stuck out at such an angle in a location that it was clear from first glance it was going to break no matter how careful I was. Sure enough it did within a week and when I contacted Gunther he offered to fix it by doing the same thing again. We found another solution for a USB cable that worked much better and moved on. His sauntering job of the rear light also broke within a couple of months. In addition to the light situation, on more than occasion we made an appointment to bring in the bike to be told he would start on it “next week”. I ride my bike a lot and if I’m bringing it to an appointment I expect work to be started with 1-2 days. When I politely expressed dissatisfaction with this the last time it happened Gunther literally told me to get out of his shop. Gunther does some things well and obviously can be very friendly at times based on other reviews but if I had it to do over I would look elsewhere.

In my previous review I think I was a tad unfair. I don't think Gunther is a bad guy, rather I think he's passionate ebike enthusiast who fell into the age old trap of thinking it's a good idea to make your hobby your career. His work is very much amateur, with lots of "I'll just wing it" solutions. Which would be fine if my friend was building a bike for me in his garage, but when I'm paying $1000 for a product I expect it to be a clean job. I have had multiple issues in the few months I've had my bike, and when I took it back to be repaired he wouldn't even honor his warranty, claiming he had already lost too much money on the bike. While I understand that, that's part of business and it's not my job as a customer to remedy a seller's bad business decisions. He also repaired a lot of other things I didn't ask to be repaired, and while I appreciate it, I would like to be asked about things like that, especially when he then tries to charge me for those repairs. (Edited - I still stand by what I said and gave a perfectly accurate description of events, but the personal comment was in bad taste)

I purchased a new mid drive bike form Gunther in Feb. I really just stopped by to see the mid drive system, and try one out, since I already had a good HUB drive that I loved. Gunther was quick to offer a test ride, so I took one. My wife knew from the look on my face as I rode by that the bike would be leaving with me. a month and several rides latter it was clear that my wife needed a new bike now to keep up with my new bike. I talked to Gunther, and he suggested his HUB drive 26 inch cruiser, it is smaller, and has a shorter stand over height. Since we were in social distancing mode, Gunther agreed to deliver, which he did. Now our rides are much more fun as she has no fear of hills, and can at least somewhat match my speed. We have gone as far as 30 miles on a ride, and hope to go 50 or more this summer. Gunther is a wealth of knowledge about electric bicycles, and is eager to share the knowledge. Buy form Gunther, you will not be disappointed!

My wife and each bought an ebike from PEC to trail rides and around town here in Bend where we live. Gunther sized each bike to personalize the ride and explained the features of each bike (they are different models). We loved the bikes for both for around town and off road. We have been amazed at how easy it is to go out for a 25-35 mile ride. I set my power boost on a lower setting and it's fun now we ride together. Whether up hills, around corners or long rides we stay together. We've especially enjoyed finding deserted jeep and logging roads. It's beautiful scenery and we cover much more ground than hiking. We have a number of other couples that have ebikes now too and we're looking forward to some longer trail ride picnics together. I had some follow-up questions as I've gotten to know my bike and Gunther has always been available. We've had absolutely no issues and can't wait for this coming spring to get started again.

My wife and I had been researching ebikes. I came across Gunther's shop via his craigslist ad. We touched base and he opened his shop up for us on a Sunday for a test ride. He had the bikes out for us, ready for a test ride when we arrived. He explained the features, it's super apparent that he is very passionate about ebikes. I was very impressed with the quality of the bikes(knowing these aren't $6000 "name brand" bikes--allthough many of the components are the same). I feel the bikes presented much stronger in person than the photos online(via CL and his store pics). We test rode the bikes and were super impressed(we had some experience on the fancier ones from rentals last fall). The bikes are really great. He shared his background on ebikes and his connections to get the bikes made as he wants them. He patiently answered all of our questions. His shop is no frills, but the bikes and Gunther are top notch!

Owner Gunther and right hand man Bob bring years of experience and excellence in building and converting Electric bycycles. I just had a Electra Townie converted to electric auxillary Power and I feel like I did as a kid riding a bike for the first time.Having the Power available for hills, headwind, And just plain bike scootin fun has turned my bike into a freedom machine! Gunter will have his own designed Bike available sometime soon but if you feel comfortable on your own bike just have the guys add the electric PKG to yours! Clean install and look, Gauge Pkg included, save hundred of dollars! Top of the line components, Local business, Gunther backs up All the work, always available to Talk shop, these guys love what they do And it shows! No I wasn't paid to say this, just want to spread the word for this amazing grin inducing business.

My husband and I purchased two bikes 3 1/2 years ago to use mainly for off-road riding while spending winters on our rv in the southwest. We’ve been extremely pleased and have logged many happy hours on them. Whenever we need a part or advice, Gunther is very responsive and happy to help. The bikes are fast, user friendly (I’m not a bike rider), and feel sturdy and substantial. Only con is the quality of the bike chain that comes stock, just didn’t hold up very well. That’s getting picky I know! The batteries are still working at full capacity, at least there has been no noticeable degradation. Am also so glad we bought mid drive over hub drive, and also standard mountain bike tire over the balloon style, big big weight difference, so you actually can use them with power off!!! Overall we are very satisfied with our purchase!

THANK YOU, GUNTHER! Did research on highly regarded ebike conversion kits and settled on Bafang 750 W mid drive kit. Then found Portland Electric Cycle on CL and got in touch with Gunther, the owner and expert on ebike conversions. Gunther did a conversion of my GT Grade. We spent time discussing/determining optimal battery/controller configurations and features -- shift and brake sensors to shut motor down when shifting and braking -- for long distance touring/commuting. Gunther did a superb job. I now have a fast relatively light fun road/gravel bike -- 5-20 lbs lighter than manufacturer offerings -- costing 50-70% less with a nice warranty and expert maintenance when needed. Have ridden 600 miles in two months with no problems. Very very pleased with Gunther's effort and highly recommend him.

  • Rudy Slizewski

I absolutely LOVE my E-XC+ E-bike. I’ve had it now for about 9 months and have around 1300 miles on it. I tend to ride pretty hard and fast and get off road whenever possible (as well as use this to rip around the city and do errands). My 2 year old daughter also loves it and goes with me everywhere in her Yepp Maxi seat situated comfortably on the back rack. The front rack almost always has something strapped to it and it never feels underpowered. No major complaints really (I’ve gone through some break pads, broken a chain, etc.) but Gunther is always accommodating and willing to right any wrong and is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to both the bikes and the rad places to take them. I highly recommend PDX Cycle. Great service, great products and a great price point.

Sold me a battery charger too powerful for my battery which ruined a battery only a couple months old. Gunther offered me $100 off a $400 battery. When i brought my bike in 2 years later, he stated in the 1st 2 minutes that the bike wasn't worth fixing and it was shot, then he went to it's perfectly fine just needs a charger and tune up. He reluctantly agreed to do a tune up and it could take up to a week. I called 2 wks later he hadn't done anything to it. He told me to just come get it. This was an $800 bike i had converted to an electric with him. I really wished i hadn't because now no one will touch it because cuz they don't want the liability. He essentialky screwed me and rendered my bike worthless.

I am thrilled with my new PXCycle E-XR ebike that I recently purchased from Portland Electric Cycle. There are an amazing amount of options on this bike for someone that does town and country road riding. After comparing online, I found this bike the best value in my price range (around $1500) in all of Portland. Gunther, the owner, is a wealth of knowlege and designs the bikes in his store. I found him an honest an pleasant person to deal with. If you want to purchase from the maker - this is a good place to go. An added bonus was I didn't have to wait long for an appointment during this Covid 19 closure. I would buy again If I needed another bike but I think this one is going to last me a very long time.

  • Nick Hogle

Very helpful and excellent customer support. I haven't even bought anything from pXcycle, but I contacted them for help troubleshooting a different brand of electric bike, and Gunther was very helpful. He generously spent almost a half hour on the phone with me to help figure out the problem I am having with a Juiced bike. (Again, I didn't even purchase this from him). He gave me many tips and pointers to help me figure out why my bike won't stay turned on. Don't listen to the other negative reviews. They don't appear to be authentic. I would gladly buy a new bike from Gunther, especially if I cannot get my Juiced bike to work!. Thanks again, Gunther, I'm really glad I called!

  • David L

Gunther converted my Nishiki mountain bike to electric, with a hub motor. This allowed me to keep all 21 speeds. Now I zoom up hills like an Olympic racer! Another shop said they stopped doing hub conversions bcs they couldn't make enough money :( But Portland Electric Cycle hooked me up nicely!!! He also put new higher handlebars for a more ergonomic ride, plus high quality tires low rolling resistance tires, all for about $950 including the complete system (controller, battery, motor, cables, etc.) This was a much better value than I could find elsewhere, and I did shop around. Thanks, Gunther!!! i LOVE my e-bike!!!

  • Dalton Brennan

Rude and ignorant over the phone. I let them know that I was leaving a one-star review before I hung up and then he started harassing me via text to get me to not leave a runt onestar reviewed been started acting like people don't care about Google reviews and then was acting like I was threatening his business for leaving an honest review of my experience with him while he was on the clock with this business. If this was not the owner but I was talking with then it happened at 5:10 pm 2/8/23 so you will know more likely who you would need to fire if you are the owner and it was not you that I spoke with.

  • Claude Goldstein

Gunther did a conversion for me. It’s a KHS fs with a Bafang mid-drive. I call it “the Beast”. It’s super fun to ride, has good range. The display is cool, in color, and has a USB port so I can charge my iPhone as I ride using Trailforks. I wish the motor didn’t hang so low because I can’t jump larger logs and obstacles but I am hoping to fab an aluminum skid plate so it will slide over things. Yea I could have spent 2x or 3x or 4x (!) the $$ and gotten something specifically engineered as an ebike and avoided that but really? This bike does great and did not break the bank!

  • Shiryl Crothers

My husband bought his 2nd ebike here. He was so happy with his experience with Gunther and thrilled with the quality of his bike that he simply told me we are getting you a new bike. I really didn't have a vote. We purchased my bike during the shelter in place mandate. Gunther was quick to respond and agreed to delivery to Longview. During delivery, we visited at length (while keeping our distance) with Gunther. He truly knows electric bicycles and is eager to help. Gunther, thank you! I am crazy happy with my bike!

  • Guisepi Spadafora

Gunther is beyond a nice guy. I'm a DIY kind of guy, so he helped me figure out my e-bike conversion for a trike. He was full of ideas, enthusiasm and knowledge, as well as spare parts, tools, and more. With more than a dozen years of experience in e-bike conversions, I trust his knowledge. And you can feel it just stepping into his shop. Peak behind the counter and you'll see all sorts of motors in the midst of repair, parts that only a mad scientist would know what they are, and tools galore. Thanks, Gunther!

  • nathaniel nath

Do not buy bikes from Gunther. He buys stolen bikes. My bike got stolen and the next day he had it for sale on his floor. He even punched my friend in the face when we told him we wanted my bike back. Luckily the guy next door at Fiji Emporium called the cops and I was able to identify my bike and get it back. Other bike shops say to stay away from Gunther because he is inexperienced and rips people off. Think twice before you buy a bike from this guy. You may be buying a stolen bike.

  • Raymond Hulet

I am satisfied with the products that Gunther sells and he can count on my return business. Gr8 doing business with him. I blew out my kitsome 1760 miles later in the course of about 2 years, Gunther made it right several times helping on the broblems and I resorted to.buying a different brand and let me tell u the Gunther was with me all the way, he put the new kit.on and went the extra mile. I would recommend him as a 10 star shop thank Gunther.

  • Tom Hanks

I was very leery about buying a bike in Portland when I live in WY but after doing my research and visiting with Gunther I bought one of his bikes....I love it, the fit and finish are exceptional and it required very little tuning out of the box....I had one little issue with the seat post which was remedied without complaint...I have 350 miles on it now and it is just as good as new....I highly recommend Gunther and PXCycle.

  • Bob Poor

I happened to be there when Gunther sod his first PX Cycle. In the under $2k class it has features like mid drtorque torque sensing ive,48v system that have better performance than bikes costing twice as much. Comes with racks and fenders to make it a great commuter bike for PDX with enough all road capability to ride just about anywhere. Gunther designed and imported a winner and stands by what he sells. Highly recommend.

  • Manuel Washington

I looked all over Portland area for a bike that was made with high quality workmanship and an affordable price. I was lucky to come upon Gunthers shop and was extremely satisfied with his knowledge of ebikes . I would recommend him to anyone for not only his knowledge but his willingness to help his customer to get the proper quality ebike that is needed. I've had my bike several months now and extremely happy. Thx again.

  • Marco Israel

I purchased an E bike on line and ran into issues. After not getting the help I needed from the company, I found Portland Electric Cycle. Spoke to Gunther and he had me bring my bike in. Within a few days he had the problem diagnosed and fixed. If you're looking for an electric bike or a mechanic, Gunther is your man. He's honest and pricing is fair. I could not be happier with repair. More power and better mileage.

  • Sally Lawyer

Totally enjoyed working with you while switching our regular bike into an electric bike. Good prices, timely service and knowledgeable information. We came all the way from the Seattle area on the advice of a Portland friend. At age 79, I can now keep up with my 21 year old grandson. Our son is looking for an electric bike, so we will for sure send him your way. Are you still in the same place on Interstate?

  • Mark Meadows

Thank you Gunther for my first ebike. You said the px cycle bike was like an SUV of ebikes. It totally is. It rides great in the city on the road and can also take almost any off road riding. I have taken on some difficult single track rides, it goes anywhere. I also believe Gunther is the most knowledgeable ebike builder in Oregon. He can make anything you want. If you want an ebike go see PDX Cycle. Buddy

  • David Moise

We had Gunther convert one of our bikes to electric over 2 years ago. With an appointment, he had the conversion done as planned in one afternoon. A motor failure 2 months later was resolved quickly under warranty, and the bike has been solid ever since with over 2000 miles on the clock and tons of smiles. Thumbs up for pXcycles and Gunther's research and good workmanship!

  • Robert Broberg

I've known Gunther for several years. He's done three ebike conversions for me -- adding a Bafang mid drive to a GT Grade, adding a Gospade mid drive system to my Marin 4 Corners, and adding a Gospade mid drive system to my Salsa Journeyman. His demeaner, knowledge, advice, and work have been outstanding, Clearly he's the best ebike conversion specialist in Oregon.

  • Sean Lutzi

Picked up my ebike today. Man it was hard to pull the trigger to even get my bike down to Gunthers shop, but im glad i did. Bike is smooth, quick and very easy to ride. Had a blast today prior to the downpour! If you decide an ebike is right for you, dont hesitate, he backs up his work and is honest. Money well spent and reasonable at that!

  • Timothy Cadman

I bought one of the first E-XC integrated e-bikes that Portland Electric Cycle had to offer. Over the past two years I have upgraded most of the components but the frame, motor, and battery have been steady. Ended up in a crash with a Nissan Armada last spring... I lost a brake lever while the Armada lost an entire door. Solid bike!

  • Duane Martin

I purchased an electric bike from Gunther about a year ago... This thing is amazing! It has tons of power and rides great. I ride it extremely hard and the only thing I had to do the first year was replace a chain. There were some issues with the computer screen and he promptly replaced it for no charge or hassle.

  • Mod Aud

Gunther was able to quickly fix my brakes when my partner stopped by for service on his own bike. My ebike is from another company & he was able to advise me on a couple upgrades I’ve been considering. It was really kind of him to fix it as we were passing through town, I really appreciated it …

  • Matthew Manzi

Gunther is a pleasure to work with. He has unparalleled service and is extremely knowledgeable about ebikes. He has great bikes and I would recommend them over similar ebikes you can get on the internet because they are better bikes and you get great service.

  • Katelin Gallion

Spoke with Gunther about my recently purchased e-bike (Retrospec) due to the brakes squealing. Gunther generously gave me great information about the brakes and was sincerely helpful. Due to his top tier customer service, I absolutely recommend his shop!

  • Richard Gover

Good customer service for a bike and heat already left the shop but when I called he turned around and came right back down to help me out and I really appreciated I'm turning around to me that is great customer service I would definitely recommend.

  • Luke Hotchkiss

Gunther doesn't return phone calls or emails, and isn't there during posted hours when I have visited his shop. I bought two bikes from him during his Indiegogo campaign, and regret it. Good communication goes a long way, and that is missing here.

  • Todd Ames

I had Gunther convert a bike I bought at REI to an electric bike. He did an awesome job and I commute almost every day now, about 10 miles each way. No issues with the install. And I’ve got one of the smoothest and fastest bikes on the road.

  • Jeff Brown

Terrific all around bike! Went from not being much of a bicyclist to doing around 200 miles monthly. Great flexibility on road and over trails too. Well made frame with wielded front and rear racks a big plus!

  • Ed Engler

I mail ordered two EX+ bikes from Gunther. One looked used, was scratched on the frame and had a broken cable mount on the fork. Gunther refused to send new parts or stand behind his product. Shop elsewhere.

  • william adwell

Gunther the owner of this small shop has a big heart, when comes to helping you with anything big or small in your E-biking needs .I found him to very helpful in my needs for parts and friendly service

  • Rachel Jackson

Bad customer service and a bit rude. When I asked him if he had any vegan leather options for my bike upholstery he told me “it puts the lotion in the basket”… what does that even mean?

  • Brook Riddick

Great service and a great bike. If you're looking for a bike that can do a comfortable ride and class 3 speed and you don't need a throttle, I can't recommend it enough

  • Bill M

I paid $1200 for a conversion and it broke and the owner wont even look at it because he says he can't get parts for it because of Covid. Run away from this dump.

  • Jason L

Really knowledgeable, friendly staff, eager to share knowledge about electric bikes and provide you a great fit that's in your budget and meets your needs.

  • Brady Radovich

Gunther is awesome. He's a straight shooter and will tell exactly what's going on and what it will cost you. My wife couldn't be happier with his work.

  • Terry Foster

My friends and I have all had custom bikes built by pXcycle and will keep coming back... if you are a hunter go see Gunther for an amazing bike!

  • tom guillette
