We zijn geweest als onderdeel van een gebedshuis tour vanuit school. De ervaring was vreselijk en allerminst aangenaam voor de kinderen. De meneer die ons de toer gaf, werkzaam als vroegere geschiedenis docent, was uitermate onvriendelijk, bot en geïrriteerd. Hij snauwde de kinderen af tijdens de toer, betichtte hen van disrespect en behandelde hen alsof het volwassenen waren die nauwkeurig de regels volgen. De opmerking:” zo gedraag je je toch ook niet in de moskee of kerk” was onder de gordel. Ik was echt ontdaan na afloop en het gros van de kinderen deelde dat gevoel eveneens. Één tip: als je jonge, actieve, nieuwsgierige kinderen die waarschijnlijk niet meer een synagoge zullen betreden, iets wilt leren wees dan vooral (kind)vriendelijk en doe het spelenderwijs. Wek hun interesse op een leuke manier, de belevingswereld van kinderen is anders. Wellicht advies vragen aan de vrouwelijke, zwangere dame die het wel leuk deed bij de andere groep. Helaas is de negatieve ervaring die de kinderen, en ik als volwassene hebben beleefd in de synagoge, blijvend als eerste en waarschijnlijk ook als laatste indruk. De ervaringen in de kerk en moskee waren werkelijk prettig en uplifting.

Mooie synagoge, die veel geschiedenis navertelt. Als student krijg je korting, waardoor je maar €8,50 betaald. Deze ticket is ook voor het museum aan de overkant én een maand geldig. Het is jammer dat je geen goedkopere losse ticket voor de synagoge kan kopen. De synagoge is zowel van binnen als buiten te bezoeken (je kan er helemaal omheen lopen). Het is een heel groot gebouw zonder verwarming. Dus trek op de koudere dagen goede kleding aan. Het mooie aan deze synagoge is dat hij verlicht wordt met kaarsen (bij mijn bezoek stonden die uit). Er is een audiotour beschikbaar, waardoor je veel extra informatie krijgt. Deze heb ik overigens niet gebruikt. Wij waren er na een uur weer klaar. Al met al een mooie ervaring.

The audio tour has high benefits especially in the area still used by the Jewish community. Sterling silver vintage artifacts are active tools in the daily rituals of Judaism. Bring your own siddur (prayer book). The 15€ ticket includes a visit to the Jewish Museum across the street and the Holocaust Museum which I had to cut from the list due to lack of time. So, 3 museums for the price of one if you start with the synagogue. Public toilets are available on the premises.

Great experience, packed full with history. The audio guide is a must with lots of information. The building itself is absolutely stunning. I highly reccomend visiting this sight, and the ticket cost €17, but do not be scared off by this high price, as it also gets you into the Jewish Historic Museum, the National Holocaust Museum and the Holland Theatre. This means the ticket is excellent value for money as it gets you into 4 places total. This historical sight takes you through the horrific devastation the Jewish population suffered at the hands of the Nazis. It is extremely sad to learn about, but it is worth the visit for the insight into this.

The facility speaks clearly of its long history and the deep religious beliefs help by it's congregants. It is an active synagogue, not a polished, for-display-only structure well worth seeing. It helps to remind people from younger nations of what existed long before their countries began. The only negative was that some of the audio tour stations were not functioning. A bonus...the ticket also provides admission to the Jewish Museum across the street

What a nice place to visit. You learn a lot about Sepharadic Jewish culture and existince in Amsterdam also a chance travel through time and see a great (still active) synagogue which has been preserved for nearly 600 years as it was built. You may also attend to concerts there, be aware you would need your coat in order to stay warm since the synagogue still using 1.000 candles to light and heat the synagogue.

From entrance and behaviour of personel i can say that was nice. Really nice. But from the visiting... Actually here is not a gorgeous place. It was really normal. Normal building with different part of buildings. At the end there is a souvenir shops to buy something(like a juish hat) Remember you can visit 3 more places when you buy ticket of here

A beautiful building well worth visiting. Outside is a statue of a docker, as a memorial to the dockers who went on strike in world war two in an attempt to stop the deportation of Dutch Jews by the Germans. The dockers leaders were shot.

Bought Ticket for the museum and it included a visit here. Me and my girlfriend were very warmly welcomed and had a nice chat with the staff. The Synagogue is very beautiful and really old! With the ticket you buy you have access to the museum, the synagogue and the Holocaust museum :) it's definitely worth a visit!

We visited on a weekday and it eas under construction. I believe this is a must visit place but I think that if there are cinstruction and people can not see and enjoy the place fully, charge should be different

Included with the ticket of the Jewish History Museum across the street. This was a beautiful site. Audio tour included. Make sure you walk around the entire outside of the main building to see all the different areas/rooms that you can also view. Almost left without realizing there was so much more to see.

Het moet blijven worden verteld. Dat de Kristallnacht nog maar de aanloop was naar een verschrikkelijk vervolg. Slechts weinigen voorzagen dat toen. Dat maakte de herdenking van die nacht precies 83 jaar geleden weer even heel duidelijk. Daarvoor was ik, eigenlijk voor het eerst, in de Portugese synagoge.

A very impressive and historical synagogue. The second oldest in Europe and heritage site of a community that suffered persecution in many different places. They are a very welcoming community, you are free to open most doors in the nearby structure and the audio guide has a lot of good information.

Heel bijzonder. Een Synagoge hartje Amsterdam. Gebouwd in 1675 tevens is de aller oudste hebreeuwse bibliotheek " Ets Hachajiem" boom van het leven (wijsheid) Zeer bijzondere synagoge.. er is tot op heden nog immer geen elektriciteit. Op feestdagen wordt de synagoge wel door 1000 kaarsen verlicht.

As part of the Jewish history of the Netherlands a place you must visit. A great collection tells all about Jewish faith as well as about the Portugese Jews who settled in Amsterdam. Impressive how the volunteers welcome you and take care of everything. Don't forget to show respect when entering.

Prachtig gebouw. Maar wat een vochtige gebedsruimte om te zijn! Het rook er echt naar vochtig hout, en muf. Maar voor de rest erg mooi en indrukwekkend, ook de kamers met bibliotheek, en de schatkamers.

For 18$ or 10$ for students you get a two for one special: first being the magnificent Portuguese synagogue and experience it’s rich history and full wooden architecture. With the same ticket head over across the street to the Jewish (joods) museum and read about the history of the country

Prachtig. Een bezoek meer dan waard. Hou wel rekening met het feit dat je een keppeltje op moet. Deze zijn voorhanden. Een zeer mooie inkijk op het rijke Joodse leven! Zeker in combinatie met het Joods Historisch museum. Elk aspect van het jodendom inclusief holocaust komt aan de orde.

Mooie synagoge. Zeker de moeite waard om te bezoeken. Vriendelijk personeel Het Joods Historisch Museum is aan de overkant. Met het ticket voor de synagoge kan je het museum gratis bezoeken.

Such a disappointment to be charged €17 to see this shul. They didn’t offer a tour guide and most places are restricted to go to. The audio is all about Jewish religion. I wanted to hear about the history of the shul. Who gave them a right to charge so much??? Very disappointed!!!

An amazing place in its beauty, and inspiring. There are prayers on holidays and SHABAT. Need to be updated before arriving about the time of Tefila. You have to make sure they hear the knocks on the door from the street, otherwise they will not open. Worth the effort and reach.

This is a great building to have a look around. Very interesting museum inside and somewhere that I had been a couple of times before. The interactive displays are both informative and entertaining. The photography exhibition in the basement area is also very interesting.

For those interested by Jewish history, the Portuguese Synagogue is absolutely a must when visiting Amsterdam. Wonderful renovated place where you can also visit surrounding buildings and deep dive in the life of Portuguese Jewish immigrants in the Netherlands.

Such a beautiful & stunning Synagogue . It's so majestic and spiritual. I had 30 min just for my self to admire this amazing building. If you 're visit Amsterdam make sure you go there. ( easy to get there with tram from Central Station or just walk)

Beautiful synagogue that is still functioning, although it is also a historic site as well. The architecture is beautiful, and the place is very special, highly recommend the visit, and spending some quiet time, listening to the audio tours.

A great insight into Jewish culture and history, very interesting. Reminder of 17th century. It was Europe's largest synagogue that they used it as a munitions dump, which is the main reason that it were not destroyed during the wars.

I have visited a few synagogues in different part of the world, but this one is really impressive and interesting. Apart from the size and architecture, it offers a rare opportunity to go upstairs and take a look from the balcony.

Prachtige synagoge. Ligt in het Joods museumkwartier. Met één ticket kun je alle aangesloten musea in deze buurt bezoeken, ze zijn gratis te bezoeken met een museum jaarkaart. Je hoeft ook niet meer van te voren te reserveren.

It is still functional house of prayer for the Portuguese Jewish people. It is a beautiful building inside out. It was built in 17th century without heat and light. Ans this building is still preserved as it was built.

Dit is een oud culturele joods-Portugese Synagoge, het is een super mooi oud gebouw waar veel over te vertellen is. Er is een museum bij het gebouw maar dat moet je lekker zelf ontdekken! Zeker de moeite waard!

Dit keer de bibliotheek Ets Haim bezocht. Dat kan alleen via een rondleiding, vooraf via internet te regelen. Bijzondere plek met zo'n 30.000 oude boeken en een heel interessant verhaal. Duur 1 uur.

Amazing place to visit. The sinagouge is beautiful. There's no electricity in the main building and the light is coming through the windows or they using the light of candles to light up the place.

Zeer indrukwekkend... ieder bezoek weer... Jammer dat ik niet meer in Amsterdam woon...

Heel indrukwekkend. Koperen kroonluchters met kaarsen. De synagoge heeft geen elektriciteit en wordt in de avond met kaarsen verlicht. Er zijn soms kaarslicht concerten. In en rondom veel te zien.

Prachtig! Zeker gedurende museum nacht met alle brandende kaarsen. Echt een momentje van bezinning.

Wij mochten familieleden meenemen naar de synagoge die dit imposante bouwwerk nog nooit eerder bekeken. Dan zie je wat verbazen in de mens te weeg brengt. Het is en blijft een uniek gebouw.

Deze synagoge is gebouwd in 1672. Alles is nog origineel. Zo een bijzonder gebouw. Maar ook alle gebouwen er omheen. Echt een aanrader. En een adio tour geeft je zoveel informatie.

Bijzonder gebouw. De grote synagoge, de wintersynagoge, de kaarsenkamer het rituele bad. Alles wordt met liefde bewaard en gebruikt door de nog maar kleine Joodse gemeenschap.

This is a true historic site, we loved all preserved details like the candle room and the shofar, it seemed that this was a very vibrant wealthy community in the past

It felt like being physically present in the past. Personally, the mourning room was the biggest highlight for me, having gone through some loss in this life.

Ik was hier nog nooit binnen geweest. Maar tijdens museumnacht ziet het er prachtig uit. Honderden kaarsen en een prettige rustgevende sfeer.

I dont know why wud they ask for ticket for going into Lord's house. Didnt accept cash only card for tickets so wasnt able to get inside.

In zijn soort wellicht goed, maar had er veel meer van verwacht. Heel sober interieur en bar koud (we waren er in december)
