The gym is under new ownership. it seems a dark haired women of advanced age and her wannabe fake "juice head" short stature husband, bought powerhouse as another "investment/toy" (apparently he also moonlights as a DJ at a bagel place.) the attitude and actions from the owners to the front desk are extremely unprofessional. This is but a first in an array of problems that plagues this once glorious "rocky or meat head" gym. LETS TALK ABOUT SAFETY! Most of the equipment (if not all) here has been broken for years and instead of hiring reputable gym professionals to fix the broken machines properly they hire hacks that are unprofessional, unscrupulous friends of the owners for little or no money, hence the quality of the workmanship in which the machines are patched up look terrible. I've observed staff members gorilla glue stuff back together!!! The following includes but not limited to - CARDIO MACHINES THE BIKES - WOBBLE and tilt, THE RESISTANCE IS BROKEN! might as well sit on the couch at home if the there no resistance. )= THE TREADMILLS - The BELTS HAVE NO TREADS. NONE!!! nothing is maintained. major problems on most of the cardio equipment here. BARBELLS EVERY SINGLE BARBELL IS BENT!! It prevents any correct or safe benching, dead lifting or squatting. Basically any exercise that you may need a perfectly straight bar to achieve the perfect rep(s). These bent bar also prevents doing any "rocky or meat head exercises" correctly. FREE WEIGHTS LAWL! SOME WEIGHTS ARE WELDED TOGETHER like the DUMBBELLS and the leg press safety knob. SO NOT SAFE. THE FLOORS IN THE ENTIRE GYM NEED TO CHANGED!!! The rubber mats are worn out and uneven, which prevent proper squatting and deadlifting and any other "rocky and meat head exercises" STUFF AND BROKEN THINGS LIKE MIRRORS, LIGHTS. WILL NOT BE FIXED FOR 6-8 MONTHS AT A TIME. (if ever) one fan got broken and never got replaced. THE MUSIC SELECTION is horrible if you ask to change it they will ignore you. staff members..... a large round nerd gentleman is most unfriendly and unwilling. unless your a hawt chick in which case he will try to give you a free protein shake. THEY NOW accept silver sneakers so be prepped to work out with grandma. if your looking for a hawt young firm person to look at .... look elsewhere my brahs the energy in this place is at a snails pace. literally brah. SO ALL in ALL everybody from the cardio queens to the biggest meat heads will have a problem with the equipment or rather the lack of care that is put into this gym. The RATES used to be better and as soon as new management took over the rates shot up 50 dollars and it didn't go into the gym equipment it seems PS .. NOOOO FREE WIFI!!! ASKED THE ROUND GUY IN FRONT HE SAID THEY DONT HAVE THE PASSWORD. BUT CLEARLY THEY DO BECAUSE ALL THEY PLAY ARE APPS ON THEIR IPHONE THE WHOLE TIME USING THE GYM WIFI .. ITS 2015 FREE WIFI IS EVERYWHERE.....WHY WOULD YOU NOT ALLOW YOUR MEMBERS TO USE YOUR gym wifi??

Great gym that has everything you need to get fit, gain muscle mass, lose weight, or maintain your health. Just a heads up: If you are the Equinox type, then this may not be the gym for you. Personally, I love the basic essentials of this gym. For example, you have (5) flat barbell bench press stations, (3) incline barbell bench press stations, and (1) decline barbell bench press station to choose from. If you are squatting, you have (4) squat racks [(2) in the basement and (2) upstairs] along with (2) Smith machines to choose from. For cardio, they have an abundance of treadmills, stair climbers, elipticals, and stationary bikes; all excellently maintained. The only con is that the men's bathroom is a mess at times. No other gym in Flushing, Bayside, and Whitestone compares to the convenience and price. Lastly, I would recommend the morning time slot. The gym is less crowded and has a more mature group that is laid back. Unfortunately, my schedule does not allow it. As with any other gym, you will still have to occasionally deal with the following people: 1. The person that sits at a machine/equipment texting or surfing the internet as you wait for it to be freed up. Occasionally, you will see the same person sitting in the locker room glued to his phone as others change. 2. The narcissist that is constantly recording or taking photos of themselves, so they can impress on their social media. 3. The 3-5 guys that literally are glued at the hip. Even in the locker room, all members will awkwardly remain in the room until the very last group member gets dressed. 4. The annoying teens that spot each other with weight that they have no business lifting. When your spotter is lifting the weight from the first rep onward, you have no business lifting that weight. 5. The amateur dead-lifters that destroy the barbells. Even worse, the females that belong to this group have no idea that they are adding more inches to their waistline with this exercise. Once again, if you are looking to get fit, gain muscle mass, lose weight, or maintain your health, then I recommend Powerhouse Gym in Bayside.

Spent about a good month in this gym and I think I can somewhat confidently express my opinions about it. This gym is no muss, no fuss - kinda gym that caters to those who wants to lift weights. None of those smoothie bars with twinkling lights on the ceiling to give it an overly aesthetic environment. In short, this gym is great for those who just wants to work out. I cannot express how nice and supportive the staff is. Didn't matter if I went in the morning, afteroon or late at night - all of the staff were attentive and friendly. My workout buddy even lost his Apple Airpods and they took it out of their time to find it for us. The service is impeccable. There are plenty of free weights, and not to mention, lots of squat racks. It shouldn't be a problem to find an area to lift weights. The prices are extremely reasonable, especially favorable to students - full marks on that. Now, the cons. I don't have much to say. Most of them are things that are impossible for them to control without having more staff to help out. This is especially true for the basement floor. The atmosphere of the level floor and basement floor are night and day. Level floor, from what I can tell, has a more friendly atmosphere going on. As for the basement floor, it is usually filled with more of the meatheads. This especially gets annoying when they start dropping free weights and barbells on the floor when doing deadlifts. Granted, the floors are matted but it still makes an insanely obnoxious noise. But, when these meatheads goes up stairs, they are much more careful not to make noise or possibly damage the weights. This only happens because there is no staff to manage the basement floor. I do wish this could be fixed somehow. Another con is that some of the machines are a bit tattered up, mostly due to poor use from gym users. I do try to understand certain things can't immediately be fixed (like the treadmill machines), but would like to see these being fixed in the near future. Overall, great gym! Would recommend other people to try to place out.

Been a member for a little over a month so far. Although I've been working out since I was 21, it's been 16 years since I last belonged to a gym; Needless to say, I was a little intimidated. Thankfully, this place is alright so far. The main area has your typical strength machines and cardio equipment. There's a side area tucked away near the lockers with a few more machines, a place to do stretches, and a basement containing weights and a room for classes (on pause since COVID). I can't speak for the other Powerhouse locations, but this one is a pretty bare-bones gym. It's kind of small, there are no trainers, a lot of the equipment is on the older side and, as mentioned earlier, there are currently no classes. There's a smoothie bar/merch shop up front but, to date, I haven't seen anyone buy anything. In fact, the people at this gym very much keep to themselves. There's a pretty diverse crowd coming here, with most leaning towards the under-35 demo. But most of them just come in, work out, and leave. The prices are fair, and I'll update my review if there's any developments. For now, this is a pretty good, affordable neighborhood gym.

Worked out here regularly for a month in late 2021. No frills, no program/lifestyle being sold. $50/mo (reflects a discount for paying in cash) plus a $10 initiation fee for a noncontract membership. This gym is packed with equipment, most of which has seen better days but is still functional. Top floor is treadmills and machines. Basement is mostly dumbbells/benches (and a workout/dance room). Only 3 squat racks. Luckily I was able to come during off-peak times and rarely waited for a machine. Other clientele generally don't bother you, and are there to work out alone or with friends. There seemed to be people of all ages, colors, and sizes, which is really great. Noteworthy: I saw one of the cleaners (a young woman) during some of my workouts, and the thoroughness with which she always disinfected and wiped down every nook of the weights, bench, etc. was absolutely amazing. The gym definitely looks a bit run down and gritty, but her work gives you some confidence that they're doing their best!

DON'T GET INVOLVE WITH THEM!!!!!!!!me and my sister joined the gym last year. my sister relocated to Greece due to her work and stop by the Bayside location to cancel her membership. The person that she spoke with told her that her account was cancelled. Couple weeks later, she received mail from collection agency since they were unavailable to collect the funds, my sister told them that her account was closed. My sister is in Greece already so I called them again to try to close the account. The person who tool my call had no idea about the policy so he asked me to call the main number.. which I did and they told me that I need to call Bayside for cancellation. The account is not closed yet, about a month and half later ..so hectic..cant wait till my contract is up and never deal with them again. not sure what to do, need to close her account...

Powerhouse is what I consider a real gym. No soft top 40 music. They blast metal or good ass rap. Staff is super chill. Never crowded. No fuss. Joined after Bell Plaza closed and I spent some time at LA Fitness which is the gym equivalent of a politically correct shopping mall. If you like to walk in somewhere bang out the weights and leave this is the spot. It’s the place where people’s top priority is working out, not being seen. Classic bodybuilding gym. If you need a sterile environment and somebody to hold your hand then this isn’t your place. Don’t say it’s a crappy gym cause there’s not a sauna and a juice bar. Go to xsport and get a tan and a happy ending and a pat on the head if that’s what you need. This is a beautiful barebones muscle temple. Bonus thing- juice for life is next door. On point post workout meals.

Need more squat racks. There is wasted space where the day care used to be, that can be a rack. They have 6 preacher curls machines, that's also a waste. They can use that corner with 3 of those for a Deadlift platform. The floors are uneven, even though they re-did the basement a few years back. They have a new owner, great guy, just clueless about certain things. There is even a shortage of pins for all the weight stacks in the gym. Almost every barbell is bent. I'm fairly certain they aren't sure which bar is which. They need to restock with Texas power bars or purchase power bars for all benches, squat bars for all racks, and a deadlift bar for the aforementioned platform I recommend they purchase. They are also some sort of "silver" certified gym. Can't be hardcore in a place that's approved for my grandma.

  • Edward Shim

Clean, friendly, no frills gym with everything you need to get a good lifting/cardio session in. I always come here without fail when I'm back in Bayside and it never lets me down. Staff is always very friendly and the members are there for the most part to work out and are polite as well. Rates are very reasonable too. Definitely compared to places like Equinox in the city this place is a great value and just as good to workout at. One thing I would recommend though is a deadlift platform. I realize the gym caters to a wide variety of folk of different fitness levels, but even just one would make a difference. Also a few of the treadmills are in need of repair, but there are so many when I go that I've never had to wait for one.

  • Shelly M

UPDATE: It was not the equipment or training packages that didn’t impress me. It was the staff. I just wanted to check out the gym with my sister and my friend before buying a membership. We asked one employee in the front if it would be possible for us to tour the gym. Instead of offering to give us a tour and provide us with descriptions of the packages himself, he said “I’ll be following right behind you”. His tone implied he didn’t care less about attracting new members at this gym. Overall, I felt he was rude. He could have at least given us a tour. What is following us around going to do? He was extremely unhelpful. I won’t be considering a membership at any Powerhouse Gym facility.

  • Danny Lam

I've been going to this gym for the past 12+ years now and it meets all of my needs. As its name suggests, this place caters towards those who want to lift weights. If you want spin, yoga, and aerobics classes, you're in the wrong place. The staff is generally not that helpful, but you won't have to deal with them much. The gym itself is generally clean and well lit. The music that plays will depend on who's manning the front desk and what mood they're in. Overall, if you don't need much guidance in the gym and you just want to lift, this gym rocks. Just know that there can be a lot of meatheads working out here, and it can be an intimidating environment for women and workout rookies.

  • Teddy

This is the first time that I visited this gym. Overall it was a pleasant experience. However, I wish the managers would post more photos of the types of equipment available; there is plenty of gym equipment to accommodate people with different fitness goals. Furthermore, I highly recommend they replace some of the barbells with new ones like Ohio Power Barbell by Rogue Fitness. Some of the barbells don't feel secure in my hands due to lack of kurling which can negatively affect grip. As for the staff, they're very friendly and welcoming. The same can be said about the members, too. In conclusion, I recommend this gym. I can see myself as a member in the foreseeable future!

  • Carson Yiu

I started my membership in January 2020, then COVID happened, and the 6 months we lost can't be credited unless I pay for another membership. I basically got robbed the 6 months that wasn't "anyone's" fault. I never asked for a refund because the front desk told me that it's the rule and that's what Tommy's sticking by. Why would I renew if you hold the 6 months that 'everyone' lost? What is the down-side of this rule? Have you thought about it Tommy? A loyal guest leaves and loses 6 months that was already prepaid?! Makes no sense. I heard A LOT of members chatting about how upset they were. I hope more people speak up about this so I don't look like I'm being bias.

  • Andrew Kim

I usually go to LA Fitness, but my brother and his friends work out here so I had to check it out to get that bro pump. This place is like a serious gym bro's gym. Their weights look like they are inscribed with the blood sweat tears of thousands of gym warriors and oozing steroid energy. If you've seen the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "pumping iron" this gym gives off that muscle dungeon vibe that Lou Ferrigno aka hulk worked out at. They also detailed all the machines with a jet black and bmw m-blue color which I really liked. If you wanna get big go here, its probably the best gym around the bayside, whitestone, flushing area.

  • Edwin Johnson

LOVE this gym. Just started my month last week but I really can't get enough of this place. I started out when I was younger at an old school, free-weight, serious gym and have been going there until about 2 years ago when I moved. Since then I've been to LA Fitness and Blink etc. but nothing gets me more motivated and addicted to a good workout like nice classic gym. If you love the serious workout vibe, you'll love this place. If you want pools, basketball courts, racquetball courts and all the extras, then this may not be the place for you. But if you want a consistent no BS workout, this is the place to be.

  • Furqan Mahmood

I've been going to this gym since I was in high school on and off. Its a great gym with a classic theme. The owner of the gym is a good guy. The staff does a good job in greeting guests. Some machines are rare to find and this gym has it. The vibe is nice it has a bodybuilding spirit in here. The cons: the place isn't new so don't expect a fancy gym its for you to get strong and look good. The ventilation is so so especially in the summer and winter. Some of the equipment like barbells need to be replaced. The floor isn't even to me. I feel off balanced at times because of the shock absorbing mats.

  • Johnny l

The gym is very nice feels like a home gym and the guy at the front desk during the closing time is very friendly. One star less because had a bad experience with one of the member who was trying to be tough when I ask about sharing a machine. It doesn’t matter how big you are being nice shows your maturity, usually I tend to ignore people like that. If you are a member doesn’t mean you own the gym. Its good gym and overall a good vibe. I would suggest everyone to give out a try!

  • Mikhail Ignatov

60$ a month is unreasonable for this kind of equipment quality / variety. The equipment will suffice for basic workouts benchpress, deadlift etc, but don't expect to find things like rowing machines. Cardio area is really cold in winter, feels like there is no heating at all. Despite the amount of fans, the air is still very stuffed, especially downstairs, not even sure if they have any AC's. PS. wouldn't complain if they had like 30-40$ a month, but 60 is a serious overkill.

  • Kat Como

Love this gym!!! Its right across from my son's school so I drop him in the morning and get to workout an hour before work. Great staff, great equipment and rates extremely reasonable. I joined for 6 months but will now go a full year since its working out so well. The owner is very knowledgeable about fitness and has already recommended various workout routines to help with weight loss goals and muscle building. Glad to call Powerhouse Gym of Bayside my gym!!!

  • Samad Afzalee

I have been a member here since 2017. Gym is absolutely fantastic. Very great employees behind the counter, amazing pre-workout/protein/hydration options, their merchandise is very appealing & comfortable, spacious, many different machines/free weight/barbells & has dumbbells which go to 200lbs for the big boys. The owner Tommy is very kind as well & maintains this gym very effectively. Will forever train at PHG BAYSIDE!

  • Jamie

I started a few days ago and it’s rlly nice it’s 60$ for one month u get free lockers with ur membership u need to be 15 and up no parent needed to sign up BRING ID the weights, dumbbells etc are in the back the stairs, treadmill are in the front and staff are nice and respectful bathroom showers and lockers are all the way in the back turn left into a hallway But be warned u might see ur classmates there

  • David Chou

Typical neighborhood gym: nothing fancy (nothing specifically for the neck or wrists, for example) but has got all the basics. Price is good, among the lowest anywhere, never mind this area where it's the only "conventional" (not CrossFit or pilates studio) gym around. As usual, too, however, very few seem able to match dumbbells and weight-plates with their appropriate stowage spots!!

  • Kai Yang

Been coming here for the past year on and off when I'm back from school. Gym is no frills. One thing I wished Tom would put in the gym are power racks. They recently added a half rack in the basement but honestly one isn't enough and bars need to be replaced as most of the bars are bent. Other than that, if you are serious about lifting, there is nothing like it around 5mile radius.

  • Brent Morden

I’ve been coming to Powerhouse Bayside for several years. Excellent gym with everything I need to get a solid workout, cardio or weightlifting. Their staff are friendly and keep the machines clean. The regulars all know each other here. I enjoy supporting a local family-owned gym as well. Always great seeing owner Tommy on the floor. Overall, Powerhouse is a fantastic value!

  • Nick Simos

This gym has everything you need. I travel from Astoria to Bayside to train there. It’s a lifters gym. Also has plenty of cardio machines and basement had studio with classes. Definitely recommend it. Clean, staff is professional, members are friendly as well..worth the price. Yearly fee Averages around $30 a month. Most fancy gyms want over $60. Can’t go wrong

  • Jennifer Singer

I recently started to work out again (health issues) and came back to Powerhouse. This place is by far the best gym in the area. The owner knows how to run the place unlike many other gyms. If your really into working out, this place is for you. If your all about fancy equipments, chit chatting, and gyms with no rules, then this ain't the place for you.

  • Gustavo Zylberberg

Great neighborhood gym. I've been a member for the past 6 months and appreciate the vibe that Tommy (owner) has created. The desk staff, maintenance, and Tommy himself greet you by name every morning, a small detail that embodies the type of business he runs. Has all the basics you'll need, complete with a respectful clientele and positive environment.

  • Melissa Cardona

I absolutely LOVE Powerhouse Gym in Bayside! Not only is the staff friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient, but the gym itself is also amazing! I especially love that they have a shake bar and I am able to purchase Shakeology drinks... YUM!! I look forward to attending their gym, daily and utilizing the facility equipment to get me in tip-top shape!!

  • Ken Weiss

If you don't need yoga or aerobic classes, you are not training to be a competitive body builder, you just want an attractive place, with first class equipment, that is very comfortable and safe, and your goal is to be fit and look good, Planet Fitness in Great Neck is a far better choice, than Powerhouse is in Bayside NY.

  • Kel M

Great all around gym With so many fitness gyms these days, powerhouse is one of the few that offers everything for serious lifters. Great location, plenty of parking early, lots of free weights and the staff is not rude unlike other gyms I have been to. Definitely recommend it to anybody serious about building their body.

  • Danda316

May just be the best gym in Queens. Tommy and the staff do a phenomenal job of maintaining the cleanliness of the gym and the safety of all the members during normal times and even more so during this pandemic. If you are looking for a great place to workout and a gym with a great culture, this is the one. Enjoy!

  • Alex Pho

Has every equipment that I'm looking for. Only problem is that the equipment is very rusty and dirty. I grabbed onto the handles of the seated calf raise machine and I just have so much dirt on my hands. One of the pipes downstairs is also dripping water. Overall, feel very mixed about this establishment.

  • Matt Lee

Old equipment, benches are ripped up big holes in the leather for the last six months that I've been there . Overpriced because it's the only gym in the neighborhood. Lockeroom is tiny Most Staff is nice . It gets the job done but not worth the money especially when you compare it to any other gym.

  • Paul Frlic

I've been to alot of gyms and I honestly can say this is the best gym in queens. It has all the best equipment and the staff is very friendly. it has a very home environment when you walk in and the owners are always available when needed...I won't go anywhere else 5 stars!

  • Josh Jeong

Been here for years and never had an issue with anything. They have all the free weights and machine necessary for you to achieve your goals. In my opinion, so much better than commercial gyms! By far, my favorite gym I've joined in my life. The owner, Tommy is a great guy!

  • K O

True gem, clean, well kept and has a lot of quality equipments. I have been to quite a few gyms in the area. This is the best one so far! Tommy (the owner) is very nice and makes the customers feel welcomed as soon as you step in. I’ll keep coming. Highly recommend!

  • Seth Pachman

Great gym to get a solid workout in. Heavy equipment that many other facilities do not have. Tommy, the owner, is very welcoming and has created a family like feeling throughout the gym. If you are looking to get a great lift in, this is the place for you.

  • Deborah Guest

Decent sized gym with all the necessary equipment you need. However it is very rundown, mats are falling apart and it just generally looks like hasn't been well maintained for years. There is also only one class available each day.

  • Laura DiMarcello

Great Place and local in the neighborhood to workout. Staff is always friendly and helpful! Good nutrition advice and feedback from staff. Owner is friendly and works with everyone! I love the personal training and workouts!

  • Nick Nazamy

Been a member for over 5 yrs, if you're looking for a real gym without the fluff , the wannabe gym types that usually go to Bally's or planet fitness and train properly then you should give this place a try. Old school.

  • Richardson Taylor

A dam good place to work out and bulk up. Not like others. Here, you sweat, you grunt, you get bigger. No pain, no gain. Let others watch you, that's because they use that energy you exude to help them build their body.

  • Sierra S

Not a great environment to workout in at all. Many people have their masks down including the employees. The bathrooms smell terrible and are dirty. The equipment is old and ripped up. Not to mention, parking sucks.

  • Rubeena Mansoori

I like it for its best bang for money. Staff may not be as friendly as you wish for but who cares I do what I am there for. There are some nice people too. Equipment are fine too. Overall It's good gym for anybody.

  • young lee

The last hardcore gym left in Queens. It has pullover machine, 200lb dumbells, lots of squat racks and benches. People who actually workout fornresult will appreciate this place, and the owner Tommy is a great guy.

  • frank deto

For Me It's GREAT ! I have been in gyms mostly during the winter . I tried a few . I like this one because it's friendly and the staff keeps it clean . They also help you right away if needed ! I give it 5 stars !

  • Ralph Huang

Price is getting more expensive, but it is the only decent gym around. Equipment for deadlift and metal plate need to be updated, and basement really needs some renovation, but otherwise it is fine.

  • Thanasi Asimakopoulos

Been going since I was 15. I love this gym and I love the atmosphere. The owner Tommy is a great guy with much respect to the fitness community. He has been doing a fantastic job pre and post COVID.

  • Joann Tassone

Well maintained, clean gym with a personal trainers to fit your needs. The gym has an amazing staff and a great location as well as the specialist equipment to get you the best workout.

  • Gabriel Espinoza

Went here some days by myself and even with some friends. The day pass is $15. There is a lot to unfold about this gym. I've been trying to find some new gyms and came across this one.

  • Samia Jalil

$60/month and they can’t hire a cleaning crew? The women’s bathroom is absolutely filthy and I feel uncomfortable even having to use it. Rather go to the cafe next door and come back.

  • Manuel Blissett

Its very cramped the equipment is basic and worn but does still work the parking situation is not great and the price doesn't reflect. Just shows what a lack of competition brings

  • R Berenholtz

The best gym in the whole Nyc tri-state area. Clean machines. Always pins in the weights and nice staff. Very professional and trained well. The shakes are to crave for!

  • Paul Biramontes

This place is old and no frills..if your a muscle head this is your place. Equipment is old as dirt but if you lift things up and the put them down..sign up.

  • Matt

Great gym. Friendly and helpful staff, wide assortment of protein drinks, powders, shakes, pre-workouts, etc. LOTS of machines and free weights.

  • zo maq

Been training here for 12 years now. Excellent gym to sign up at. They have all the free weights/cardio equipment & gym necessities you need.

  • Kerry R (Ker)

Very clean, everything is sanitized and they follow the social distancing guidelines. The staff is very helpful. Great place to work out!

  • Danny

2 floors with cardio and machines on the first floor and free weights in the basement. Locker room was a tad bit too small for my liking

  • Kim Wong

I am a stay-at-home mom I will like to attend to this gym did they offer childcare and if so how much including a 6 month membership??

  • Leo Mayrhofer

Nice oldschool gym. Great atmosphere but very worn down. Changing room and showers really need to be renewed , very badly!!!
