I'm doing a mechanic search and had to check in on my old mechanic, Precision Auto, to see how things are with them. Realized that I've never left a review -- so here it is: Bluntly put, the family over at Precision Auto Repair runs the best mechanic shop in Northern California. I can confidently say this in my 20 years of car ownership of four different Subarus across multiple towns and cities from SF to the Nevada state line. John, Jr, and Dad serviced two high-mileage cars of mine. There's a Nathan for You episode where the business plan is to put a mechanic on a lie detector when diagnosing car trouble, and I think we've all felt this when working with some mechanics that are out there - I certainly had a mechanic in college who took advantage of me. Precision is different. Precision can expertly translate complicated mechanical issues to the typical car owner in a way that even the most novice car owner can both understand and make their own judgment on where one should prioritize fixing their car. There are those mechanical issues, especially with older or high mileage cars, that can lead to endless money pits to fix. Precision recognizes this and provides honest, transparent guidance to servicing your vehicle without just opting to drain their customers' bank accounts if service doesn't make sense as a vehicle reaches the end of its serviceable life. In a city like SF, where everything comes at a premium price, it's nice to know that there are still businesses like Precision Auto whose mission is to deliver fair service and truly affordable prices. Car ownership comes with unexpected and hidden costs - Precision does their best to give customers the most value for the money paid to fix their car. I've never felt overburdened by car trouble expenses when working with Precision. Even when I couldn't afford work that needed to be done on my car, Precision helped to set expectations on timelines and car usage until more severe mechanical issues would arise when putting off car work which helped me in budgeting and planning for necessary service. When you drive your car into their garage, they make it a point to greet you personally and build trust with you as they diagnose your car. John had a knack for knowing the time of year and what I would be doing with my car during that season. He would diagnose and provide service recommendations based on the usage level I would be putting the car through for the next couple of months, whether it is winter driving or long summer road trips. Precision would work around my schedule and offer secure overnight storage if my job prevented me from same-day dropoff or pickup (while having no problem with quick same-day service if it was an easy enough job). They are great at communicating findings and cost through text. While my car was being worked on throughout the day, I would always know precisely what the issue was, how important it was to fix it, and what the cost was. Working with Precision made me a better car owner in the level of detail they would communicate, along with the driving type impacts on mechanical systems. I've never had more trust in a mechanic to keep my car in its best shape while knowing that they won't overcharge me for a service or where the service doesn't make sense. When my dealer service plan runs out on my new Subaru, I'll make the trip from Oakland to Precision Auto to keep my car running at its best.

first off, i am not a car guy and couldn’t tell you the first thing about auto repair. i brought my honda accord to precision because i needed a few things done for a tune up. after 4 hours of precision having my car i get a text with quotes for the work that needed to be done. the very first quote was to get the air fuel ratio sensor replaced (the check engine light had come on recently and this was the reason) at the price of $449.03. i am familiar with this part because i had taken the car to another mechanic for something unrelated and he had noticed it needed replacing and told me i can easily do it myself and it wouldn’t make sense to charge me labor for something so simple. the sensor can be purchased at an auto parts store for under $100, and is located in the very middle of the engine compartment, easily accessible. to replace this part requires simply unscrewing it and screwing the new one in. that’s it. nothing removed, no special tool, just literally opening the hood, unscrewing one bolt, screwing the new part in, unplugging the old sensor and plugging the new one in. i went to the auto parts store, bought the part, and in LITERALLY 5 minutes had the new one on myself. to charge $350 for labor to do this is absolutely criminal, so i elected to take my car somewhere else for the rest of the work, and ended up paying precision $50 for the diagnostic check. i don’t know how you justify charging $350 for a few turns of a wrench and 5 minutes of time, other than trying to capitalize on the ignorance of your customers. shout out to gage auto on bush street for being up front and letting me know how easily i could do the work myself instead of overcharging me for the simplest part replacement ever.

Folks, going to tell you a story. I was out visiting California from Arkansas on a "bucket list" trip. 2 days in LA, 1 in San Fran, 1 day in Seqouia National Park/night in Vegas, Grand Canyon, then on back home. The mountain driving KILLED my brakes. After doing Coastal Hwy 1 up from LA, my brakes & rotors were TOAST! These guys got me in at 9:30am and out by 1pm. 4 NEW BRAKES & ROTORS. Called my dealership back home and they said the price was EXCELLENT! Missed the redwood trees but rolled into Vegas by 10pm for a great night! WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE & APPRECIATION. Look no further San Fran! Best kept secret in the bay is on Divisadero Street. FYI - I called 4 places that morning and was told maybe the next day service or even the following week. NOTHING BUT LOVE FOR THESE FINE PEOPLE!

My car hasn’t looked this good since it was new! A few months back my car got stolen and needed some work. I picked Precision Auto Repair because they are certified with my insurance company, the location was convenient to the city, and they offer detailing. They were incredibly easy to work with, and I got updates every step of the way. Excellent customer service. While my insurance covered the balance, the total for the bill was very reasonable. Once all the parts were in my car was finished quickly and it’s sparkling like new. I’ll definitely be back the next time I need a detail or any body work.

Initially it took them more than a day to respond to my query email, but then the process of booking my oil change and wiper blade installation was really easy. I brought my Volvo XC40 in at 8am and they said it'll be ready in the afternoon, but at 11am I already got a text saying the vehicle is ready. Pricing is really reasonable and final figure was what was actually quoted. Nice friendly attitude, they even smile, imagine - auto mechanics and they are not miserable. Overall, very pleasant experience, I'll be coming back.

John and the guys at Precision did a great job for me. I had bought a high mileage used car in a pinch, I knew it had some problems but really needed it to get back to work as an essential worker. I explained my situation and John totally got it- I needed all the work done in one day so I could get back to work. He had a couple guys work on it for a solid 8 hours and had it back to me by 5 pm that day running like a top! They did so much, including some details that weren’t even in the estimate. Never before have I felt so compelled to write a review...John and his team at Precision Auto Repair on Divis are the best mechanics I've ever dealt with. John is methodical in his troubleshooting methods and incredibly thoughtful and articulate in his explanations detailing how he came to the diagnosis and what he feels will remedy the situation. My review is based on multiple visits and vehicles spanning 2 years. I would and will recommend this shop to everyone.

Having recently moved to SF I am so happy to have found Precision Auto Repair. Having a good, trustworthy mechanic is on par with having a good shrink or hair stylist. Jiacomo took the time to address every item of concern, explained everything in detail, including what was not an urgent fix, and completed the repair in a timely fashion with excellent results. My wife and I have taken our vehicles (VW GTI and Mazda CX5) here for a couple of years now. John and his son have always been incredibly helpful and do a terrific job. I feel like they are always being honest with their assessment, while also looking out for the longevity of my car. More often than not, they are willing to take a look at my car same day, and are very quick and responsive in keeping me up to date on the progress. Would highly recommend!

This is the best auto repair shop I've had the pleasure of using - not just in SF, but across the country! Family run, very prompt service, detailed, and always willing to help. Services have all been top notch, on time, and fairly priced. I don't leave many reviews but really feel the need to call out how amazing the guys at Precision are! They're also located right next to a Lyft bike docking station which makes dropping your vehicle off a breeze.

Family owned and operated for generations. I myself have been super pleased for two cars now. And I keep my cars a long time because of the work John's team does. Super honest, high quality, and very reasonable prices have been my experience time and time again. I've recommended Precision Auto to my friends and they've been pleased, too. John and his guys are hands down the best shop you'll ever find. After bringing it in a couple times for smaller things, my car broke down and needed some work that was outta my budget at the time. John still let me take my car and come back to pay him when I got paid. Couldn't believe his generosity. Customer for life. Theyre always super fair and will never overcharge you.

I grew up working at my families commercial auto dealership (big trucks) so I know a good shop and mechanic when I see one. John and his crew are absolutely top notch and extremely fair. Always gives detailed explanations and constantly working to be fair on price and delivery of promises. One of the best auto shops I've ever used and won't take my vehicle anywhere else.

Recently, I had a peak new parent moment when my tire blew out on Divisadero amidst the wailing of my tiny newborn from her carseat. Fortunately, this shop was only a couple blocks away. We pulled in, these folks kindly fixed us up, and we were back on the road in a matter of minutes. We missed the doctor's appointment, but I lived to parent another day.

They were very fast on the diagnostic, but whatever they said was wrong with my breaks wasn't on my report. So I had to take it somewhere else to find out what's wrong with it and get the work done there.

The process is impossible top to over pay for original Ford rather than OEM. my idea to bypass finally done but the charge was 600 for a beater car for a reservoir. Only use for emergencies.
