Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque (Mosque of the Old Fort) is a mosque located inside the premises of Purana Qila (Old Fort) in Delhi, the capital of India. After Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun, he occupied Purana Qila. There, he built the mosque for his private use, which became a "symbol of his royal aspiration".The mosque is believed to have been constructed in 1541 CE. The mosque is located inside Sher Shah Suri's fort, Purana Qila, which became his fortification after he won Delhi. It is one of the structures beside the Sher Mandal (which is attributed as Humayun's library) present in the fort. The fort is located near the Delhi zoo. The mosque's history is derived from various accounts of contemporary historians. The Tarikh-i-Sher Shahi, written by Abbas Sarwani, says that Sher Shah Suri built the mosque in 1540, from "gold, lapis lazuli" and other precious stones. He is said to have built the mosque to "revive" the city's status "as a major city". Historian MC Joshi argues that although Sher Shah completed the mosque, it was originally "designed" and its construction was started by Humayun. Joshi believes that Sher Shah built the upper part of the mosque which included the dome. The marble works of the exterior walls could be attributed to his son Akbar, because the geometric works are of his time and not of pre-Akbar era. The use of half-dome, pointed arches represents "A strong Mughal association".Humayun is credited with "introducing pietra dura" works in the liwan and mihrab. The mosque is built in the Afghan style of a congregational mosque. It is a symbol of the architectural tradition of "a five bay mosque", a concept which was developed during the Sayyid and Lodi dynasty times. The mosque lacks any inscription. Its length and breadth is 51 metres (167 ft) and 13.5 metres (44 ft), respectively. It has a height of 20 metres (66 ft) (which includes the dome). The mosque was built by "core masonry" with stone rubble "bonded with lime mortar". Blocks of quartzite, marble and red sandstone were also used in the construction process. The internal rectilinear hall is laterally divided by five arches. The external facade comprises the same number of arches. The central arch is sunken "in an arched recess" which is contained within a rectangular frontage called liwan. The mosque was originally intended to be constructed from marble but as it ran out of supply, red sandstone had to be used.
“This fabulous fort has so much to offer in terms of history and architecture. A must visit while in Delhi.” This beautiful and strong fort, situated next to Zoological Garden, is rich in history and is a good specimen of architecture and culture of times of Mughal ruler Humayun and Sher Shah Sur. Humanyun started building this fort and lost it to Sher Shah who added to its splendor and defence This was recaptured by Humayun who in turn died here from a fall from the stairs of Sher Mandal. It is better to start seeing this fort by walking to the front of Talaqi Darwaza which one can reach by the side of the lake outside the fort. Inside the fort, the Bada Darwaza, Qila-i-Kuhna Masjid, in terms of its architecture and extensive use of marble, both black and white and sandstone, Sher Mandal, Hamaam or Royal Bath, archaeological excavations of artifacts going back to Mahabharat times, Humayun Darwaza, Baoli or Step-well and inside of Talaaqi Darwaza are main attractions. In the evenings, a brilliant light and sound show, Ishq-i-Dilli is held on the lawns of the fort. While going out of the fort, across the road, one can see Khair-ul-Masjid and Lal Darwaza, the contemporary structures. All in all, a beautiful fort to visit with lots of history and architecture.
Purana Qila is one of the oldest forts in Delhi which was built by Sher Shah Suri. & was still incomplete at time of Sher Shah's death in 1545. During the Partition of India, Purana Qila became the site for refuge. The entire area is huge and neat and clean and well maintained. Do not forget to visit all the three Gates, Humayun, Talaqi & Bara Darwaza. Other attractions are Qila-I-Kuhna Masjid, Sher Mandal & a Museum. Sher Mandal was used as a library where Humayun is said to have tripped on its tortuous stairs and tumbled to his death in 1556. Entire area is good for photography. Entrance fee is nominal and no charges for still photography. One can spend 2 hrs, keep enough food and water specially, if children are with you. Please go through the history before visit to really understand the importance of the place. Sound and light show is being arranged daily after sunset displaying history of Indraprastha through New Delhi. Do visit.
Good place for historical perspective. Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque meaning Mosque of the Old Fort is a single-domed mosque located inside the Purana Qila in Delhi. The Tarikh-i-Sher Shahi by Abbas Sarwani, says that the mosque was built by Sher Shah Suri built in 1540. Some historians believe that the mosque was originally built by Humayun and its upper part which includes its dome, was built by Sher Shah Suri. However, The architectural work inside the mosque neither matches Sur nor Humayun's work. Some of the similar work can be found in the tomb of Ibrahim Khan Sur built by Sher Shah Suri but the use of geometric works on its marble wasn't famous at that time and was probably added later by Akbar.

It simply blew my mind to find this exquisite mosque set within the Old Fort complex. Built in 1541 CE by Sher Shah Suri, this mosque was used for prayers by the royal families of both the Suri's and the Mughal's who came after them. Structure is well maintained by Archaeological Survey of India, it was neat and tidy and very well maintained. No prayers are offered here anymore hence you can visit any day but I do hope decorum of proper dress code is maintained as it still is a house of God. No seprate tickets required and due to presence of many inclines even persons of reduced mobility can visit.
This is a mosque, but no one is treating it as a religious place, please show some some respect and put your shoes outside. Respect every religion, this mosque is constructed by Mughals its beautiful mosque quranic verses are written on the walls. People go inside for photo shoots. Its located at the centre this place is surrounded by walls as it were used by Mughals and rooms are also attached with wall, used at that time by mughals. This is nice place go visit and have fun but please show some respect for masjid. You will also find lot of people over there enjoying the beauty
Amazing Mosque! This Mosque is situated inside Purana Qila near National Zoological park. In the reign of Humayu, this city was established by Humayu and called Deenpanah city. After defeating Humayun in the battle of bilgram, Shershah renamed this city and now it is called Purana Qila. This Mosque was built by Shershah Suri in 1541, the architecture of this mosque is amazing. Some parts of famous movie Veer Zara were also shoot in this Mosque.

Attractive mosque in the grounds of the Old Fort. The single-domed Qila-i-Kuna Mosque, was built by Sher Shah in 1540. An example of a pre-Mughal design. It has extensive use of the pointed arch seen in its five doorways with the 'true' horseshoe-shaped arches. It was designed for the use of the Sultan and his courtiers. Then use of marble in red, white and slate is used for the calligraphic inscriptions on the central iwan and marks a transition from Lodhi to Mughal architecture. At one time, the courtyard had a shallow tank, with a fountain.
This is part of Purana Qula - a beautiful old fort with ancient history, which ended up as the centre of the sixth city of Delhi. It is a beautiful space for picnicking, hanging out, or just escaping the noise and hustle and bustle of Delhi. There is a small lake just outside the fort where one can get paddle boats. This is a great place to come with family and / or chill. It can get quite busy on the weekend. Definitely one of the destinations to visit if you are in Delhi.
Very old and beautiful structure made by Sher Shah Suri in 1541. It is situated inside the premises of Purana Quila. The structure of the mosque is made of red stones at outside and marbles at interior side. The beautiful art is also there on the walls of the interior of this mosque. The top hill position of the mosque give a top view of the nearby area.

This mosque build by the Shershah of Sur dynasty. This mosque is a good example of a composite Indo-Muslim architecture. Bule tiles and quartz stones are used. At time of partition when purana qila complex converted into a refugee camp this mosque use as school building for refugee children.

Qila-i-kuhna Mosque situated inside the premises of Purana Qila Mathura Road Delhi India. Mosque is very beautiful and decorated built by Sher Shah Suri (1538-45) in 1541 AD during the Suri dynasty in Islamic architecture.
Beautiful mosque but in ruins. Not maintained as no prayers taking place in it. Sad state of affairs as sanctity of mosque is not protected. It is being insulted by people wearing shoes and writing graffiti all over it.
One of the most important mosque on architecture and literary point of view in Medieval Period!
