After moving to LA for 10 years I became half Mexican living off of tortillas and frijoles. And with time my expectations go higher and higher and now I can tell what's good Mexican food and what is so so. El Gordo met with my expectations with the Huegos Ranchero I was looking forward to. Eggs are on point with half cooked yolks. The rice and beans taste fresh and I like that rice is not heavily seasoned. I wish it was at a more inviting plaza strip but hey what do you expect in Boyle Heights? I'm giving them 5 stars.

Pésimo, pedí comida por uber, el café llego a la mitad del vaso,no traía sobres de azúcar ni crema, ordene pankes igual no venia la miel y de pilón falto la salsa y las tortillas, se me hace tan injusto que uno pagando un precio elevado y para que no llegue tu pedido completo,llame al restaurante para que tuvieran más cuidado y el joven me conteste yo no puedo hacer nada pide tu dinero en otro lado y en ningun momento le hable sobre dinero, $ 36 dólares a la basura como que si auno le regalaran el dinero

This little hole in the wall is very good. Not alot of seating due to covid but they have A very extensive menu. Very authentic Mexican food, one of my go to places to eat before work and I work at A very Exquisite Mexican Restaurant. I stumbled upon to this place thinking it was the "El Gordo" taco place from Tijuana but it was a small authentic restaurant that Im sure to comeback! I didnt know what to order since everything was written in Spanish, i wanted Lengua (Tongue meat) and he cooked up a plato de Lengua w/fried eggs on top! Phew~~~! Wow that was a Great Meal!!! Im glad i came here and ready for some more later :)

I was actually at that plaza to get a donut but there was something about this place that called to me. I got the pollo a la plancha and it was great. The rice and beans were good too. If I'm ever in that area again, I will stop by. Almost forgot, they have a big variety of Mexican sodas...so good. Sidral mundet is my favorite...apple soda.

I went to "El Gordo" since my kids were little. The food tastes good and the red salsa is also good! The owner Al Rodriguez is a great person, he is very courteous, nice and helpful to his customers! I just wish that they could bring back the "Chicharron Verde" platter and the aguas frescas (Horchata, Jamaica, Tamarindo).

This place is so good and authentic!! We have made it one of our favorite spots. We come every time we are in town. Nothing fancy just a good mom and pops Mexican restaurant with good food!! Only like 6 tables but it doesn't disappoint!!!

This is one of my favorites restaurant in the neighborhood,the service is great,and the food has that flavor kind like grandma's cooking, I recommend chilaquiles whit meat and egg is delicious,and also chicharron en salsa Verde,sorry no photos for this,but is delicious.
