Lions and tigers and bears... oh my!! It's been a long time since I've been to the San Francisco Zoo, and did I have a blast! You'll need at least 4-5 hours to see everything, so wear comfy shoes because you will do a lot of walking! Also, they no longer give out paper maps, but you can take a picture of their posted map on-site or print a downloadable map from their website. Whatever you do, be sure to familiarize yourself with the zoo's layout ahead of time to make the most of your visit. The food is pricey, so you may want to eat beforehand or bring your own food and drinks to enjoy at one of their many picnic tables. There are so many great photo opportunities here! I especially enjoyed seeing: the penguins hanging out on their little island and swimming about, the cuddly koala clinging to a branch, the little wolverine darting around its bushy habitat, the expressive gorilla who looks intelligently back at you (and has all these great camera poses for you, too), and the lovable sloth slowly climbing along winding branches. Oh, and for $7, you can ride the adorable Little Puffer steam train! One could easily spend a whole day here! If you plan to visit the zoo at least twice a year, you may want to consider becoming a member for extra savings! It was so much fun! I hope to go back again soon! Until next time...

Nice small zoo but lots of things were closed for construction. Beautiful weather and location but a bit confusing to find the entrance due to Google maps taking us behind it and the construction surrounding. They had cool bear exhibits, snow leopard, gorillas, red panda, koalas, and a bug exhibit my kids enjoyed. The penguin exhibit was their best one by far. When we went, lots of animals were not visible unfortunately. And it's worth noting- zoo closes at 5 but they start closing things off at 4 and the playground gets closed off at like 430. It's hard to figure out where to pay for parking if you've bought tickets online in advance and you need to show it to get out (you can buy from the membership office which closes early and the ticket counter). Great gift shop at the entrance. Limited food options with high prices like $15/slice of pizza and long lines. Definitely recommend bringing your own food with you. Lots of bathrooms but they're not the cleanest. They had maps posted everywhere which made it more easy to find your way.

Most of the Zoo animal attractions seems to be empty. And even with the very few animals they have, all if them seems to be not doing anything, most of them are sleeping for the most part and the others feels like you are watching just models. I guess they were just been lazy . They should add at-least elephants, tigers, crocs, gators, some active monkeys, some sea creatures. Even the rainforest section seems to be dull and boring. Their advertised Sloth was nowhere to be found. We thought we were going to spend the whole day there, but we were pretty much done in 1 and an half hour. There was nothing that interesting to saw. I would recommend Oakland zoo over this at any-day. They got better collection of Animals. Plus I feel paying $100+ for a family including parking is way overpriced for the attractions they are offering. I have visited free zoos having better attractions than this one. Not worth the visit.

It’s $25 a ticket for adults plus the $10 parking fee. Parking was easy with lots of close spots. I went right at opening on a Thursday and there was no wait. People who have the year round passes get to go in a half hour early. They don’t give out maps anymore you have to use the widely spaced signs or take a picture of one. Lots and lots of animals to look at. They even have a bug room with lots of little critters to check out. The penguin enclosure was fun. You got to watch them swim around and play in water. The poor koala’s were kept in these small glass cages separated from each other. They weren’t even in an actual enclosure. They looked depressed. All the machines that you push the button to learn about the animal were broken. The ones at the koala cage was making an awful reacting squeal noise. The others just had the buttons ripped off so you couldn’t use them. Very disappointing.

Wow! I haven't been here since a child until yesterday! This zoo is reasonably priced, and if an EBT cardholder offers discount tickets of only $3.00 per person! What a steal! Parking is only $11.00 during the weekdays and only $13.00 on the weekends. There are a few eateries within the zoo, but you are also allowed to bring your own food and beverages in. Keep in mind that no glass bottles or alcohol are allowed in, however the serve alcohol at the eateries. They have a huge carousel to ride that does cost, but just a few bucks. Also, a train that takes you around the zoo that is pretty neat, again, for a small extra fee. They have a great, clean picnic area too for those who are bringing their own food in. Restrooms located throughout.. It features a huge playground for those rambunctious kiddos! The zoo seems to be well kept, and the animals seem to be well taken care of. The staff is very nice and there are lots of animals to see!

We went to the SF zoo for Memorial Day weekend. The ticket prices were around 150 for our family of 5. I purchased the unlimited year long membership for $30 more. My kids love the zoo so I figured this was well worth it. The parking lot was full. The parking would have cost us $13, but we found a free space along the beach across the street. We had our tickets in advance so we skipped the huge line. The last time we came here the food was mediocre and expensive. We brought a backpack with our lunches and plenty of water. The animals were really active this particular day and we really enjoyed the enormous playground just before we left. This zoo is smaller compared to others, however, there was plenty to see. My feet were tired nonetheless, and we made some great memories. We will definetely be back.

Honestly don't know how on earth this zoo gets 4.4 stars... The most run-down and dilapidated zoo I have been to. Management is running this place into the ground. Weeds and grass everywhere, half the enclosures are empty, buildings haven't had any upkeep or maintenance in a long,long time let alone preventative maintenance. Something's really not right at this zoo... The photos I posted are just the tip of the iceberg. Signs have faded everywhere, some are missing/rusted. My families favourite was the grass filled fountain. Where is all the money going?? A complete revamp of management might just be the start. Someone needs to fix this place for future generations to come... And nothing does that better than fresh sets of eyes.

The animals are fantastic, but this zoo has definitely seen better days. I visited this zoo 15 years ago, with many of the same exhibits, and the buildings were well kept and cared for. Now the park and much of the area around the park is depressed and run down. The homeless situation in San Francisco is out of control, with impromptu tent cities everywhere, including near the zoo. For one of America's iconic cities with many of America's wealthiest residents, the rich clearly don't care to help their society avoid these tragedies. Though my kids loved the animals, I have to say seeing SF so dirty and run down makes me sad for it's people, California, and the USA.

We hadn't been to the SF Zoo in several years and we were kind of disappointed on this most recent visit. The zoo grounds looked overgrown and just not kept well. A lot of things were closed, and quite a few of the exhibits weren't open. It was definitely not worth the $50 we paid to get in. We tried to do the nature walk because there were signs up that it was open but when we got to the entrance it was completely blocked off and looked like it had been that way for awhile. Maybe they're understaffed like a lot of places. Whatever the reason, it was really sad to see how much it had changed with our last visit.

If you buy a city pass, don’t wait in the ticket window area, you can bypass that and they’ll scan your ticket inside. The signs weren’t clear so we waited for like 15 mins in a very long line. Overall, we had a nice time. Allow for about 2-3 hours depending on how fast or slow you walk. This is a smaller zoo with smaller exhibits. I think I enjoyed the gardens more than the animal exhibits! I would have loved to grab a beer but I couldn’t bring myself to pay $13 for one. I’m glad we visited and if you have time and have small kids definitely go, but if I had a tight timeline then I may have passed on it.

I used to love it here. Sadly, the upkeep has hit the rocks. The area near the lemurs/monkeys has been under construction FOREVER and I do mean FOREVER. Like years. Also, I know it’s a zoo, but there were multiple areas where the stench of animal urine was unbearable. The big cats were difficult to view due to the enclosure being scratched and worn out. I am so sad that the zoo hasn’t been maintained properly, it used to be one of my favorite places to visit when we would come to the Bay Area.

I really like that there are free days designated for residents. I recently went to the zoo. I really like the lemurs and there was a new animal, fossa that I enjoyed seeing. My favorite is the red pandas. Recently there have been new updates/renovations. Unfortunately, there seemed to be a lot of animals missing. I think they were being moved around. It was a pleasant, quiet experience here. Some work and revisions were happening, so it a little sad to have to be constantly redirected on the pathways, but all for the good of the animals, right? animals here seem to have better conditions than some other places. I'd say for attractions, about equal with Sac zoo but SF was cheaper and easier to find parking. Theres play areas and spaces for picnics and the cafe, which has okay food, but nothing super great. they also allow alcohol in the area by the pathways, if that's your thing. A lot of greenery. Friendly staff.

Loved the zoo. Location of this zoo is amazing, right next to the ocean. Great animal collection, my favorites were grizzly bear, koala, meerkat and lemurs. I was disappointed that red pandas were not out as they were cleaning their cages. They also have a train there, $7 to ride a small loop. I think it’s overpriced for such a short ride. I would recommend Tilden park in Berkeley for the train ride.

The park is really big and there are a lot of things to do for kids and adults of all ages. The big cats’ enclosure was closed for an upgrade, which was kinda sad because it was the thing I wanted to see the most. This was one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced. This was an extremely underfunded zoo that was honestly very depressing to visit. Every exhibit (that was even open) had animals that looked so unhappy and depressed. Most animals were sleeping and seemed to have no energy. Almost all the enclosures were so poorly maintained and many smelled terrible because they had not been cleaned. The whole ambiance was off, everything was sad and depressing. -3/10, please do better SF!!!

The SF zoo is on the pricey side. However, it is a great place to visit with many animals and the park is large! In addition to the animals, the train and the playground are highlights that the kids love!! We were sad that the elephants were gone, but most of the other animals were still there! Oh, they now have a red panda and a 17 ft. anaconda!!

Really enjoyed this Zoo and Garden. Just over 100 bucks for 4 adult non-resident tickets. We went at 1030am on a weekday. We had the run of the place. Not many people were there. There was also a lot of nature around also...plants, trees, flowers,etc. Fantastic place to take pictures. We saw giraffes, orangutans, gorillas, bears, and more. Don't forget to pay for parking in the gift shop before you leave and get to the gate, you'll have to go back.

My family and I came here on a weekday around 2pm and there was no crowd. We took our time walking around to the different areas. The weather made it so nice and comfortable to walk around the whole zoo. My kids loved the playground area. All the animals were out and about so we got to see everything we wanted to see. It was a great day at the SF zoo and we would definitely come back again.

This is our favorite zoo in the Bay Area. We’ve had a membership for over 6 years and go 1-2x a month. My kids love the huge park, train, kids zoo, hippo and giraffes. They have really good pretzels and Mac and cheese at the food court. I love the gorillas and big cats. Park on Sloat for free parking. The weather is great- it’s near the beach and beautiful grounds. I also like that it’s flat and easy for walk for all levels.

The zoo is located next to the ocean. I walked through the zoo in about 2 hours. I recommend going in the early morning. The animals are more active and I saw a lot. The Penguin Island also let's you get close to the penguins. Overall, the zoo was pretty quiet and a nice place to relax and see animals.

It might not big like years back before COVID ...lots of animals no longer there but still worth the tickets price and enjoyable. Beautiful! Two 6-yr olds LOVED it! Their mom said better than LA zoo! Sad that there were no more elephants; also waiting for refurbished Big Cat enclosure(s). A little confusing as to the map - they need to make the paths color-coded with LOTS more painted arrows and have some walking guide helpers on staff. Folks: our zoos are very important! Great way to spend time with your kids. They have a lot of animals at this zoo. The park is always very clean and so are the animal exhibits. The staff is very nice and helpful. Be prepared to do a lot of walking because the park is pretty big. They had a good variety of food and we all enjoyed our meals. It has playgrounds for the kids to enjoy and a carousel.

The zoo is not so bad but can be better..I think most of the animals are lonely as some were just one. I was eager to see the lion but he was sleeping throughout..This makes me wonder why they say the lion is the king of the jungle when all it does is sleep during the Dat. Overall, not a bad experience..the gorillas made it fun with their dramatic attitudes.

Small Zoo, BUT the animals are all out so you can see them and it has a very nice family atmosphere. Best with kids under 12 due to the great playground.
