Buyers BEWARE! I came across the site and the loaf breads and cookies looked good. I ordered 2lbs of cookies and Zucchini loaf Order #9734. The one star I did not want to give but had to put in to continue. The products do not look like the pictures they provide. OH MY! I called and e-mailed the bakery about my issue, nobody e-mailed me back. I waited two days no response with my issues. I called the bakery on 1/8/2023 at 3:30 in the afternoon. Someone answered the phone I told him my issues and also told him my problems and no one contacted me. His response we will see what we will do. I do not like writing bad reviews but I gave them a chance to resolve the problem. The cookies are hard as rocks l literally did a video banging the cookies on the counter and plate and all of them taste the same and the biscotti cookies fell apart from being stale. Just a horrible experience. The cookies were just old and stale, the Zucchini bread I cut a piece the loaf bread fell apart not moist at all the white icing was hard as a rock and all you tasted was sugar too sweet, Just nasty an not edible. Beware of this place of old cookies and stale products. I will upload a video and you can see the cookies are hard as a rock. Customer service horrible. The owners of this place can not say I did not call or email to fix the problem because I did. My emails were ignored and phone calls. Please give me a refund. THANK YOU

I ordered cookies on Sunday, December16th on the website and paid for 2 day delivery. My expectation was the order would be filled within 2-3 business days and the cookies would be shipped fresh on the delivery date chosen which was Saturday, December 22nd. I emailed to follow up on my order and received an email that the cookies were shipping on December 18th which included a link to usps. I clicked the link for the next 2 business days and there was no information indicating the order was even picked up. The order finally was associated with the usps link on Thursday December 20th at 8pm. At this time the cookies were now at least 3 days old. I finally received the cookies on the evening of Monday December 24th, now almost 1 week old. These were a gift for my family in which I spent $86 on. When I opened the package and tried them, they were all stale and very dry. They were also on a plastic dish with saran wrap. This is not how they were shown on the website. Overall, I am very dissapointed in the customer experience I have received from this company. I've emailed and asked for at least 50% off and have not received a response. I would not recommend ordering from here. The items were not fresh or prepared as shown on the website.

This is my all time favorite spot in Chicago. I lived down the street for four years and went here almost every weekend and for the past year coming back to visit old friends this is the only mandatory stop for me. This is probably my last time in chicago for many years so I won't mind telling everyone the best things here (because now I'll no longer have to compete for them): 1. Sfogliatelle (an Italian pastry that I became addicted to) 2. Old fashioned donut (simple and perfectly done) 3. Almond croissant (used to be my old number 1 but they sell out too quickly sometimes) 4. Fig fennel date walnut bread (I haven't had this in a few years but when they had it, I use to ship it home to my family) 5. Chai tea latte (I don't drink coffee so this was my go to, everyone that works here makes it slightly differently so you never know what you're going to get) Out of all the amazing places and food in Chicago this is always my first recommendation and the place I think of the most when I think of my time here. Thank you Scafuri for being a part of my wife and I's life for all those years. I don't how to express it properly but you will always be special to us.

It’s heartbreaking to say, but what a mess. What kind of authentic Italian bakery doesn’t have espresso? Inside it used to be fairly cozy, now it’s like a messy warehouse with boxes and junk all over the place and nowhere to sit. Can you imagine if a McDonald’s said sorry, we ran out of burgers and all we have is chicken sandwiches. If you run out, make more! I’m not really motivated to come back, and I really hate that. Update: The owner's response strangely blames the lack organization in his bakery on the pandemic. I would think the lack of customers would give them more than enough time to put everything in its place. They also ridicule the notion that an Italian bakery would have Italian style espresso and are happy to serve watery American coffee. Unfortunately it appears that as time passes this business has chosen to move away from the authentic Italian experience that made it great in the first place. Lastly, the response is just such a poor show of leadership. Instead trying to send a positive message it’s all about pointing the blame elsewhere. Sad, considering it’s their money and legacy that is on the line, not mine.

Went this morning, since it is nearby and I’ve been on a doughnut splurge recently. Please note this review is on their vanilla glazed yeast doughnut and their chocolate glazed buttermilk old fashioned. Their old fashioned doughnuts are on the smaller side, and the one I tried, while good, I’m not sure if it was appropriately priced. These OF are definitely italian, being moist and very fluffy. My guess is that they come this out due to their compact size, otherwise the pastry would turn out fluffy and dry. So, in a nut shell, their buttermilk OF are above average and unique, though I’m not sure whether I would pay that much again for another. Their vanilla glazed yeast doughnut was on the sweeter side, but not too sweet. I think the punch came from the glaze more than the doughnut itself. As for texture, the one I had was the right combination of chewy, fluffy, and moist. These are larger than the buttermilk OF and average-sized, about the same size as the ones at Dunkin donuts, and I’d say appropriately priced as well. If you like fluffy doughnuts and quick, cordial service, then I think you’ll like this place!

Update: although the cookies were late and communication with the bakery was extremely difficult the cookies were well packaged and tasted great. I would not order again for delivery but if i was in town I would counter order from this bakery. I ordered cookies the first week of December to be delivered before Christmas. I expected the cookies to be early around the 15th. It is now December 23 and after several attempts to contact them by calling and leave a message and e-mail both with no response I get a generated email today from USPS that my cookies will be delivered 12/29. I spent over $100 on this order and cannot get anyone to call or email me back. Not to mention that the cookies i ordered a month ago will not be here in time for Christmas. I am extremely disappointed and frustrated as there is no way to contact this company to find out what is going on. I cannot leave a message on their Facebook page either. I will never order from them again

I generally limit fast food and bakeries to three stars. That being said, I give Scafuri Bakery a high four stars for is authentic flavors, welcoming staff, and warm/comforting environment. I love to bring my child here after Mass and we enjoy a leisurely talk and enjoy each other's company with some great bakery goods. If you are looking to create some new family traditions, why not create them with Scafuri baked goods? And/Or if you are community minded and want to keep the velocity of you dollar local while supporting families in our Chicago community, treat yourself to some Scafuri baked goods instead of that next cheap, made over seas Amazon product; which transfers the velocity of your spent dollars out of your community. But sales pitch and pressure to support small local businesses aside, Scafuri is a great bakery where your dollars are well spent.

I placed 2 orders on Dec 7. They still have not arrived. I have tracking numbers 1 says label printed not shipped the other has no status as to where it is. I emailed the bakery and received this response. "I'm sorry you're having this experience, but we will not be able to issue a refund for these orders. Delays in the shipping process are the responsibility of the USPS, and not Scafuri Bakery. Your items shipped out on the 16th, and they are packed to remain fresh for 2 weeks during shipping. I would advise you to place a claim with the USPS if they don't arrive, but I'm sure they'll be there soon. " Baiscally not their problem and I am out around $100. Very shady and bad business. I placed my order on the 7th they didn't ship, supposedly until the 16th, and it's my problem.

I wish I could comment about my order but I have not yet received it. I ordered on Feb 7, it is now Feb 16 and I have not received it yet. Unfortunately my charge card was already charged. I have made several attempts to contact them with no luck . I really hope I still get the chance to sample the cookies and pastries I ordered. I will revise this review when and if I receive my order otherwise I guess I will have to dispute the 89.50 charge on my account. I understand that all is difficult during Covid but all I ask for is some Communication about delays . Follow up from February 7, Thank you Ash and Michelle for taking care of my order. It was lost so they put the order through again and I received my order the Cookies and the Lemon Ricotta Loaf was awesome.

  • Darlene Lees

I have only been ordering cookies from Scafuri’s for the past 3-4 years, and I’m constantly amazed at how great their service is! I normally order cookies to be sent to relatives in AZ, but this year I decided to order some for our family’s Feast of the Seven Fishes celebration on Christmas Eve. I was rather late in ordering, yet they met my requested delivery dates without missing a beat. While other vendors are telling me they can’t meet my delivery dates after all or even produce the item like I ordered it, Scafuri’s comes through with shining colors!! I absolutely love this company and my relatives look forward to getting their cookies. They even have started asking if I’m sending them cookies each year!

  • Karin Mennella

I want to give a big shout out to Scafuri Bakery for all their help with my daughter’s international day at her school. She’s the president of the Italian club at her school that’s out of state. She needed cookies and cakes for an international day they were having. Michelle at Scafuri went above and beyond helping her with the order, as well as making sure the shipment arrived in a timely matter and without any breakage. I would definitely recommend this bakery for your future needs.

Scafuri Bakery brought back "Fond Memories" of my Italian Nana's cookies and Lemon/Ricotta Loaf she used to make. We live in Rural Va and there aren't any Italian Bakeries here !!! During this quarantine, one misses the 'Small' pleasures that bring us "Comfort" and Scafuri Bakery brought those Loving Memories home to me when I opened the Cookies and Lemon Loaf. Thank You Scafuri Bakery for your "Delicious" Italian Baked Goods. They're exactly what my 'Nana' used to make. Btw....I ordered at Christmas and it DID take longer to get the Order, BUT...It wasn't the Bakeries fault. This is my second Order and it was received in a 'Timely' manner.

I liked the ability to online order and the woman helping me was very nice. I was told though I had to order 24 mini cupcakes when I only wanted 18. My order of 24 mini cupcakes and 1 regular was over $50. For quality, I'd be fine with it. The woman assisting me in the store was not friendly. When we tried the cupcakes they were SO dry. Like shortbread. The mini cake itself was under 1/2 inch, so tiny. The cake did not taste of banana and there was hardly a hint of Nutella in the frosting, you can tell by the color. I wanted to support a local business but should have stuck to the grocery store for a much better price and product.

  • topp shelf II

BEWARE OF THIS PLACE, THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE. MY SISTER PUT AN ORDER IN AND I DID ALSO. THE COOKIES ARE STALE AND HARD. WE BOTH CALLED AND SENT AN EMAIL, NO RESPONSE FROM NO ONE. THE ZUCCHINI BREAD DRY AND THE ICING I QUESS THAT IS WHAT YOU CALL ICING HARD AS A ROCK. COOKIES YOU CAN ACCTUALLY HIT ON THE COUNTER AND THEY DO NOT BREAK APART. WE TRIED TO GET HELP WITH THIS ORDER BUT NO REPLY FROM THE OWNER. JUST HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. THE ORDER NUMBER IS #9734- AND I DID CALL THE BAKERY AND LEFT MY PHONE NUMBER AND DID EMAIL YOU 2 TIMES WITH NO RESPONSE

  • Kristi Emmons

This place is pretty awesome. I've been wanting to go since I moved to the neighborhood, but never made it, due to my old schedule. Then, when my mom came to visit, she was exploring Taylor Street and wandered in. She made friends with the people here, and was telling all about how great this place is. Finally, I went with my Italian friend who was visiting, and we really enjoyed this place. The baked goods are pretty traditional, and the taste and baking is stupendous. I've been back to visit, and still a great experience. The people here really are cool.

  • Katie

I love this bakery. A friend and I have been on a mission to find the best cannolis in the city and Scafuri is our winner. Their cannolis are amazing and they have a large selections of other hard to find Italian pastries which are equally delicious. They offer catering and large to go orders. The decor is adorable. There are personal touches of oldschool family photos that really drill home the local, family-owned feel. It's a good place to relax and have some coffee and a treat or get some work done.

  • John B

I ordered Christmas cookies on Dec 13 2020 I was told I would get them for Christmas but I have not received any updates on shipping and Christmas is two days away. Its now Dec22 and they are not answering the phone either. I filed a dispute to get my $88.46 cents back today for it is 9 days . I"m a aware that shipping in this environment is a problem right now but I don't believe they have tried to ship my order. Order #5903

  • Jisu Kim

Nice quaint place. Really nice people. Tried the biscotti (almond and also the hazelnut) and the pignoli (?) A pine nut cookie with double espresso. Coffee is solid, cookies were on the sweeter side, but tasty. Biscotti had good crunch, without being dried out. Pignoli was a first for me. Had a pleasant surprise with a sweet center filling which complemented the mild, gentle flavor of the pine nuts. Definitely going back

  • Vanessa Irvin-Brown

Ordered a king cake on Sunday for Monday, only to learn bakery is closed on Mondays. Then called, and learned the King cake wouldn't be ready until after 5pm on Tuesday. Time sensitive, for work fat Tuesday celebration. Cancelled ordered, immediately after learning about the delay. And was changed for an unfullfilled Order, delayed by bakery without notice, until I Called!!!! UNPROFESSIONAL, AND CRIMINAL!!!!

  • Ayee VeePee

This Italian bakery is located in Little Italy, Taylor St. right across the Chicago Public Library. We got the Pizza Croissant and Lemon Baby Loaf and it was delicious. They are on the pricey side but you can tell the ingredients are of high quality. The staff were very friendly and accommodating - very positive vibes. The atmosphere and decor is very Italian with photos of the owner and their family.

  • William Chin

They make the beeest scones in town! We went early in the morning and got their white chocolate cranberry scones. They were fresh out of the oven, flaky outside and soft inside with perfect layers. The pumpkin cream cheese muffin was also amazing! It is a pumpkin spiced muffin injected with cream cheese filling. They got the pumpkin flavor just right. We will definitely go back and try more stuff!

  • Amanda Jean Iverson

Down right the best canolli I have ever had- and I've eaten sooo many canollis! Right amount of twang of lemon to meet the rich ricotta. This was impressive. They fill them on the spot, however I saved mine for that evening and it was still excellent. My granny came here when she lived in the neighborhood as a young girl. I can't believe it took me so long to stop in. I will be back. Thanks!

  • Thomas Perez

Was super excited when i saw this place had reopened... I walked in & was immediately saddened @ what had become of my favorite childhood bakery... No slices of pizza, no apple/cheese pastries, & what they do have looks like overpriced treats for hippsters... the old lady who owned this place is turning over in her grave... Another neighborhood institution falls victim to gentrification...

  • V R

I've been to Scafuri's on occasion, but what really inspired me to write this review is their love for the art of baking. They were extremely helpful in preparing a gluten free pastry on request, something few other bakeries can or would do, but Scafuri's took it up as a challenge and came through. Their passion shows in the excellence of their products. I would highly recommend them.

  • Bailey

Horrible staff with no sense of cleanliness. They never wear gloves, and I have even seen open wounds on their hands while they were getting my donuts. This is disgusting. The owner smells horrible. Had to back away when she greeted me. Apparently her family has owned it for years but she doesn't seem to care at all about the integrity of her establishment. Sad.

  • Kefira-Alexis Fuller

Very quaint and family friendly bakery. I wanted to try a little of everything and the staff was very patient and nice to me. I left w an assortment box of my own making but found all my baked goods to be very tasty. The home style orange doughnut turned out to be my favorite, or was it the hazlenut biscotti, or was it the...lol. You get my drift!

  • Michelle Loose

A few months back, I remember getting a mocha, orange scone, and breakfast sandwich. I ate there so the mocha came in a really beautiful mug. The scone was perfect. The sandwich was excellent. Altogether a little expensive around $15 but I splurged. I'd never been before and heard of this location's legacy. It seems to be living up to it.

  • Annie A

This place is the best. Delicious treats and savory meals, terrific coffee, comfy & charming atmosphere, kind & friendly staff, wi-fi, the works. My favorites are the pignoli cookies, the apple strudel, the cheese strudel, and any of the quiches. I've had a couple of their cakes for parties, too, and they're always amazing. Enjoy!

  • Oren Feldman-Schultz

We came in for a sweet tooth and enjoyed a gluten free chocolate chip cookie, a coconut macaroon, and a ricotta chocolate orange mini loaf. We were blown away! The cookie was soft and decadent, the coconut was sweet and refreshing, and the chocolate was rich and moist. Could not rave any more about this place. 10/5 stars

  • Felicia jackson

Hands down the BEST croissant I've ever had in MY LIFE! I bought the plain since it was my first time. Deliciously flaky on the outside--layered to the Gods on the inside!! Next month (Lol, I have to pace myself--these croissants are addictive)...Blueberry Almond! My co-workers are raving about it ...

  • Q and M Travel

Definitely get the cannoli! They are super fresh and delicious. Would get again (and we did - we went back the next day). The service was great and we enjoyed talking to the employee. The selection seemed small the first time we went (~3pm), but M said it was larger the next day (~11am).

  • aasim a

The cannolis and cookies are not that good . Better in the northeast US? NYC is better Italian cookies and cannolis. The coffee ☕️ is good. The place is a neighborhood staple for a long time, for the bright side. Chicago's little Italy has seen better days it looks like. …

  • Erin O'Connor-Staudt

Best bakery on Taylor Street. Cozy and welcoming environment great for a coffee date with a friend. They serve Bridgeport coffee (local) and lavazza espresso. Don't even get me started on the baked goods. They're exceptional. If you're a glutton like me, be sure to try their bomblini!

  • Grant Wiersum

Not many places like this are left but it's easy to see why this one is still here. A chill atmosphere and delicious no-nonsense donuts and baked goods make it a wonderful holdout from little Italy's heyday. There is a $5 card minimum though so bring cash (or eat more donuts).

  • Megan Fitzsimmons

I stumbled upon this place because I didn’t want to wait for the breakfast spot next door, and it worked out great. The donuts are made in-house and omg they’re delicious. The cookies were yummy and the place was cozy and cute. I will be back to try the loaves and pizza bread.

  • Bruce Belisle

Ordered three king cakes at Mardi Gras went to pick them up and they thought that I ordered them for the next week I needed them the next day they delivered them with no problem and everyone talked about how good the cakes were so there you have it felt good in my book

  • lorinda melamedas

I Ordered 1 lb cookies and received them in excellent condition, fresh and really yummy I also ordered the same thing for my son and his wife..they loved the cookies! Great job Scafuri!! I am a forever customer!! My son and his family too!! …

  • M G

They have good pastries, but the home made pizza dough is wonderful, makes focaccia style pizza and tastes better than any premade crusts. I rate only 4 because while their speciality is pastries, it would be good if they made bread there as well.

  • Jacob Wagnon

Update: I think the ownership might have changed? The pastries are still pretty good, but the customer service has gotten worse. Original: I absolutely love this place! The iced coffee here is quite good and matches well with the fresh pastries.

  • Rod Holmes

My company has Scafuri deliver boxes of cookies to our clients every year for the holidays. We get RAVE reviews for our gift, so I need to give RAVE reviews to Scafuri for making great cookies, boxing them up, and delivering them on time.

  • Nikkidemus Phenoix

Some of the best pastiers ever! The espresso brownie is like a hug from Nona, it restores your soul. The crossiants we're perfect and so flavorfull. Don't skip the shot of espresso, wakes ya right up and the tastes like magic in a cup.

  • Mrudula Borkar

This is lovely small place where you get tasty french sugar bites. Since I have been here the first time, I have been here for more than 4 times and absolutely loved it. I tried Tiramisu as well, it had very authentic taste, must try!

  • Erinn Mitchell

The scones and croissants were amazing!!! Wow we are planning to make this our go-to for a Saturday morning bakery. I wish I had taken a picture of the croissants, but we ate them too fast. Great, friendly service too!

  • Conrad Pomykala

A nice neighborhood bakery with Italian specialties as well. Street parking, not handicap-friendly due to layout. EDIT: Like many older shops along here there's a 4" concrete street step-up with no space for adaption.

  • Eddy Fangman

Mmm, the most dinner roll cherry Danish ever! The only thing flaky is the dry icing. The coffee was worse. The Carmel macchiato was weak coffee with milk. I don't normally write poor reviews but this is an exception.

  • Yeimi Medrano

7 months ago, Best donuts in Chicago, I love the service. I recommend to call before go if you want donuts they run out really fast. Today 03/20/2021 we try it abs they were so old and greasy really disappointed

  • Izabela Hawro

Bread is quite good :) Coffee is also fine :) Sweets - they could have make more “authentic “ Italian stuff :) And unfortunately they very often closed :( Guy who worked there is extremely helpful and kind :)

  • John Booth

I placed my 1st order, but did so with a Holiday falling on the day I was hoping to get my goodies. I am so excited knowing I have my favorite goodies coming tomorrow. I know I won't be disappointed.

Very friendly quaint family bakery. I had the pepper & egg sandwich that was very good & reasonably priced. It was also big enough to save half for later. I definitely, will return to Scafuri Bakery.

  • Prakrithy Pradeep

The warm, inviting decor, the super friendly staff, and the amazingly yum desserts come together to make this a great place to hang out, work or even just grab a bite at.

  • Debarchan Mohapatra

Tried the canolli today. The shells were soggy, no lemon zest or orange zest in the cream and the cream itself tastes wierd. Wallmart quality canolli and overpriced.

  • Sofia Mayorga

I’m so sad, we used to buy donuts from here and they were so delicious but today we bought some and they taste really old and greasy. I don’t recommend it anymore!

  • Benjamin Polony

This is a hidden gem in Little Italy. If you are a coffee fan, forget Starbucks down the street, this place has better pricing and quality. Their sweets are great.

  • Melissa Garza

Happily stumbled upon this bakery! Great service, perfect cappuccino and my hazelnut biscotti was delicious. I would recommend this bakery and come again …

  • Victor Aguilar

Ample selection of staples for a bakery (croissants, Danishes) plus several Italian cookies. Well flavored pastries but freshness could improve given the cost
