I have been coming to this library for the majority of high school whether it was to study alone or with friends. Today, I had the worst experience with a librarian. Her name was Cecilia and she was extremely disrespectful and I don't think I feel comfortable returning to this library, that I have spent so much time at, again. I was studying with a friend at a table while we quietly chatted. After being there for over an hour and a half, a librarian came up to us and told us how rude we were for talking and that we should go anywhere else to talk, but were not allowed to at that specific spot. I asked her why there were no signs up and why it had never been a problem before and she aggressively told us again how rude we were and how she had no tolerance for our "behaviour". I find this extremely disappointing because someone working for a public Calgary service shouldn't make students feel uncomfortable when they are trying to study and benefit themselves academically. Also, there are screaming kids running around this library, so I am not sure why we were such an issue with her. After she finally stopped harassing us, she went over to several other people and I watched as they left after their experience with her. As I started packing up, I said goodbye to my friend and stood up and she came marching back to us and told me she would show me the door if needed because we had started talking again. I am just in disbelief by how little respect she showed me as a human being and I am not sure what her history is, but kindness gets you everywhere and she clearly has not realized that.

I recently visited the Signal Hill Library, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by the warmth and ambience that makes this library so special. From the meticulously organized bookshelves to the aesthetically pleasing decor, every little detail contributed to creating a calming and comfortable atmosphere. What truly stood out to me was the delightful Children's Section. The area is designed to captivate young minds, with colorful displays of picture books, inviting reading nooks, and engaging interactive learning tools. The environment encourages children to embark on a journey through the world of literature and immerse themselves in the stories. As someone who believes strongly in the power of reading from a young age, I am thrilled that Signal Hill Library has created such a welcoming space for the little ones. The library also boasts great lighting throughout, providing an enjoyable reading experience without causing any eye strain. The well-lit spaces enhance the overall ambiance, making it a haven for book lovers of all ages. My time at Signal Hill library exceeded my expectations. I give this wonderful library five stars and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing and inspiring reading destination. The charming Children's Section, along with the excellent lighting, have convinced me to return time and time again.

I tried to do some work here today, but I had to leave as I find it too distracting when children are screaming and yelling. It seems this place can't decide whether it's a day care or a library. These two things might successfully go together in a larger building, where the children's play area can be separated from the study area. But this is a small building, so the whole place is filled with chatter and screeching. I love kids, but there's a time and place for everything, and a library should be a place where you can reliably go for quiet study. Bizarrely, each desk in the study area has a sign saying there is to be no talking because it is a silent area by the request of patrons. They apparently enforce this rule, judging by other comments on here. This would be a good thing, except that when you combine it with the practice of allowing children to yell and scream, it makes for a totally incoherent policy.

Only curbside pickup is offered at the moment (Feb 2021), which is super easy and unbelievably fast. When the building is open, it is a great facility with great staff -very helpful, knowledgeable, and efficient. As other reviewers have said, it's not the quietest place but I don't think libraries need extreme quiet, they need to be useful for their community and it is. The kids are all at the far end and their happy distant sounds are lovely. The libraries have tremendous value for families. When I do want quiet, I find the chatty adults at the adult end far, far more distracting and blatantly disrespectful of what the space is meant for. The chatty adults are just socializing and treating it like a coffee shop. I can tune out distant voices but not people chatting in close vicinity. Should that occur again in the future I will approach staff and ask them to intervene.

Info no longer relevant to me as I have a career. But any kid/young person who is applying for the page position, just know there's some weird stuff going on. Either my name is too ethnic for the predominantly white women that have worked here over the years OR you won't get the job unless there's a nepotism situation going on (I knew a girl who got a job here like that). From the years 2011 to 2019 I sent 100s -no exaggeration- of applications for the page position as I lived near the area, never even got a single callback, even remember following up multiple times throughout my childhood. There's something going on here with their hiring practices and my old situation might be a microcosm of a larger issue.

I understand that I was still picking books out until the last 5 minutes before the library closed, but instead of a friendly reminder to check out my books because it is closing time, one librarian came up to me and said quite rudly, "you are too late to check out books. You can't check out books now." Thankfully the librarian in the front was nice enough. When she saw me with stack of books in my hands, she kindly said, "I can help you over here" instead of trying to get rid of me without letting me check out any books like the other librarian. Also, I feel that this library has lack of book selections especially educational books for children.

In my day, libraries were a place of quiet and respect. Today, this branch is by far the noisiest library I have ever seen. I think it is used as a daycare and the children are totally unrestrained and one time I measured a full 20 minutes of this child screaming blue murder. Surely SOMEONE that works there could tell the mother to do something, but then we are all paranoid about being PC and immigrants will scream discrimination, so they get to run roughshod over our enjoyment of a library as a place to relax, enjoy and even read (but not here). I will NEVER go back to this library/daycare and believe me, I was here often (not just once).

  • Lauren Carter-Bialy

I love picking up books from this library. However, I'd love to see some improvements to the children's area. Many books are worn out/dirty (especially the board books). There's not much for infants or toddlers - I found some wooden puzzles but all the pieces were missing. I also agree with other reviewers that parents/librarians allow the kids to treat the library as a playground or daycare (4 boys running around screaming and not a peep from an adult). It's a shame because it's a very cute library.

  • Ivan Connors

I'll admit it's been a while since I've been here, and I'm not going to say anything that hasn't already been repeated many times. This is half a library and half a daycare. If you're here to get some quiet studying done don't bother. Children running around screaming are more common to see than the books. Their selections seem just fine and the space is quite modern and well decorated, but it seems the halcyon days of quiet libraries aren't applicable everywhere.

  • Zoe Hector

Absolutely horrendous. Went to get work done with a friend as we chatted about some homework questions and studied. The librarian came over and was rude and disrespectful telling us to be silent and to leave and go “anywhere else.” She kicked another group of kids out of the area and was extremely impolite. Will not be coming back here as she treated us like we were stupid and in the wrong for trying to discuss homework in an area where many people were talking.

  • Kourosh Adib

Great space for all ages and types. Early learning centre for children, story time drop in and rhyme classes for children. Tai chi classes for seniors, quiet area for studying with free WiFi all around, relatively bot crowded and there’s parking available in front of the library. Also because it’s far from downtown or train station you see less “unsavory” or homeless people spending time in the library or the bathrooms.

  • FM

This is a small size library with modern renovation style. I enjoyed reading here. The challenge is the kid playing area is really close to the quiet study area and there is no way to keep this area quiet. Additionally, I noticed people came to the study area to make phone calls, video meeting with computer, this should be prohibited. Sometimes, there are special visitors in this library. You can bring in any kind of contraption into the library, as long as it's child related. It's disappointing that my tax dollars are supporting a daycare and not a library. Daniel was rude and said to me it was his discretion as to who can bring what into the daycare. They treated me like I was a homeless person bringing his belongings into the daycare. Worse experience at a daycare ever.

  • Sharlane Ferns

We are always greeted with the friendly staffs there. They are amazing with kids. Its also a nice place to hangout for parents like me. I love bringing my kid here and she always have fun. What i like about this Library is their huge selection of books for kids. And for little ones who can't read yet, they have toys to play with too! while i can read books but still able to see them.

  • Sam Lee

Not a great place to study or work since "silent area" is not really silent due to children screaming and yelling that can be heard even from a distance. Earphones are a must-have if you plan to get anything done here, it's understandable that this library attemps to accommodate children but now it just feels like a daycare. Other than that it's a decent place.

  • Brett Nakonechny

Love the library, but please for the love of god do something about the loudness of the children. Totally understandable that its so family orientated, but even as I am currently sitting in the library writing this review, kids are running all over the library and screaming at the top of their lungs. Wall off another section for them, don't know. But please!

  • Kathryn Pisko-Dubienski

Large library with a fantastic children's play area full of toys (puppets, play cranes and play construction utilities). I recommend visiting either in the morning or early afternoon as it can become busy in the later afternoon. Many check out stations for borrowing books available inside and return stations can be found at library entrance.

  • CutesyyCutes

I love this place but my concerns are the computer centre area should be use for printing only! Or for anything that's important use only? I have been waiting for an hour to print stuff off but these ladies are only watching youtube? Like they should borrow some laptop if they are only going to watch youtube …

  • Amber Harlal

Being our community library, we frequent it often with our toddler-aged daughter. It has a fantastic children’s section with a good selection of books and movies and well as engaging toys to keep a little one busy. Story Time on Saturday mornings is one of our favourite activities and love that it’s drop-in based. Great community space!

  • Marc Lacrampe

I live close to the Signal Hill branch of the Calgary library and I find it a pleasure to stop by to collect my holds and check what is new. The place is neat, quiet and fitted with amenities like free access computers, printers and meeting rooms. And the staff is very kind. All in all a great component of our Signal Hill community.

  • Noor Shaheen

I love this library because of its strategic location and beautiful interior. The building is spacious and full of windows making it a great place to study at as well. As a student, I can come here the day before a test for a quiet, distraction-free spot to study at. The librarians are also very friendly and helpful.

  • Krzysiek Derkowski

The stuff here is amazingly friendly and helpful, it's not a huge library but for the most part these days I just log in online and get whatever book I want delivered to this branch and pick it up when it's ready. I generally select off the shelf books with my kids and they have a good selection of kids books here.

  • Mos Saleh

Children play zone is few steps away from study area, so don't be surprised if you see children running and chasing each other, screaming just because they lost sword battle with others. Other than constant noise and difficulties to concentrate on study, I found staff to be friendly and helpful.

  • Bimbibenny

Decent library with a decent collection. Some staff are very rude though, and will stare into your soul while you browse for DVDs. They're DVD collection is slightly lacking. However, they're collection of books is superb. Much preferred to the Nicholls Family Library at Westbrook Station.

  • Felicia Ng

This library is made for young families. The children's area has the perfect amount of natural light, wide open spaces to play in, and attractive rows of books at an accessible height. The staff are incredibly helpful and kind. Definitely a family favourite.

  • Monika Yu

Great community library. Great for the whole family as they have a large area for kids to read and to gather for a bit of imaginative fun. Lots of seating for reading and studying, with access to computers and printers. A fun place for the whole family.

  • Nicole Shaw

I used to love this Library.. But now it's a bloody night mare. It's like a Daycare!! I asked a women to please tell her children to stop running around and stop screaming. She did nothing.. neither did the staff.. I'll never support this place again.

  • Holden Blake

This is not a place to study. Filled with loud disregarding people and their shrieking children that run through the aisles. A construction site would be a quieter study area. Not a place for students or those looking for a spot to get work done.

  • rehan kashif

Good location and environment is quite. Staff is really nice. My only concern is that many time I saw people inside without masks while masks are mandatory but staff did not care or ask that people to wear masks. It's better to safe from covid

  • Martin Kim

A good library with good facility and very friendly staff. The only reason why I couldn't give 5 stars is because of the users in quiet study area. I truly appreciate the library entertaining children's activities - that is no problem to me

  • Stephen Yip

Great community library. Has a play area for younger children which is great. Good portion of library is dedicated to children's books, which suits the demographics of the communities near by. Staff are very friendly and quite helpful.

  • Barbara Benyon

The most 'woke' collection of books on the shelves. No balance in perspective or opinion at all. Virtually none of the classics on the shelves. If its not woke, its fluff. One staff member said she had never heard of Dickens !

  • Chapeau en Balade

A nice clean space but wouldn’t recommend it for studying. As mentioned in others’ reviews, it is too noisy to focus on reading or working. It seems that the target audience for this library is families with young children.

  • Kristine

Ample parking space if you arrive in the morning. Great, quiet spot would be the one near the laptops cabinet. Good sized windows with relaxing views. Kids area can get really loud and lots of running around the library.

  • Courtney Loach

The staff at signal hill library have been keeping me sane through my maternity leave during covid! They put together the best “surprise bags” of baby books for my baby and I, and the curb side pick up is quick and easy.

  • Jesse O'Reilly

I like coming here to study. There are plenty of desks and chairs for use. It gets a little noisy sometimes from the children’s play area, but overall, this is a cozy, well-lit library, perfect for reading or studying.

  • carmen schrottner

Nice little library in the corner of Signal Hill Centre. It can be kind of loud even in the dedicated quiet area. Great, friendly staff and ample parking spots. =)

  • Pedro Almeida

Probably one of the best libraries to study at in the city. Nice zen atmosphere with lots of natural light and is often not too crowded.

  • fazrin hameed

Well organized library with decent selections of books. It has a player area for kids. Clean washrooms. Wish they had more books though.

  • pat becker

Very noisy, not at all condusive to study. The librarian tells me this is the "new way" of libraries, letting children run and shriek.

  • Gracie D.

Great library with lots of books options. I like the layout with plenty of seating and the location is right by my house. Recommend

  • Nony
