St. Mary's Roman Catholic Basilica in downtown Phoenix, Arizona... Built in the Spanish Revival Colonial style. Began public worship in 1915... A large courtyard encompasses the grounds... the many features include cast iron figures; including that of St Francis of Assisi, Pope John Paul ll and Mother Teresa. Take 10-20 minutes of your time to walk through the courtyards many -public motifs. -The Basilica'... ...The interiors main features are the stained glassed windows. ...The windows compliment Phoenix's sunny weather 300 days of the year... Other features include the Pieta of Christ and the Virgin Mary, Joseph with the infant Jesus. The main altar and Christ Figurine and the Virgin Mary portrait. The admission is FREE and the public is always welcome. St. Mary's Basilica is Phoenix's oldest and most established religious site. If you haven't stepped inside the Saint Mary's Basilica in downtown Phoenix I would definitely recommend checking it out! officially named The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, was founded in 1881. The current church replaced an earlier adobe church which was built in 1881. Building work on the present church began in 1902 and was completed in 1914. The church was dedicated in 1915, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as St. Mary's Church in 1978. The oldest Roman Catholic parish church in the greater Phoenix, Arizona, area, it was the only parish in Phoenix until 1924 and is home to Arizona's largest stained glass windows collection and a 26 rank pipe organ built by the Schantz Organ Company.

St Mary's. Do not, I REPEAT, DO NOT HELP THE HOMELESS. ST. MARYS FOOD BANK., WHAT A JOKE. The TRULY ABOUT THAT CHURCH!! St. Mary's used a third party to deliver food to the needy. I know, I ask for a good delivery. They send a third party driver. The lady that delivered. Came by. Right in front of me, went thru what I was suppose to receive ,as far a food. Kept what she wanted out of my food delivery. Then requested a tip for herself for delivering the rest. Which was not editable. ST. MARYS. DONT WAISTE YOUR TIME. I WAS SO HURT AND DISAPPOINTED. NOT TO MENTION STILL HUNGRY. YES YES, I REPORTED IT. THEY DiD NOTHING. AND REFUSE TO SEND A FOOD Basket.

This Catholic Church MAY in fact be my favorite church in the Continental US. I have seen many hundreds of Catholic Churches around the country since I am a Flight Attendant and thus travel and find new churches everywhere. This one takes the cake. So incredibly beautiful inside, and the masses are SO respectful, traditional and Catholic. The music is absolutely fantastic and the priests are exactly what we need in this culture and day! Thank you St Mary's for being such an island of paradise in our sometimes dry Catholic wasteland here in the USA. Ps. Check out their huge list of mass times every day and on weekends!

The beautiful Catholic Church I visited left a profound impression on me. Its awe-inspiring architecture and intricate stained glass windows transported me to a place of serenity and spirituality. The ornate altar and statues were a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of those who built it. The peaceful atmosphere inside allowed for quiet reflection and prayer. Whether you're a devout Catholic or simply appreciate stunning religious architecture, this church is a must-visit.

Wow, excellent homily this AM by Pastor John. Best application of the text of Jesus walking on water I've ever heard. Likely the most accurately presented according to the text also. Back again, Sunday #2. The application of the idea of sacrifice - the first time ever in a Christian church, I've heard sacrifice properly explained. Applied to here on earth, where we actually live. Most homilies, I've heard thousands, speak to people's standing/relationship status with God. This sermon, from the text, preached the idea of sacrifice, when we walk out the doors of the cathedral.

The reverence for the celebration of the Mass is unsurpassed. There is such care taken to the liturgy. The choir and music director are the best in the diocese. The walls shake with their angelic voices! And during the different liturgical seasons, it is always a comfort to hear the different Mass parts in Latin. A bit of Latin, to stay connected to the roots of the Church.

Beautiful church right in Downtown Phoenix! Went to 9am mass where they have an organist playing above where the choir sings. Behind them is a beautiful stained glass window of Mary and angels surrounding her. This is a Franciscan community with beautiful grounds around it where you can find a statue of Pope John Paul II, St. Francis, Mother Teresa, and a wall sculpture of Our Lady of Fatima.

I asked about the traditional Latin mass and he hung up on me. Very rude british accent gentleman. I was politely inquiring about the traditional Latin mass and he said they will never do it. I'm just becoming Catholic, hopefully other churches aren't like this. I will still visit and venerate because just because someone is evil doesn't mean that Christ can't live at the church still.

I attended mass at this church five or six years ago while I was at a conference for public transportation. The minute I walked in to this church, I felt at peace. I turned to my right and saw a statue of St. Tekawitha and was so excited, as I have prayed to her often. I felt right at home and fell in love with the beautiful architecture. I dream of coming back some day.

  • Sawyer Nietfeld

Sitting in a nice little park downtown and never have I been asked to leave a Catholic church's grounds in broad daylight on a weekend "because it's private". An absolute shame, goes completely against what the church and Jesus stand for. So much for welcoming the people. Prime example of how the church has gone so far downhill and gotten detached from reality.

  • Christina Dickey

It has it's own parking garage which is convenient. The basilica is similar to most one sees. What absolutely was upsetting is that during mass, at the kiss of peace, they waved! No usual greeting. Sorry, this church is operating in fear! How many times does God tell us not to walk in fear, and the mass is mired in it. Totally focused on the things of man.

  • Susan Gammon

This was my first visit. I met some friends, I'm not Catholic. The facility is an exquisite work of art in itself. My friends gave me some info about some of the relics, stained glass, etc. I would love a more extensive tour, someday. The service was interesting, and the homily was inclusive. A lovely visit, and I will definitely return.

  • John Poe

Truly a community of good will people wanting to help others. Centrally located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, the outreach of this community is remarkable. The Church itself and all its historic preservation is truly the tip of the iceberg. Everyone is welcomed as if they are a normal parishioner. Popular place for visitors as well.

  • Cee Gee

I didn't go inside, but my friend and I took a look at the outside of this minor basilica. There's a peaceful little park-like area to the side of the church with artificial grass and statues of Pope John Paul II, St. Francis of Assisi, Mother Theresa, and Jesus disguised as a homeless man. The outside of the church is well maintained.

  • Lynn Black

Unbelievably stunning building. From it's Spanish architecture to the exquisitely detailed and large stained glass windows. The energy felt very quietly loving. Sits hidden like a rare jewel among the modern, tall, empty feeling building surrounding it

St Mary's has been here for well over a hundred years. You have to just appreciate it's splendor as a Catholic house of worship. I myself am not Catholic but a practicing christian, and yet I can appreciate it's beauty. And the service they did for the death of my friend's father was great. They treated them well and with much respect.

Coming from a small town, we don't have extravagant basilicas. My dad and I were in town for America Fest at the convention center. But like all Catholic churches, it is one of the most beautiful things, and for the collection during mass, if you don't have cash, they have a scalable qr code. over all good experience.

The day of the Dead festivities is a great event to take the family to. We all have a great time. They have Mariachi Singers, a Stage, Kid Zone along with great eats from dozens of food trucks. We don't attend church here but we keep coming back to this great opportunity to participate in the holiday.

This place is so beautiful inside. I love just stopping in to take it in when I want to slow down. I love old cathedrals, churches, and Basilicas (as well as cemeteries and grave yards) all just so beautiful to me.

Such a beautiful Church! Love the wood pews, stained glass windows, and location. It's in the heart of downtown and has a small-town Parish feel. Truly I felt God's presence both inside and outside of St Mary's Basilica. We in the Phoenix area are blessed to still have it on our midst.

  • theholycannoli

So So Beautiful! I was so Blessed to attended Holy Mass during the week here by accident. I did not know it was at 12pm. My Soul aches to return here again, for Holy Mass is so powerful you feel God's presence for sure. Thank you Lord Jesus for Loving us all while you took the cross.

  • Mary Mulbah

Gorgeous church. The 11:30 mass had a small choir with an organ. They were amazing! Beautiful voices. Stained glass windows are a must see. The courtyard outside was peaceful as well. Small parking lot with handicapped accessible ramps and door.

  • Bee Stevi (Bee)

I’m not from the area (native from Louisiana) and I’m not familiar with the cultural norms either. With that being said, I have practiced Catholicism my entire life. For starters, never have I ever seen a person pull a phone out and snap

  • George

Nice for the out-of-town faithful to be able to visit a basilica. Any church is a great place to pray and give thanks to God, but from a tourism perspective this church is not nearly as impressive as the one in St Louis and Washington DC.

  • Kyle Marshall

Thank you for keeping your doors open and for being a scaffold to beauty and love. I appreciate the opportunities to pray while at work and believe the center of Phoenix is being rediscovered. I hope this church does not suffer the same

  • Judith Cronk

Was in Phoenix for a Secular Franciscan gathering, and we held all our Masses at this beautiful Basilica. It is a simple but exquisite church staffed by Franciscan Friars, who are warm, loving and holy. Such a blessing to our week.

  • Mary Raphael George

Gorgeous and down to earth. I liked how welcoming they were and how they made Palm Sunday special by closing off the street. I feel that people were happy and diverse at this congregation. I enjoyed the Mass.

  • Deidre Haney

It a beautiful church I ever seen and hopefully my niece & her boyfriend's get married there as they lived near by as I'm so happy for them until then looking forward to their future …

  • Daniel Tandoi

Wonderful people and a beautiful church building. A bit to chilly inside. I would have preferred no sir conditioning. A Basilika made out of massive stone normally does not need air conditioning.

  • Z GarZzZ

This is a beautiful Basilica. If you're just visiting the Phoenix area then you should attend one of the masses there. Outside the basilica there's a beautiful garden with sculptures all around.

  • David Archer

Good place to say a prayer. Lots of homeless around 115 degrees outside.

Beautiful Basilica styled Catholic Church, a great place to attend mass or just sit, meditate and pray in a nice, comfortable house of God. Thank you, Franciscan Friars. God bless!

A beautiful building. Stands out compared to the rest of the downtown area which is just modern glass, concrete and steel. A nice corner to relax with some trees in the garden.

The first Catholic Church in Phoenix. Where Franciscan friars served for more than 120 years. Now it's the center of the diocesis of Phoenix. Beautiful place to rest in God.
