Oh wow. So jealous of the residents of Yarraville, to have such great venue like the Sun Theatre right in the heart of this beautiful suburb. We saw the theatre many years ago, when it just had the new roof on and only one screen and only some seats and cushions to sit on. This grand old dame showed so much potential back then. So it was an absolute thrill to see her fully restored and showing off her splendour. The incredible restoration surely must make this one of Melbourne's must-see theatres for cinema lovers. But it wasn't just the bricks and mortar. The visionary owners Michael and his clever designer wife Anne have created a really warm and welcoming space with a cosy bar for drinks and functions. We saw the film 'Voyage of the Southern Sun'. Try and see this film. It's a terrific tale of the theatre's rebirth and Michael's astounding and moving solo flight around the world in a tiny sea plane. Loved it. And the young woman working at the ticket counter was friendly and enthusiastic - reflecting the flavour of this great venue. All I need to do now is relocate to Yarraville!

This theatre is incredible. It's such a fun experience to go somewhere so beautifully designed to see a movie; every single one of their cinema rooms is beautifully decorated in the art deco style, no matter if it's one of the tiny lounges or the huge theatres. The seats are very roomy and comfortable, in my opinion much better than most theatre seats. There are little local newsreels before each movie which provide nice insight into local happenings and highlight local charities, which is a nice touch. The popcorn is yummy, and there's a huge array of cafes and restaurants right next door to, or a street over from, the theatre in Yarraville Village where you can get a meal before or after your movie. I know that some other cinemas have cheaper ticket prices, but I'm willing to pay a few extra dollars for the excellent experience offered by The Sun rather than going to a chain cinema.

After going to the Sun Theatre for the last 3 years, I'll never step foot in a commercial cinema-chain again. The Sun has become my cinema of choice: » Ticket and food prices are affordable and much cheaper than the big cinema chains (especially if you visit on Mondays; Tuesday) » Easy to book tickets online to secure your preferred seats. » Popcorn and choc-tops are made in-house, which means they're fresh and tasty! » Each cinema has a unique atmosphere and is very cozy. I love the plush seats and mini-tables. My favourite cinemas are the Grand and the Regent. » Pizza D'asporto (for a pre-movie meal) and the Sun Bookshop (for a pre-movie browse) are conveniently located next door. » Extremely friendly and helpful staff. » Abundance of parking near and around the building. A visit to the Sun Theatre redefines the cinema 'experience'.

Recently enjoyed a night out at the Sun Theatre. I booked a Roxy room out for a Function. The staff throughout the booking were highly attentive and easy to deal with. They were also very quick with all correspondence. 5 stars to them. Everything we organised was provided. They were also flexible with our room booking choice close to the date. Their instructions on meeting at the cinema and getting into the room were clear and easy to follow. The Roxy room which we hired was clean and we highly enjoyed our experience. All in all I would definitely recommend this cinema and will without hesitation recommend to my friends to host a function there. Parking is pretty easy around the rear of the venue. Also can go wrong with their choc tops. :)

Extremely nice venue. Fair ticket prices. Would recommend for private events. Had a private screening for my birthday with friends, was fantastic, would definitely do it again. The photo is from their small capacity Roxy Theatre. Despite being small it was still a nice theatre with very comfortable lounge seating and some double seats. Also got popcorn added to my event which was placed on every seat and liked by all my guests. Arriving in the day was no hassle, after notifying staff of our arrival we were called in just like you would be for any other screening.

Super comfy couches, lovely theatre. Only downside was staff and patrons out side the door were very noisy and was difficult to hear the audio in quiet moments over their chatter, going in and out of the cinema next door. Could literally hear a conversation about shifts by staff outside the door over the film's audio. We were seeing Finding the Voice and there's lots of on screen talking and as mentioned, could hear a convo about who's working what shift over the people talking on screen! Lovely old building and ambience. Loved the documentary.

Good range of films, including those no longer showing at mainstream cinemas. Art deco style decor. Friendly, helpful staff. Cheap entry on Mondays and Tuesdays. Seniors' discount every day. Comfortable seating with tiny tables between the seats for your piccolo of sparkling. Some cinemas even have couches and lounge chairs. Clean. Great homemade choc tops available at the ticket office. Plenty of parking ️ in Yarraville Station car park behind cinemas. Metered street parking.

I really wanted to love this place. It's a bit chaotic and badly managed if you are a first time visitor. The seats I booked for myself and two children were on a balcony and if you sit back in the seat about 20 percent of the screen is obscured. Not good if you are a child or short. Avoid these seats. It also feels really dangerous if you stumble and go over you' ll drop 20 feet which would not be good. I love the old feel but it needs help to make the experience more enjoyable.

Beautiful place. Staff lovely and very helpful. Will go again. My only concern was wheelchair spaces, it's a bit weird, they said there was a wheelchair space, but we couldn't see it. Had to park the wheelchair in the aisle. Probably just me not looking correctly. But great place. Recommend. A little hard for the maxi taxi ( wheelchair) as Ballarat st is now a pop up.park so the driver had to let us out in Anderson St.

Nice big comfy chairs that you can pop out of and go grab a beer and more snacks inbetween the show, walking through old hallways that make you feel like you're back in 1938. Its great to support local and enjoy what sun theatre has been able to preserve over time. I'd recommend switching it up and giving them a go in a friendly atmosphere that Yarraville Village has to offer

Great night. I decided last minute to see a movie on a Monday night, got there with only 5 minutes before the movie was to begin, bought my ticket and ice cream and was sitting in my seat before the curtain went up. What a treat it was to only have a couple of movie trailers and ads before the movie started! Overall, great experience.

  • Karen Hodges

Saturday afternoon, the film started 1/2 late, froze a couple of times then stopped completely. Never fear, the manager came in to apologise and everyone was given treats from the candy bar while we waited about 10 minutes for the film to continue. Then we were all given free tickets for our next visit! Well played, @suntheatre!

  • Victoria Brocas

Great theatre. Love all the different styles. Comfortable seats. The only thing that let it down was the food. Not a fan of the ice creams or popcorn. But my husband loves them both. So purely personal preference. Lots of accessible parking close by too. Always a bonus. And a great selection of films.

  • Fletcher Curnow

We organised a private cinema viewing for my work function and everyone at the sun theatre was a delight to work with. They were so organised and made the day seamless, they were accommodating and flexible. And in terms of price they were way cheaper than other cinemas. Can't recommend them enough!

  • Vivienne Baker

We travelled across Melb to see a 70mm film here. Loved the decco architecture. I mistakenly thought the screen would be larger. Disappointing. It was so cold in the theatre (I had a jumper coat scarf and boots) that I wished that I had a beanie. It was uncomfortably cold hence the poor review.

When I decided to randomly watch a movie today, I just looked for the nearest one to me. This theatre was such a pleasant surprise, from old-timey theatres that feels so casually classic to the wonderful staff who are very friendly and very helpful. I can't wait till the next time I get to go.

The Sun Theatre in Yarraville has been on my ‘Melbourne Bucketlist’ for a number of years. When I finally got around to going after lockdown, it was absolutely fantastic! Don’t miss the choc-tops (salted caramel was delicious!). The atmosphere outside the theatre was also very relaxing.

  • Antony D

Love that they are local and competing with the big boys… driving past here a few years ago I almost ran over Samuel Jackson and Quentin Tarantino as they crossed the road! If you don’t know the story… google it. Great story and an even better response / sign of appreciation. …

  • 心山Ludmila

I saw a movie at the grand theatre. It was a very good quality theatre. Lov it It is very well located, the best "food court" you will find for a cinema. It is in the Yarraville food and drinks centre, so many good options to eat and drink before or after a movie, even a late movie.

  • Helen Grundy

Love this place! Surrounded by local restaurants in a beautiful suburb, so you can grab dinner and see a movie within metres of each other. Service is great, seats are comfy. Overall a great experience. Also check out the bookstore just off the entrance foyer of the cinema.

  • Dilek Toygun

Certainly a unique experience watching a movie at the Sun Theatre. Admittedly the MOST comfortable seating I've ever experienced Apart from being conveniently located amongst some of the greatest eateries, being accommodated by lovely staff, is also a bonus ☺️ …

  • Madame Bee

There is something truly special about Sun Theatre. It's my favourite of all Melbourne cinemas. Well priced, friendly service and a concession stand with alcohol. Served in glassware that you can take into the Theatre with you. Do yourself a favour and check it out!

  • Jo SB

What a vintage theatre! We loved the experience here, especially since Monday & Tuesday are discount days ($13.50) was the icing on the cake. Unique experience and friendly staff. You can buy a bottle of wine and snacks at the bar before heading to the movie.

  • Mighty Brown Mouse

what a lovely atmosphere sun theater has created for the local community - so vibrant, friendly and quaint. i love the comfortable old leather seats which have endured thousands and thousand of bums and the staff are so friendly and helpful!

  • Sadek the Wombat

Probably my favourite movie theatre in the entire World! I love the small rooms, cozy atmosphere and history all over the place! The prices are good too (cheap Tuesdays are always great)! I come here quite often and am not planning to stop.

  • Joan Thomas

We are regular attendees at the Sun and love it. However, last week Oppenheimer was an issue because the sound level right through it was too high - it was way too loud. We had to have our fingers near or into our ears almost the whole

  • Tom Cross

Great local movie joint. The tickets are much cheaper then the big companies and the snacks are reasonably priced. The theathres themselves are a mix of large and small smaller spaces but are all well presented. Staff are friendly and

Great little art deco traditional theatre in a trendy inner-city suburban setting. It is right by the Yarraville rail station, so convenient to get to. Chairs are old fashioned, but soft and very comfortable. Love going here.

  • Paul Teves

An art-deco multiplex that has been well maintained. It shows arthouse films of good quality in digital format with great sound. Easy to access, next to Yarraville train station. Lots of options to eat in the neighbourhood.

  • Frank Bognar

What a fantastic movie theatre. Seats are extremely comfortable and have plenty of leg room. Bar downstairs has good atmosphere. The art Deco style is aesthetically pleasing and gives you a sense of times long ago.

  • Clarice Gatt

You cannot fault the Sun Theatre. Its the most beautiful cinema, staff are lovely, tickets are cheap, the variety of cinemas is amazing, popcorn is 10/10 and they make their own ice-creams which are to die for.

  • Kelly Mevel

Thank you to Esther and the Team at the Sun Theatre for being so accommodating when hiring out a Theatre for our Primary School. You made it a super easy experience & services was outstanding. Thank you.

  • Damien Calvert

The Sun Theatre is an art deco cinema in the inner west of Melbourne with a long and storied history. Beautifully restored, it's worth a visit. Although now digital, it does still have a 70mm projector.

  • John Bird

Great vibe and decor here and such comfortable armchairs with loads of space. Loved their exclusive locally made gin & tonic. Finished off with choc top ice-cream. Can recommend the pizza next door too.

  • Dan Barraclough

Went here for the first time yesterday to see Interstellar. What an experience. Best cinema I’ve been to hands down and the fact they play older releases as well as new films is the best.

The cinema complex is steeped in history. It has been beautifully renovated and restored. The choc top icecreams are a must have too. Don't deny yourself a wonderful cinematic experience!

Love coming to the Sun Theatre over commercial cinemas. Always a great vibe, community feel, and prices have remained very competitive over the years. Cinema interiors are beautiful!

  • Leeanne Laidlaw

This purpose built cinema is loaded with character. There are 8 different sized theatres. We were in the Roxy for our show which seats a mere 23, how intiment and cosy it was.

This theatre is amazing!!! The seats are comfy, the popcorn is great, the atmosphere is awesome and you can get a half bottle of wine with real wine glasses! Absolutely great!

Gorgeous art deco theatre once in decline, but thankfully restored due to community input. It's friendly, soft lighting, warm colours & buzzing with activity.

  • Noah Ward

A theatre with a lot of history contained inside and outside of its walls. The Clean, Art Deco design makes you feel calm and excited all at the same time.

  • James Houlihan

This place is really good and worth it. Cheap Monday and Tuesday! I have been in all the movie theatres, some are very small but still have great charm.

  • H T

Lovely cinema, but design flaws when they built lots of little modern cinema rooms. Could hear the film next door over my film, quite distracting.

  • Raff Siavashi

Such a beautiful place, its got an ora of the cinematic history to it. Had an amazing experience watching Oppenheimer in 70mm, totally recommend!
