"I'll have to actually head here sometime to try the restaurant out but I had these coconut pastries that straight up looked like a cheddar bun from my local Asian store nearby (L&C mart) and was blown away by that addicting salty egg and coconut shaving taste"
"Been inside here on two occasions, and the case was near empty both times"
"Always enjoyed breakfast pastries, food and drinks at Sunlight cafe! Whenever I’m in the area I would pick up a few boxes"
"The buns are delicious and fairly priced"
I really like the buns of this place and have been by several times before. I'm just so incredibly annoyed by the wrong change I think I got. I originally got 4 packs of 3 buns which are $4 per container = $16 but the lady kept pushing me to get an extra sweet potato container. I kept saying no, but I think she said would do it for $2 and I agreed which meant a total of $18. I gave her $50 and she gave me $26 dollars in change, meaning she charged me $24. I argued for awhile, but I speak English and Cantonese as a secondary language and she spoke Mandarin and a little Cantonese. Eventually, I just gave up. I'm happy to change my review and be corrected, but even accounting for full price for 5 items and tax it doesn't make sense. Basic math with unit prices should not be this complicated!
I'll have to actually head here sometime to try the restaurant out but I had these coconut pastries that straight up looked like a cheddar bun from my local Asian store nearby (L&C mart) and was blown away by that addicting salty egg and coconut shaving taste. These buns were so soft and elastic. The coconut shavings are generously spread inside the bun that the overall texture in the filling feels more like a spread than what you can expect in most coconut-based dessert/snacks. The salty egg taste on the other hand.. flat out chef's kiss. I couldn't decipher the taste after eating one and felt pressured to get another. You can really taste the coconut, the bread, and whatever rest of the pastry had, but I never thought it was egg to begin with.
Been inside here on two occasions, and the case was near empty both times. There were things stacked up on the counter prepackaged and everytime I looked at something the lady in the corner making fried rice or whatever kept telling me it was delicious and to buy it. When I left without buying anything after seeing a fly land inside the case they shouted things at me in chinese. Doesn't seem like I'll be back.
Always enjoyed breakfast pastries, food and drinks at Sunlight cafe! Whenever I’m in the area I would pick up a few boxes. Owners are nice and always recommending me try new items. I rather go here than to the supermarkets that buys them and sell them at a higher price to consumers. Just come here, straight to the source for freshness and less costly. They make their pastries fresh daily. 10/10 recommend.
The buns are delicious and fairly priced. However, the old lady there has been intentionally charging me the wrong price EVERY SINGLE TIME. At first I thought she miscalculated but later I realized that she did it on purpose. I have been a royal customer for a while and this behavior is not acceptable. Therefore, make sure you do you own calculation!!!
Was passing by and grabbed a coffee here. Amazingly tasty items on a decent price. And in the morning they are making items fresh. Feel free to ask them to make something and they will do the best. We asked green onion pancake and they made fresh for us (make sure to show a photo to avoid confusion).
Stopped by for a hot chocolate, based on their Google menu. Through some head shaking, I was informed that they don't carry it. On my way out I spotted a physical menu on the window indicating they have hot coffee and milk tea for $3.50 - I walked down to Starbucks and got what I wanted there.
An authentic bakery with the most wonderful buns. I've made it a point to come back weekly and pick up pastries for breakfast. Highly recommend the pork floss buns, which are so tasty. Everything is packaged tightly in plastic containers! I'll return to Sunlight for as long as I'm in Chicago.
Cute little bakery! Food is delicious and exceptionally fairly priced. Definitely worth stopping by for breakfast or lunch if you’re in the area. I believe it’s family owned. The older gentleman greeted us with a smile and is happy to serve us. Very welcoming.
Probably one of THE BEST rou-song (pork floss) buns I’ve ever had. I like that they bake them in what appears to be pull-apart rolls. It is sweet, savory, and you can taste the scallion on the outside! Soooo good!
Great food, loved the orange chicken and chicken fried rice. The coconut bread was delicious but I couldn’t understand what they said. Ended up buy big portion because I couldn’t understand a thing.
The good news is that they are maybe the only bakery around that takes credit cards! All the rest are cash only that I saw. That being said, their baked goods are not as good as the others.
Best family owned Cantonese style bakery in Chicago! Decent food with affordable price. Super friendly people. They also sell handmade dumplings, soy milk and fresh baked in bulk! …
Hole in wall bakery/cafe in Chinatown. Good old-fashioned Chinese comfort food. Portions are great for the price. Mostly older generations dine in, and younger crowds come for carryout.
I picked up some lo mein to go and ate it at ping tom Park. Absolutely delicious. Woman who helped me was very friendly. The other items also looked yummy so I will be coming back.
My wife and I stumbled upon this place while walking around Chinatown. The food was delicious. We got the shrimp fried rice and orange chicken. And very generous portions!
Best rou-song buns around town (we checked out quite a few of shops): airy bun full of yummy shredded dried pork. Also at a really great price level - $4 for 3! 确实味美价廉
We drive from Wisconsin just to go to this cafe. They have the best noodles in town and they are always so friendly! Great prices and large servings!!❤️❤️❤️
I got the Orange Chicken which was 9$ and it was excellent. I also got a egg tart for 1$ which was very good too. Good portion sizes
they tend to give you old bread. even if you insist on getting the fresh batch they will still secretly grab it from the old pile.
Great place for a Chinese breakfast of porridge or broad noodles, nai Cha and baked deliciousness at a very inexpensive price!
Best custard bun I’ve ever had! So pillowy and perfectly sweet. We dined in for brunch and the space was full of light …
Small bakery but good quality breads and cakes. They sell out early in the day so visit as early as possible for more variety
Stopped in for a quick bite. The staff chose to completely ignore us. They weren't busy. Avoid at all costs.
Best bakery in Chicago imo - the pineapple buns are crazy good. Great deals on Chowbus always too
No nonsense good food and Chinese bakery.
