"If I could give the store a minus, I would"
"I'm a handyman and I shopped here several times, spending at least $200, when I was working with a client nearby"
"I’ve been here a few times and they always have what I need"
"Cool little hardware store in the sunset unfortunately what I'm assuming is the owner of the older Asian gentleman is a complete disrespectful a****** and blatantly accuse me of being a criminal because I had asked for a blank key and then refuse to serve me anything and kick me out before calling the cops literally asked for a blank key I figured it was easier to try to do it myself than it was to try to explain to him what I needed done big mistake"
"Last 2 times I was there the owner went on a bigoted anti-chinese rant, and when I came needed a specific bolt & nut, and the store was empty except for the son or grandson working the counter, who told me I could look in the back corner and went back to staring at his phone"
If I could give the store a minus, I would. If I could suggest that they not have the older gentleman there, I would. His behavior towards people is the definition of harassment. Have been there many times and always try to be friendly needing parts. I always have a lot of things that need fixing, so I tend to wander around the aisles for a while as my brain recollects the list. I also like to see what's in the store so I'll know if they stock some part in the future. But if the older gentleman is there, I am treated coldly and followed around with questions like what do you want and don't you know what you want? He gets mad every time you try to return something and asks you if you broke it and he'll ask you a million questions about why you're trying to return. He is very rude and tries to make you leave if you take too long. I finally gave up after many years and now go to Creative Paint store up the street. They are very nice, you can look as long as you want.
I'm a handyman and I shopped here several times, spending at least $200, when I was working with a client nearby. I live in Berkeley and never come to this side of the City so made a special trip to return a few items. I was told by the only employee in the store that he was unable to process a credit card return. It took several months to get back here and when I did, with receipt in hand and items that were unopened, I was rudely told I they wouldn't accept the returns. I'd even offered to make another purchase because when I was "greeted" as I entered the store, the employee complained that too many people were returning things that day. Every time I was in the store while working with that nearby client I encountered some sort of problem or rudeness. I will never be back. I'd rather drive across town.
I’ve been here a few times and they always have what I need. Most recently, I arrived as they were getting ready to lock up for the night. They very kindly let me grab what I needed so I didn’t have to return the following day. Little things like this are what make a neighborhood store like this special, and I appreciate their kindness. I will happily support a small business like this, even if their hours might differ from what Google says, and even if the guy behind the counter is having a bad day. They’re people just like us, they’re our neighbors, and they’re there every day trying to keep that place running.

Last 2 times I was there the owner went on a bigoted anti-chinese rant, and when I came needed a specific bolt & nut, and the store was empty except for the son or grandson working the counter, who told me I could look in the back corner and went back to staring at his phone. Indifferent bigoted service. Screw this place. I'm never going again and I'll be shopping at the other hardware store, 5 blocks up the street.
Poor customer service. Came in with a hex bolt screw, and asked to find other ones like it. The guy at the front says "Good luck!" sarcastically and points to the back. Then says it's my fault for not knowing the type I was looking for, beforehand. Thanks! Went to Duke's later, and they helped me find what I was looking for.
LOOK HERE FIRST. KEEP THEM OPEN. Very nice mom and pop hardware store. They have almost everything you need that can be crammed into a little hardware store (and they DO cram a very good assortment of what your looking for). For the record I have no affiliation whatsover beyond shopping there.
Writing review again, the original review of several years ago “disappeared”. Older owner is a bit gruff, but reasonable to work with. His son argued with me over a return and cursed me out. The father tried to calm him, but the son continued. I walked out, vowing to never return.
0 STARS but you have to select one so that it posts. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! Lived in the outer sunset for 15 years and this place has sold me things that DON'T WORK! Will not credit or return any items. 0 customer service. The man that runs the place is a Horrible human being.
This is the only place in the city that I trust to make high-quality duplicate keys. I've had several bad experiences with other hardware stores and even a locksmith but this True Value has always created duplicates for me that are exact copies to the naked eye.
I was wary from the bad reviews, but went anyway since it's nearby. The clerk was cool and helped me find the plungers. No grumpy old men, at least not this time. Nice, medium-sized hardware store and convenient to Outer Sunset.
The owner that works there as a cashier is probably the cheriest friendliest nicest most informative person you'll ever meet. And yes they have about everything and if they don't have it he will know where to get it!!!
You should at least try to buy what you need from your neighborhood hardware store before going to a big box. Businesses like these are what makes our neighborhoods great. George is friendly and helpful.
Frequently shopping there .great employees! Pleasant atmosphere. Reasonable prices. When I am in the Sunset that's my go to store. William Head- Journeyman carpenter
Went there twice. Both times the thing I got didn't work. I'll see whether I can return one of the items, but... I don't have high hopes. Never shopping here again.
Always had a positive experience shopping there. Willing to order item for me if unavailable at the time. Friendly staff. Convenient location for me.
Every time I shop here I get great customer service. They are well stocked for most repairs and household needs we have out here in the outer Sunset.
If there was a zero option I would have chosen it. The owner is short tempered and quite rude. The prices are outrageous. Shop at your own risk
I've been shopping at this store for over 18 years. As a do it yourself kind of girl, I can ALWAYS find what I need here to get the job done!
really bad customer service, all they do is sit down and eat and watch tv when i ask them a question they don't want to respon
I came here once and this store has the most arrogant employees I've ever seen. Not coming here again that's for sure.
Always positive, helpful and knowledge. They always seem to have what we need. So glad they are in our neighborhood.
Horrible service. Zero help when really needed it. Don't go in if any game is on, you'll be lucky to get a hello.
Unprofessional. closed over an hour early AFTER multiple people came up to buy things. Lazy and Unprofessional.
These are good, helpful folks. I always come here before going to Home Depot. I have never been disappointed.
It sells chips and candy to the middle scholars in AP. That's how they make their profit .
Bad people don’t go here at all Taking advantage of people these people should be fined
Good selection. Love it when I can shop local instead of driving to a bigger chain.
Local store that have very good prices. Service depends on the day and the person.
Large amount of inventory and helpful, straight to the point, no nonsense, staff.
Love this place. If they sold everything I would get everything there.
Helpful personal Touch. Don't have it they'll order it we're outside
Love my neighborhood hardware! My favorite is the bins of screws.
Terrible service. I've never seen worse at a hardware store.
Seriously the most useless hardware store I’ve ever been to.
Excellent selection of screws, nuts, bolts and washers.
Good selection for small neighborhood hardware store.
The owner is a bit tooo pushy about things
No updated info about working hours
