"A fantastic stop for anyone visiting Hobart"
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the rich history and diverse culture of Tasmania. From the moment you step inside, you are transported into a world of wonder and discovery. One of the highlights of this museum is its fascinating exhibit on the Tasmanian tiger, also known as the thylacine. The museum showcases the tragic story of this extinct marsupial through a collection of preserved specimens, photographs, and informative displays. It offers a unique opportunity to learn about the Tasmanian tiger's biology, habitat, and the factors that led to its unfortunate demise. For those with an interest in prehistoric creatures, the dinosaur exhibit is a true delight. With meticulously crafted replicas and informative displays, the museum brings the era of dinosaurs to life. It's a captivating experience for both children and adults alike, offering a chance to marvel at the immense size and fascinating characteristics of these ancient creatures. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery also houses an impressive collection of coins, showcasing the history and evolution of currency in Tasmania. From ancient coins to modern-day currency, this exhibit offers a fascinating glimpse into the economic and cultural aspects of the region throughout time. Furthermore, the museum's natural history section provides a comprehensive overview of Tasmania's unique ecosystems and biodiversity. With interactive displays and informative presentations, visitors can learn about the diverse flora and fauna that call this island home. It's a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Tasmania's natural heritage and the importance of conservation. Overall, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is a gem in Hobart, offering an enriching experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you have a fascination for the Tasmanian tiger, dinosaurs, coins, or natural history in general, this museum has something to captivate and educate everyone. Don't miss the chance to explore this remarkable institution and delve into the fascinating stories that Tasmania has to offer.
Had a great visit! Great artworks and great set up! The staff at the front were super friendly and helpful! Just the security guards seemed really tight, and yelled at kids and my old mother for simple mistakes (not seeing that they stepped over the line by a toe). Glad the artwork is protected but once one of the security raised his voice, my trauma meter spiked so we left before I got to see the whole place!! Overall still 5 stars cause the museum deserves it, just wish the hired men could soften their voice when speaking to my elderly mother and putting me in fight or flight mode (and we chose flight LOL) very protective of the elderly and kids and he could have been a bit more understanding that tourists don’t all speak English and not being aggressive when they don’t understand the first time!!

TMAG never disappoints! However their children's section, Mapiya lumi is really something magical. Prebookings are essential, so you don't miss out. I found it a great way to finish our time at the museum. After restraint from the children, respecting the exhibits, this allowed them to really dive deeper and explore everything safely using all their sense (excluding taste lol). Towards the end a dream time story is projected on the roof for all to enjoy. My little ones rested on the floor looking up and enjoyed it. The last session for the days runs longer, the other sessions are 45minutes. This time frame worked well for us.

Visited a week ago. The art work is mesmerising. The Antarctic exhibition is first rate and we learnt much from the information provided. The display on the Tasmanian Tiger display was informative but sad. Would have preferred more displays on animals and geology (rocks) as used to be displayed previously. The indigenous display was good but too much. The central part of the museum had virtually nothing in it apart from a couple of Victorian display items. The museum has an app for the phone which is fun for kids to use to explore the exhibitions. Certainly good value for the children and education. Visited on

A fantastic stop for anyone visiting Hobart. Walking in I was able to listen to a symposium on Wildlife Conservation, and then a very interesting talk about the utility of ecological collections. After this, I walked through the museum and the art gallery. In the art gallery I verged upon outstaying my welcome, listening to perhaps the most passionate and knowledgeable staff member, Luke, that I have come across in any gallery. I would recommend this place just to listen to the bloke talk! Definite recommendation. (All free too!).

Amazing place to visit in the heart of Hobart, we were so surprised that it was completely free we were greeted by a wonderful male staff member thu 14/9 I’m sorry I missed his name but he was so helpful and warm explaining the exhibits, where the gift shop was and that the cafe had a strong good coffee, we spent about 2hrs exploring the centre it was well worth the walk around with twisted, and the native animals being our favourite we bought some lovely gifts for family in the shop it was a really wonderful morning

A reasonable museum, though some sections were closed when I visited, so it wasn't as good as expected. The museum provides a gòd section on Antarctica that was probably the light during my visit. There are smaller sections on paintings and aboriginal history. Sadly, some people can be very noisy and this detracts from the proper enjoyment of the museum. The nearby water area is worth a walk about, and there some reasonable fish and chips outlets if you feel hungry. Overall the museum offered a three star experience. Thank you.
TMAG has fantastic permanent exhibits, as well as a variety of new and exciting pop-up exhibits and showcases throughout the year. Set aside at least half a day to explore every corner of this place, especially the science exhibits, as there are a lot of detailed plaques that are worth your time. There is also the option to donate $5 (with Eftpos!) at the entry, which I would absolutely recommend doing, even if it’s not necessary for entry.

This was a wonderful experience, and I will be sure to drop in at any opportunity. The exhibits were wonderfully laid out and curated. I was hoping to silently record video of the experience; but, when I asked, the staff told me that they would prefer me to take stills only. That was the only down side to the experience, and I do understand. I would highly recommend this place to any visitor to Hobart.

I spent two days exploring and would have been happy to spend more time there. The building itself is evocative, both the new parts and the old. The art and history combine in clever and creative ways. So many stories being told, bringing together natural history, colonial history, invasion history from different perspectives. Highly recommended!

So much bigger than I anticipated. My children spent time doing a hands on art project with an artist Takira and enjoyed themselves. It’s awesome to have an artist who is active, engaging, present, and also has work displayed at the same time. I particularly enjoyed the furniture and the natural history section. I could have spent much more time there! We parked in Dunn Parking area which is right next to the Museum.
It is totally different from Mona, Mona prefers creativity, personality, artistry and novelty, but this museum is on the level of a state, it is a public place to see, listen to and experience the history and culture of Tasmania, lots of exhibits, paintings, specimens and instructions there, it’s good for children and tourists.

We stayed in Hobart for a week and kept coming back to this museum, great for all ages. The children’s area is really beautiful, and I appreciated the detailed and accurate history of the first peoples of Tasmania. LOVED seeing your manifesto for children in museums displayed around the museum. As homeschoolers we love to take our kids to museums as they learn so much from these immersive experiences.
Excellent museum. Don't expect a provincial out of date presentation. This is a really good, well curated museum. Old taxidermy is reimagined and put to good use, very good children's section. Excellent Antarctic room. Wish I'd had more time. Very friendly and informative guides. I hope I can come back.

I Love the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. I have been visiting and revisiting since my earliest memories of the megafauna display, which is still being maintained by the always amazing staff. The lady who greets people as they come through the sliding door is incredibly eccentric, and I Love it. As do all the kids, of course. ;)
The museum was great to see. There was a dinosaur expo on when we went admission was $15 each and it was good but not very big. Very interactive for kids though. The museum was interesting too some great artworks and friendly staff that were happy to discuss some of them with me. And an interesting section on coins.
Love the museum. I hadn't been for about 3 years. Its always good to take the kids and have a look at some of the new displays they put in. It is free of charge however you can donate at the entrance which is a good idea to do.

The collection of money and medals was fascinating and gave a greater appreciation of the challenges with early trading ships. Really loved the Antarctica exhibition and learning about Australia's role and contribution to science in this remote region.

The best place to go and spend time with a family during weekend and school holiday. A lot of things to see and indirectly learn from various art and historical works in this well maintained museum. Short walking distance from the Pier and downtown in Hobart. Definitely recommended!
This museum is free and very informative. Here you will find a range of exhibits from birds and bugs to stones and native peoples. While I did not stop in the gift shop, I can say that the museum itself is a wonderful asset and if your ever in Hobart you should definitely stop in.
The museum was small but interesting. I'm not a big art fan, but I think those who are more inclined would enjoy it. You won't need to set aside a really long time to go through this experience.

Must to see, The Sidney Nolan - Ned Kelly series travelling exhibition, simply amazing, this art gallery, museum, is up there with the best in the world. And of course, the wind from the Antarctic, when it meets Hobart Tasmania, will make you take a deep breath of wonderful art.
Free entry , gift shop and caffe! Paid parking $2.6 an hour , 2-3 hours needed for the museum and gallery ! The animals are look real ! Great place to teach your kids about creatures in Tasmania! Great place to know the history of Tasmania and aboriginals and Europeans.
Beautifully curated collections. Good balance of moving historical exhibits and thoughtful art. Had a wonderful chat with John in one of the galleries with great insight on the art!

Very well kept museum in the heart of Hobart with a taxidermy Tasmanian Tiger the main attraction. It’s haunting and eye opening to learn the dark history of Tasmania and the unfortunate human disruption that led to the animal’s extinction.
Amazing free museum with a diverse collection - definitely worth a trip if you're in Hobart. No tickets are required, you can walk in and see the collection. Not crowded even on a weekend.

WARING! To animal lovers this place has taxidermy Huskies, birds and verious other seriously sickening and unsettling displays. With a Hervey foucas on singular art and limited state history. Complex layout to guarantee irration and
Stunning free museum with great pieces of art (this is definitely a must in Hobart) and much better than MONA that was a horrific disappointment.

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is well worth a visit. Admission is free or by donation at the door. There are many different exhibits including interactive exhibits. The staff are very friendly, informative and helpful.
A well laid out, interesting museum, which is donation only. Well worth a visit for its history of Tasmania, art displays, exhibition pieces and, of course, for anyone interested in seeing the now extinct thylacine.
Great artworks, get to know local history. Don't go to the other gallarey and pay money, free entrance here. Great aircon for a hot day, support local artists.

Wonderful staff who are friendly and smile at you. The museum is small but makes for a good quick visit without getting too tired . Took me 1.30 min. And I always had the next day to see more since it's free !
Mix of history and art, also with money notes and Antarctic explorer info, spend about 1 hour ish. Some good activities for children but have to prebook.

This is an incredible collection of new art, old art and artifacts. I spoke with Lucien working on her graphite work in the entrance, her 3rd in this series of endangered species.
It's actually a decent museum and there's a little gift shop at the entrance. They're displaying "The house of longing" by Gay Hawkes when I visited and the artwork is amazing.

Fantastic museum and art gallery, one of the best I've been to. Just wish it closed later, as I could have spent even more time there.
Great museum to visit. Would definitely recommend to learn more about Tasmanian wildlife and Tasmanian aboriginal culture. More
Beautiful museum rich with history. Plenty of diverse exhibits on display, from Aboriginal art, to wildlife and paintings.
