We are members here. We enjoy the beautiful pieces that the institute has brought to Chicago. It is very clean and very friendly staff. Even if the museum is busy the place is so huge that you wouldn't notice. They do have refillable water fountains. I always bring my own water bottle. The museum will give you a clear bag to carry your water bottle in. You can't drink in the exhibits. This visit we choose to eat in their Market. You order your food and drink at a kiosk. There are 5 of them so it can get crowded. We honestly had a horrible experience with the food, and the delivery of it. The flow of how food is ordered and how you gather it is horrible. So we ordered our food. We ordered a cheeseburger, fries, french onion soup, a chocolate dessert, flatbread pizza, coke zero and a gumball head can of beer it was $86.00. When you finish your order you put your phone number in and they text you when it's ready. After we ordered we had to ask what was next you get your drinks and then sit down. We sat outside it was a beautiful day and they have a pretty fountain. I got a text that our food was ready. The fries were cold, we asked for new ones then the rest of the food was cold. It was annoying. They did give us our food money back and apologized. Around the corner on weekends there's a bunch of food trucks. Next time we will eat from there. This museum is great and a staple in our great city.

The Art Institute of Chicago is a must-see attraction when visiting the city of Chicago. Make sure to set aside several hours to walk through and explore the museum, as it is massive. I visited with my husband in July 2023 and we each selected our top-3 exhibits that we wanted to view. We took our time walking through those 6 and then sped through a few others on our way out. This guaranteed that we saw what we wanted to see with enough time. Monet, Van Gogh, and Rodin are a few of the big names here. I loved Peter Hujar's photography exhibit in the basement. Some exhibits rotate and some are permanent and have been there for decades. Guided tours are offered. Tickets are normally $32 for adults, but we got a discount for being Illinois residents- knocked down to $26/ticket. There is a parking garage nearby, I think we paid around $35, which is just what it costs to park in the city. The gift shop is awesome and has lots to offer. The Market is the restaurant located in the museum. They have a courtyard for outdoors seating with fountains and shade. We enjoyed a chicken sandwich, chicken salad sandwich, and fried brussel sprouts. It was delicious and quite filling. We were grateful there was a restaurant, as we spent several hours touring the museum and needed an early dinner.

An absolutely amazing art museum and a must see of Chicago. I visited on a Monday morning which had significantly less crowds than the weekends. Entry was quick and easy and I saved on tickets by using the Citipass. Keep in mind tickets for non residents are more expensive. The entry way is beautiful and it's very easy to navigate around the museum due to the signage and provided maps. I especially like that there is a list of must sees on the back of the map for those who only have a short amount of time to visit like I did. My favorite areas were probably the Impressionists and Ancient Egyptian pieces. The layout is easy to navigate and separated in distinct periods that makes sense, nothing detracts from the pieces themselves, and it's overall an amazing experience. I can't wait to revisit with plenty of time to thoroughly explore all the exhibits. As for accessibility: there were plenty of wide open spaces and wide open doors for wheelchairs/walkers/etc. to navigate through. There are handicap accessible ramps into the buildings as well as elevators to reach the different floors. There's wheelchair rentals near the coat check as well. https://www.artic.edu/visit/accessibility

A globally significant collection. Something of a maze internally, the Egyptian section was weak. Standouts were the impressionist oils with a huge quantity of original masters (perhaps too many), the modern American section, ancient Greece, and the rotating photography, architectural design and surrealist shows. European arms and armor should be their own museum. Strong Asian and African presence, with the best collection of pan-Asian sculpture I've seen outside of the region and the Musee Guimet in Paris, though weak on curating and nothing at all from the the Pacific. Strong Chinese, Korean and Japanese galleries with some rare and valuable pieces. Lovely to see some Dürer. Respectfully the curators could consider replacing Egypt temporarily, better synthesizing Asia, splitting off European arms and armor, lending more weight to drawings, etchings and watercolors. With such a strong pan-Asian collection, Yunnan may be a good subject to consider for a future show.

This is truly a fantastic art museum. They have a huge number of paintings from the impressionist period. So, while those galleries tend to be the most packed with people, they also have a lot of incredibly famous paintings and a lot of paintings from very well known impressionist artists. Artists. They particularly have a lot of Monet. They also have a good amount of the usual other types of exhibits seen in art museums. They have an interesting collection of furniture from various periods, and they have a lot of statuary and ceramics. I recommend taking the el, because parking downtown Chicago is outrageous. We parked in the underground lot right by the museum, we were there 2 hours and 45 minutes, and paid $31 in parking. The museum is also fairly pricey. Students and seniors pay $26 a person. Regular admission is $34 a person if you are not from Chicago. So this is not a cheap outing. It is, however, a great museum.

A gem in Chicago. Such a beautiful exhibit. Plan your visit as best you can, there is a lot to see so don't feel like you have to see it all. If you have an hour, day, or multiple days you can see what you can see and enjoy it! You can plan by medium, artists, historical time periods, regions, mediums, anything you want! I really fell in love with this place when I walked into the Monet exhibits the first time. I felt the overall power of being in close contact with true masterpieces. I don't think you can describe that until you've been there. Chicago residents have discounted pricing. Parking there can be a bit expensive and while there's a lot of parking underground it does fill up! If you are close to to downtown probably easier to use transit or rideshare.

Give yourself a full day or two at this world renowned art museum because there is so much to see. Famous for its Impressionist collection that is large, there are many additional collections of interest. Certain tours are free twice a day so consider dropping in for those also. The Museum also contains one of the country’s top 4 year art schools. See the Chagall stained class, the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Seurat, American Gothic, the Renoirs and many other famous pieces and artists. The Asian Art collection is extensive. The dining is great and the many iconic open spaces are memorable. If you are limited to one day do your homework online to maximize your experience. Today we enjoyed the Camille Claudel Exhibit, which was really intense. The building itself is iconic and beautiful. Also, enjoy the dining areas and courtyards.

  • Elizabeth

First off we loved the artwork! It was amazing how large this place is, and the quality and variety of art is excellent. We didn't buy tickets in advance but there was no wait to get tickets. $32/adult. The line was fairly long to check coats and bags, which is free. I might have planned what I wore/brought differently if I'd known. We got a map but it wasn't easily interpreted, and the amount of time we spent wandering and backtracking was quite a lot and very tiring for anyone with mobility issues. There are elevators but it's just a very confusing place, though the employees would help if asked. We ate at The Market which was very good. We were here 7 hours and there was no way we even saw half of the exhibits. Will have to come back again.

Very good museum, almost good at everything! It's just one little thing I'd like to say is that it's too big and the instructions are not very significant ( I understand it's for the better look but I got lost and missed some beautiful moments for 3 times....). I hope they have a better touring guidance or audio guide so that I have some clues of sequels in each exhibition area. Otherwise wow!!! It's like I've never seen so many beautiful stuff performed at once place in a good way, especially the Japanese area, they tried very hard to make the ambience feeling like the Japanese vibe, super impressive. I would say the way of exhibition is better than the Met in New York City.

We thoroughly enjoy our visits to the Art Institute. The staff is consistently friendly and knowledgeable, embodying the warmth of Chicago. The facilities are impeccably maintained, enhancing the overall experience. For history enthusiasts like us, it would be wonderful to have additional information on certain collections. While the popular exhibits tend to be bustling with activity, the museum remains a delightful setting for leisurely walks with friends or romantic dates. It offers the perfect ambiance to engage in conversation, reminisce, and contemplate. Pair up with your Chicago friend, if you’re from out of town, for those discounted prices.

The Art Institute of Chicago is a real treasure. My wife and I had the chance to visit and we were blown away. It's packed with art from all corners of the world and all periods of history, so there's always something interesting to see. The highlight of our visit, though? It had to be the Van Gogh exhibit. Being up close with those iconic works was something else. If you're a Van Gogh fan, or even just into art in general, this exhibit is worth checking out. In a nutshell, the Art Institute of Chicago is a must-visit. Even if you're not a huge art buff, there's so much to see and appreciate. A top-notch experience all around.

The collection at the Art Institute of Chicago is simply breathtaking. Spanning across various eras and cultures, the museum showcases an extensive array of masterpieces that leave you in awe. Whether you're drawn to the works of Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Hopper, O’ Keefe, Seurat, Sargent, Cézanne, Hockney, Degas, Cassatt, Gauguin or any other renowned artist, you'll find their art showcased with the utmost care and reverence. This museum is a must-see if you are visiting Chicago, and you need to allocate at least 2+ hours to appreciate everything the institute has to offer.

Amazing and broad collection. We went for 4 hours, but you could easily spend the entire day. Strong Impressionist collection. Also enjoyed the medieval armor displays. My only real complaint was poor direction. I've been in a lot of museums around the world they were not good in this area. The map did not synch with the actual gallery locations and wall signage. Also, two different security personnel would give us completely different directions. We had wanted to grab a coffee and a pastry but never could even find the market, so we gave up and went across the street.

Breathtaking. Words will never do justice to the way these works of art made me feel. To be in the presence of such remarkable works was almost overwhelming. The museum itself is a work of art. The museum staff was very helpful as it is somewhat of a maze if you are not familiar with the layout. There were outlets to charge your phone while you recharged with some delicious snacks. The special exhibits were a bit over crowded. You had to get in a virtual line to gain entrance but it seems they let too many people in at once. I wish I lived closer, I would be a member!

Beautiful but, frankly, disturbingly expensive if you're not an alumn (or know one!) Full of fantastic works that have had a huge impact on art in general. There's astonishing amounts of constructivist and suprematist paintings and sculptures, which was very exciting for me since I had never seen anything from those movements on display before. The modern wing is great, it features art that forces you to engage with it. The building is absolutely huge and there's so much to see. I haven't even visited the classics wing yet!

One of the best museums in the US. The Art Institue of Chicago has a great collection of Impressionism paintings, with some amazing masterpieces. Definitely a must visit for Impressionism fan. Meanwhile, they host some amazing exhibition from time to time. One of my favorite exhibition was the one with Bisa Butler. I was deeply amazed by the effort the museum team put in for that one exhibition! Would recommend to actively check what are the exhibition on display.

I don't think there's more value for money than this venue. Visit Chicago then visit this place. From European impressionist painters like Van Gogh or Monet to American contemporary art like "the jazz bowl". it's worth just walking through the institute with teh standard exhibition. You can stay for hours (rain, heat). Many items have an audio code you can type in the app to listen to more information. Definately worth the download. Wifi is great too.

What else is left to say about this incredible museum, which houses so much of the world's amazing art and history? Even people who aren't art buffs will find something to appreciate here (or at least something familiar!). My only gripe about my visit was the extremely long line for the coat check. The staff were working hard to move it along, but we still incurred about a thirty minute wait at drop-off and then again at pick-up during our March visit. Try to avoid checking anything if you can, so you can get in and enjoy the museum.

  • Martina Landolt

Never disappointing! Came here with my kids French classroom for field trip. They were assigned to the modern wing and had to write about a piece in French. So many great artists from Picasso to Matisse and Pollock to some I never heard of. Staff is always friendly and the place is spotless. Best rainy day outing! The kids were intrigued by an artist display in a form of a pile of candies. ( see photos).

The museum is full of different forms and perspectives in art with multiple collections and works. I was fortunate enough to have visited it during a showcase of Van Gogh’s works. It provides a very detailed explanation about the works and it’s history. It’s descriptions of the artworks are also very well explained such that anybody new to art could appreciate it at a higher level.

The Art Institute of Chicago is situated right in the heart of the city, next to Millennium Park. Its central location makes it convenient to access, but be prepared for weekend crowds and potential parking challenges. Inside, the museum offers a diverse array of exhibits from around the world, including renowned works like Van Gogh’s masterpieces. A treasure for art enthusiasts. For those who may not be expert level art lovers, the visit can be short(30-40min) However, it’s still a worthwhile experience

Absolutely loved my visit. Huge museum with a great collection of classics. It's a large enough museum with a slightly confusing flow, so that I'm certain I missed a variety of things. I was there for a recent Picasso exhibit and thoroughly enjoyed it. You could spend an entire day and probably not see everything. Easy to buy advanced tickets and entry was super fast, even on the opening day of an exhibit.

This is a stunning collection of artwork from so many famous painters and sculptors. The price is a bit high ($32/adult), but children 13 and under are free. The building felt like a maze at times and there were alarms constantly going off as people stood too close to artwork. Top class art museum. So many works by the greatest artists known to mankind - van Gogh, Monet, etc - the Impressionism section being the most impressive collection, IMHO. Although the tickets were a little pricey, we very much enjoyed the wide variety of artwork and found it worth the price. The Egyptian and Roman exhibits were highlights but the impressionists exhibit was out favorite.

I greatly enjoyed my visit to the museum! Very broad collection, spanning many time periods, styles, mediums, etc,. The East Asian art section was robust, but I found the amount of Korean art lacking compared to the Chinese and Japanese works. Regardless, I had a great time, and would recommend the Art Institute to anyone in Chicago!

If you can become a member, I suggest you do. I am able to invite friends or family to see exhibitions with me. Plus, you can be admitted in an hour before the museum opens to ths general public and get discounts on shopping and lunch. I advise to visit during the weekdays, it is no fun being in a crowded exhibit on the weekends.

Amazing museum, you need several days to truly enjoy everything it offers. Took advantage of the free days for IL residents and was able to catch the last day of the Remedios Varo exhibit. Also saw Picasso’s drawings and Caravaggio in Rome

One of the most well known and must go museum in Chicago. It is huge, and the queue are quite long. Coat check agents are not friendly - they are pretty rude (not all of them). Many collections of paintings, but my fav is ofc American Gothic

Wish I had more time here. Came here post-brunch and had a wonderful time but wish I could’ve been a little more with it to read more about the pieces I was looking at. This place is massive and you could absolutely spend at least 2 full days here. Would love to go back next time in Chicago. There’s definitely more to see!!

World class museum. The space inside was beautiful with multiple floors of incredible pieces. We got to see the 2023 Van Gogh exhibit which was similarly great. Would come back next time I'm in Chicago!

Awesome museum! Loved the entire experience here and the atmosphere. A lot of cool and unique art. The security/lost and found employees were great. We had lost a scarf during our visit and the employees went out of their way helping us find it. They did so with no complaints or hesitancy. Everyone was super friendly. More

Impossible to see the whole thing in one day. Wear comfortable shoes!!! There is a coat check available. You have to wait in line to hang up your jacket and then wait in line to pick up your jacket. Only took about 15 minutes each time

My favorite museum in the city. So much to see. Beautiful space!! The outside is wonderful too and a skip away from millennium park. Recommend if you are local as well as if you are touring the city. I have been several times and enjoy it more each time. You can even have some coffee while you wait. Perfect. More

Beautiful museum to go to, especially in the spring because the outdoors area was full of beautiful blooming trees! I would dedicate at least two hours to spend there. Pro-tip: check if your credit card has benefits to do a free trial with the Cultivist, because I was able to go with up to 3 guests for free! More

Such a beautiful museum with so many different visual experiences. I love the variety and the outdoor garden area was a nice place to sit and relax after walking around the museum for so long.

Had a great time at the museum today! Loved the vast collection of pieces at the Asian exhibit. Japanese Buddhist sculptures and Han era tomb figurines were standouts! Almost too many explore in one morning. Didn’t have a great time at the coat check however - had to wait an hour in total. More

Lives up to it's reputation! The collection definitely ranks up there with other premier art museums. Worth blocking off a whole day to go through the main exhibitions.

First time visit to this incredible museum. Very busy for a Friday afternoon. Spent 2.5 hours here and only saw a small part of the collection. Utilized the cellphone app to get around the museum and view the essentials. Recommend booking tickets online. Will definitely be back. More

My expectations were exceeded. Not sure if this was a permanent exhibition, but the Miniature Rooms exhibition was my favorite as well as the Remedios Varo’s one.

First time experience, a Chicago must. Fortunate to have a local AIC member get us in free and early (members get in an hour before general public). A top art institute with unique curations. Will return again. Would be worth the nonmember ticket price for entry. More

Absolutely the best museum over been to. They have an incredible collection of art. Even if you are not an art lover you will recognize many pieces. Huge building so being comfy shoes and plenty of time. While you’re here be sure to checkout millennium park.

Amazing museum with a large collection of works from important artists. The layout is well thought out and flows from one area to the next. Though large, not overwhelming in size. If you can plan a day there you will be pleased in what you cover. More

We had so much fun here. We took in the Van Gogh and Dali exhibits, but also had fun getting lost and meeting new friends as we searched for art we'd wanted to see. The place is labyrinthine, but in a good way. We loved the sense of discovery.

  • Herbert Yu

5 minutes BEFORE 5:00pm, the restroom closed and locked already! We paid for us to come in to visit here, but the experience was pretty bad, worse than any fast food restaurant or chain store. With a big museum like this, you know that how

This museum isn't the most easy to navigate and while the collection is undoubtedly quite impressive, but in my opinion it isn't as well curated as as the other art museums I've visited in New York, Philadelphia and London. Nevertheless,

There is so much to see here. I've been coming every Friday for the past few months for an hour at a time, and I haven't seen the entire museum yet. The audio files that go along with some of the pieces are well worth the listen.

  • Neil Sickling

Fantastic collection of art, something for everyone here. Wonderful place to spend a few hours browsing and enjoying the art. Photos encouraged. Free storage of larger bags. Don’t miss the impressionists collection. Stunning.

  • Naske

It was a very nice Art Gallery with different sections of paintings, sculptures, Asian art, media and photography which was closed during our visit. Van Gogh exhibition was going on. It has a separate ticket $10 to enter.

A must visit Museum with iconic American paintings. I also loved the Impressionist collection. Navigation within the Museum was not easy, but apart from that it was perfect.

The galleries does’n have relationships between them. Curator’s staff must be figured out with this. The maps din’t match in some cases. The collection is very good.
