This unassuming small corner cafe is a lovely surprise ! When it’s cold and it rains , your thoughts turn to food . It was by chance that my friend and I found this place and went in to try . It was only after we parked nearby that he remembered he’d been here before and had had a lovely experience . The Flying Fig is apparently modeled after a NY Jewish Deli ( not that I’ve ever been to NY) . When we entered , it was warm and cozy , with a lovely aroma of coffee mixing with spices . The server was prompt and all smiles , told us to choose seating and followed us with menus to a small wooden window seat . My friend had already eaten , but ordered a small banana cake , with a side pitcher of cream , just right for a wet Winters afternoon. I ordered an iced almond latte - the coffee was a dark roast with a slight fruity aftertaste. I forgot to ask which blend they used , but it was pleasant. The menu was a little different to ordinary cafe fare , and had lots of dietary options. I ordered the smashed avo with poached eggs, but the difference being that instead of the ordinary toast, it was stacked on a sweet potato latke , which was so warm and crispy on the outside , and soft and sweet inside . The eggs were perfectly cooked , with runny yolks , and the smashed avocado and hazelnut dukkah helped round out the dish . The surprise element was the Manischewitz wine reduction ( which apparently is a non alcoholic Jewish wine , which tastes like a cross between maple syrup and honey , and complimented the hazelnuts)In addition, it was plated beautifully. I really loved this dish . The owner was so happy and friendly; he came to the table and ready to explain any questions that you had about the menu . Definitely need to come back and try the French Toast - which has a gluten free option . I saw it at someone’s table and it looked amazing. If you are getting a little tired of normal cafe fare, give this place a try .

After enjoying a nice lunch and friendly service today (with a few hiccups but all forgivable) I ordered a slice of cherry pie and was upsold a side of cream. As soon as I took a bite I realised the cream was off (very off), but as I had no napkin I couldn't spit it out. It was extremely unpleasant, to put it mildly. I've worked in hospitality for over ten years and understand that mistakes happen, however the way this was handled made me doubtful I would return to the venue. I politely let a staff member know what was wrong, and she let me know she would inform the manager. A few (fairly uncomfortable) minutes later a young waitress returned with another slice of cherry pie with cream... I did not request another slice of pie and I certainly was not about to eat one after the experience I had just had. I refused the pie citing the cream as the issue, to which she responded "oh no, but this is fresh cream". Yep, I certainly hope you weren't bringing me more off cream? I asked if they could settle the bill with my partner and left, desperate to get home and brush my teeth. The pie I didn't eat was taken off our bill, however nothing else was comped - we paid for our meals, tea, coffee. He received an apology but it did not reflect the severity of the mistake. At no point did a manager come to speak with me, at no point was I actually asked what I would like to rectify the issue, instead I was delivered another slice of the thing that almost made me throw up. Next time, ask yourself, if I just ate off cream, would I want to be given MORE cream as a form of compensation? Probably not. I probably won't eat cream for a very long time. If this had been handled properly I would not be leaving this review.

I recently visited Flying Fig with high expectations, but unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfying. The Iced Chai Latte was a major letdown – it tasted like nothing more than cold milk with a sprinkle of spice on top. I expected a rich, flavorful chai infusion, but what I got was bland and unremarkable. Moving on to the food, the Homemade Falafel was another disappointment. It lacked freshness and tasted like it had been left over from the previous day. A good falafel should be crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, but this was dry and lacked flavor. The biggest disappointment, however, was the Roasted Cauliflower and Potatoes special. It was clear that this dish was not freshly made. It was served lukewarm, suggesting it had been prepared a day before and poorly reheated. The lack of warmth took away from what could have been a comforting and enjoyable dish. Overall, my visit to Flying Fig was underwhelming. The food lacked the freshness and quality I expected, and the drinks were not up to standard. It's disheartening when a place you've heard good things about fails to deliver on the basics. I hope they take this feedback to heart and improve their offerings for future customers.

Yet another recommendation by my friend as a brunch place so I came and try it out on a Monday morning. I had already had coffee elsewhere so I didn't order any. Instead I ordered the banoffee French toast as I was craving something sweet as a late breakfast even though my friend strongly recommended the lamb Reuben sandwich. The staff who greeted me wasn't friendliest but that's fine. The second staff who took my order was a lot more approachable. The food came pretty quickly which was good as I was pretty hungry by then. The challah was soft and fluffy, soaking in the toffee sauce nicely. The caramelised bananas were for some reason lukewarm which was odd for me as I had expected them to be hot and freshly cooked straight from a saucepan. I liked the additional crunchy biscuit crumbles around the side of the plate which added nicely to the overall texture of the French toast. But for my personal preference, the cream did get slightly too much halfway through so I couldn't finish it. Overall, it was a nice experience having brunch here but wasn't one that particularly stood out for me. Though I will still recommend people coming and trying this place out.

Challah French Toast

Highly recommended if you are in North Adelaide. If you have never been to a Jewish Deli, this would be a great place to go to experience that, and we would consider it a destination spot. It is located on a quiet street in North Adelaide, with plenty of seating outdoors and inside buzzes with a tradition deli feel. (Note: We only review a spot after two visits to be fair on judgement) The service has always been friendly and accommodating. However when they are busy the service level is the same, but be prepared for a delay on food coming out of the kitchen which would be expected. Our first visit the food came out quickly was to a very high standard. A huge bonus for the fact they make their own bagels in house each day. (Which you can buy to take away when not sold out.) The menu does blend traditional jewish food with their own inventive twist. The baked eggs were perfect and full of flavour. I you have never had a Reuben you must go to this place. The bagels very much reminded us of New York style bagels, and we loved the bagel and smoked salmon. We would rate it as a 4.5, due to some of the delays in food, but still an amazing place and a 5 is not that far of a stretch.

Covid times: only doing outdoor dining and takeaway food - we can still eat out safely . Outdoor brunch at @theflyingfigdelica! Always reliable for a good feed. Delicious food . . Pastrami on Rye: House smoked pastrami with mustard on dark rye. This totally reminds me of the smoked meat sandwiches back in Montreal. Love the pastrami! Tender and full of flavour. So good . . Brisket Cheese Burger: (grilled) 200 gram aged brisket patty, Monterey Jack cheese, house bread and butter pickles with schug mayonnaise on a brioche bun. If you like a good burger, this definitely hits the spot! Nice tasting patty. Nice fries. . Special of the day - Pastrami Tzimmes with sweet potato, heirloom carrots, asparagus, spiced beetroot, crispy garlic, chilli sauce + dukkah. This was a really delicious dish! The pastrami was amazing as always, and very tasty inside the crepe. . Watermelon, mint, lemon juice with crushed ice: I love anything with watermelon, so this was perfect! Especially on a hot and sunny day .

Lots of good attributes to this little place off the bat - nice corner location that offers some cosy indoor seating as well as a few options on the footpath area (not much foot traffic around here). First visit here and the place was over-flowing; this kind of popularity smacks of happy patrons AND means booking is a great idea! However, the very capable waitress played table 'tetris' and managed to find a table for my partner and I. We chose the Pastrami Reuben and the Corned Beef dish. The Reuben was generously sized but we found it very salty. The Corned Beef wasn't as flavoursome as I had hoped, the poached eggs were slightly over cooked and the bread was very difficult to manage when presented in a bowl. On the coffee element, I found my flat white was very nice and smooth. The soy latte that my partner consumed, had grainy froth indicating that the milk was over heated. The menu had lots of interesting and descriptive options to choose from, the staff were personable and friendly and I'd give this place another go. Next time, off peak (not Sunday lunch!).

This used to be one of my favourite places, the food was honestly the best in Adelaide. I’ve been a few times this year and noticed the food quality has dropped dramatically, and each time there was a mistake with my order. I kept coming back hoping these were just off days but after quite a few times I was so sure of the change in quality that I thought the place must be under new management. After googling I found that the original owner sold the business a year ago, but the change in ownership wasn’t advertised. While they seem to still be attempting Jewish food, the change in ownership has changed the quality of the food immensely, yet the price point remains relatively high (which was fine when I was paying for high quality food by an experienced chef). Sadly this is just not the same place anymore unfortunately.

This is a great setup. Plenty of indoor seating with some spots available outside on the footpath. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The coffee is great as is the brunch menu. Great combo of lunch and breakfast food on order. The Ruben sandwich is very tasty and is a big draw card. The bagels are awesome and can be purchased in a bag to take home. Home made pickles are also available and are worth a try!! Finding parking is reasonably easy, most parks are only a short 20m walk if you don't get a prime spot. Highly recommend a visit if you are in the area. Only area for improvement would be asking for drinks/coffee order straight away as most people know what they are after and this can get the ball rolling a bit faster. - edit - this seems to be happening now, awesome!

Had an appointment near The Flying Fig and we decided to pop in for brunch. Have never heard of half of these dishes, let alone the combinations ! It was amazingly delicious and such clever flavour pairings. We couldn't decide on sweet or savoury so we got the French toast with lemon ricotta and the flatbread with poached eggs and this amazing salsa. Couldn't pick a favourite, they were both so different and so tasty in their own right. Staff was lovely and very accommodating. Cafe appeared neat and tidy with lots of fun details. Fortunately, I've got another appointment next week, so I don't even need to make an excuse to go back !

One of the most unique eateries in Adelaide! Authentic Jewish food in the heart of North Adelaide with great coffee, unique dishes, and a range of groceries too! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been here but it is one of my favourites. The team are always friendly and welcoming, and they have creative specials each week. The bagels are excellent of course, and they have other classics like Matzo Ball Soup. My husband’s fave is the Pastrami Rueben and it never disappoints! Definitely worth booking if visiting on a weekend as it can be a very popular place!

Sat down for coffee and GF Reuben, followed by 2 takeaway coffees. The sit down coffee was top notch. The Reuben arrived with a soggy base, but that was okay and not a deal breaker. So far so good. I grabbed a couple of long black coffees to go, and because the sit down coffee was good I thought it would be safe. Sadly no! The takeaways were v weak and watery. Too much water, not enough coffee. I don't know how you can get it right for sit down service and so so wrong for takeaways!

Came on a Tuesday afternoon and the cafe was bustling so we had to wait a bit for our food to arrive but it was worth it! Ordered the weekly special sweet potato waffles and this was a hit amongst the group! Thick golden waffles that were crispy on the outside but soft fluffy and chewy on the inside, this hit the waffle craving that I had been nursing. The other commendable dish was the challah french toast - it wasn't too sweet and I love the creamy sweet glaze on the side paired with the caramelised bananas and walnuts

This place is absolutely amazing. It goes without saying the food was delicious. We order pulled beef baked eggs, and the lamb reuben, both were fulfilling, well balanced and exciting.But I think the real credit goes to the service. Everyone was friendly and seemed happy to work there, and our food came out unbelievably fast. The lady that served us was warm and chatty, she even offered us a latte on the house to welcome us to Adelaide. The gesture meant alot to us and we can't wait to go back.

Atmospheric suburban cafe on a corner. Pros: sit outside on a pavement table, relaxing, trees, interesting menu items, dill lox, good coffees (iced and a latte). Cons: soggy buckwheat blini was soaked with liquid from vinegar pickled veggies, and sour preserved lemon lacked flavour balance - just a soft sour breakfast. Latke was unattractively hard n dry, and it’s side kale was bitter. 3 fails in two dishes on sour, bitter and texture. Not good. We were ok on timing but the couple next to us gave up waiting for their coffee and walked away. Disappointing. Well short of the “4.6 star” (rating at writing) experience we expected.

Sadly this place looks like it had been purchased by new owners and is not what it used to be. The food is not to the standard it was this will be my last visit. The service is somewhat disappointing the messed up our order and the waiter may have been new or was not aware of what we were ordering off the menu. They also seem to charge extras for every extra including a pickle which is standard for a Ruben sandwich. None of the items on the menu resemble anything of a Jewish delicatessen. Would be surprised if the new owners were even aware of that it should be.

Lovely place for lunch in between appointments. I was greeted as though I had visited before with genuine warmth and friendliness. The food was gorgeous and the coffee was outstanding strong but soft and not over extracted. I had the balsamic mushrooms and they were delicious. Will be back. Genuinely thrilled I decided to stop for lunch. A rare treat will become more of an option when in North Adelaide now thanks to The Flying Fig.

I've been to this place twice, and both times, the staff's rudeness stood out. During the first visit, they greeted us with a curt "who are you?" and provided no welcoming gesture. On my most recent visit, despite having a reservation for outdoor seating, they seated us indoors in a corner. What was frustrating is that they allowed two unreserved parties to sit outside and then refused to move us even when outdoor tables became available. Sadly, the food and overall experience didn't justify the time spent.

I met a friend at The Flying Fig for coffee & cake. We each had a biscuit, monte carlo for me & a wagon wheel for her. Both were delicious. My friend had a cup of tea which had to go back to be topped up with water, as the tide was out! Then she had to ask for milk. In most places, you are asked if you want milk when your order is taken. I had cappuccino, which was more like a flat white but with good flavour regardless. However, it was only warm. A return visit is unlikely.

I had a large breakfast and just as large Armond cappuccino both were absolutely delicious. I was so impressed by the warmth of the owner and the service of the staff. I even accidentally left my drink bottle behind which I had bought along after a long run to Henley and back. But the owner diligently lset it aside for my return, which I was grateful that he had done thank you so very much for a warm and inviting and delicious breakfast. I look forward to coming back again..

Today was a sad day. I’ve been coming here for years and always for their amazing pastrami rueben….something didn’t go right today though, the pastrami, which normally melts in your mouth, was as tough as boot leather. Not sure if it was a dud piece of meat or just cooked badly, but it was inedible. Hopefully Flying Fig can sort this out, because it’s usually the best Reuben in Australia.

Some menu items better than others. Very good service. Place was packed in a Saturday morning. Plenty of menu options including for vegans and those who are self conscious. I had the pulled pork baked egg and initially felt it was under seasoned but realised that it was a conscious decision and a healthier choice. Excellent food with great variety. Home-made just about everything. I love a juicy pickle on the side along with some hot chips, but didn't like the spice on the chips very much, unsure what it was but had an odd flavour that I guess is an acquired taste. Good atmosphere and is often very busy. Although the food is very good and all homemade, it's a sometimes place because it. is. expensive! Lunch for me alone was $48! Highly recommended

Lovely spot in North Adelaide with some unique items. Good pastrami sandwich and nice choices for breakfast. The staff are very friendly and professional and you have the option to buy deli items from the shop. Coffee is ready good. One tiny criticism that in some dishes like the bagel breakfast a touch too much if spice and herbs were used which some people might love it.

Amazing breakfast menu and superb service. The Malawach I ordered was so delicious, I cleaned out the plate. Coffee was fantastic. Reasonable prices, breakfast for 2 with coffee was around $55. Highly recommend this cafe and I will most definitely be back to try other menu items. This cafe has a middle eastern / jewish influence and flavours are incredible.

Perfect place to sit and read or catch up with a friend. North Adelaide is just breathtaking. So much pretty in one place . Flying Fig is set apart from the main highstreets and other shops with adds to the feel of peacefulness. Can get very busy at weekends so make sure to book if you can or give it plenty of time. Peanuts butter cookies are vegan and delish, tarts smell wonderful, coffee was delicious.

the best coffee and atmosphere in north Adelaide! easy and convenient to get to. the place has new owners, but it is still just as good as always. we always come back and often bring interstate guests here. The Bagels and Rubens are always a hit.

Had the famous pastrami though the quantity was a bit thin to my liking but it definitely was a refreshing treat.. kids had the iced mocha which was good and thick .. retailing their own produce is quite interesting... had to book a table as they were busy on Sunday.. overall experience was great

I initially came for takeaway coffee and a Rueben. Coffee was nice and the Reuben was SO good (apologies for half eaten food photo but look at the filling!) that I came back for a sit down meal and ordered the shakshuka. Such a warm, homey meal. Service was friendly but a bit on the slower side when eating in so make sure you're not in a hurry if you do. Not sure when but I'll definitely be back!

Lovely little corner cafe serving great coffee. It's always packed and frequent by the locals in the neighbourhood. Food is generally healthy. Could do with bit more meat portion on the plate. Flavours were great nonetheless. Bit pricey for not as much meat that you're getting though.. Pecan pie was quite sweet, not too many crispy bits of the pie and lot of condensed milk in the pie filling

We tried the Malawach and the Hey JoJo; the flatbread on the Malawach was very nice, not so soft and tasteful. The bread on the Hey JoJo could be a tiny bit bigger and would wonderful, but I cannot complain. Coffee was good and a very good portion (large)

Fantastic brunch spot! Best coffee in North Adelaide! A super diverse and delicious menu that is suited for the whole family and many dietary requirements. Great attention to presentation and balance of flavours on each plate! They sell some of their own produce and also source their produce quite local. Can’t wait to return to this spot next time I’m in Adelaide!

It has incredible meat dishes, as well as superb non-meat dishes, sweet dishes, and thoughtful and exciting daily specials. They make their own homemade soft drink, that week being Ginger and lemon and was super refreshing . The service was friendly and attended us quickly ! I would recommend The Flying Fig to others ! We had an absolutely delicious breakfast and lovely dining experience on Sunday morning at TFF. Perfect coffee and great food menu with a heap of options. I can never pass up a Reuben and absolutely smashed mine as well as half of my friend’s. Friendly service, bright and energetic cafe and definitely the best place for brunch in north Adelaide

We ordered the egg & bacon bagel and french toast. The bagel was delicious. When I had a bite of the FT, I forgot I was in Adelaide! Haha. The flavors brought me to a different place– a beautiful one! It’s the best french toast Ive ever had! The staff are very attentive and friendly. Customer service was great! Will definitely go back here!

One of the savoury dishes was covered in a horrible sweet sauce and the salmon bagel was stale and had hardly any salmon in it. The coffees were also weak. Expensive pricing for what you get and slow service.

Massaged on FB to order Lamb Reuben + fried eggplant and went there to pick them up. The response was very quick and the food was ready to go when I got there :) I just LOVE their lamb reuben so much! It's not too expensive if you consider the portion and the taste

Such a fun little place! Wonderful coffees and beautifully plated foods. Really enjoy the option to sit inside or outside. Friendly and helpful staff really make it a great experience. We ordered dirty chais, the Challah French Toast and the Malawach.

A long-standing cafe with a small deli offering in North Adelaide. Jewish influenced but not kosher, plenty of vegetarian options though. Service a little overwhelmed today and a minor mid-hap with the eggs but this was rectified with good grace.

I had an excellent business breakfast here. The decor and vibe are really nice. It's informal yet smart. I had the latkes, which were lovely. They were topped with eggs royale. I had a great long black and my only complaint (mild one) is that the coffee wasn't piping hot. I'd certainly go back when in North Adelaide.

Legit NY-style deli in North Adelaide. Pastrami Reuben was beautiful, super peppery, fantastic kraut, great rye bread, and not drowned in thousand island. Started with an Irish coffee, finished the sandwich with a lemon iced tea. Chef's kiss

food amazing, however will not be returning due to the awful service i experienced. the waitress was so rude and incompetent, throwing the eftpos machine and treating me with disrespect. hopefully she learns how to use some manners!

Nice and cozy place for breakfast. Staffs were friendly and accommodating. Kids friendly with drawing materials provided. Food was tasty and coffee was great. Recommended!

Absolutely gorgeous little cafe with a tremendous vibe and feel. Friendly and efficient staff with plenty of welcoming regulars too.......but the absolute highlight is the food and coffee. Can strongly recommend the waffles for brekky, absolutely sensational. Will definitely be back

Great coffee, good menu, lovely location. Great for dogs too, lots of them there! Menu is a little limited (being picky), otherwise very good, liked it. Not too exxie either, 69 bucks for 2 of us and we had extra coffee etc.

A Melburnian is fussy about coffee. But the coffee here is fabulous, and the food too. We will come to Adelaide every Easter for the basketball tournament, the TFF would be our must-go brunch spot.

Good atmosphere and friendly wait staff. My partner had the French toast and I had the ottoman. Food and coffee was very nice. My only comment would be that the vegetarian and vegan substitutions are unclear on the menu.

Take great eatery in suburbia with delicious food. Their fries have this special spice to them that make them so moorish. We had the cornbeef original and pastrami sandwich. Don't expect Katz deli but it's the best I've had in a long time. Staff are lovely and friendly

Great staff to whom it is easy to talk and they take an interest in you. I had the summer shakshooka which was excellent and a nice hot chocolate that was smooth and sweet. Recommend.

the food is amazing. we got the middle eastern eggs and the warm lamb salad, and peacan pie. definately recommend anything with the lamb, it is cooked to perfection. staff and owner are very friendly and over all had a great experience. More

So good that we went there twice in two days. First for a late lunch (thanks for keeping the kitchen open) and then for a lovely breakfast. Staff are fab, food is lovingly made with fantastic ingredients. Thanks for the hospitality.

Amazing pastrami Ruben, only available on weekends, well worth the price tag, it won't leave you hungry. Service is very friendly and helpful. Can be a little slow when busy but that is expected. This will become a new regular

It was okay. Nothing to rave about. They did have very warm and welcoming table service, however for the price, we didn't love what we ordered. Personally, I feel $7.50 for a couple of pieces of bacon is too much.

Lots of house made components on the dishes.very appreciated the efforts from the chefs. Lack of FOH staffs may take longer time to be served, but still acceptable.

Must try cafe. I have been coming here regularly for over a year. The food is great, coffee is AMAZING, and staff are very friendly. I don’t usually like sweet coffee’s but their mocha is something else!!

Comfortable and cost, The Flying Fig offers diverse and delicious meals a nd great coffee. A very cute, and not too noisy, place to brunch and lunch

Excellent service, nice food, was a little disappointed that the lox blini dish only consisted of 3 blinis. Also a shame to see a ‘green wall’ consisting of plastic ikea plants. Coffee was good.

Went here for Valentine's Day breakfast and the owner was just a sweetheart giving out flowers and small gifts to their customers.

Lovely breakfast spot, very busy and noisy on a Saturday morning, we lucky to get a table, best to book a table.
