This is the worst Nepalese food i have ever had in my life. I came here searching for a good authentic nepalese food but they gave worse food ever. The guy who took our order disrespected my kids, they were slow and taking time and which is understandable as they are kids, he was rushing them, they did not even get chance to select spicy level and they gave spicy food to kids and kids could not eat well. They got water along with food. Please do not go to this place for authentic Nepalese food. The guy who took our order he did not want to listen but he appeared arrogant and disrespectful. The table was not cleaned, they did not even ask how the food was. Rice looked like it was cooked yesterday. Portions were very very small. This is the worst nepalese food i have ever ate as Nepali because i know what is good and bad Nepalese food is. Such a poor service and terrible food in general. Please do not try this restaurant if anyone is looking for a good authentic Nepalese food, you will be disappointed.

This was £38.48 delivered on Uber Eats…. £35 without the delivery fees. It has to be the second worst value meal I’ve ever had. 2 Pappadums £2.70… Small and tasty but never that price for 2. Makhan Chara (Award Winning Dish) - £15.50! Insanely priced and bang average. 6 pieces of chicken (which did taste fresh) in a creamy tomato soup sauce. Never seen smaller packaging for a curry. Onion Pakora Bhaji (4 Pieces) - £6.55 Reasonably tasty at a push, but the size of gobstoppers or a falafel and the most I’ve ever paid for some. Criminal pricing. Kathmandu Special Naan - £4.35 Well made and good quality, I can appreciate what they’re doing but I was hoping for it to be tastier. Mango Chutney - £1.95 Same as anywhere else except very expensive. Pilau Rice - £4.35 The rice was nice and probably some of the freshest rice I’ve had from an Indian. I was massively disappointed by this food. It’s an expensive place so I thought I would try it for delivery on the spur of the moment. Glad I never went for a full sit down meal here like I had planned to.

Bland food, poor service. Went in after reading some raving reviews about the place. After looking at the menu online I thought the prices for veggie food were quite steep but considering the reviews that said this was some of the best food people have had I thought it must be worth it. Maybe the place caters to meat eaters more because the vegetarian food was bland and under seasoned. My partner joked that the most flavourful thing on the plate was the ginger garnish. We ordered the special naan which was supposed to have cheese and potatoes but potatoes were nowhere to be seen. I said we received the wrong naan but was told it was the one we ordered. It was also really dry and we didn’t eat it. When asked what the food was like I said ‘it’s okay’ and the waiter just shrugged. I’ve worked in hospitality most of my life and I don’t usually like to complain about the food unless I’m very disappointed. Small portion sizes and food was not fresh. The only redeeming quality was that the only female waitress there was really nice and attentive which made our experience just a little nicer. Give her a raise

There's nothing worse than a stingy restaurant, and this is one of them. 7 of us and hardly any chutneys with our poppadums, always a red flag. A mixed tandoori starter which costs £14(!!!) Allegedly for two people and you get two tiny bits of chicken, lamb, half of a sheikh kebab cut in half and a chicken leg. Well and truly laughing in your faces at that price. No wonder you can't get it for one...it already is for one! Curry wasn't much better. Asked for chicken tikka "yes sir no problem" chicken tikka doesn't exist, just normal chicken. So why lie to us? Insulting. The rice was decent but like molten lava, had obviously been left on the pass for too long. The best part was the naan. Oh, and the plates are tiny. Really annoying. Was a claustrophobic experience. Felt like I was eating at my grandma's house on her antique plates which had been left in the cupboard since she was told they were worth nothing on flog it. Resting on their laurels after winning an award in 2019. The website says it all..met with a festive menu. Complacent. Staff could also try smiling.

Salad served on hot plates. Food took a long time to arrive. Over priced. Staff abrupt . Never again. Owner came to our table AFTER we had experienced delays, and AFTER we had ordered to explain that there were delays due to Ramadan. That's fine and understandable, but inform us before we order so we have the choice to stay or not, and I guess it begs the question of why open if customer service is going to be impacted. The owner also explained that the person who served us had difficulties speaking and communicating with people, again understandable and explains what we experienced as 'rude', but perhaps a customer facing role is not the most appropriate for this person? Owner has written a lengthy response - obviously I've touched a nerve. A review is simply an opinion of a customer's experience and this is mine - no need to be defensive. I did write the review whilst in the restaurant as I had so much time to do so, whilst waiting for the food to arrive and for the bill!

First time here last night. Was on a Christmas party. Looking forward to this as had heard great things. We arrived and was taken to our table. Given menus and asked for our drinks order we we gave. Not 2 minutes after sitting down, a grumpy old waiter came over and asked what we wanted. We asked if we could have a few more minutes to choose. Literally 2 minutes later, he came back. Very rudely, without even looking at us, said we had to order now and hurry up because they were busy. Never had this attitude before in any restaurant. I didn't have any chance to look through the menu. We were all rather taken aback by his attitude. We ordered. We had to! Our drinks arrived 5 minutes later. Food arrived soon after and was very nice. I'm afraid I wouldn't come back here purely because of the unprofessional and rude service we received.

Eaten here a few times, last couple of times I left feeling ripped off.... First time charged us nearly £15 for a vegetarian byryani , it was the same size as the sides of rice. When we asked why they said it was because it came with a curry sauce.. we'd had it before and it had came out as a massive portion..which is why we ordered it a 2nd time.. Tonight they charged us 9.95 for a side order of saag aloo.. there wasn't even a full potato in it.. nice as it was 9.95 ? Same price as the chicken rogan josh..?!! again I asked if that was charged right....Yes came the reply.. Bill came to 65 quid for 2 of us.. The tandoori chicken wasn't done in a tandoor oven.. could taste it had been done on a grill...it had also been sprayed with oil whilst on the grill giving it a distinctive sooty after taste like paraffin... But for sneaking an extra fiver on the bill they won't get our custom again...always tip in cash, this time I kept it in my pocket...

So disappointed. We waited 1hr 30 for starters and nearly 2 hours for our mains to arrive which totally ruined our experience. The people next to us waited almost the same time for their mains and were about to walk out. Service could be improved like basic things like we asked for water but that was forgotten and drinks were put to our table which were wrong. Friends of the restaurant/celebs were at the restaurant and of course they got their mains pretty quickly. We would have made a proper fuss and asked for some of the bill to be cut but we were in such a bad mood by the end we wouldn’t even be bothered. Such a shame and waste of our Saturday night, especially as I researched reviews in depth and the menu before selecting where to go . The family and people running it seemed lovely and that kind of makes you feel even more disappointed. We will not be returning

  • Vicki Chisnall

First (and last) time using this restaurant. 8 people ordered food, only 7 meals arrived. Left 1 person sat there for quite a while with no food. Chased up the food, was told we'd already it. Had to point out the fact someone was sat there without a plate. Waiter came over to check order and confirmed which dish was missing. Different waiter then came out with just a plate of chips (not the correct order). Told to cancel the missing order as by this time the whole table (including the 2 under 5s) had finished eating. Wait staff blamed the kitchen. People who did eat the food said it wasn't the best.

Been coming here for years (Christmas day, peoples birthday etc.) It's lovely. Food is always delicious whatever we order, and staff are super friendly. Update: It has now been many years myself, family and friends have been coming here for Christmas. The food here is actually exceptional, and the staff go above and beyond to make your experience lovely! We have just returned from our fith Christmas here, (although I've been coming since the year 2000 on a more casual basis,) and we wouldn't consider going anywhere else, given the quality of the food, the value for money and the service! This is the best Indian/Nepalese in Manchester!

  • Ryan Walsh

Exceptional. The waiters were very nice and accommodating. This was my first time here. There was a drunk guy who randomly walked in and sat down. He clearly had issues as he was talking to himself and asking for brandy. The staff members handled the situation perfectly. They refused to serve him in a polite manner and when the man was walking round the restaurant they guided him to the side and one of the young lads started to dance with him in a jokey way; which really helped the situation. The curry was exceptional, I had a mixed Nepalese special and all meats were cooked to perfection. I Will definitely be re attending.

The name of this restaurant is very apt... And I can certainly endorse all of the 'Great' elements. All of our food was amazing. The portion sizes are good value for money, and the staff are very friendly! The atmosphere was bustling - which can be rare to find on a Wednesday night in some restaurants. The menu was extremely varied, including options for every diet/lifestyle. I wouldn't hesitate recommending The Great Kathmandu to any of my friends. Go and check it out for yourself!

Amazing food and service. Easy to see why they have won so many awards from national competitions. Family run and very community focused. Very tasty, well presented meals. So good to experience Nepalese food. The chef's special TANDOORI CHICKEN SHAK-SHU-KA (METHI) is delicious, The LAMB KARAHI and the peswari nan were very taste. Very popular even early evening. Will definitely be back.

Good staff but really poor food: for starters, we ordered chicken momos/dimsums and lamb chaela(recommended by the guy serving us). The lamb was raw/uncooked from inside, while the momos/dimsums had very thick covering and were flavourless at best. Decided to skip ordering main course as their service was quite slow and this order took over 30 minutes to be served. I must say that the lady managing the restaurant was very polite and tried her best to provide good service, so 1 star at max. Not meant for Indian palate.

We ordered for us to collect last night 24th January. We came all the way over from Hyde for this and was extremely disappointed. The poppadums wee all soft not crispy we didn’t receive any mango chutney as I ordered and paid for the mint yogurt and onions were not evough for one person the pits they came in were small and not even half full. Chicken tikka was so so dry it cxx had obviously been over cooked as the same for the fish tikka. We can say we will never go to this restaurant again very very disappointed considering it’s more expensive than other restaurants.

  • K. S.

In my honest opinion, I was left speechless by the authenticity and depth of flavours we experienced here. I wish I had an endless appetite for all the amazing and flavoursome dishes that we had in front of us. It is obvious a lot of experience, thought and preparation goes into this amazing food. A must try for any curry lover, momos are highly recommended. It's a good thing I only live down the road, I can visit anytime. The Dangol family and their restaurant is a South Manchester staple and has been around since time immemorial. You should not miss out on this.

The Great Kathmandu in Didsbury is not just a restaurant; it's a gateway to experiencing the soul of Nepal through its cuisine. The Lamb Botwah and its accompaniments were not just food, but a celebration of flavors, textures, and the culinary artistry of Nepal. For anyone looking to explore the depths of Nepalese cuisine in a fine dining setting, this restaurant is a must-visit.

Really disappointed. Kathmandu had such a great reputation, but having been tonight for the first time in a while, the food was generally bad. It's also telling that when we asked for the bill, the waiter asked how our food was. We told him honestly that it wasn't good and his response was "ok". Either he is used to such response, or just doesn't care, either way, it's not good! Roti was not cooked fully, curry was lacking spice and flavour. Please do better, as you do not want to lose the fantastic reputation you have.

  • Aftab Gujral

The food was delicious but I had a bad stomach in the morning. My daughter was fine but we had different dishes...( 2020) We visited again in Feb 2022 to celebrate my son's birthday. Again, the food was delicious and this time none of us had problems the next day!!It was busy. Had a noisy table behind us but it was okay. The service was a bit overly attentive, I think my kids found it intrusive. The cost was £85 for four of us - mains, rice, naans, soft drinks and poppadoms - which I felt was reasonable.

Best Nepalese restaurant for miles, and the competition is strong. Still true. Both main menu and a function menu in their upstairs room excellent. Further update, visited again mid August after the heatwave. High standards maintained. Downstairs function room has been refurbished.

My girlfriend and I ordered from here recently and when we opened our order we realised there was a mistake with our one of our dishes, which happens everywhere and we understand was an easy mistake to make. We called the restaurant to see what they could do. They were extremely accommodating and we couldn’t have asked for a better service. We were sent another meal along with a refund. Excellent service and the meal we received was delicious. Lovely staff and would eat here again. Highly recommend.

  • Becky Burdaky

Ordered tonight for delivery and the food was all over the place and from what we salvaged it was absolutely freezing when it arrived. If you’re looking for a filling tasty curry unfortunately this isn’t the right restaurant for you as the portion sizes resemble those of a child’s microwave meal. When we called and the gentleman on the other line passed the phone over we were greeted with ‘what’s the matter now?’ Presuming they’ve had a few calls about the food. Very expensive for what you get.

  • Paul Murphy

The menu is quite confusing. I like spicy food. i had chilie chicken as a starter, but it was a main size portion. It was nice and spicy. I then opted for KHORSANI CHICKEN described as a dish not for the faint hearted. A hot dish of chicken pieces ... (exceptionally hot!!) This was not very spicy at all - disappointing. The bottled Nepalese beer was nice

The food was excellent but the service was poor. We waited a long time for our main course to arrive. Didn't feel that there was anyone keeping track of orders to make sure they happened in a timely manner. The food was delicious when it arrived. Quite different from the normal curries I was used to so it was really nice to have some different flavours in the mix. The special naan was particularly lovely. Good location with lots of other pubs to go to before or after your meal.

Travelled from Liverpool with my son to try this restaurant on a recommendation and absolutely loved it! The decor, friendliness, atmosphere and of course the food were all fantastic. I ordered food it came cold, I then rang up and was told it’s not their problem as they didn’t deliver it was deliveroo so I would have to take it up with them. I was not offered replacement so had no choice but to warm it up in the microwave. Considering I sent £57.00 on food the portion sizes was really small considering it was just to feed 1 adult and 3 children. Would not be ordering again as customer service was shocking and food what not the best

  • Chi Cheng

Went here for a family meal. Drinks from the bar arrive quickly but we also wanted tap water for the table which took us asking 4 time and 3 different waiters; It properly took 35 mins for water to arrive. It also only has one person taking food orders, everyone else is serving food and drink so it took a long time for them to come round and take our order. Service was not great but the food is very good. Just be patient the food is worth it.

The food here is very good, if a little expensive. I didn't mind paying a bit more for quality and have frequently dined here or had a take out. However, they've recently raised their prices making it insultingly more expensive, as I discovered this weekend. As I said, the food is very good but I'd rather not be extorted so will be going elsewhere in future. Shame really as I've been a regular customer for 5 years.

  • Sameer Rai

As a Nepali, I'd say this is one of the worst Nepalese restaurants I've been in the UK. Only 3/4 dishes were Nepali and the rest were Indian. Nothing against Indian food, I like them, but the balance was not there when you call yourselves, The Great Kathmandu. The plates were small and naans were literally mopping the table when served.

Been coming here for years and it’s been great until we discovered they have been serving us halal meat. This is disgusting, the fact they have lied to me and my family all these years. Not a single apology! Plus the food and service has dropped in standards massively and not forgetting the kitchen standards. If health and safety did an inspection, let’s just say it will be closed till further notice for sure.

Erm..... it was okay The staff were friendly but the waiters weren't very communicative. The lady ( who seemed to be in charge) was lovely. I had to get up a few times to ask for cutlery etc. The food was nice. The lamb chops for starters were just bone! They had hardly any meat on. The paneer starter was too spicy for me. Not sure if I would return.

It's genuinely one of the best Curry Houses that I've been too. After coming here, I have a whole new appreciation for the food. I think this will be my new go to place. A lot better than the other ones in Dibsbury. Food prises are fair for the area. Drink prises are about £4-5 per beer.

First time back here since pre pandemic with my elderly mum. As previously food was faultless and service fantastic. Anything Mum couldn’t eat was parcelled up for her to take home. Loved the curtains between the tables and the attention of the staff.

  • Milo Porter

Amazing. Amazing - such depth of flavour to each dish and really lovely staff. Honestly, this Nepalese is some of best curry I’ve had - lovely stuff also. Place also has a really quirky and unique character inside which I like ! Highly recommend !

Banging vegan food. As a large party we were served rapidly and the food was very tasty. Nice atmosphere and it was busy with locals which is a good sign as a visitor.

Not been in here for a long while but happy to report the food is still ace and reasonably priced. There’s a reason why this place has been around longer than most. The tradition endures.

It is the second time we ordered a takeaway from Kathmandu in hope that poor quality of food we had first time was just a glitch . Unfortunately it was the same as the first time around. Poppadoms were stale, yogurt sauce so sweet that we

Hands down some of the best food I’ve had since moving to Manchester a couple of years ago. The atmosphere is great, the place is busy and staff are exceptional. The restaurant has been operating for a long time, so they do what they do

  • Anna Krzebietka

From the outside it might not look like much and although the décor is a bit dated it’s a really great authentic, family run restaurant. No frills just amazing food! The food is far truer to traditional Indian/Nepalese dishes than you

I have been visiting the Great Kathmandu for a number of years, and have taken friends and colleagues there to eat. I look pass the dated interior and the cutlery, as I am limited to the amount of places I can Indian food as most are

We've had so many great meals in and takeouts from here when we were living in West didsbury. Very popular restaurant so worth booking. Amazing menu and the food is incredible. One of our favourtie curry houses. Highly recommended.

  • Mike Miller

I’ve been here once or twice before. Booked for a table of 4 a week in advance, ourselves and friends really enjoyed the amazing food and value for money. One of the best Nepalese Restaurants around. Keep up the good work, धन्यवाद

A local gem, serving delicious favourites such as the cod or mackerel starters. The lamb chops are grilled on charcoal and are succulent and tender, spiced well but not overpoweringly.

The food is really good but drinks are too expensive. 6.10£ for a glass of rose wine it’s a proper rip off.
