The Hook is a seafood restaurant that is located in Pier 39. This restaurant has an outdoor and indoor seating. Although their signature menu is Fish & Chips, we did not try it. We tried another interesting menu. The order system here is telling the cashier what we want, paying, then waiting and picking the order up to the table by ourselves. Self service as usual. Here are what we tried : Creamy Clam Chowder (USD 9.45) Besides clam, they also provide crab and shrimp, and also stagg chilli. We could also choose the serving either in a sourdough bread bowl or in a cup. We choose the serving in sourdough bread bowl that filled with the warm and creamy chowder with clam and mushroom. Eat it together with the sourdough bread. A good combination of a little sour taste of bread and the warm chowder. It is a good dish, especially on a cold weather in San Francisco just like what we experienced. However, we cannot eat the sourdough bread fully because it has a hard texture. Just it cut it slowly into the little slice. Crab Cake (USD 11.52) The two big fried crab cakes served with fries and coleslaw. I like that fresh coleslaw! Do not forget to add on the chilli, tomato, and mustard sauce.
This was pretty much the only place we could find with sockets to charge mobile devices at San Francisco Pier 39! This was huge for us, since both me and my brother I was with were running out of battery charge.. This place saved our butts. Now to the food. The food was good enough, not great, but not pricey either. The wait was a bit long as far as I can remember, but overall it was pretty nice. It's the first place where I tried the clam chowder and I really liked the taste, although I am not into seafood. Also had a sandwich (the safe option) and some shrimps. If you need to charge a mobile device and eat nice food, definitely recommend this place!

It was I great place to go to grab some quick chowder and fried calamari. Their menu has a lot more items with pretty good options. The only downfall is the seating, it is Pier 39 so we know the place will always be full of tourists so I think there should be better seating for people who have strollers. Just an idea but maybe out front in the area of the benches put a sign up for wheelchairs and strollers preferred since the inside is a tight squeeze for people with wheelchairs or strollers.
Pretty busy little place. Small so when it’s busy there is no where to sit. Food came out very very fast. But I’m pretty sure it was sitting under a warmer for a while because my fries where dry and my fish was very chewy and hard to eat. Food isn’t good here. The lady at the counter is very impatient when you are trying to order over the noise of the staff.

You would think going to a place on the pier the fish would be fresh. Nope. We watched them place frozen fish in the fryer. Portions were small for the price. $14 for 2 small pieces of fish and tasteless fries

Good seafood baskets. My daughter and I got the crab cakes and my husband the seafood mix basket which has fish, calamari and shrimp. Both were excellent. The fries were delicious as well and we are picky fry eaters. Had a nice patio to sit. Lots of room and at the center of Pier 39 which made it a great pit stop to refresh and go enjoy the activities on the pier again.

This place sucks. I don't recommend it to anyone. They are lucky they got the perfect location to make money, sadly their food is horrible. The clamshowder was really thick and heavy and worst of all it was cold and so was the bread too. The fish and ships looks good but they were cold too and they tasted horrible like 6 month old burnt oil. Tourist trap. Dont go there.

Went here because I was budgeting and didn't want to spend more than $20 on a bread bowl. I tried the crab and shrimp chowder. I liked the spice and shrimp, but it didn't have a lot of crab. My friend got the clam chowder and she said it was good but could've had more clams and wasn't thick enough as far as consistentcy. They have fake food to show you what you'd receive which was nice. Overall not bad, but there's better.
It was good and the service is great. The food is pretty good too. The only thing I would say is that if you want the clam chowder but decided to try the clam chowder with the shrimp and crab then you won't feel satisfied. The shrimp and crab doesn't really taste like clam chowder at all so if your looking for that comforting clam chowder taste then stick to the original, unless you don't mind the other one!
We visited Pier 39 after a long day of traveling. We stopped at the Hook because it seemed it wasn't as busy as the other places & wanted a quick bite. It was very disappointing to say the least. We ordered the fish & chips. We took one bite and tasted nothing but hot oil. We could not finish the meal as the fish had no taste & the fries were cold. I'm giving it 2 stars as we did not try the other dishes.
We were looking for some fried shrimp and didn't want to break the bank paying for it. This place was open early in the day and had great shrimp. They included fries and a sort of coleslaw, which was really tasty. The lady was cheerful and helpful, and we really enjoyed sitting at the wooden bar table. Next time we thought we would try the bread bowls of soup. The sample bowls looked yummy.
Service was good and fast. Affordable prices, not too expensive. Fish and chips were very good, a bit greasy but super crispy! The place is small but you can eat outside as well.

Got to be the worst hotdog in the USA. A stale bun and a thin anaemic sausage. No dressing, dry and tasteless. They asked for an extra couple of bucks for onlons to be added. An American classic ruined. Stick with the street vendors, much more friendly and a great grilled, fully loaded Hot dog.

The line wasn't too long. But it took a while to get our food. Had deep fried clam and fries. It was okay. The fries were average. We also got a fish burger. It was also average. Overall, there was nothing really special about the food. Didn't get a picture of burger.

Skip this one. Chowder had already congealed by the time I paid and took it to my table. We had a party of 7, and not one of us finished our food - not because we were full, but because it sucked. Salmon tasted just as fishy as seafood we get inland, rice was sticky and tasteless. You'll be more impressed with the fish a block away at IHOPs.
I ordered the chicken sandwich with small fries and a coke for a total cost of around $23. The fries and the soda came out first. I was done with that by the time the sandwich came out. The sandwich was not good. I am not sure why the high rating. I do not recommend.

Place is located in the middle of the buzzy and hectic Pier 39. Looks promising but the food did not deliver. Greasy, unseasoned fried food that's lacking in flavour. Can't comment on service as I didn't order but the format is a fast food type set up. A poor choice of establishment from my (hungry) other half.
The local is in Pier 39 and offers fish and chips, burgers and other fish dishes, the quality of the food is good but they can cure more maybe the cleaning of the inner part, expecially the roof and the tables. The price is normal but the amount of food in one dishes it's little. In general it's a good local
Avoid this place. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak and it was basically an onion sandwich and the meat quality was trash. I also ordered a clam chowder soup, and they give you like 2 Spoonfuls worth of soup. Overpriced trash.

We went in for lunch. The line wasn't too long and they moved it pretty fast. Wait for the order wasn't long either. Their fried fish sandwich was really good, the grilled fish burger was avg. I'd recommend for quick bite.

Fantastic spot to eat. Tucked away a little from the foot traffic so that's nice. We had a clam chowder sour dough bowl. It was really good. Really creamy and tasted different in a good way from the normal chowders on the pier. Also had the crab cakes which were fantastic. Very clean and nice staff.
Everything on the pier is delicious and premium priced. Their shrimp chowder/bisque is one of the best... and I hate chowder. Crab cakes weren't the best executed; a little loose inside, a little well done on the bottom, a little too greasy; but still fantastic taste. Portions were generous.
Will never recommend this place to anyone….. the chowder was so thick and lumpy, the fish from the fish n chips had oil dripping out of it, the chips seemed like they were given another life. The fish slider, what should I say, the fish should have slid out before they got over fried.
The hook was so nice. The food was good. The price was reasonable too for the location. Unfortunately they have many places to sit but they were just opening up 2 tables for people to sit together. That was my only concern. Otherwise nice establishment with plenty of food options.
Prime location, it was super busy.... so so figured it must be good! but... disappointed the chicken strips & fries was pretty average, the chicken strips had way too much batter to chicken ratio which made them too flowery and the fries were soggy not crispy
A wast of time and money. I ordered the crab and shrimp in a bread bowl. The crab and shrimp was ok but the bread was cold and hard and taste bad. My wife ordered Philly cheese steak and did not enjoy it at all. Drinks are $3 for a non refillable fountain drink.
Typical pier eatery. Not too busy for a holiday weekend. The service was quick and the food was fresh. Ordered 1 order of clam chowder and was charged for 3. Quickly noted the problem and had it resolved. The kids menu was simple but my kids ate it up. Not bad.
I entered without high expectations. In a tourist place it is always difficult to eat well and cheap. The restaurant is simple and the prices are affordable. There were no tables available. The food was good but the cleanliness should be improved.
There pop corn shrimp was exactly what i needed and wanted. Other stuff looked good but i didn't try it. The place where you get your cutlery was a little hidden but still pretty easy to find. The seating is nice but I'd rather sit our in
We walked the wharf for hours trying to find a reasonably priced place to sit down and eat that didnt have an hour wait line. We stumbled in here by accident and it was way above our initial expectations. The servers were quite friendly,
The best fish wrap ever. Our favourite meal in S.F.

We ordered both chowders a mixed seafood basket and some chicken strips and weren’t impressed with anything. Very mediocre. I can make better chowder at home and I live inland! Skip this one.
Unimpressed with the bread bowl and staff. Prices are little too high for what you get. Birds walk around the floor near where you eat. I wish I would have spent my money elsewhere.

The food was meh. Not bad but not great either, but 13.50 for fish and chips which come with 2 little fish is outrageous. The crab poppers were also a little weird. More
Food was quality for sure, just wished they had larger portions for the buck. Good eats, and grandma says the clam chowder was really good!

They have the best clam chowder I've ever tasted. Ate at a couple other restaurants on the pier but none had clam chowder like the one at this spot!!!
Worst clam chowder I have had. Bread was hard and there was basically no clam chowder in the bowl I ordered. Chowder was on the cold side as well.
15 bucks for the amount of fish and chips I got? This is way too expensive. Check other people's pictures on it.

Great fried seafood! Not overly expensive for a tourist spot either. Their service is fast and the workers are friendly. Would come here again.
Great place to eat on Pier 39 in San Francisco. We got the bread bowls with chili and shrimp&crab. Quick service and very reasonably priced.
Super busy!! Fish and ships is very good ... a must! Quality of the food is very good. Prices are bit high for the type of restaurant.
Quick and friendly service but bad fish, small portion, bad value for money. Very bland. Head somewhere else!
Want to eat 99.5% bread and .5% clam chowder? Come here. Luke warm clam chowder at best.
