The John Roan School is a mixed comprehensive that really tries to live up to the United Learning motto of “the best in everyone”. Academic results are impressive and improving year on year, both at GCSE and sixth form, where many students go on to top universities. The Principal and school leadership are inspiring, and the teaching is of a generally high standard. Behaviour is good, everyone seems to fit in. There is a range of extra curricula and after-school activities. If you’re reading Google Reviews because you are choosing a secondary school, I’d offer the following advice, speaking as a parent with two sons at the school. One, ignore the 2018 Ofsted report – it’s completely out of date, given how much has changed since then, and tells you nothing. Second, don’t be influenced by anyone who isn’t part of the school. Far better to go and see for yourself at one of the regular open days. Last, if you don’t put the school as one of your top choices at Y7, you probably won’t get a place. The John Roan is becoming very popular locally as word gets out about the trajectory it’s on.
Our eldest child joined the school in 2015 and was there for y7-11. There was a challenging period of instability in 2016-2017 but since then things have improved immensely and the wonderful characteristics of The John Roan School known by many in this area have shone through. We chose the school again for another of our children in 2019 since we were confident that things were moving in a positive direction and we have not been disappointed. The staff are energetic, enthusiastic and committed to providing an excellent holistic education to the students, the leadership is strong and ambitious, the community is so inclusive and diverse, and the pastoral support is excellent and very tailored to each child's needs. The JRSA (parents association) is really active and the senior leadership are really keen to build strong links with home and family, so they are very welcoming of parent involvement. This is a strong secondary school rooted in the community and serving local families - definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a secondary school for your child.
As a parent of a year 10 student I must say the 4 years she has been in this school has been a challenge. When she 1st started it was an amazing school couldn't be happier with her choice. But over the past 3 years the amount of head teachers they have had has had a major impact on the school. If you look at the latest Ofsted report that will give you an idea. Even though personally I don't agree with the report. Any bullying problems I have had with my child has always been sorted promptly and have always been pleased with the results. As for the review regarding the way the students speak. It's called slang and I think you'll find it happens in all schools. They are teenagers. Slang doesn't contribute towards the school. All in all I have been very pleased with the john roan as a parent it's just the last leadership roles that has failed the school.
Wow! What a great first term my daughter has had at John Roan. The school staff have been exceptional - we’ve been really impressed with the communication from all teachers and have been made to feel really welcome and involved. My daughter has settled in so well, has made great friends and has a new found love of subjects that she hadn’t enjoyed as much at primary school. The school has had some bad press in the past but I’m glad we listened to all the reports from people who are at the school now or have children that have left sixth form recently and gone into great things! Headteacher, Deputy/Vice principals and Head of Year are all brilliant. Well done John Roan.
My children have been at the John Roan since 2014, whilst we had difficult times in the past we have seen huge improvements over the last 3 years, behavior has improved greatly, we have a brilliant leadership team in place and a great team of teachers who have improved standards tremendously. My daughter (in year 12) is a high achiever, she had options to go to grammar school or other top secondary schools but she chose to stay at the John Roan to take A'levels we are really pleased with the improvements at the school and have seen positive results in not just the academic side of school but also pastoral care.
The John Roan was my school from 2011-2016. My teachers trained me to be a respectful, kind and caring human being. The school was so inclusive and human, beautifully designed and an envy to the surrounding schools. Roan sends out a message about comprehensive education and how strong it is; it has done so since it was created in 1667. From giving its students wonderful opportunities to travel around Europe and the world to the phenomenal, hard working standard of teaching. If you want cultivation, tradition, inclusion and fun, go take a look at Roan. A. Owokoniran A proud Roaner
My son is in Year 8. He’s happy and settled here, and doing well with his studies. The school is very welcoming - they really go out of the way to make kids feel at home when they start in Year 7- and the communication with the staff is really good. I know there were some issues at the school a few years back, but I’ve not seen any signs of any major issues whilst my son has been there. People I know with older kids say that a lot has been done to deal with the issues and the school has moved on massively and improved since then. So far, my son and I are happy with the school.
John Roan has bounced back. We attended a year 11 in-person parents evening last night, which reinforced a strong sense of quality and community the senior leadership has installed over recent years... Both my kids (yr 11 + yr 9) are doing really well, educationally speaking and are clearly motivated and focussed. They've both benefited from a range of out-of-school activities, strong local friendships. I fully expect them both to come through with great grades, good guidance and with a range of opportunities opened up to them by the school.
My son has just finished 7 years at The John Roan School and has just started his University adventure at Imperial College, London to study physics. Throughout his time, all the teachers and support staff have supported him in his education, recognising his ability and mentoring him along the way. I cannot recommend the 6th form enough. My other son is yr 11 and he is being fully supported to work hard and achieve his best. The teachers are always responsive and looking out for the students. It's a great community school!
We have had a really positive experience with John Roan, my daughter has been there since Y7 and the school has gone from strength to strength. The teaching staff are now very committed and the quality of teaching has really improved. My daughter has also had lots of opportunities such as learning musical instruments, singing lessons, debate mate, DofE, varied sporting activities as well as school plays etc. Would recommend any parent to check it out.
Ignore the woman known as miss bailey. She is judging people for the way they speak rather than their actual personality. I go to John roan school and I think the quality of education is very good. Just because people talk a certain way (with slang) doesn't mean they are a horrible person. They've just grown up surrounded by that kind of talk. So stop being so pretentious and actually look at the school before you start judging it
School is horrible, my daughter recently had a problem regarding a random parent outside the school gates and the school refused to help as it was not on grounds, this parent got into her face and started recording her and still the school proceeded to punish my daughter due to this crazy women’s accusations however for some reason ain’t able to help her outside the school
Absolutely amazing school. The teachers and staff are always there for support for both children and parents. My son loves this school. I am very proud my son is going to The John Roan School. Children are well behaved and very respectful. But more so always look happy before and after school.
My son is very happy here and I am happy he is at The John Roan. The teacher's are enthusiastic and very supportive, there are lots of clubs and healthy competition, in addition to structured homework. Go to the schools open days to see the students and meet the teachers
Balmarsh prison safer then this school check the incident book with 3 fight a day in school and at least 10 fight outside school with incompetent managent
Completed my GCSE'S here. Teachers and staff are very supportive and kind; they help you work at the best of your ability.
