"Had the most absurd encounter at the cafe last week"
"This cafe has so much potential (lovely building and great location) to become a family’s favourite, but unfortunately fails to deliver on so many levels"
"Potential to be so much better via a few small changes and good management"
"Let down yet again by very very poor service"
"I wish I could have given this review zero stars, but the minimum was one, so let's go with that"
Had the most absurd encounter at the cafe last week. I was there having lunch with a friend and our children. When ordering I asked for a glass of water. The woman serving me went to get me the water a picked up a plastic cup (the type you find at a water cooler). I asked if rather than have my water in a disposable, plastic cup, please could I have it on one of the glasses I could see behind her on the shelf. She said I couldn’t and that the glass I wanted was only to be used for alcohol, it was a regular tumbler, not a wine or whisky glass, a totally usual water glass. When I objected again to the plastic cup she said I could have my water out a mug...I explained that I didn’t want it out of plastic that would end up in landfill for hundreds of year or a mug, which is not a very enjoyable way to drink water, I waste a glass. She said it was their policy and that I couldn’t, I asked to speak to the manager as I though this to be ludicrous. She said she was the duty manager and there was nothing she could do about it. In the mean time one of her colleagues, a man in his late teens/early twenties started interjecting and said I was being ridiculous, he was being really aggressive. I was so shocked and told him that he probably has more time left on this planet than I do to life through the consequences of global warming and he should be more concerned about plastic waste than me! That being said I do have small children so I’m pretty invested in their future. They wouldn’t relent and I was so angry and shocked about their ignorance and rudeness I asked for a refund (against my just food) and left. Honestly, it shows a total lack of care about the environment, their customers enjoyment of the experience their (water in a glass is just normal and tastes better!) and that it’s being run by very lazy people who would rather buy and throw away presumably hundreds of plastic cups a day than wash some glasses. I’m boycotting them....a one woman (and any friend I would otherwise meet their) stand! P.s. also got table last are all stupidly small, all show and no practicality sums the whole place up!
This cafe has so much potential (lovely building and great location) to become a family’s favourite, but unfortunately fails to deliver on so many levels. Not only it’s overpriced (a small bottle of water £1.80, a kids sandwich £4.50) but also serves terrible food. I was so disappointed the first time I ate there after they reopened, the sweet potato falafel sounded great but was awful, albeit being expensive - it was dry, hard and lacked flavour, it was like eating saw dust in a cheap pita bread, and having to pay almost £10 for the pleasure! Worst of all the staff is awful, all very young and untrained. For example, this evening I went to buy an ice cream for my daughter, there were 3 ladies chatting around the till, they hardly noticed I was standing in front of them, for a few minutes I tried to catch their attention and when I finally did and asked for an ice cream, one dryly replied “sorry just lollies now” I said that it wasn’t 5pm yet and she just looked at me and replied with a smile that was rude rather than friendly “two minutes to 5, just lollies now”. They always shut the ice cream parlour long before 5 as it’s probably more convenient for them, and they are so rude about it! Better avoided.
Potential to be so much better via a few small changes and good management. Was in the park for a couple of hours and these were the problems we encountered: - Poor signage, kiosk was open but so was the pavillion, not clear what can be ordered from where. Everyone queueing at the kiosk while staff inside seemingly doing very little. - Ordered the vegi pizza, sat at benches at entrance to pavillion. Order number was never called for colleciton or was called such that no one sitting could hear, no attempt to recall it periodically. Only found out it had been called when I went up and asked - Pizza didn't have all the toppings it said it should on the board, overcooked too - Multiple staff standing around having a chat in the collection area while one staff member was overstretched taking orders, making hot drinks, serving ice cream with a long queue clearly visible. - Witnessed people complaining about the ice cream because the freezer at the kiosk wasn't cold enough causing the ice cream to melt almost instantenously. From what I heard, manager acknowledged it wasn't working properly but continued to serve other customers from it. All in all, won't be back in a rush
Let down yet again by very very poor service. 10am on a Sunday morning, only two or three other tables occupied. Ordered 2 Rye Fry and a child's menu Sausage & Beans on Toast. Friends who orderd separately just before us orderd similar items. Numerous other tables came after us ordered and we're served long before us. After 40 minutes and repeated requests for our food it finally arrived but order was wrong! Friends were still waiting for a bacon sandwich over an hour and 10 mins after ordering andlogin after the rest of us had finished eating. It was obvious we were more than a little disappointed I'm the service but did we get any sort of apology or offer of a discount - nope! Staff working in kitchen all had normal street clothes on, only the person serving at the till and one of the waiters was wearing an apron. Two of the kitchen hands had very long hair which was down and free flowing, and a third had hers in a loose him, but not a hygiene hair net in sight. Overall hygiene standards are very low in the whole establishment. Have given them our business time and again but now it's time to vote with our feet.
I wish I could have given this review zero stars, but the minimum was one, so let's go with that. One star is equivalent to a burnt latte that you must carry back to your own table, but only after spilling the overfilled cup on yourself and other patrons. One star also gets you rude, uncouth staff that make you feel like your intruding upon their space. One star gets you an expensive brunch that includes an inedible sausage and egg sandwich made with (incredibly) stale bread that is almost impossible to cut, break off or chew. The bread was so stale, I had to discard it and steal my partner's toast, only to find his toast was also the same stale bread - only warm. So in summary, I paid £18 for a half sip of coffee, some burnt milk skin, 1/4 of a sausage and a Diet Coke. Didn't even bother complaining to the sullen staff, as I felt I'd receive a loud sigh, hair flip and a "whatever" commonly used by disgruntled teenagers forced to work on a Saturday morning. Never again. Ever. Not even if my life, or that of my loved ones depended on it.
Like a lot of places that enjoy a great location and something of a monopoly, this cafe disappoints in a number of areas. I love the cafe itself and the view across the Rye is really great. I come here a lot to work, they have a couple of plug sockets. They don't usher me out or pressure me to buy loads of coffees which I appreciate. Particularly because coffees are expensive(!) £3.20 for a latte that is ok but no better. Even if they're quiet they won't bring your coffee to your table, which feels petty when the staff are often standing around doing nothing. The staff tend to be polite without being friendly, they definitely don't go out of their way to make you welcome. They have a good number of unisex toilets, but they generally feel unclean, even when you're there early in the day. It's a real location for parents with their young children and also dog-friendly, which can make it a bit loud. Basically an underwhelming cafe in a great location, so still worth a visit.
This cafe may be nice than it’s predecessor, but that is really the only redeeming feature of this place outside of a superbly convenient location. The food is ok, but completely sub par when compared to it’s sister restaurant in Dulwich Park, and at the same price tag. The staff are often rude and dismissive, and appear to pride themselves on their ability to ignore you or make your experience more difficult than it should be. Orders brought out incorrectly on multiple occasions, kids meals coming after adults to name but a couple of the regular issues I experienced before pulling the pin on any returns here. It is a shame, as this place had the potential to be a part of the community it is serving. Instead it is just another faceless chain cafe that will only survive due to its location or until people become fed up with it. The Dulwich version however, remains in my few encounters a fantastic alternative still
Thorougly exploiting its monopoly. The Round occupies a prime chunk of real estate in the centre of Peckham Rye common. Directly adjacent to the new playground where what must be hundreds of kids must play everyday, it is hundreds of metres away from the nearest competion. It has a captive audience. So it's not entirely unexpected that they charge a signficant premium for their fare. However, the daily operation of the place seems perplexingly lazy. They always seem to be out of at least one thing. The front of house staff don't care, but then again they seem to be teenagers so maybe that's to be expected. To be fair to management, the recent refurbishment has established a well appointed facility and the menu is attractive on paper. So I applaud the vision, I just wish it was better done (and of course cheaper).
With 3 smoothies and 3 fish fingers sandwiches costing me nearly £45, this place disgustingly overpriced. I couldn't help but wonder about all of the other local residents which includes OAP's, single parents, teenagers and those on lower incomes that could never afford to even buy a coffee here. It's daylight robbery and excludes a massive portion of the local community. The staff are also extremely rude. I politely asked to fill up my 9 and 10 year old nephews water bottles after paying for overpriced and mediocre food and was told a firm "no" by the manager. I later found out the they are food hygiene rated 2 which is appalling especially as it's basic food hygiene. As a new resident to the area it's a shame because I will never return to this dreadful place.
My sister’s kids were in the mood for some hot chocolate so we decided to stop by. The place seemed to be busy with people still eating at some tables. We were waiting in line for approximately 10 minutes. When we finally got to the cash register and ordered two hot chocolates, we were told that they were closed and that we cannot order anything. Outrageous. They served the person in front of us, but not us. So the second the clock struck 5:30, they stopped serving, regardless of the fact that they had the customers in store who were waiting there for a while. Shame on you!
This place is in an amazing location, and for mums and family/friends walks is the perfect stop off. However the business takes awfully advantage of this. The service is poor, the food portions mean and quality generally average. The pizza is a total rip off and coffee is bitter and overpriced. Most mums I know avoid this place like the plague. Most cafés in the park are community driven and offer good food at good prices, this café has taken the very opposite approach. On the good side, it does offer good clean toilets with disable access.
I took a discerning friend for breakfast today, choosing the Cafe on the Rye as somewhere of high quality. What a disappointment. The quality of the food - both the full English and the veggie version - was awful. Bubble and squeak consisting of what appeared to be very old and watery cabbage with hard bits of potato, chewy and fairly tasteless bacon and white toast which was cheap thin sliced bread with a tiny square of butter barely enough for one slice. I was embarrassed. Really sad - need to up your game guys.
Lovely newly furnished cafe. I can not agree any less than other comments below. The staff are absolutely rude, no interest whatsoever in giving good service. One particular staff (tall girl blonde with no English skills) I must say she was very VERY rude no customer service! . managers are bad and useless can’t give good service more interested in flirting with customers. Too bad the food isn’t that bad but the whole staff atmosphere it’s like being in a children’s play ground. Don’t waste your time coming here.
I had the chorizo sandwich with rocket salad. Very good. Decent coffee as always.

Recently visited.. I’m petrified, shocked and feeling awful for whoever the owner of this cafe is. The staff realy need a lesson in hospitality, customer service!! One of the staff were rude to my little girl. The bad attitude this place has is apauling. the managers two ladies who were there in their own clothes I presume they are the managers, I think they need to be trained. I realy hope the owners see this, don’t let your company down hiring such ignorant staff.
Lovely staff but this place is let down by its extortionate prices. £4.50 for an iced coffee and £5.20 for a vegan hot chocolate really makes you wonder how out of touch with the local area the owners of this cafe are. I'd love to be able to stop here on my daily walks but the overpricing is a real turn off. Much better off going to Old Spike (just outside the park) where the coffee is £1.30 cheaper.

The staff were friendly and extremely kind, I didnt realise they didnt accept cash and had my 2 year old niece with me, the lady said I could still have a baby chino for her!!!! What a gem. My niece then started to cry for the muffin she had already picked out, another kind member of staff gave her a treat from her own pocket and settled my niece who was about to go full on tantrum mode, really nice place and the best staff :) thank you so much x
Seriously what a real bad experience. I ordered soup (squash and sweet potato) it should be fine but I didn't even tasted like veggies, so watery, I could just taste paprika and hot spice. I couldn't eat it. Horrible. So I decided to eat a brownie instead to get rid of the spice taste. While I was eating it I just felt a hair in the brownie. Showed them and they offered me another one, I had a banana cake instead because I was left hungry.
A cafe in the round both physically and metaphorically. Food good, homemade style and cooked with love. Beer and wine available. I had a black coffee and the buttermilk chicken burger. Its a yum, yum, Dog friendly cafe they even sell homemade treats for doggies, .

Mediocre at best. Nearly £20 for 2 coffees a cake and a sausage roll. Coffee is just hot milk, no froth , sausage rolls are just microwaved so they’re nice and sweaty handed over in a paper bag, had to ask for plates, even though you pay to eat in, carrot cake at £5 a slice, very dense, and not big enough for that kind of money. Won’t be going back..

Very mixed experiences in here. You can order similarly priced food from nearby restaurants (and this is not a restaurant) which will make the grade, or you can come here and pay the same money for food that better suits an airline. They'd have been better off going for something much more simple rather than anything for anyone. And it's ok if it's a one-off but it's not - strange and surly service to go with it too.
What's happened to the food and service here? Within the last 3 weeks the portion size has decreased, our order has been forgot and the way the English breakfast is served: with the wrapped butter on top of my toast which is bathing in the beans if there is enough on the plate.... Yuck! Hope you can somehow get back to how it was or improve. This is a weekly spot for us. I wouldn't want to change it.
The location is brilliant and service used to be fine if a bit slow, but recently (writing this June 2021) I'm finding more often that the staff get orders wrong and can be really rude when trying to get service. It's such a shame because the coffee is decent and it would be great to have a nice place to go in the park but this is expensive for such unreliable service.
The coffee was decent, nothing mind blowing. Could have a bit of care of mixing something as simple as an Americano. Very busy with all the children during half term but plenty of space for them to run around. Service was quite fast but overall expensive coffee considering the quality.

So slow and the prices are extortionate. Paid £4 for a tiny mocha, the barista forgot what drink she was making so started sniffing them to work out which was which. All the food is left open uncovered on the counter and they let everyone being their dogs in, so unhygienic! Won't be returning

Nice looking but incredibly overpriced. It seems like they're out to charge as much as possible while emploing young, presumably minimum or low wage staff who dont care/don't want to engage. Normally I wouldn't write a review but looking at some of the others It would appear The Round is engaged in black hat (fake) marketing to get their rating up.
Lovely spot on the Rye. Cafe is nice to hang out in, especially in the mornings before it gets too busy. Food is expensive but ok. Coffee is pretty terrible - whatever you ask for, you’ll get a latte with often burnt milk. Staff are sometimes fine, sometimes pretty blunt. I’m there quite a lot still due to location, so more fool me I suppose!
Order for kids burger and you get adult cheeseburger whole order wrong from start to end. If you walk in here and have allergy be mindful place is not safe at all, they put on the plate what they think its right not what is on the menu....too many kids running the show if you ask me..

Very disappointed with quality of food, portion sizes and pricing. Scrambled eggs on 2 toast with 1 sausage came to £7.40... ridiculous even by London gentrification prices. Such a shame this new company Colicci have taken over since Nov 2016. I used to use this cafe 3 or 4 times per week, now it's more like once a month. Such a shame.
I visited this restaurant on Saturday morning and it was busy, which is always a good sign . I ordered a cappuccino And vegetarian breakfast which was tasty and satisfying. The service was quick and thought the staff were friendly and polite .would consider eating thire again and recommend to friends and family .
I love the coffee in this cafe. I drink mine black and it's impossible to hide a badly made Americans. I've probably been here 10 times since the change in ownership and I have been constantly impressed. The staff are also very nice despite the cafe often being very busy. Thank you for providing a great service.
Very expensive and the food’s not very nice. The drinks aren’t great either, coffee shop prices but tiny and taste kind of weak. I don’t think it’s even worth popping in for a hot drink when the weather is bad, which is all you need from a park cafe really. Probably good for my wallet but I miss the old set up.
Great coffee. Friendly staff. You can take your dog inside. Lots of outside seating. Good selection of cakes and sandwiches for a quick snack. Large range of hot food. We often stop at this cafe and like the convenience.

It says it closes as 4:30pm and I was told the manager told staff to close at 4pm so wouldn’t let me order and sit inside despite other people still being sat there. I wouldn’t have wasted my time in between jobs to go there otherwise. Even half an hour would have been better than nothing.
The place looks so much better after the refurbishment. I think that the new management is really doing a good job!! The menu is very good ( a bit overpriced for a coffee shop ) but the food is delicious! Hope they will still rearrange the outside area since that’s the best part!
Had a lovely time at the park and cafe, coffee was made with love and fab coffee art, very talented staff, management very attentive and friendly, kids enjoyed themselves, great atmosphere, will definitely be going back

The cafe is lovely....the food is good....but it is VERY over priced!! Not everyone in the community can afford these prices. I am extremely disappointed that a cafe on our gorgeous Peckham Rye can charge these prices and therefore exclude a significant part of our community.
Just bought some mac and cheese with added buttermilk chicken it's was horrendous drenched in whatever sauce it was looked more like cheese soup I don't know how you can spoil pasta especially mac and cheese but £11 in the bin just like that what a rip off totally disgusting
No problem at all apart from it’s quite rightly a popular place and can get busy. Great coffee, tasty cakes and friendly staff. I haven’t tried the menu proper but from what I can see from other customers the food looks tasty and plentiful. Dog friendly too, which suits me.
Overpriced and rude staff. Ordered an Oreo milkshake (£5.40), it came in a small cup and was made feel like the guy serving me was doing me a massive favour. Have eaten there before, which wasn't bad, but definitely over priced. Better everything in Cafe G across the way.
I asked to use my own cup for coffee - I was met with an odd look of “we don’t do this here because... coronavirus”. Sure, all the other coffee shops in East Dulwich that I visited handle client cups just fine. Wasted a paper cup just to pour into my own. Won’t go again.
Kitchen closes at 3.30 so no chance of giving kids a meal after school. Massively overpriced. Staff can be hit or miss, depending on what mood they are in. Toilets are pretty rank all of the time. Only bonus is the convenience IF it’s not busy or actually not closing
What has happenend in here? I came here regularly for the best coffee ever and lovely staff and Fiona. Now the place is filthy! The coffee is terrible and i will not be coming back here again unless they change the coffee back and get back lovely Fiona !!!!
Lovely cafe. So much nicer than the one that used to be here. Staff are friendlier, and although it's the same building it seems so much more spacious, they've not tried to cram in as many tables (ie punters) as possible like the previous establishment.
Great Service, Great Food, Great People, a full restaurant with alcohol & food is available here. You can get many buses inc the 12 or 484, the 78 or P12 & the nearest Railway Station is Peckham Rye, turn right as you leave cover of the station & walk.
The food is quite good but the portions are laughable and the prices extortionate... a £10 halloumi wrap was pitifully small and had a small tablespoon of coleslaw as a side.

Totally refurbished (August 2018), and so much nicer than it was. A bright airy dining area, and a fantastic selection of food options - everything from healthy smoothies & cooked breakfasts to pizzas, burgers and salads for lunch. Highly recommended.
This place is going backwards. Not sure what was worse this new incarnation or the old...? Cold breakfasts, terrible service, limited menu, running out of ingredients regularly. Improvements on cakes and sandwiches. Attrocious pizza. Ryan.
Really like this place .very handy to have this type of cafe by the local playground. It's been refurbished and looking very cozy. The food/drink range is wide.what I dislike it's a little pricey. Always happy to come back tho …
Nice cafe, great service. Had a chicken Thai soup and a brownie and it was super tasty. Nice environment really recommend to come in especially if you have kids.Laura was really friendly and always checking if we needed anything.
Poor customer service. Tap water asked for by a child. Directed to outdoor hose attachment. Toilets filthy and no paper. Mentioned this to a member of staff. He just walked off. A middle class hub of disgrace in my opinion

Lovely cafe in the middle of peckham rye. They're operating a limited menu from the ice creams window with social distancing. Employees are all wearing masks too.
Good place to bring the kids for a late breakfast. ***TIP*** the £3 kids scrambled eggs and beans on toast is the same size as the adult portion. Coffee is good.
Absolutely fine but everything somehow tastes not as nice as the Dulwich park cafe, even though it's run by the same company and has the same menu ♀️ …

I had the full English, pain au chocolat and a macchiato, I like my food and this was excellent. Lovely people and a friendly atmosphere, don’t miss out!
Nice fair sized leisurely park. Lots of families and young kids. Well used over Covid. Liked the park Cafe. Sausage and egg baps, yum and great coffee.
Cost of living and all that, but £6.50 for a cup of tea and a small slice of carrot cake is taking the mick. That said, carrot cake was still tasty.
Well located for coffee and a (vegan) sausage roll. Always so busy though so they might want to think about having more people to help on a weekend.
The worst service in the hood. Super expensive prices, baristas that serve in slow motion, and whenever the baby needs a toilet it's always closed.
Very disappointed, very overpriced. Staff behaving as if they don't want to be there at all, and rude. It is a real shame, such a lovely area.
Over priced. Slow service. Hope there is never a fire, back door on the outside has locks on it, so if any body needed to get out they can't !
Sunday, 17hrs, the park is packed and the coffee shop is closed. Honestly, this people really don’t know how to run a business to make money.
From a few visits... Saturday staff close early. Over priced for substandard quality. Definitely bring your own refreshments to the park :-D
It says it’s open until 6:30 on the door. Walked over with my two year old to get a snack and was told it’s closed at 6.

The place to catch some food if you're in Peckham Rye Park. Touch on the pricey side for some items but not enough to prevent you going.
Nice staff and convenient but my lord, the defacto worst coffee in the city, I kid you not, even pret coffee tastes good in comparison
Such a shame that the newly refurbished cafe is letdown by the staff. Lots of negative comments overhead on several visits to the rye.
Terrible service, overpriced. I don’t think I’ve ever had a good experience here. Staff need a lesson in hospitality and efficiency
Good coffee but somewhat grubby. Tables not cleared and floor filthy despite plenty of staff on and it not being excessively busy.
Miserable staff, toilets disgusting and tables inside always dirty. How can be possible to have a business running in that way?
One of the worst service staff rude and uninterested and so slow never going back even though I walk my dog everyday on the rye
