I have been getting my haircut from Uyen Tran since 2010 and it always turns out perfect every time. She started out at Gloss The Salon and opened her very own hair salon in last summer in Little Italy. Theory Hair Studio is in a cool building off of Beech and across from Craft and Commerce. It's a small but very calming with a light mint wall, modern decor and high ceiling with all glass windows in the front. Uyen is the best hair stylist I have ever had. I have a lot of cowlicks and she managed to customize a fashionable but yet work appropriate haircut for me. My favorite part of the process is the shampoo, it's my time express man-spa. When the haircut is complete, I get my hair rinsed out and she wrapped my face with a hot-minty-smelling towel. It sounds a little strange but is the most relaxing experience. She offers Haircut, Hair color, even for men, I've seen her do an awesome gray blending and shaved off about 7 years off this guy, Hair Extensions and Eyelash Extensions. I did not even know there was such thing as Eyelash Extensions until I came in early for my appointment one time and saw it in action. Probably the most intricate work I have seen. To sums up this long review, Uyen is passionate about her career and it shows through her amazing work. Give Theory a call.

I have been going to Uyen for my hair for about a year and a half and have been getting eyelash extensions from her for the past 6 months. I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about this salon! Uyen is a perfectionist who always takes the time to ensure that my hair/lashes are perfect at every appointment. When I first came to Theory I had just gotten highlights done at another salon where they had rushed through my highlights and they had turned out as streaky and chunky-- not at all the natural look I was going for! Uyen took the time to fix the mistakes they had made with my hair to give me very natural looking highlights and a great haircut. Uyen also does a wonderful job with eyelash extensions! I have never been anywhere else because they turn out perfectly everytime. I am always getting complimented on my eyes thanks to Uyen! Along with being amazing at what she does, Uyen is also super friendly and fun! Finally, Theory is in a great location and the salon is always kept flawlessly clean. Go to Theory, you won't be disappointed!

FINALLY I've found a stylist who does it all!!! I started going to Uyen for a cut, which lead to her awesome ombré skills and now glam eyelash extensions! I HIGHLY recommended her for a beautiful ombré. I was in search of an ombré colorist and she did an excellent job at blending all the colors in so naturally. Every time I leave her chair, I feel better than when I arrived. Besides being extremely skilled, Uyen is very personable and will make you feel completely welcome and cozy in her salon. She tends to book up quickly, so I make sure to set my follow up appointments in advance. I like her online booking system which sends me reminders ahead of time. It makes it easy for the clients as well as the stylist to keep track of appointments. Bottom Line: Theory Hair Studio is a must if you're looking for the total salon experience!!! P.S. We recently moved to San Diego and finding the right stylist can be challenging, scary, and frustrating. I did my online research and took a chance on Hair Theory Studio. Uyen is an amazing stylist. She is extremely knowledgeable in her profession. I went from a dark red head to blonde within two sessions while maintaining hair health. She discussed each step of the process and together we devised a plan. She was realistic about the goals and how to do it as safely as possible. (Going from extreme dark red to blonde can be very damaging to hair if not done properly) I immediately trusted her and I couldn't be happier. It is rare you find a stylist that is so skillful, knowledgeable, and professional. This has been my best hair experience to date and I will continue to go to her while stationed here in San Diego. I cannot say enough good things aboht my experience and how pleased I am with the outcome.

I was looking forward to an Asian stylist but what a huge disappointment. I could not find anywhere to hang my coat and I totally forgot when I left it beside me. She was very rushed with serving 3 clients at the same time window. I wanted Carmel color and it turned out to be ash. Color was not discussed and shown to me. She spilled a lot of the dye mixture and one plopped on my navy jacket. My Hobbs London bought jacket was destroyed. I thought never mind did not want to pile up to her life problems that I heard while I was there, this is just a jacket. Cut wasn’t too bad but oh boy my my hair is so ash light. I understand she is trying to blend with some of my grey. But now I look like I have head of grey hair. On top of that my hair is totally fried. Split ends and frizzy. Paid $391 + $50 deposit for cut and bleached hair. So sad now trying to get treatment to revive my hair.

I'm so happy I found Uyen and Theory Hair Studio! I've moved around a lot in the past few years, so I've probably been to at least twenty different stylists. Uyen is the first to be able to get my color exactly how I like it. For some reason, my hair seems to confound most stylists; they're never able to prevent it from turning brassy. Uyen has the magic touch! I also get extensions from Uyen, and I couldn't love them more. She uses extremely high quality materials, but it's her application of the extensions that truly impresses me. I know a lot of people with extensions end up with damaged hair, tangles, or bald spots...I haven't experienced any problems like that at all! If you're considering getting extensions, you DEFINITELY have to visit Uyen for a consultation. Thank you Uyen!!

I am in total shock. I had a very unexpected death in my family yesterday and I had to cancel my appointment. I received the reminder text and cancelled through the system. I completely forgot about this appointment while I'm matching arrangements, and grieving when someone called me from the studio. I was then told that I would bee charge half ($96) of the appointment even though I had attempted to cancel. When I asked her to please work with me through this very dark time, she hung up on me- charged me- and refused to pick up the phone. I'm already heartbroken and now in total shock that someone would treat another person grieving a loss this way. I wouldn't recommend going here to anyone- based on her unprofessional manner and money motivated behavior. Just wow.

I've seen numerous friends of mine have bad hair salon experiences. Therefore, I became cautioned with who touches my hair. Luckily, I was recommended to Uyen by two of my friends and have had an amazing hair transformation! I had dark brunette virgin hair and thanks to Uyen I have natural looking blonde hair. My hair is still soft and shiny and looks healthy. She gives great tips on how to care for your hair and shows great passion for what she does. Finding a hairstylist who takes her time with each client instead of trying to hurry the process to get another client in the chair is hard to come across. I admire how Uyen treats my hair as if it's a masterpiece. I highly recommend her to anyone and everyone!! (:

So flaky and unorganized. I requested an appointment on Saturday and by Sunday I received a confirmation text for my appointment. The morning of my appointment the owner emailed me asking to reschedule for the following week. She went on to say that my appointment was never confirmed. I sent her screenshots of the confirmation text. I had scheduled my entire day around this appointment and tried calling 5 times over several hours and emailing her back without hearing whether or not my appointment was still on for the day. I would never recommend this salon to anyone who wants a reliable stylish. This was the owner BTW! How unprofessional.

I have been saved by Uyen twice now! The first time around my hair was very over processed and she gave me the most perfect blonde and got my hair healthy again. The second time I had extensions done at the salon at the fashion valley mall and after a few weeks they were already slipping! They were extremely poorly done and Uyen had to completely remove them and do the job again. Now my extensions are seamless, well blended, and look amazing. Uyen has an impeccable technique and always does what’s best for my hair. Absolutely love my hair every time I come here. 10/10 recommend Theory Hair

I’ve been going to Theory for two years and am so happy I found a hair extension and color expert in San Diego! I’ve been getting extensions for over 10 years and love the technique at this salon. Uyen can transform your hair so it’s longer, thicker, but still has body and movement which makes it look super natural. She’s also great at color matching my hair to the extensions whether I’m going darker or lighter/warmer/ashy etc. Recently we used Habit Hand Tied extensions to try them out and I love how they came out. Highly recommend this place for cuts, color, and hair extensions.

Owner, Uyen Tran is simply one of the best stylists I've ever seen. She's meticulous and methodical when it comes to my color, aiming for a flawless immediate result as well as anticipating and preparing for the growth process. When it's time to get touched up, my hair looks gently grown out, rather than two-toned and in desperate need of attention. Each stage is beautiful because she PLANS it that way. THE place to go to for cut, color, hair and lash extensions. I’m so happy I found Uyen when I first moved to San Diego. She fixed my hair color and brought my hair back to life! I honestly don’t trust anyone else with my hair. I don’t live in California anymore but I make sure to book flights out to see her. She will really take the time to work with you to get the look you want. She is so great at what she does and has a real artist eye for hair. Like I said she’s the only one I go to, and you’ll feel the same way.

I moved to San Diego and needed a new look so I decided for extensions. I found Theory Hair Studio through Yelp and got connected with Uyen and Mary and have been getting my extensions installed and adjusted here. My hair is wavy and has multiple colors and faded dye and Uyen was able to match my hair color and texture exactly so that the blend of my hair is seamless. I get compliments on my hair all the time! Everyone is so nice and coming here to get my hair done is so much fun! You feel welcomed and included.

Very disappointed with the condition of my hair. After Laisa did full head highlights, I got home, I took a better look at natural light and my hair was in 2 shades: gray and yellow around roots and dirty dark on the length. It was just terrible looking. 2nd day I called and I went back and they used a bleach to wash the terrible color that cost me $500. I got home and after my first wash my hair is fully yellow. On top of that their attitude was awful. Never again there!

Uyen and her assistant, Laisa, are amazing at what they do. Whenever I show Uyen a photo of what I would like my hair to look like she does exactly that. She does the best highlights and hair cut I've ever had. I always schedule something last minute and she does her best to squeeze me in. We always have a great time chatting and catching up as well. I would recommend Uyen and Laisa a thousand times over. They truly do great work.

After almost a year of coming to Uyen I can honestly say that I don't think I'll ever be able to go to anyone else. Not only did she save my hair (seriously, saved it), she is so much fun to talk to. If you're going to be spending 3+ hours with someone during an appointment, you want to enjoy being around them! Uyen is the best!

I can not have better words for Theory hair studio!! Emily saved my hair and self esteem with her color correction. My hair was grey and fried and seemingly hopeless and she not only gave me a great color (and continues to!) but she squeezed me in that day to prevent me having a meltdown. Her and Uyen are the best!

Was in San Diego for the weekend and used their online booking website to book an appointment 3 days in advance. I received a “CONFIRMATION” email for the appointment and then received a call less than 24hrs before the appointment

I waited for a over a month for this appointment. Three hour appointment, I just got back from off roading in the desert so I said my hair is dirty. She wouldn't wash my hair and canceled the whole appointment. Was extremely rude.
