My friends and I came across this restaurant after hearing about the current hour long wait at Little Sheep and decided to give it a try. The restaurant's kind of small (maybe 5 tables?) but we were instantly seated - there were only maybe 2 other parties who were also there. It's definitely not the classiest/prettiest place out there as the interior was pretty dark and it has more of a fast food place kind of vibe. We all ordered some form of the katsu curry - I got the chicken katsu curry and it was actually really good. There was potato in the curry and the katsu was nicely fried. Portions were very generous and the main thing that pleasantly surprised me was the price. Each dish was only $10! As much as I do believe that the food itself is very good especially for such a cheap price, especially in SF, I'm taking off 2 stars because of the customer service. They told our group to "please calm down" and while we were definitely the loudest group there considering that nobody else was really talking in the restaurant, we were talking at a pretty reasonable level and we've never dealt with that in any other restaurant. They also placed the check on our table and came by again to ask if we could pay when we were only halfway through the meal (we didn't come anytime near to closing). Despite the bad customer service, I think I'd still come by to get takeout or if I was trying to grab a quick meal but definitely don't come here if you're coming in a larger group and want to talk to them.
Now I have a review already up on Yelp and I will update that review after this. But I normally come back to San Francisco year the 15 months or so. I want to eat here because the vert first time was back in 2015 and they had sushi then and it was so darn good. In the year 2017, I came back and eat there for 10 days straight for lunch. Now it's 2020 and I had to pay my respects and help out as much as I can. This COVID has affected us all and I love supporting the Japanese communities and the food they do serve to the public. Such good food at Ton Ton. Can I honestly say this, most America eats sushi wrong from the very start and never learn, so, therefore, the sushi bar that was once there doesn't affect the quality of food Japanese dishes they have. Oh, my panda. so good that it will make you smile and continue to eat. "NOTE: There is always one waiter so please discuss the lack of staff since we are in a Pandemic. The sake is always good and Sapporo DRAFT is my recommended choice and not a bottle. " My optional as I live and work in Japan myself" I'd care about the Japanese communities in San Francisco and I wish I had the power to make their lives a little better. But, one person can make a difference with just one open heart. I will love to come back next year and visit and eat here again. It's an honor to eat and to be severed by some amazing staff and owner of Ton-Ton aka Katanaya. Hands down the best hot Japanese curry dishes in the downtown area.
We visit San Francisco often for my ucsf visits. I was feeling bad today after a procedure yesterday, so my partner reminded me he needed food. I felt like soup would be ok, so we both remembered this little ramen place by our hotel. I had the Tan Tan men Ramen (spicy ground pork), and he had the seafood Ramen. We also had the pork gyoza which was very good. He didn’t like the broth in his, but loved the broth in mine.the medium is huge, definitely big enough to share. If you love ramen, I highly recommend this place. They also have curry, bento boxes and sushi on their menu.

Wheelchair accessibility
I noted that the tables were moveable and they had a marked handicap spot.
Grateful to get an early seating at 5pm on Thanksgiving evening - as Tonton was one of very few places open. Small, cosy and homely Japanese restaurant. Service was friendly and very attentive. Chicken Katsu Curry portion was enormous and very tasty. As others have commented it is pretty unexpectedly spicy for a Japanese curry - so be warned. Reasonable prices. Only suggestions are to put a PULL sign on the outside of your door to stop people (like me) thinking you are closed after many failed attempts at pushing it to go in! Also if there is a way to have the door automatically close and everytime people came in to order takeaway they woukd leave the door open and it would get very cold - save the waitresses having to run and close it all the time.

Ah, Ton Ton Ramen, listen well, for Soup Daddy is sending a dispatch from the Bay Area, and the headline reads: "Utterly Satisfied!" Your broth strikes a chord as poignant as a front-page exclusive, deep in flavor and rich in nuance. Portions generous enough to match the grandeur of a Hearst estate. The staff? As welcoming as a society gala, ensuring Soup Daddy's foray into ramen grandiosity is a lead story. A momentary aside to salute the courageous elder Asian gentleman who took an unfortunate tumble atop Coit Tower—you, sir, are a testament to the indomitable spirit of San Francisco. Ton Ton Ramen, five stars! A dining establishment deserving of banner headlines and Soup Daddy's unyielding approval!

Came here for a casual dinner after getting a couples massage at siam thai orchid around the corner. It's a cute little hole in the wall spot with 7 tables. Affordable prices for great food. We tried the yuzu sour and peach sour chu-his for our drinks. I got a salmon inari to start and the spicy chasu ramen as my main. We also got the pork katsu curry. Everything was delicious. Planning to come back if we're ever in the union square area again. Edit: I went 2 more times coz I really like their ramen and their chu-his. Noticed they don't serve inaris anymore, though.

Loved it here. The octopus balls are amazing, the gyoza is juicy and delicious, the pork shoulder was just the right amount of crispy and moist, the calamari was perfectly cooked. We got a bunch of appetizers and the peach saki cocktails. Those Peach cocktails are amazing and I can see why people have said it’s their favorites there. Absolutely highly recommend going and trying multiple dishes. The aroma of the curry was intoxicating and I cannot wait to go back and try the pork katsu curry. Your tummy will grumble with excitement and hunger as soon as you walk in and smell the amazing food.

I really wanted to love this place because the price is certainly right and the menu comprehensive... but the curse of the bigger menu applies and we found our meals to be way too oily (in the the case of the tantan ramen) and under-seasoned in the case of the curry rice set. That being said, if you were looking for a quick cheap eat, the basic side of curry rice will certainly fill you up and the price is very reasonable- especially for the area. It's tough being in this neighborhood because there's a number of ramen rivals. For alternatives, check out Mensho Tokyo if you're willing to pay and to wait, but heads up it will be 2x the price. For those new to quick-serve Japanese food (or if you were a traveling family just needing a budget meal) TonTon may be just what you're looking for.
Walked in and went to the back, waited around 5 min, was greeted. A party left so I sat, waited and waited. Lady is on the phone in the back and sees me. Rest of the restaurant is waiting for their checks. I get up and walk in the back and ask if they are still open, lady says yes so I ask for a beer. I go sit down and wait... I wait and another man walks in and goes to the back. Lady asks if he wants to eat in or to go and he says eat in, she tells him to sit and gets him a water, tells him to wait. Now the other patrons are all asking for their checks. I'm kinda insulted she didn't bring me water. She walks past me, not acknowledging me several times. I've been sitting there now for almost 15 min. I got up and walked away. What kind of place is this?
we arrived last night and the there was a small restaurant that had a sign when he walked through the door wait until being seated after waiting for quite a few minutes, I walked up to the front and asked if we could see their selves and she said yes . we waited at least another 10 to 15 minutes and nobody came with water couldn’t even been longer and we went up to the front again and had to ask for a menu and then we had to go up to also order. The food was good upon receiving at much long after the weight but the customer service was absolutely horrible. no water refills. The only thing they gave us at the table was our bill everything else we had to go and get ourselves.

The waitress there was very disrespectful towards me and my friend. She was complaining about not getting a tip from both of us. We just paid our Rent!! I tip usually but damn I didn’t know I was gonna get disrespected after I just spent 30$ and my friend spend 25. She told me to eat at Burger next time if I don’t want to tip and that was very rude she did it Infront of everyone that was there. She told me I kept asking her back and forth to get things all I asked for want another chop stick and some napkins I don’t see how that’s a lot to ask for. It was my first time eating here and she ruined it for me

This is a hidden gem, probably because it doesn't come up if you search for "ramen". I was actually about to go to one of the Japanese restaurants on either side of this place but chose this place instead! I don't recall the last time I went to a Japanese restaurant that isn't super high end where everyone who worked there is actually Japanese outside of Japan. I had the tempura udon which came with a very decent portion of tempura on the side (how it's supposed to be served) and it all came to under $11. While I was there another customer commented on how decent the prices were which is rare for SF and the waitress explained that the owner believed that SF prices were too high and wanted to keep his prices low. Great service too.
This place knocks it out of the park! The best Japanese food I have had recently. My favorite dishes are the pork katsu curry and the Tonton Ramen. Excellent service and a great meal.

Had a great experience here. Was waiting in line at "Mensho" (as always) and we had passed this spot on the way up and had never noticed it before. My partner and I decided the wait was too long and headed over here and grabbed some ramen! I had the Spicy Chasu and she had the Spicy Kara-age, both were very well portioned and the tonkatsu was rich and porky, and the chicken broth was really light while still maintaining a breadth of flavor. Our waitress was very sweet and very attentive. Would very much recommend!

Kind and attentive service. Delicious food. Fried chicken was in delicious mixed light dark large chunks and cooked to perfection. Crispy crust, not greasy, and no undercooked center. All juicy. Soups smelled great and taste to match. Even low brow options like gyoza (generally ignored, but when done well is an oniony dumpling with a ponzu that actually has yuzu and, in the best cases, has some kind of seasoned sesame oil) was delicious. Excellently seared in an appropriately hot pan, then steamed, and even though the chicken was great all alone, still dipped up the last bit of that juice.
I was looking for a quick place to eat after Dreamforce and found this gem of a hole in the wall ramen restaurant. It was pretty empty when I got there so I was seated immediately and the service was great. I ended up ordering the house ramen with chicken broth and asked for a little bit of spiciness. The broth was delicious and the perfect spiciness level and the noodles were very tender and well cooked. Would highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a quick and filling bite of ramen

Service here was really bad. Server was completely rude to us when asking simple questions about what was in the broth. We asked for just one modification which wasn’t accommodated and then they got upset when we asked simply which ramen it was since it wasn’t what we ordered. Then they started to yell at us because they didn’t explain to us properly. The ramen itself was super watery and didn’t have any flavor at all. The noodles tasted like what you would get from a noodle pack from Walmart. This was by far the worst ramen I’ve ever had in the Bay Area.
Went back again in May 2023. Small restaurant. Good location in Union Square. The Chasu ramen was delicious and the waitress was friendly. However there was some unpleasant smell that impacted the experience. I could not tell whether it’s from their restroom or from the street. May 2022 The tonkotsu house ramen was delicious. The noodle was cooked just right. The soft boiled egg was tasty.

Great little local restaurant just around the corner from our Union Square Hotel. Great service and a great variety of dishes on the menu. I had the pork cutlet curry and rice which was really nice, well served and steaming hot. Crispy well cooked crumbed cutlet, cut into slices, a big portion of sticky rice and a perfect curry sauce that made all the ends meet.

We brought our kids, ages 6 and 7 who love Ramen, Curry, and Karaage. This restaurant has good choices for all of these. The service was fast and the quality of food was good. The spicy ramen and the Miso ramen were both very good. The standard by which we judge Ramen in the US is Orenchi in Santa Clara, CA. I think Tonton is a good choice for a quick bowl of ramen, it’s not quite as rich or complex as Orenchi, but worth a visit. It was family friendly.
Authentic japanese comfort food. Bento box, curry rice, ramen, everyday food. My pork katsu curry was simply perfect. So crispy, thick and juicy katsu and very tasty curry. It was delicious. It was really good. Good food like this has this magic ability to transport you to a memorable moment registered in your memory. Food for your soul.

A gem of a place. Excellent value for money bento boxes ($7.50), which are really authentic and delicious. Absolutely recommend the udon as well. A pint of draft Sapporo is only $3... What more could you want??? This is the kind of place I hope they stay a little under the radar so it never gets crazy popular and develop impossible queues... Yet it would totally deserve that kind of recognition. I'm so torn.
Maybe it was an off day? Reviewers here have touted their chashu ramen. On two different occasions mine was miles from stellar. The first time the chashu was mostly strips of fat. This last time it was mostly uncooked and gave me "the runs" an hour later. The broth isn't bad, but I've had far, far better at Halu (now unfortunately defunct). I definitely won't be recommending this place to my friends.
I've been here twice and gotten the pork katsu curry to-go both times. The first time everything was good and I was glad to have found a new place in this area to get reasonably priced good food. The second time, however, the pork was extremely dry and hard to chew through. It was almost inedible. The inconsistency here makes it hard to come back again or recommend this restaurant to anyone else.
This was great! Went there with my family and our server was so lovely. Everything we had was delicious and reasonably priced. It’s a small little dining room but very cozy. Highly recommend. Also worth nothing I have a peanut allergy and they were very accommodating!

New Japanese Owner restaurant is Open!! I just stopped at the new restaurant today. Owner, servers are Japanese, Im Japanese too:) I didn’t have much time today, so I ordered Tonkatsu teisyoku for to go. They have a bento box, udon, ramen, donburi, 、Japanese curry and more. Very authentic! I was so surprised! Because price, everything under $10! You can’t find like this restaurant in Bay Area.
The quality of the food was very good. Unfortunately, the waitress wasn’t too happy. Additionally, the timing of the food wasn’t good as well. The first ones were already done with their meal while others didn’t get their meals yet. All in all, still recommend this place. Especially with smaller groups.

The restaurant the is the worst ever. My friend and me ate different dishes and both got diarrhea multiple times. In addition, my friend threw up the whole night and could not work the next day. I was sick the following day too. Be aware! I suspect their kitchen does not meet basic hygiene safety and food got poisoned by bugs or bacteria in the kitchen.
We got scold by a Vietnamese lady said that we paid them too less tips which was around 10%. Make sure you pay them 15% or more or you will get scold. She told us not to come back again because we are cheap.

Delicious Katsu Curry and Ramen! Very fair prices for San Francisco. Service is a little awkward, but it's a new place, it's to be expected. Just be patient and enjoy! Or get it to go, it's just as delicious! Even the ramen!
Had the Curry with chicken and it tasted exactly like in Japan. Must be some standard spice? Which was good since that is what I wanted. It was full when I got there so I got to sit at the counter of their other restaurant.
The flavor was good. But it was very salty. I thought maybe it was the curry, but when I ate just the chicken tonkatsu and rice, it was salty as well. I would give them another try, though. Service and attention was good.
Went on Sunday for lunch and there was only 1 lady attending to all the customers but she was really attentive despite the crowd. Food was surprisingly good for the low price, such a steal. Definitely my new go-to place!
Chicken karaage was very salty...and the usual sauce was missing. Definitely not as good as it used to be. When you cut corners you end up losing loyal customers.

Best place for a late night hearty meal! Their portions are a lot for what you pay for and best Katsu curry I’ve ever had ! They are also very accommodating and let people come in and order very close to midnight.
This is our go-to spot for a delicious lunch or dinner. Service is always excellent and food is exceptional. It is very hard to find affordable yet tasty food in SF. I recommend this for locals and tourists alike.

Had a very delicious meal of pork Katsu with curry. And chicken kara-age. 5 stars for curry and Katsu, but the Kara-Age wasn't as good. Overall very good experience will come again. (Edited spelling)
If you put all your emphasis in how savory and well made the broth of the ramen is in a noodle shop, this is it. By far the best I've ever had. This place looks like a dive, but the soup is divine!
Very tasteful ramen which comes close to the Japanese original.

Stopped in pretty late after getting into the city. Ramen and a Bento Box both hit the spot. Good service too. Great hole-in-the-wall spot!

The best ramen I've ever had in the states... or in the world. Ive been to ramen shops in Japan like Ichiran and Ippudo and those are NOT as good as what I was served at Tonton. Insane...
Best experience ever!!!

The food was so good and we received great service from J.J.! The karaage curry was delicious as was the spam masubi and the spicy kimchi ramen. Great prices too. I highly recommend it!
I enjoyed my food. Apparently this restaurant has a new name, we couldn't find it with its previous name. Small and cramped inside, we had to wait 20 minutes outside on the pavement.
Nothing beat a hot ramen in cold raining day

House Ramen and Pork Katsu Bento
Small restaurant. Good ambient. Friendly staff. Food is a bit plain for me but still good. Ordered a house ramen with good portion of meat. Cheap for the portion. Gyoza are huge.
Very generous portion with meat. But it’s way too salty for us…

Server was extremely unwelcoming and rude. Rushed service, had to call them 10 times to get anything. Noticed differential treatment with other customers.

Food was good, service was super weird making us feel bad about giving her too little tip (3 dollars) insisting we give more (6 dollars). Will never return here again.
The greatest Tonkotsu I had ever have in US, Even better than most of the restaurants that sell Japanese food in Taiwan. It’s cheap and delicious, Highly recommend!!
Had the most amazing ramen. The waitress is very attentive and the prices are very affordable considering the location. Would highly recommend this place to anyone.
